In case you missed it, last night we observed a test of the right-wing emergency bombshell system. It was only a test. If this had been an actual right-wing emergency bombshell ….
But it wasn’t.
In the early evening hours yesterday, Sean Hannity, Matt Drudge and Tucker Carlson started promoting what they claimed to be a “devastating” and previously unknown video of Barack Obama that would completely remake the 2012 presidential race. It would be a bombshell, a game-changer, an “October surprise” that would prove Obama to be an anti-white racist, just as they knew all along. It would do to the incumbent what the “47 percent” tape had done to Mitt Romney, if not worse.
And just to build the suspense, the world was told that for maximum impact, the bombshell tape would be released by Hannity and Carlson simultaneously at 9 p.m., Hannity on his Fox News program and Carlson at his Daily Caller site. Over the next few hours, giddy conservatives practiced their victory dance and whipped each other into an anticipatory frenzy over the video that would finally bring down their hated bête noire.
Nine o’clock came, the tape was released and … ppfffffffffft. Nothing. As in, literally nothing.
I don’t know Hannity personally. Never met the man. So I would have a hard time saying with certainty that he’s a racist fool. But after the way he behaved last night, I have no problem saying that he plays a racist fool on television. The same is true of Drudge and Carlson. In their “big reveal” on Fox, Hannity and Carlson tried vainly to pretend the tape was something it clearly is not, and they made themselves and their followers appear ridiculous in the process.
Here’s the reality:
The tape in question came from a 2007 speech by Obama at Hampton University, a historically black college in Virginia. The five-year-old speech had been reported on extensively at the time it was delivered by, among many others, Brit Hume of Fox News and by Carlson himself, on his ill-fated MSNBC show. As Dylan Byers reports at Politico, “The speech was also covered by CNN, NBC News, ABC News, The Associated Press, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Chicago Tribune, and the Chicago Sun-Times, among others.”
In fact, the speech was so well known that Politico had cited a portion of it as No. 3 on its list of the top 10 gaffes of the 2008 political campaign.
In the speech, Obama dared to suggest that race — along with the Bush administration’s “colorblind incompetence” — had played a role in the excruciatingly slow response to New Orleans’ plight in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. He was right; it did. Even if you disagree with that assessment, making such a suggestion is certainly not evidence that Obama hates white people, as Hannity and others now try to claim.
Obama also spoke kindly of his minister at the time, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, thanking him for bringing him to Christ. (The speech occurred before the falling-out between the two men.) He talked about the necessity of addressing poverty in the black community, including the need to “help with basic skills — how to show up to work on time, wear the right clothes, and act appropriately in an office. We have to help them get there.”
None of that is new. None of that is scandalous. Yet last night, Hannity and Carlson did their best to pretend otherwise. They even tried to gin up outrage that in a speech to a black audience, Obama adopted a more “black” way of speaking, which they claim to find deeply disturbing.
Seriously? I no doubt speak slightly differently with my Yankee cousins in Massachusetts than I do with my southern cousins in North Carolina. I speak differently in my professional capacity than when I’m having a beer at the bar or playing golf. We all do it to a degree, subconsciously, as a way of establishing common ground with our audience. At this point, if it is truly a scandal to you that black Americans speak differently when talking “among themselves,” I urge you to get out more often and participate in the 21st century.
In other words, this was not a bombshell, and it is devastating only in the sense that it exposes just how cynically and effectively the right-wing media manipulates its core audience, particularly on matters involving race. As U.S. Rep. Allen West of all people put it afterward, “What’s the ‘So what’ of this video? I don’t think it’s going to really go anywhere.”
Elsewhere, other segments of the right-wing media strained to find ways not to dismiss the video as the nonsense it truly is. On Fox News, transcript available here Greta Van Susteren and Newt Gingrich basically acknowledged that the tape is much ado about nothing, yet somehow pretended to be offended at how the media have covered it. Erick Erickson at Redstate took much the same tack, arguing that the video “is damning not of Barack Obama….The video is damning of the media.”
It is an odd argument. You concede that the video is of little consequence, then blame the media for not hyping it to the skies in the name of balance? Even the folks at Fox News understand the lunacy of that claim. If you read its muted account of the video, it is clearly attempting to put as much distance as possible between itself and this “controversy.”
The biggest tell of all, however, comes from the Romney campaign. It is sorely in need of a bombshell and a game-changer, and as it showed in its overly eager response to the tragedy in Libya, it is ready to pounce on any perceived opportunity. But in this case, it has refused to comment on the tape except to note — no doubt accurately — that it had nothing to do with its over-hyped release.
“What is the news?” Romney communications director Gail Gitcho asked in an email to Buzzfeed. “I don’t know.”
Something tells me that Romney will not be using footage of the Obama speech in his campaign ads. In fact, Romney adviser Kevin Madden made it pretty clear this morning that they want nothing to do with it. When asked whether the video was relevant, he said that “Voters … need to look at that video and make up their minds on that individually. I think what’s more important to this debate right now are the president’s policies are the president’s record over these four years. That is going to be the most important topic on stage tonight.”
The Republican National Committee also declined to comment.
On the other hand, the response among many on the left has been to mock conservatives for being suckered in by the hype from Hannity, Drudge and Carlson, and at one level I get that. But I find this whole thing troubling. It bothers me that a significant number of Americans have allowed their hopes and fears to be manipulated by people such as Hannity, who see them as nothing more than marks to be fleeced. They are being played, and it is not a fun thing to watch.
Trapped within the right-wing echo chamber, they have not only lost touch with their fellow Americans, they have lost a sense of perspective as well. When something like this comes along, they respond to it as instructed and then are dumbfounded to find that the American mainstream sees it entirely differently. They cannot understand how something that makes such a big noise within the echo chamber has almost no resonance outside it, so they explain it away as media bias.
It is not media bias. Why do you think the Romney camp is keeping this whole mess at arm’s length? It’s because they understand that “scandals” ginned up for consumption within the right-wing mediasphere simply do not play well among Americans in general. They are professionals, and they recognize the disconnect that exists between reality as depicted within that echo chamber and the reality as experienced by the rest of the country. If they allow those two worlds to collide, they will lose and they know it.
That disconnect is dangerous. It is dangerous for those on the right who find themselves increasingly alienated and estranged from their fellow Americans, and it is dangerous for the rest of the country as well. It is particularly dangerous for the conservative movement, which has an essential role to play in our nation’s future. But it cannot fulfill that function trapped in a separate world of its own creation.

Doom — “Yep.”
Nope.
“You yourself stated that as a presidential candidate that Romney should release 10 years of tax returns and I believe you also mentioned that his father also did so.”
I did say that, but that’s not what you just claimed I said. So you earn a GOALPOST MOVEMENT ALERT. There’s a big difference between saying ‘I think a candidate should release ten years of taxes’ (which I did say) and saying ‘Mitt Romney cheated on his taxes for ten years’ (which I did not say). Maybe if you look real close, you can spot that difference, too.
“No doubt about it. You and other liberals put the onus on Romney to prove Reid wrong.”
Nope. That’s not what I said and I challenge you to prove otherwise.
“The fact that you are now trying to dishonestly say that this didn’t happen does not surprise me in the least.”
Sorry, Doom, but you’re either suffering from a faulty memory or outright dishonesty. I remember the discussion QUITE well, and you were just as shrill and dishonest in your misrepresentations of my position then as you’re being right now. We DID have this discussion. It just didn’t happen the way you’re remembering it.

One thing you learn from reading the comments. Fox, Rush, hannity, etc. have done a really good job of painting a broad portion of the people in this country as moochers. It doesn’t matter that most of the people in the famous 47% actually have jobs or retired from jobs and just make so little that they don’t owe taxes. It doesn’t matter that they work all day mopping floors or frying burgers, emptying bedpans or earning tax free dollars because they’re in the armed services and serving in a combat zone. None of that matters, because your thought leaders have told you that they all want a hand out and that Obama plans on giving them one.
Are there people who want hand outs? Sure. Some of them are lazy bums and some of them are big corporations that want tax breaks or to be freed from safety regulations. I haven’t seen anything Obama has done to favor the lazy bums over the corporations. In fact, if you just look at how the Dow Jones Industrial Average has moved under Obama (up 60% vs. down 25% under Bush), you could easily say that the corporations have done quite well under Obama. But that’s ok, don’t let the real facts interfere with the imagined world you live in. Just remember to get your investments to the Caymans if Romney should win this thing – it’s the only way you’ll have anything left.

The Republican brand is depreciating faster than a used Ford Tempo.
People are recognizing that these are desperate people who want power so badly that they will change the definition of ridiculous to get it.
Obama was right. The Bush administration’s response to hurricane Katrina was one of the
greatest failures of any American presidency. History has already made sure of that, since
Bush proved to the world that America is capable of electing and operating a Third World government.
Republican desperation and their exhibit of it is good for the country. We all get to see that
these are not Americans who are sincerely trying to help the country. These are political
and hand held hack saws who will drag themselves through sewers, pick up road kill for
food, and denigrate any person, and institution, exploit any lie, manufacture any scandal,
manipulate any person to appear to be useful Americans.
We are all getting to know better.
Let them continue. The higher the monkey climbs the more it is exposed.

“This program has been around for years. According to the FCC, the government has been subsidizing landlines since 1984; the program, now called LifeLine, added mobile phones in 1997. LifeLine was enhanced in 2005 during the Bush administration, and TracFone’s SafeLink, the first purely free LifeLine phone brand, started disbursing free phones in 2008.”

Thanks for the link. It’s a good read. The paragraph in your excerpt showed that phone companies don’t have to pass along the charge to their customers. The paragraph before that was also interesting.
“All telecommunications service providers and certain other providers of telecommunications MUST (emphasis mine) contribute to the federal USF based on a percentage of their end-user telecommunications revenues. These companies include wireline telephone companies, wireless telephone companies, and certain Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) providers.
Godless heathen was mistaken about phone companies having to collect it from their customers, but right about it being a tax.

I think my co-worker Jamaican speech therapist is a racist. When she speaks to me at work, she has no accent at all, not Jamaican, not British, nothing. When she talks on the phone to her parents however, she has a thick Jamaican accent, to the point where I can hardly understand a word she says. The only thing I’m not sure about is whether she is being racist toward me or her parents. Maybe the wing nuts can help me figure this out.

Over others, if the “others” are cheezy cable tv political punditry shows, I guess this “superiority” is meaningful.
Bigger picture, though, it amounts to something like 1-2% or so of the adult American population on a given evening, during their most popular programming; I think people on both sides tend to overstate its influence, frankly.

The answer is complicated, but it has nothing to do with responding to a gov’t subsidy, as you claim. The linkage of poverty to high birth rate occurs in every society regardless of the extent of gov’t safety net. In fact, it’s probably more apparent in societies with no safety net at all, because the poverty is deeper there.

Have any of you actually opened your mind and watched this video? Even though this video was recorded many years ago it is as current as if he said it yesterday. His policies are very consistent with this message. The Government will solve all your problems! We will educate everyone, heal everyone, solve everyone’s problems. The President is pegging us versus them throughout this message. I have a difficulty with his message. There is no personal accountability for anything. He asks why is our government not helping the impoverished single mothers. My question to the President is why aren’t the fathers taking their responsibility for the children they helped to conceive? It is not rich vs poor. It is those who work hard for everything they got vs. those who have a sense of entitlement. He talks about “the poor having to commute for over an hour every day”, I had to commute for over an hour every day, yet I did not expect to get a free ride. Please watch the video first before you comment or just put your head in the sand and it all will be well!

And he has converted NASA into an outreach program for his fellow Muslims. We are inundated with constant excuses for his abysmal failures. One of them can’t be that he is too stressed. Jug Ears is definitely the most relaxed occupant of the White House. It costs us 20 times more to give our teleprompter reader a vacation than Britain spends on the entire Royal Family.

What strikes me about this piece by Jay, and I haven’t seen the video, is what great wordy lengths Jay has gone to on this particular topic. I’m just saying that Jay really worked very hard to make his critique as convincing as he possibly could. Here’s the rub; the left will vote for Oblunda and the right will vote for Mittens and the middle will split in favor of Romney and Romney will win. It is really just that simple.

Actually, it was only current in 2007 before Obama got to be President and we knew what we had in him. Now, it’s just regurgitated nonsense that tastes just as bad as the first time we were asked to swallow it.

Joe Mama,
“No doubt about it. You and other liberals put the onus on Romney to prove Reid wrong.”- Doom
Nope. That’s not what I said and I challenge you to prove otherwise.- Joe mama
I will defer to Towncrier’s post at 11:47 in which your argument was completely eviscerated.
“The fact that you are now trying to dishonestly say that this didn’t happen does not surprise me in the least.”- Doom
Sorry, Doom, but you’re either suffering from a faulty memory or outright dishonesty. I remember the discussion QUITE well, and you were just as shrill and dishonest in your misrepresentations of my position then as you’re being right now. We DID have this discussion. It just didn’t happen the way you’re remembering it.- Joe mama
Well Joe it looks like TC’s 11:47 post completely validated my point. But you were right in one respect. Your criticism of Romney was much more severe and outlandish then I remembered-The repost of yours that TC presented at 11:47 where you flat out accuse Romney of tax malfeasance several times in one paragraph with not a scintilla of evidence. You just think it therefore it must be.
Was what it that you were saying about egg on my face???
Anyway, I think you’ve been nailed red handed and have suffered enough humiliation for one day. No sense in me piling on anymore. I suspect you will respond with some more nonsense about goal post moving, parsing of words, and semantics games now that TC exposed you in such devastating fashion.

The old-fashioned Georgia racism displayed here on a daily basis makes me long for Texas. And that’s saying something. It’s no wonder you people are scraping the bottom of the education barrel.
Whether you believe in Creation or evolution, you’re right on either account (this isn’t where this post is going, but indulge me for a second please…)
Forget how we got here for the sake of this argument, the fact is, we’ve all evolved. The question is: to what extent were we allowed to evolve? I’m going to submit to many of you who have never thought this through, that the black American population has only been allowed to evolve at a much slower, much less-than-complete pace. (I should stop here and say that I mean social evolution, lest someone accuse me of claiming we’re primitive beasts -__-).
HOW can you expect education equality when the black community in America is at a generational disadvantage? When our earliest American ancestors were forbidden by law to be educated? When our MUCH more recent ancestors were forbidden — by law and by practice — to achieve higher education? These things pass down, we don’t have generations upon generations to turn back to for guidance today.
HOW can you expect us to obtain financial equality when black Americans are at a generational disadvantage? When our earliest ancestors were stripped of all ability to amass ANY financial gain, let alone any real wealth? Wealth passed among MULTIPLE generations is virtually non-existent in the black American community at this point, yet somehow we are to believe that the racial gap in financial achievement is somehow due to lack of aspiration and not by force? These things pass down, we don’t have generations of generations to look to for guidance today.
I could go on, but the fact is, we KNOW you and your fathers aren’t responsible for slavery. WE, America are responsible. And much of our power is built upon the backs of those who reap little of it’s benefits. So, no, “racism” isn’t an overused word today. Maybe it’s less obvious to you, many of my white brothers & sisters, but then again why would you notice it?

Donna, how did you commute? Did you ride on tax funded roads or ride in a tax subsidized transit system? Now, that we’ve established that you use government aid, let’s talk about helping other people. One way to help impoverished mothers (or anyone) is to get them working, which is probably going to require some education, etc. Even better would be to support Planned Parenthood and help people who cannot afford to raise children avoid unwanted pregnancies. Ignoring them, letting them starve and slowing turning the middle class into the poor through outsourcing, corporate restructuring and continued wage cuts only adds to their numbers. That’s the Republican solution.

Jay best ever.
One thing the right wants is control, and the reason they want control is so they can select who they associated with socially and business wise. They don’t want to make America better they want to make themselves better. I am a white southern American that gets mistaken as one of them very often. I hear their comments and it is isolation with lip service to the constitution, and hired help. These tapes on the 47% are consistent with what I hear out of this crowd all the time. No real bombshell to me, just wonder what all the country thought Romney was thinking before this came out. Who needed proof? A lot of the educated older crowd have tone it down because it embarrasses the now grown children to have such ignorance representing them. But the blue collar whites have replaced the fallout, and most of the older educated whites have a secret society that loosens their tongues on these matters when in private. Can you imagine being a minority working in one of the country clubs in Atlanta and hearing the comments I know they hear.
Now Obama represents the whole country. One of the great distaste of the rich is having to rub against common people. The only way you are going to notice the common man is to be in a crowd with him or her. Clinton open an office in Harlem, Sister Teresa opened her operation in the slums not Piedmont Driving Club.
Nothing wrong with rich people as a group but from where do they think they can govern. Their knowledge of this country is a black and white Jimmy Stewart movie. How can you lead something that you don’t even know the language of and think death is better than learning it? The GOPs attempt to colorize their conventions is a lie. The token speakers are lies. Their indignity of being called out on it is a lie. Romney has a purpose in this world but when he is put into a position he has to lie to make a living it is time he finds his calling somewhere else.

What’s really something, is that people think this speech is actually nothing. The first 5 minutes are actually quite chilling and not for the reason people might first think. Obama talks at length about the story, the miracle of unborn Jennifer Evers, who was struck by a bullet in her mother’s womb during the LA riots of 1992. This is an extraordinary admission from a man who has furthered the funding of abortion more than any other president in American history and who both supporter partial birth abortion and opposed the Illinois Infant Born Alive bill. Obama then goes on at length in comparing America’s problems, line by line, to a child threatened in the womb when he, Barack Obama, more than any other American president has increased the threat to unborn children from abortion through funding and moral support. I cannot support Obama for this reason and for others.

“No sense in me piling on anymore. I suspect you will respond with some more nonsense about goal post moving, parsing of words, and semantics games now that TC exposed you in such devastating fashion.”
I like how Towncrier exposed himself as a liar by leaving out the very next sentence in the post — which invalidated your entire argument and his.
“Save yourself some keystrokes and stand down for a while. There aint no wiggling out of this one Joe mama.”
Oh, son, y’all didn’t give me anything to *have* to wiggle out of. (laughing)
