Remember the classic nightmare in which you show up unprepared for a test in a class that you completely forgot you had?
That’s what Barack Obama looked like last night. From the opening question, he came off as unprepared, unsteady and almost uninterested in the task at hand. He found himself on defense throughout the debate, and when opportunities arose, he failed to recognize them.
As I noted last night during the live blog, Obama seemed overconfident coming in, as if he had underestimated both his opponent and the occasion. By the end of the evening, overconfidence should no longer have been a problem. As CNN noted, 67 percent of those polled who had watched the debate declared Mitt Romney the victor.
“No presidential candidate has topped 60 percent in that question since it was first asked in 1984,” CNN polling director Keating Holland pointed out.
And a good part of that was caused by Mitt Romney. He came in hungry, needing a win, and it showed in his focus and preparation. He got the better of almost every exchange, in part because at some point in his debate prep he decided to finally make the transition from “severely conservative” GOP primary candidate to general-election candidate.
The new Romney endorsed regulation of business. He dismissed tax cuts as an economic policy. He embraced his own Massachusetts health-care plan. He talked of compromise and working together. A surprised Obama wasn’t ready to handle this latest Romney incarnation and repeatedly failed to tie the moderate, genial GOP candidate on that stage in Denver to the GOP candidate on the campaign trail.
Will the outcome of this debate, the first of three between Obama and Romney, create a ripple in the polls? It almost certainly will. I doubt it will cost Obama his lead, but it should shrink it and introduce doubt in many minds that had not previously doubted. Romney had the night that he needed to keep his funders happy and his base engaged.
The next debate, covering foreign and domestic policy in a townhall forum, will be Oct. 16 at Hofstra University in New York. I suspect that they’ll be scrambling at the White House this morning to clear more time from the president’s calendar for prep work between now and then. He can’t afford a repeat of what happened last night in Denver.

David Axelrod, President Barack Obama’s top strategist, has said that the campaign will take a ‘hard look’ at how to approach future debates and admitted that ‘I’m sure that we will make adjustments’.
All but stating that Mitt Romney had won the Denver debate, Axelrod conceded that the performance aspect was ‘not the President’s strong suit in these events’ but insisted that ‘I don’t see us adding huge amounts of additional prep time’.
Axelrod, speaking on a campaign conference call, made an appeal to reporters to make the points that Obama himself had failed to make in the debate

So what happens when after a few days, reality sets in that the numbers Mitt had last night, and all his arguments were based on lies? What will the undecided’s say then? If you are an undecided voter, (not many of them here, myself included) it is because you are looking really, really deep into what the candidates are saying. Now undecided’s pretty much know what Obama has said because he hasn’t changed his stance in the four years he has been our President. Mitt on the other hand, changes his stance depeneding on who he is sitting in front of. If you are undecided, I suspect you are not happy with the results of last night’s debate because if you thought you knew where Mitt stood, your totally confused now. Even his campaign today is walking back some of what he said, like pre=extising conditions are NOT covered under whatever plan he has.

Doom — ““Foolish fabulism”? Just what I’ve come to expect from Joe. How unfortunate.”
It’s precisely what you did. You posited that I was going to bring up that guy from the commercial when I had no intention of doing anything of the sort. It was a pathetic and dishonest tactic on your part and you should be ashamed of it.
“Ownership does not imply leadership???”
Yes. Bain *owned* companies. Bain did not *control and direct their daily operations.*
“Bumper sticker sloganeering is not a credible response in my book.”
Good. That’s why I didn’t engage in it.
“Try again sir.”
No. Bain did not control and direct the day-to-day operations of those companies. Therefore, there was no “leadership” on Romney’s part going on there.
“And if you would like to demonstrate how Romney’s advice, capital, and consulting didn’t help turn around and make many of these companies successful then I would be happy to reconsider.”
I don’t need you to reconsider. I’ve already stated my opinion on the matter. If you want me to reconsider, then I’ve told you what you need to do.
“The track record of success is there. And your feeble attempts to tear down his successful track record aint gonna change that.”
One can’t tear down what doesn’t exist.
“Only a fool would believe that Romney didn’t have a hand in helping to bring in or hire outside consultants or executive leadership in any of these companies.”
Since you apparently didn’t catch my question, I’ll ask again. How many hiring decisions did Romney personally get involved in? If you think Romney did so much hiring, then you should be able to show me some hiring that he actually performed.
“Ah yes. I wondered when Joe was going to get to the part about closing facilities and plants.”
Shorter Doom: I got nothin.
“As you well know Joe when you are a venture capitalist or private equity capitalist you are not going to be able to save every company you take over. Some of them are going to fail no matter how hard you try to turn them around.”
I’m aware of that.
“But like I said go ahead and focus on the few failures since it fits the pre conceived narrative that you are trying to lay out. It doesn’t change the big picture. And the big picture is that while there were some inevitable failures along the way Bain capital helped turn around and grow some remarkable business enterprises such as target, sports authority, and other companies.”
No, there’s no big picture here. Another poster (USMC) made a specific assertion. I responded *specifically* to that assertion. You have no effective refutation *to* my response, and so you appear to be trying to broaden the argument.
Romney isn’t, IMO a “captain of industry” since he’s got no *industrial* experience. And he’s not, IMO, a “leader of men” because he didn’t actually *lead* the companies that Bain owned — whether we’re talking about ones that succeeded or ones that failed.
You simply leapt into the middle of a discussion with *your* preconceived notions and narrative, and didn’t bother paying close attention to what I was saying and responding too. Typical Doom.
“Your attacks on Romney and Bain”
I didn’t attack Romney or Bain. I simply refuted a couple of incorrect assertions about Romney. Pay attention, Doom.
“aren’t going to change the enormous overall successes that they had. But keep shooting your spitballs at that battleship of success if it makes ya feel better.”
(laughing, pointing)
“Joe mama trying to tear down an American success story like Bain capital and all the companies they helped make successful. Sad.”

Dear Black Guy @ 1:18, I heard that line attributed to Dennis Miller.
I respectfully disagree with one element of our host’s thesis, “at some point in his debate prep he decided to finally make the transition from “severely conservative” GOP primary candidate to general-election candidate” All of Mr. Romney’s winning arguments (as opposed to “sound bites”) sounded like they were taken from the chapter “John Galt Speaks.” The debate was won by a full-throated rebuke of leftism, the ferocity of which was seemingly outside the scope of Mr. Obama’s preparation. The real change in the evening was that, perhaps for the first time, Mr. Romney looked presidential, and Chauncey did not. POTUS will have to raise his game above sound bites and platitudes against the republican.
Best I recall, the 2008 debates were a push between Chauncey and Captain Queeg. Romney is no dunce.

High-School Teacher Threatens To Assault Student For Wearing Romney T-Shirt, Likens It To KKK Sheet
Racism has again raised its ugly head in this presidential election and it has filtered all the way down to the classroom level where, in Philadelphia, a high school student was threatened with assault by her geometry teacher last Friday for wearing a Mitt Romney t-shirt.
According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, last Friday was dress-down day for students at Charles Carroll High School in Port Richmond. One female student decided that she would show her support for Republican presidential candidate a Mitt Romney by wearing a Romney t-shirt.
That’s when things turned ugly for her in the “Democratic school.”
The teacher allegedly told the girl to take off the shirt, saying it was like wearing a Ku Klux Klan sheet. The teacher allegedly threatened to use a marker to cross out Romney’s name and that of Rep. Paul Ryan, his running mate. The teacher also allegedly tried to throw the student out of class.
The teacher also allegedly said that Carroll was “a Democratic” school.

Now, after all of this blind ideological support, this is what we end up with. That goes for the main stream media as well. They have sandbagged, glossed over the truth, left out countless things that the electorate should know and what do they have to show for it? A narcissistic buffoon who thinks that all this debate business is really below his station and that people like Romney shouldn’t even bother to call him to task because, for Christ’s sake, HE IS THE PRESIDENT. Maybe so.-JHM
No maybe about it.

With all due respect, Doom, please stop trying to tell me what my argument is. And if you’re not going to pay attention to my arguments before you post in response to them, then please stop making a fuss.-JHM
Make a logical, relevant point and I will respond. Ramble off on some irrelevance just to hear yourself and you’re just wasting my time.
“You’re but one poster and I don’t have time to answer essays all day from one poster. Please keep it short if you wish to converse.”
I will post how I please, within the bounds set by our host. You are free to respond (or not) as you wish.-JHM
Yep. And you’ve been warned. Make sense, keep it relevant and to the point and I will school you in short order. Keep rambling and I won’t pay you no mind.
“Now to the point about regulation. I don’t know anyone who opposes common sense regulation. It is the reason why I will not eat farm raised seafood from southeast Asia. Our stuff is safe because of regulation. Theirs is not. Your meme that cons believe that all regulation is bad is not only inaccurate but tiresome.”
I raised no meme on that point. Once again, you misunderstood my point and then presumed that your incorrect understanding was exactly what I was trying to get across. It’s not.- Joe mama
My interpretation was quite accurate- that you’re rambling again about some irrelevant and pointless nonsense.
You posited that I was arguing that government and the citizenry were working at cross purposes (e.g. “Looks like you and big gubment know better than these *unsophisticated consumers* that you deride.”) I was *actually* trying to point out that government regulation can and does make the lives of the citizenry better and that regulation isn’t by definition a bad thing. For your part, you erroneously presumed that I was mocking “unsophisticated consumers” (I wasn’t — I was pointing out that they need and deserve this sort of help) and you erroneously mocked government by calling it “gubment” when it is, in fact, a key player in this dynamic.- Joe mama
There was nothing erroneous about it. You were mocking people you deem to be *unsophisticated consumers*. Its right there in black and white. And it shows your arrogance sir.
“Yes. But again. The point has little if any relevance to what we’re talking about.”
It’s got plenty of relevance. You just keep missing my point-JHM
Nope. You keep going off on a tangent that has little if any validity.
“And again. You’re not dispelling any new wisdom on anyone but are simply adding more stuff to read.”
Evelyn Wood is ready when you are, Doom. -JHM
Is that all ya got? Can’t respond to the fact that you’re just posting a bunch of meaningless crap?
“If you want to debate then fine. But keep it short to 1 or 2 points for the sake of brevity if you would. That way we can both address other posters and points as well.”
Work harder. Work faster. Try to keep up. -JHM
Why? So I can waste my time addressing rambling gobbledeegook that has no pertinence? No thanks. And don’t bother with any more essays.
Go ahead and get in the last word so that you can feel like you’ve one upped someone today.

Over 65 million television sets were tuned to the debate. I think that set a record for debates.
Between the 9:00 until 10:30 slot, FOX NEWS, yes FOX NEWS had the most viewers at 10.4 million, which was more than either NBC; CBS; ABC; CNN; or any other network, either broadcast or cable.

Never, ever admitting that those positions would have had them branding Romney as a RINO, a liberal, a heretic, just a few months ago.
And they don’t even see (or refuse to even look at) what it says about the arguments they’ve been putting out.
But intellectual consistency has never really been an issue, has it?”

Well last night was surly a wake up call for President Obama and his handlers; however, the sad reality is that it is going to take more than one great debate to win the election given that most democRats are not very intelligent or free thinking.
DemocRats are usually of lower intelligence and easily fooled and led to the trough by their leaders as exampled by this typical democRat follower:

Last night Romney said those red-meat words again: “We have a responsibility to protect the lives and liberties of our people, and that means a military second to none. I do not believe in cutting our military. I believe in maintaining the strength of America’s military. ”
The moderator needs to ask Romney if we’re second to any country now. If not, are we close to second? If not, then why give the military $2 TRILLION for which they haven’t shown any need? If he thinks every program in the military is vital and can’t be cut? So (and this is one our cons on Jay’s blog won’t go near) he will keep the military biofuels program for ships and aircraft?
But people who get red meat don’t stop to think about what’s being tossed to them.

Doom — “Rejected. I didn’t come across like a Richard today.”
Denied. You did. And you got it dealt right back at you.
“You did. And as you well know I’m quite capable of blog beating you down and making you submit”
(laughing, pointing)
Sonny, if you *ever* manage to do that — even once — I’ll leave for good.
“today is just your latest beatdown.”
Punkin, what you term a “beatdown” isn’t much different from me having to change your diaper while you’re squalling and pitching a fit. (giggling)
“Yesterday TC had to humiliate you and send you into your ususal semantics and tap dancing retreat.”
Yesterday, you and TC both got embarrassed because your collective reading comprehension is so poor.
“Hell you had to resort to the petty insults today in a nanosecond because”
Because you started off with them yourself, Doom.
“once again you got taken to school Joe.”
And once again, your delusions of superiority mislead you.
“You let your anger come across way too easily when you are being bested.”
Oh, Doomie, you’re too CUTE for me to ever be angry at you. (laughing)
“I’m afraid not. I posted your silly insult. That is proof right there.”
Do you not even read the stuff you post? (laughing)
“The fact that you choose to stubbornly ignore the proof posted right there in your face is not unusual.”
Yes, I posted the insult you began with and which I responded to. It’s not surprising that you would ignore it.
“And apparently you are not obliged to make sense either.”
If you don’t understand me, then you should ask for clarification instead of presuming or instead of being a Richard about it. That would be the polite and adult thing to do.
“I’m paying attention. You’re just not making any sense and rambling on about irrlevant nonsense.”
If you don’t understand me, then you should ask for clarification instead of presuming or instead of being a Richard about it. That would be the polite and adult thing to do.
“Rejected. I’ve responded and destroyed your points quite well. And that is what really has you upset.”
If you don’t understand me, then you should ask for clarification instead of presuming or instead of being a Richard about it. That would be the polite and adult thing to do.
“Again. Because its irrelevant. Pointless too.”
If you don’t understand me, then you should ask for clarification instead of presuming or instead of being a Richard about it. That would be the polite and adult thing to do.
“No maybe about it.”
Then maybe I shall.
“Make a logical, relevant point and I will respond. Ramble off on some irrelevance just to hear yourself and you’re just wasting my time.”
If you don’t understand me, then you should ask for clarification instead of presuming or instead of being a Richard about it. That would be the polite and adult thing to do.
“Yep. And you’ve been warned.”
Bring it then, tough guy. (giggling)
“Make sense, keep it relevant and to the point and I will school you in short order. Keep rambling and I won’t pay you no mind.”
Pull that trigger then, tough guy. Throw me in that briar patch. (laughing, pointing)
“My interpretation was quite accurate- that you’re rambling again about some irrelevant and pointless nonsense.”
If you don’t understand me, then you should ask for clarification instead of presuming or instead of being a Richard about it. That would be the polite and adult thing to do.
“There was nothing erroneous about it. You were mocking people you deem to be *unsophisticated consumers*.
Lying Doom lies again. I’ve already clarified my comments, and your interpretation today is — just as your interpretation was yesterday — incorrect.
“Its right there in black and white. And it shows your arrogance sir.”
If you don’t understand me, then you should ask for clarification instead of presuming or instead of being a Richard about it. That would be the polite and adult thing to do.
“Nope. You keep going off on a tangent that has little if any validity.”
If you don’t understand me, then you should ask for clarification instead of presuming or instead of being a Richard about it. That would be the polite and adult thing to do.
“Is that all ya got? Can’t respond to the fact that you’re just posting a bunch of meaningless crap?”
If you don’t understand me, then you should ask for clarification instead of presuming or instead of being a Richard about it. That would be the polite and adult thing to do.
“Why? So I can waste my time addressing rambling gobbledeegook that has no pertinence? No thanks. And don’t bother with any more essays.”
If you don’t understand me, then you should ask for clarification instead of presuming or instead of being a Richard about it. That would be the polite and adult thing to do.
“Go ahead and get in the last word so that you can feel like you’ve one upped someone today.”
