Remember the classic nightmare in which you show up unprepared for a test in a class that you completely forgot you had?
That’s what Barack Obama looked like last night. From the opening question, he came off as unprepared, unsteady and almost uninterested in the task at hand. He found himself on defense throughout the debate, and when opportunities arose, he failed to recognize them.
As I noted last night during the live blog, Obama seemed overconfident coming in, as if he had underestimated both his opponent and the occasion. By the end of the evening, overconfidence should no longer have been a problem. As CNN noted, 67 percent of those polled who had watched the debate declared Mitt Romney the victor.
“No presidential candidate has topped 60 percent in that question since it was first asked in 1984,” CNN polling director Keating Holland pointed out.
And a good part of that was caused by Mitt Romney. He came in hungry, needing a win, and it showed in his focus and preparation. He got the better of almost every exchange, in part because at some point in his debate prep he decided to finally make the transition from “severely conservative” GOP primary candidate to general-election candidate.
The new Romney endorsed regulation of business. He dismissed tax cuts as an economic policy. He embraced his own Massachusetts health-care plan. He talked of compromise and working together. A surprised Obama wasn’t ready to handle this latest Romney incarnation and repeatedly failed to tie the moderate, genial GOP candidate on that stage in Denver to the GOP candidate on the campaign trail.
Will the outcome of this debate, the first of three between Obama and Romney, create a ripple in the polls? It almost certainly will. I doubt it will cost Obama his lead, but it should shrink it and introduce doubt in many minds that had not previously doubted. Romney had the night that he needed to keep his funders happy and his base engaged.
The next debate, covering foreign and domestic policy in a townhall forum, will be Oct. 16 at Hofstra University in New York. I suspect that they’ll be scrambling at the White House this morning to clear more time from the president’s calendar for prep work between now and then. He can’t afford a repeat of what happened last night in Denver.

So here’s a question; I hear some on the left using the excuse for the last four years about “the republican’s in congress have stopped everything he has tried to do”. So, by default, shouldn’t that mean that the Clinton years and the economic boom at that time should be attributed to the Republican controlled congress? I mean…if the republican’s being in control of just one of the branches can stop someone from being effective, shouldn’t they then get the credit if they control both?

Cons – how do you justify voting for someone who doesn’t have a consistent stance on ANYTHING?
Really? I was actually shocked last night that Romney did such a great job of articulating a true conservative philosophy. (I always thought he was a moderate and did not vote for him in the primary). His explanation of the role and scope of the Federal government was the best I have heard from a Republican Presidential candidate since Reagan. Individual policy positions while being a candidate mean nothing because they will change but when one goes into a creating legislation negotiation with good conservative values is worth way more then a stump speech individual policy position.

That teacher seems to have handled the matter in a very poor manner.
If the school or school district has a policy against T-shirts with slogans or political messages (I know some school districts do), then IMO the teacher should have explained the matter and referred it to the principal or assistant principal — allowing them to sort it out. No way the teacher should have dealt with it alone.
If the school/school district had no policy against it, then tough darts, Teach. Suck it up.
FWIW, the SCOTUS has ruled that students have *limited* rights to freedom of expression, and that schools can infringe upon them in quite a few cases and ways. But even so, this teacher screwed up royally IMO. Maybe the Social Studies teacher can use this as a lesson for the kids on how the First Amendment works.

I hated the fact that the moderator did not demand Mitt answer the question about whether or not he supports vouchers. As far s the debate is concerned, 85% of us have made up our minds. I doubt very seriously a candidate who has been prepped and coached for two weeks will do anything to change our minds. If I were coached for two weeks I could debate both of them. Anyway, a reporter who was at debate last night said he spoke to some of the undecided and independents and they told him that Mitt did very little to sway them. So, he cautioned against us buying into the pondits who are spinning this their way. In the end the only that counts is votes!!!

If you don’t think that some on the left gave NO respect for W since the day the man walked into office then I just don’t know what to say to that.
Now that you’ve set fire to your strawman, why not actually address what I said vs what you think I’m saying. I never stated that Bush didn’t get heat from day one. I said that he had higher ratings from both sides of the political spectrum than Obama ever had. Now, after I explain myself, I’ll give you a link so you can see for yourself.
Bush entered office with a lower approval rating than Obama which was probably somewhat related to the recount in Florida. After 9/11, his approval rating hit upwards near 90% and started a slow and stead descent from that point.
Obama entered office with a higher approval rating that Bush, and his highest approval rating occured about 100 days into his term at 66%. Since then, his approval rating has steadily dropped.
If you compare the approval rating from opposing parties, at this current time in office, Bush’s approval from Democrats was still higher than Obama’s current approval by Republicans. Bush did have 9/11 to his credit. That said, his approval rating decline, by the opposition, was a bit more steady and slower than Obama’s
