An unprepared, unfocused Obama pays the price

obama-romney-debate-AP648260177986_620x350

Remember the classic nightmare in which you show up unprepared for a test in a class that you completely forgot you had?

That’s what Barack Obama looked like last night. From the opening question, he came off as unprepared, unsteady and almost uninterested in the task at hand. He found himself on defense throughout the debate, and when opportunities arose, he failed to recognize them.

As I noted last night during the live blog, Obama seemed overconfident coming in, as if he had underestimated both his opponent and the occasion. By the end of the evening, overconfidence should no longer have been a problem. As CNN noted, 67 percent of those polled who had watched the debate declared Mitt Romney the victor.

“No presidential candidate has topped 60 percent in that question since it was first asked in 1984,” CNN polling director Keating Holland pointed out.

And a good part of that was caused by Mitt Romney. He came in hungry, needing a win, and it showed in his focus and preparation. He got the better of almost every exchange, in part because at some point in his debate prep he decided to finally make the transition from “severely conservative” GOP primary candidate to general-election candidate.

The new Romney endorsed regulation of business. He dismissed tax cuts as an economic policy. He embraced his own Massachusetts health-care plan. He talked of compromise and working together. A surprised Obama wasn’t ready to handle this latest Romney incarnation and repeatedly failed to tie the moderate, genial GOP candidate on that stage in Denver to the GOP candidate on the campaign trail.

Will the outcome of this debate, the first of three between Obama and Romney, create a ripple in the polls? It almost certainly will. I doubt it will cost Obama his lead, but it should shrink it and introduce doubt in many minds that had not previously doubted. Romney had the night that he needed to keep his funders happy and his base engaged.

The next debate, covering foreign and domestic policy in a townhall forum, will be Oct. 16 at Hofstra University in New York. I suspect that they’ll be scrambling at the White House this morning to clear more time from the president’s calendar for prep work between now and then. He can’t afford a repeat of what happened last night in Denver.

So Romney never heard of any tax benefits for American Companies that ship jobs overseas. Pure BS!
Obama detailed in his state of the union address that he wants to lower US corporate tax rates from 35% by taxing the overseas operations of US companies that are not currently taxed. One study found this loophole creates an effective corporate tax rate of 2.5%. Mitt should know- why does he and Bain have companies in the Cayman Island??????????

Orin Hatch and the Republicans have used the same BS argument as Romneys’ to block any change to the tax code that eliminates loopholes for outsourcinjg:.

“”"”"”"”"”"”"Speaking on the House floor, Hatch said it was “misleading” for Democrats to say there is a tax break for outsourcing. Holding up a large book, Hatch said the Democrats were trying to invent controversy.

Congressional analysts at the Joint Committee on Taxation say $14 million could be raised next year from removing outsourcing credits, compared to a cost of $21 million for bringing those jobs back. Hatch points out the relatively low sum has already been passed in Obama campaign ads on the issue.”"”"”"”"”"”"”"”"

I found this in my email today. A telling tale.

Mr. Romney:

I have watched as you campaigned around the country saying that you understand the pain that its citizens are in today. I believe that’s a lie because you’ll never understand. It’s not in your DNA.

My mother retired after working for 25 years making auto tires. She received her small retirement of $285 per month for her hard work and dedication; an amount so small you wouldn’t scoff at it, but it was hers, (she would not have received that if not for belonging to a union). Too young for social security, she went to work as a Walmart greeter, for minimum wage of course, the only thing she could find at her age. When her knees finally gave out she applied for SSI at the age of 62. With combined incomes she received just under $1200 a month. Over the years, due to the increasing cost of medical coverage her retirement has been reduced. She now receives $125 in retirement, thus her total income is just below $1100 a month. Out of that, she pays auto, home, and life insurance, electric, phone, and cable bills, property and car taxes, mail-order prescriptions, buys gas for her car, and hopes nothing breaks because she can’t afford to call a repairman. Groceries are frugal so she applied for EBT assistance. She was told that she makes too much money, but she did qualify for $16 a month due to being over 65. That $16 will buy a gallon of milk and a cheap loaf of bread for the month or put a little meat in her freezer. She gets to choose.

My uncle was in the Korean War. He was the only survivor when his company was attacked. He was somehow overlooked and he watched as all the other men were shot, stabbed, choked, had their throats slit or were bludgeoned to death. He was eventually honorably discharged, but the army never acknowledged his PTSD. He had nightmares for years, breaking out in cold sweats, never forgetting what his friends, the look in their eyes or what they went through as they breathed their last breath. He spent his life suffering with the memory of that day and went to the VA for medical services, as he could not hold down a job. Years later they did acknowledge the PTSD and he received $1700 a month for his service and he found a facility that would take care of him, but that was short lived as was his medical care and he went into a nursing home, all due to his mental illness. At that point, the VA would no longer pay for his care and Medicaid stepped in, but only after he gave any money he had accumulated away. He lived out the remainder of his life in a low grade nursing facility with minimal staff and care, where he died a slow, agonizing death, because no one cared enough to find out what happened to the man back in Korea.

Would you chose to send your sons into a conflict? We know the answer to that.

My sister and her husband are both self-employed. He recently had a heart attack and now has a pre-existing condition. The cost of their insurance premium per month rose from $600 to $1900. They are torn. They don’t know what they can afford… their house note or insurance. Again, someone has to choose.

My neighbor worked for 20 years as a sales rep. He was diagnosed with colon cancer 2 years ago. His insurance through his job paid him a disability of 60% of his pay. Out of that he must pay his insurance premiums. He has gone through his savings, his 401k, and now his employer has the right to let him go since he has been gone for 24 months on medical leave. He can get Cobra, but only if he can afford it. That’s estimated to cost $600 a month. He doesn’t qualify for Medicaid since he has a home and his wife works or Medicare since he is too young. She makes a paltry $30 thousand a year, not enough to cover the Cobra. They can barely pay the bills and are beginning to think that he was worth more dead than alive. If they let the house go, can they make it? He stills has much more to go through as the cancer has spread again. Too many questions, and not any answers.

Listening to my friends and relatives, watching the suffering that they are going through, I’ve come to the conclusion that all this came from the top down. There are too many corporations lining their pockets off the sweat and fear and tears of the everyday person; people who are struggling, literally, to survive. I have zero confidence in you to do anything but continue to take part in your own shenanigans. Even as you wander across the country spreading your lies, you are still a corporate raider. A leopard doesn’t change its spots. Corporations are raiding the American people and laughing at us at the same time and you all think no one notices. You are wrong. Wrong to think that we are stupid or naïve. We see you. And you, Mitt, do not belong anywhere near Pennsylvania Ave.

“More than 58 million people watched the first Presidential debate last night between President Obama and Mitt Romney, up substantially from the first debate in the 2008 election cycle, which had 52.4 million viewers.

Fox News was the most-watched cable news network during the debate, and will likely be the most-watched network on TV, though final broadcast numbers will not be released until after 4 PM.

Fox News, MSNBC, NBC, Fox and CBS are all up from the same debate in 2008, while CNN and ABC are down. In the adults 25-54 demo, FNC and MSNBC are up compared to 2008, while CNN is down.

The 58 million figure (and the 52.4 million figure) does not include coverage on PBS, Univision, C-SPAN, the cable business networks or online.

The numbers:

From 9-10:30 PM

Cable:
FNC: 10,421,380 total viewers, 2,932,907 adults 25-54
CNN: 6,045,109 total viewers, 2,368,589 adults 25-54
MSNBC: 4,710,511 total viewers, 1,852,629 adults 25-54

Broadcast (based on Nielsen Fast Nationals, which could change in finals):
CBS 10,176,000 total viewers
ABC 10,117,000 total viewers
NBC 9,914,000 total viewers
FOX 6,977,000 total viewers

From 8-11 PM, which includes pre- and post-debate analysis:

FNC: 8,181,448 total viewers, 2,159,809 adults 25-54
CNN: 4,763,003 total viewers, 1,851,207 adults 25-54
MSNBC: 3,913,759 total viewers, 1,481,901 adults 25-54″

http://www.mediabistro.com/tvnewser/debate-ratings-fox-news-tops-cable-news-for-first-debate-as-more-people-tune-in-than-2008_b148739

Except that’s not what the topic was in the debate.

What Pres Obama said in the debate was “And part of the way to do it is to not give tax breaks to companies that are shipping jobs overseas.

Right now, you can actually take a deduction for moving a plant overseas. I think most Americans would say that doesn’t make sense. And all that raises revenue. ”

http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/decision2012/2012-presidential-debate-president-obama-and-mitt-romneys-remarks-in-denver-on-oct-3-running-transcript/2012/10/03/24d6eb6e-0d91-11e2-bd1a-b868e65d57eb_story_4.html

A deduction is a benefit but not all benefits are deductions.

Which Romney addressed in his rebuttal when he stated “The second topic, which is you said you get a deduction for taking a plant overseas. ”

The President should have said “receive a tax benefit” if he wanted to pin Romney down. He didn’t, so Romney addressed precisely what Obama alleged.

http://www.ntu.org/governmentbytes/obamas-outsourcing-tax.html

There is no tax break for moving jobs overseas like Obama said. Yes, you can deduct any costs involved – just like you can deduct ANY business expense. Largely this is just playing on the confusion of most people who don’t understand how business deductions are different than personal deductions.

With Personal deductions, there are some very specific things that the government wants to incentivize that they will make deductable. With business deductions, pretty much whatever the business writes a check for is deductable as long as it is an expense in the normal course of doing business.

“Paul Ryan is gonna make Joe Biden cry onstage and hand over his cookies.”

No, that’s not gonna happen… I’m no JB fan, but I don’t think he’ll be on his heels like Obama was last night, and I actually like Ryan (not all of his ideas, but I admire the man…) but JB has a little more time in the arena than he has. Ryan isn’t going to be able to lean on his plans and all he’s championed for the last 2 years because his prospective boss put the kibosh on most of it last night, so he’s down to insults about hair plugs as ammo for the upcoming debate…

Obama is over

October 4th, 2012
3:43 pm

What we saw last night was Obama being confronted by the truth. He lost his grip because he was being challenged by direct questions and was not surrounded by his posse of sychophantic fools. Obama seemed shocked to even have his policies questioned. When not protected by the Alexrod teleprompter filter, Obama comes off as not having an informed opinion. Because he couldn’t blame Bush, make personal attacks, or play the race card, he was forced to defend his record. He was also given the opportunity to describe what a second Obama term would look like and failed. Bernake starting unlimited quantitative easing (and the danger of corresponding inflation) because of concerns over “labor market stagnation” is all you need to know about Obama’s domestic economic policy success. Obama offered no solutions on how he was going to address the problems facing the country. All we got were tired campaign slogans. Romney, on the other hand, was armed with specific data and systematically destroyed Obama’s current programs. The bottom line is that U6 for the 18 to 24 age group in the U.S. is 22%. Over 50% of the 4mm jobs Obama brags about creating have been minimum wage. In 2030, the employee to beneficiary ratio for Social Security will be 2 to 1. GDP growth at less than 2% will not create enough high paying jobs to support the current entitlement system. Obama’s singular success in office has been to create yet another entitlement. Only in Obamaland would insurance eligibility be celebrated as a victory because poverty rates are rising and more people are eligible for government subsidies. Government trickle down economics at its best.

Biden is actually quite the engaging speaker, and has been doing this for a long time. If you ask the audiences who were present when he made his “gaffes”, I suspect they will tell you they had a positive reaction to him.

Why Obama should be President…..

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits climbed 4,000 to a seasonally adjusted 367,000, the Labor Department said. The prior week’s figure was revised up to show 4,000 more applications than previously reported.

ABC News – Kristina Wong
Feb 25, 2010 8:23pm

At the very end of the 7-hour bipartisan summit on health care reform today, President Obama made it very clear where this is headed.

“We cannot have another year-long debate about this,” he said, rejecting Republican calls to scrap the Democrats’ legislation. “So the question that I’m going to ask myself and I ask of all of you is, is there enough serious effort that in a month’s time or a few weeks’ time or six weeks’ time we could actually resolve something?”

“And if we can’t, then I think we’ve got to go ahead and make some decisions,” the president said, “and then that’s what elections are for.”

Concluded the president: “We have honest disagreements about — about the vision for the country and we’ll go ahead and test those out over the next several months till November. All right?”

On his walk back to the White House from the Blair House after the summit, the president was asked if the summit was a success.

“I thought it was a terrific discussion and we’ll see whether it made any difference in terms of people’s attitudes,” he said.

Mitt Romney looked a little uneasy firing Big Bird during Wednesday night’s presidential debate, said body language expert Chris Kowal.

“When he talked about Big Bird he looked down at his right and I suspect he was actually uncomfortable making that point,” Kowal said. “If you’re uncomfortable with something you don’t give great eye contact. You might look away.”

Kowal spent the night after the debate using a computer program to analyze the facial expressions of Romney and President Obama for clues about what they were really thinking during the one-on-one showdown.–ABCNews

For REAL?

Luv’d the last comment:

“If you’re uncomfortable with something you don’t give great eye contact. You might look away.”—-Is that why Obama kept looking down or did he have a hidden teleprompter there?–jonnie36

So what was with Obama’s hands? It’s as if he was trying to squash something.

they both suck,

The irony of writing novels to joe mama? I’ll play along with him for a little while until I feel he’s been schooled a good bit. But when his essays get longer and longer it gets old pretty quick. Something I think is mentally wrong with this guy cause all he wants to do is argue with everybody. Its like he lives to blog battle every day. I just warn him a few times to make it shorter and keep it brief and like a petulant child he just keeps writing essays. Eventually I just tell him to get his last word in so that we can move along. Its like arguing with a child and in joe’s case you just eventually let him have his last word so that he will like he won something.
