Remember the classic nightmare in which you show up unprepared for a test in a class that you completely forgot you had?
That’s what Barack Obama looked like last night. From the opening question, he came off as unprepared, unsteady and almost uninterested in the task at hand. He found himself on defense throughout the debate, and when opportunities arose, he failed to recognize them.
As I noted last night during the live blog, Obama seemed overconfident coming in, as if he had underestimated both his opponent and the occasion. By the end of the evening, overconfidence should no longer have been a problem. As CNN noted, 67 percent of those polled who had watched the debate declared Mitt Romney the victor.
“No presidential candidate has topped 60 percent in that question since it was first asked in 1984,” CNN polling director Keating Holland pointed out.
And a good part of that was caused by Mitt Romney. He came in hungry, needing a win, and it showed in his focus and preparation. He got the better of almost every exchange, in part because at some point in his debate prep he decided to finally make the transition from “severely conservative” GOP primary candidate to general-election candidate.
The new Romney endorsed regulation of business. He dismissed tax cuts as an economic policy. He embraced his own Massachusetts health-care plan. He talked of compromise and working together. A surprised Obama wasn’t ready to handle this latest Romney incarnation and repeatedly failed to tie the moderate, genial GOP candidate on that stage in Denver to the GOP candidate on the campaign trail.
Will the outcome of this debate, the first of three between Obama and Romney, create a ripple in the polls? It almost certainly will. I doubt it will cost Obama his lead, but it should shrink it and introduce doubt in many minds that had not previously doubted. Romney had the night that he needed to keep his funders happy and his base engaged.
The next debate, covering foreign and domestic policy in a townhall forum, will be Oct. 16 at Hofstra University in New York. I suspect that they’ll be scrambling at the White House this morning to clear more time from the president’s calendar for prep work between now and then. He can’t afford a repeat of what happened last night in Denver.

Sorry to be late responding to your first post…two things…Erdogan hasn’t had the best of relations with the Syrian Kurds, but much the opposite. He just let Assad deal with them. Now the PKK has a foreign base to operate and the crackdowns inside Turkey are not being widely reported. Sometimes Our Beloved Messiah has trouble sharing the stage with mere mortals. Did Romney ever win a Nobel Prize? Did Romney ever cause the seas to lower? Did Romney ever give someone a cell phone? Did Romney ever kill Osama bin Laden? Did Romney ever made Chris Matthews leg tingle? No. Only one candidate glows in the dark. A few rational explanations have been offered for last night. The best was from the Father of the Internet, the Prophet of Global Warming, and the Receiver of the $ 500 Massage, Al Gore, Jr. Big Al said the problem with the altitude in Denver. (Romney brought his own oxygen.) Noted film director Michael Moore said the problem was Our Beloved Messiah’s debate coach, Senator John F. Kerry. In the practice debate Kerry kept pointing out that he was in Vietnam and Our Beloved Messiah though it was one of the 57 states. Never fear. Jay Bookman has taken personal charge of preparation for the next debate. The questions will be limited to golf, basketball, and George Bush.

I’m willing to take the argument seriously, but not if Romney’s going to cite a wrong number and not if conservative faithful aren’t going to expend any effort to figure out what the actual number IS. Do a little digging and see if you can come up with a more accurate and specific number (not “its a helluva lot more than the 4 billion”) and maybe we can have a polite conversation about it.
“And in the first paragraph of your first link it looks like it adds up to 90 billion.”
Guess you didn’t read the second paragraph in the second link.
Of that $90 billion (see chart), only $21 billion was actually set aside solely for “green”, renewable energy. Most of the other applications don’t really count as “green energy” – batteries can be charged by coal power, the grid can transport nuclear electrons, high speed trains can run off oil (diesel), etcetera.
“The fact that some of the projects started out in the W administration is irrelevant. The old blame W thing I suppose. It never do get old with you guys.”

What happened last night was this: you had an Obama who has conducted his administration under the principle of “Why should I be bothered with the minutae of the job as long as I have throngs of adoring and gullible supporters in the liberal media and my “free money” entitlement loving public?”. In his mind he has been made to think that he is a God. When actually faced with having to answer questions, he fell apart. He resorted to the same old tired and unrealistic promises (lies) that he has from the beginning because he knew that none of it would matter because his supporters only care about themselves and not the longterm health of this nation and that would vote for him because of it. He knew that all his supporters really want is a government check and a free ride in one form or the other and that no matter what happened on that stage, he knew he OWNS them. And he does. They are slaves to him to be used as he sees fit. The liberal regulars here and the host are proof of this. The difference in this election will be the ones he does not own outside of the conservative base (which is around 10 % of the voting public) that actually do have to get up and go to work and pay taxes and not sit on their asses all day long and waste their lives on a blog. And, all of those young people that cannot find jobs. You liberals shouldn’t take the youth vote for granted this time around. They have been fed a huge dose of reality of what Obama’s promises really amounted to in 08 which is basically nothing.

Hey Midori, glad you’re here!
I trust all is well and serene in your life.
Been a predictable day here. ’twas noted several times Romney ‘now’ thinks regulations are good and essential to a free market; that he’s not going to give the Job Creators a tax cut (so much for our fellow bloggers lecturing us on that’s how jobs get created) and he’s not going to cut one single cent from education.
Funny thing is, all the bloggers said was ‘our guy won!!” and they completely avoided the fact their guy’s sounding more like a Democrat every day. Which isn’t too astounding, given what passes for Republican orthodoxy nowadays!
So I say let them have their celebration. Maybe someday his new positions will sink in and they’ll realize Romney slapped’em upside the head, But that may not happen. We both know how they react to facts, don’t we?

Not quite true Joe mama. I remember a couple of years ago when Obama was touting all kinds of new jobs being created as green jobs- jobs such as a busdriver on a hybrid bus. Seems like liberals wanted to play fast and loose with the definition of green jobs when it comes to inflating Obama’s jobs numbers but then you want to cry foul when Mitt uses the same criteria. Can’t have it both ways sir. Yet again your argument must be dismissed. And if you’re going to come at me with your nonsense try making it from a neutral source instead of the liberal Washington post. From the guy who complains about heritage. jeez.
I really wish you wouldn’t make it so easy to blow your shyte right outta the water. Dismissed.
“Based on the reluctant testimony from Bureau of Labor Statistics Acting Commissioner John Galvin in a House hearing this week of those Obama administration jobs considered “green jobs,” thousands of other bogus “green jobs” were “created or saved” by President Zero’s “green initiative.” Spending billions of taxpayer stimulus dollars with little to show for it, countless occupations could be included that pad the president’s proclaimed green jobs numbers dramatically.
Rep. Darrell Issa, who serves as chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, suggested during the hearing that antique dealers, oil industry lobbyists, bicycle shop employees, workers at Salvation Army, and bus drivers would also be included among Team Obama “green occupations.” These jobs are based on Team Obama’s own fuzzy definition of what is a “green job.”
Galvin admitted that was true.”

The sc qb isn’t that good? Are you kidding me? I watched him a couple of weeks ago and he threw 20 straight completions. Do you know how hard it is to do that and how rarely that is done? Dawgs are gonna have they hands full with the chickens. Gonna be a good game though. As is Fla-LSU and I think there is one other SEC game that is going to be really good.

Saw Del on last night for the 1st since he took his issue to upper reaches of the Cox hierarchy.
Probably because Wingfield is checking on those sweatshops in China……… I mean at a wedding or something in China

TD
I could be wrong, but I am not as impressed with SCs passing game as I have been the last few yrs.
I would load the box and make their QB beat me. He might do it, but Latimore has proven he surely can do it when GA can’t load the box.
SC on D is pretty good as well. I will be shocked if Dawgs score more than 24.

Fred,
The last 2 times he played against the dawgs I believe he ran for near 300 yards. The dawg defense has been horrendous and has allowed even the really bad teams like FAU and Buffalo to run up and down the field on them. On offense UGA has been lighting it up but they haven’t played one good defense. They will this weekend though.
