The new Obama video is ‘devastating’, but not to Obama

In case you missed it, last night we observed a test of the right-wing emergency bombshell system. It was only a test. If this had been an actual right-wing emergency bombshell ….

But it wasn’t.

In the early evening hours yesterday, Sean Hannity, Matt Drudge and Tucker Carlson started promoting what they claimed to be a “devastating” and previously unknown video of Barack Obama that would completely remake the 2012 presidential race. It would be a bombshell, a game-changer, an “October surprise” that would prove Obama to be an anti-white racist, just as they knew all along. It would do to the incumbent what the “47 percent” tape had done to Mitt Romney, if not worse.

And just to build the suspense, the world was told that for maximum impact, the bombshell tape would be released by Hannity and Carlson simultaneously at 9 p.m., Hannity on his Fox News program and Carlson at his Daily Caller site. Over the next few hours, giddy conservatives practiced their victory dance and whipped each other into an anticipatory frenzy over the video that would finally bring down their hated bête noire.

Nine o’clock came, the tape was released and … ppfffffffffft. Nothing. As in, literally nothing.

I don’t know Hannity personally. Never met the man. So I would have a hard time saying with certainty that he’s a racist fool. But after the way he behaved last night, I have no problem saying that he plays a racist fool on television. The same is true of Drudge and Carlson. In their “big reveal” on Fox, Hannity and Carlson tried vainly to pretend the tape was something it clearly is not, and they made themselves and their followers appear ridiculous in the process.

Here’s the reality:

The tape in question came from a 2007 speech by Obama at Hampton University, a historically black college in Virginia. The five-year-old speech had been reported on extensively at the time it was delivered by, among many others, Brit Hume of Fox News and by Carlson himself, on his ill-fated MSNBC show. As Dylan Byers reports at Politico, “The speech was also covered by CNN, NBC News, ABC News, The Associated Press, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Chicago Tribune, and the Chicago Sun-Times, among others.”

In fact, the speech was so well known that Politico had cited a portion of it as No. 3 on its list of the top 10 gaffes of the 2008 political campaign.

In the speech, Obama dared to suggest that race — along with the Bush administration’s “colorblind incompetence” — had played a role in the excruciatingly slow response to New Orleans’ plight in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. He was right; it did. Even if you disagree with that assessment, making such a suggestion is certainly not evidence that Obama hates white people, as Hannity and others now try to claim.

Obama also spoke kindly of his minister at the time, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, thanking him for bringing him to Christ. (The speech occurred before the falling-out between the two men.) He talked about the necessity of addressing poverty in the black community, including the need to “help with basic skills — how to show up to work on time, wear the right clothes, and act appropriately in an office. We have to help them get there.”

None of that is new. None of that is scandalous. Yet last night, Hannity and Carlson did their best to pretend otherwise. They even tried to gin up outrage that in a speech to a black audience, Obama adopted a more “black” way of speaking, which they claim to find deeply disturbing.

Seriously? I no doubt speak slightly differently with my Yankee cousins in Massachusetts than I do with my southern cousins in North Carolina. I speak differently in my professional capacity than when I’m having a beer at the bar or playing golf. We all do it to a degree, subconsciously, as a way of establishing common ground with our audience. At this point, if it is truly a scandal to you that black Americans speak differently when talking “among themselves,” I urge you to get out more often and participate in the 21st century.

In other words, this was not a bombshell, and it is devastating only in the sense that it exposes just how cynically and effectively the right-wing media manipulates its core audience, particularly on matters involving race. As U.S. Rep. Allen West of all people put it afterward, “What’s the ‘So what’ of this video? I don’t think it’s going to really go anywhere.”

Elsewhere, other segments of the right-wing media strained to find ways not to dismiss the video as the nonsense it truly is. On Fox News, transcript available here Greta Van Susteren and Newt Gingrich basically acknowledged that the tape is much ado about nothing, yet somehow pretended to be offended at how the media have covered it. Erick Erickson at Redstate took much the same tack, arguing that the video “is damning not of Barack Obama….The video is damning of the media.”

It is an odd argument. You concede that the video is of little consequence, then blame the media for not hyping it to the skies in the name of balance? Even the folks at Fox News understand the lunacy of that claim. If you read its muted account of the video, it is clearly attempting to put as much distance as possible between itself and this “controversy.”

The biggest tell of all, however, comes from the Romney campaign. It is sorely in need of a bombshell and a game-changer, and as it showed in its overly eager response to the tragedy in Libya, it is ready to pounce on any perceived opportunity. But in this case, it has refused to comment on the tape except to note — no doubt accurately — that it had nothing to do with its over-hyped release.

“What is the news?” Romney communications director Gail Gitcho asked in an email to Buzzfeed. “I don’t know.”

Something tells me that Romney will not be using footage of the Obama speech in his campaign ads. In fact, Romney adviser Kevin Madden made it pretty clear this morning that they want nothing to do with it. When asked whether the video was relevant, he said that “Voters … need to look at that video and make up their minds on that individually. I think what’s more important to this debate right now are the president’s policies are the president’s record over these four years. That is going to be the most important topic on stage tonight.”

The Republican National Committee also declined to comment.

On the other hand, the response among many on the left has been to mock conservatives for being suckered in by the hype from Hannity, Drudge and Carlson, and at one level I get that. But I find this whole thing troubling. It bothers me that a significant number of Americans have allowed their hopes and fears to be manipulated by people such as Hannity, who see them as nothing more than marks to be fleeced. They are being played, and it is not a fun thing to watch.

Trapped within the right-wing echo chamber, they have not only lost touch with their fellow Americans, they have lost a sense of perspective as well. When something like this comes along, they respond to it as instructed and then are dumbfounded to find that the American mainstream sees it entirely differently. They cannot understand how something that makes such a big noise within the echo chamber has almost no resonance outside it, so they explain it away as media bias.

It is not media bias. Why do you think the Romney camp is keeping this whole mess at arm’s length? It’s because they understand that “scandals” ginned up for consumption within the right-wing mediasphere simply do not play well among Americans in general. They are professionals, and they recognize the disconnect that exists between reality as depicted within that echo chamber and the reality as experienced by the rest of the country. If they allow those two worlds to collide, they will lose and they know it.

That disconnect is dangerous. It is dangerous for those on the right who find themselves increasingly alienated and estranged from their fellow Americans, and it is dangerous for the rest of the country as well. It is particularly dangerous for the conservative movement, which has an essential role to play in our nation’s future. But it cannot fulfill that function trapped in a separate world of its own creation.

Jay I largely agree with the general point you are making however, as always you seem to excuse the exact same tactic your side takes when smearing your opposition.

To watch the video and think anything other than it’s Obama speaking as if he is comfortable is a mistake, for the republicans to gin it up is anoher thing all together.

The problem I have with the video is the content of the speech not the manner of speech. It’s more left wing propaganda being repeated for the left wing consumers. The thread in the speech, or one segment of it, is the tried and true method of you need to stay with us becasue you know they are racist.

You should condemn that tatic also. He obviously supports his conclusion, and promotes it, by the fact he conpares the “suburbs” to the “city”. you and I both know thats code talk. The same kind of code talk that you condemn the republicans for engaging in.

with that said, can you tell me where the next all white male meeting is ? you know the ones where we are given the passwords and directed what to think.

What ? you dont know of one ? but you are white arent you ? dont we all get together and plan the demise of the world.

surely there was a meeting that spoke on the subject of hurricanes and our response to hard hit minority areas, as oppose to hard hit white areas–come on Jay you know you have the “white code”, where is it ? in your desk ?

JAY,

Did Romney have anything to do with this release or are you simply using the occasion to submit punches at a news source that outperforms any other on the planet? If Romney is involved, thats another idiotic move..otherwise, it’s just press crap…

Alledging that racism was involved in the tardy and arguable lethal reaction to Katrina is nothing that can be validated…just suggested by those on the left….an inept government is the reason..

Stevie Ray – “The southern dialect is a symptom of doing anything he must do to get votes…”

Agreed. My problem isn’t that the Right is trying to paint a negative portrait of Obama. My problem is the way in which they do it. You don’t release (and I use the term “release” loosely) a video from 5 years ago BEFORE Obama won the election in an attempt to paint a negative picture now. Romneys 47% remarks were CURRENT, it paints a picture of the candidate in real time. The opposition needs to do the same to Obama in order for it to have any effect. Old video, old recordings that pre-date his election are useless. Romney is the wrong candidate for this election. Period. Bringing up ancient talking points in an attempt to sway voters is a usless gesture at this point.

There is a deeper understanding to the “accent” to be had here.

As a black man, I can’t believe I’m even about to comment on this, but there may or may not be some of my white brothers (or brothers of other race) who don’t understand it at all. I say may or may not, because I honestly don’t know.

But consider Barack Obama’s upbringing, his professional status, class status, etc. He (and many other black people) often have difficulty “identifying” with other black people because of how they talk, how they dress, education level, income level, etc. It isn’t one of our prouder traits, but sometimes in the black community if you don’t speak a certain slang, or if you’re not poor/struggling, then you’re not “really black” and therefore don’t identify. I’ll say with a degree of certainty, that for much of President Obama’s life, he suffered from this identity problem.

So, as a presidential candidate, speaking in a room full of black leaders — black PREACHERS no less — he saw an opportunity to connect with his audience, stepped [way] out of his lane, and went for it. So, to those who don’t understand it, it seems disingenuous. But understand what’s happening here, and you’ll be better prepared to comment on it.

Bullspit getting there was a problem.

CNN had no problem getting in. Neither did Harry Connick, Jr., who loaded up a rental truck with supplies and drove it to NOLA himself.

In other words, Drudge, Tucker Carlson, and Sean Hannity formed a strange sort of triumvirate to hype a five-year-old video that everyone already knew about, and which doesn’t include anything interesting anyway. Carlson proudly boasted to Hannity on the air last night, “People will say this has already been reported. Well, actually, it hasn’t been reported. And I know because I reported on it the first time.”

LOL!!! Did I not predict last night that even Jay would rush to effect some kind of damage control over this story. How patently predictable. That is funny.

“I don’t know Hannity personally. Never met the man. So I would have a hard time saying with certainty that he’s a racist fool. But after the way he behaved last night, I have no problem saying that he plays a racist fool on television. The same is true of Drudge and Carlson. In their “big reveal” on Fox, Hannity and Carlson tried vainly to pretend the tape was something it clearly is not, and they made themselves and their followers appear ridiculous in the process.”

Funny, I was thinking white liberals like you, Jay, are “racist fools” (because you almost unwittingly buy into a racist mindset like zombies, for the reason outlined below).

“In the speech, Obama dared to suggest that race — along with the Bush administration’s “colorblind incompetence” — had played a role in the excruciatingly slow response to New Orleans’ plight in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. He was right; it did. Even if you disagree with that assessment, making such a suggestion is certainly not evidence that Obama hates white people, as Hannity and others now try to claim.”

Yet another white liberal who is oblivious to the fact that there is a racist mentality among many blacks in America, and to which Obama was speaking (because he knows it). Doubt it? Let me give you one clear piece of evidence. Tavis Smiley a few years back was interviewing a young black girl who was training to be (as I recall) a boxer in the Olympics. But she was also a straight A student. Tavis asked her did she catch a lot of flack for “being white” (referring to her academic success). She replied yes, she did. So I asked a few of my closer black friends about this – did blacks really see academic success as a racial thing, as “being white”. One of them – a single mom – said “Oh, yeah…I gave up a scholarship to NYU because they were picking on me so bad”. Imagine that…forfeiting a college education at a really good school due to peer pressure. Here’s another example: if you are a white man who has played basketball in the inner cities, you will know that black men think that this is exclusively their game. Indeed, they take a clear racial pride in it. But neither education or sports are a “black” or “white” thing. There is, in the mind of many black Americans, an “us versus them” mentality – a If you don’t know that, you are an ignoramus. Consider the meaning that has been ascribed to FUBU clothing (”For us by us”) – even though it didn’t originally mean that.

Now, what is bothersome about Obama’s speech (and other incidents revealing his ostensible racism) is that he, as a mulatto, and as someone who campaigned as a “unifier”, was probably the best person to close the racial divide in America as president. He is half white and half black. But, instead, we see him pandering to the racist mentality of his black audience. I might be tempted to say, like Jay, that because I don’t personally know the man he might only be playing the “racist fool”. But when I consider the fact that he attended Wright’s church for 20 years and that his wife said in 2008 said “For the first time in my adult life, I am proud of my country”, then I think it can be concluded he has somewhat bought into the racist mentality of which I spoke.

White liberals like Jay are almost self-flagellating and ever so ready to assume guilt and blame for despicable acts of racism probably for which he (like me) was NEVER responsible. In their minds, it seems that ONLY whites can be racist. Bush and his administration was was racist (though GWB was the one who appointed the first black to SoS and considered her one of his top advisers). Right, Jay? (”He was right; it did.“). You are showing yourself to be an ignoramus on this issue, my friend. And, like most good liberals, you deflect and dismiss.

There are people here who have friends, or even family, who talk one way around them and differently when in public. We all do that at some point. You appear to be suggesting that racism is a problem only because minorities *perceive* that they are sometimes being treated in a racist manner. That position argues that racism doesn’t actually exist, and that the only reason it’s discussed is because some people *think* it exists.

Distilled down to its essence, your argument says that racism doesn’t *actually* exist at all.

Intelligent Design: In the creation of the universe, on a garden planet called earth, humankind has risen to the top of the food chain, but is just one of many life forms that were seeded by the Creator. It is just one of the species that is defined as Living Matter. Also it is one of the species of living matter whose immortality, as with all living matter on earth, is derived through the process of its reproduction cycle. The mortal element of humankind’s ability to assimilate knowledge and pass this knowledge on to future generations makes the human species unique above all other species on the planet earth.

In the scheme of the universe, the mortal elements of humankind, who have a short life cycle (as with all living matter on earth); strive for perfection by the process of mutation and evolution through its reproduction cycle. At the end of each elements mortal life cycle (as with all living matter) its life force energy will separates from its physical matter and (is hoped) return to the Creator to be used again in seeding other new gardens on earth and/or in the universe of the Creator.

The cosmetic characteristics of each element of humankind, such as the color of their skin, color or characteristics of their hair or the general physical outward appearance is a product of their geographical location on the planet earth (as with all species hear on earth). It is a product of thousands of generations of that elements family tree evolving (at different physical locations on the planet) and that of their mutation and evolution through their reproduction cycles.

NOTE: These characteristics have nothing to do with the species of humankind’s development or ability or intellect to strive for perfection by the process of mutation and evolution through its reproduction cycle. The characteristics of humankind’s Element of Living Mater fall into two distinct categories:

The Producers (also known as conservatives or entrepreneurs): Those elements of humankind that contribute to it striving for perfection by producing, philosophy, products and technologies that improves humankind’s life cycle (the working class).

The Free Loaders (also known as progressive liberals, socialist or politicians, those that want something and give nothing in return); those elements of humankind that contributes nothing to its improvement and lives off the contributions of the producers

In the year 2012 AD, the politics in a country on the planet earth, called the United States of America is at a crossroads. The election of its president and its congress will determine whether the producers or the free loaders will become the dominant force in its government for the next fifty years.

It should be noted that the spices of humankind greatest weakness are its inability to learn or remember its past’s mistakes from its own history. Depending on which side becomes the dominant force may also determine if the United States of America will still be in existence as a unified country for the next fifty years.

As one observer noted in 2008; he was raised by white people, what else would you expect?

As we are headed for a non-majority racial country we need to start easing off on the racist comments. Soon we will all be minorities.

Are you really that damned stupid, or do you just pretend to be that way to attract friends? You do realize that more Whites are on welfare than Black, right? You also understand that the 47% is made up of more than just Blacks as Blacks only make up about 15% of the total population.

The video was pretty much a dud, who is surprised? Just another politician saying one thing at home and another in Washington. We have seen it many times here, Chambliss, Isakson, Cleland, Nunn, Carter, on and on, say what they think you want to hear and then just totally ignore what they said, when push comes to shove. Obama probably leads the field in talking out of both sides of his mouth, but he is not the first or the last.

We keep reelecting these folks, so I guess it is learned behavior. Never underestimate the intelligence of the American voter.

Republicans amuse me:

In a 2008 speech from the House floor, Missouri Senate candidate seemed to suggest that doctors frequently perform abortions on women who aren’t pregnant.

“You find that along with the culture of death go all kinds of other law-breaking: not following good sanitary procedure, giving abortions to women who are not actually pregnant, cheating on taxes, all these kinds of things, misuse of anesthetics so that people die or almost die,” Akin said, according to a CSPAN video highlighted by Slate. “All of these things are common practice, and all of that information is available for America.”

JOE,

That’s not remotely what I’m suggesting. My point is that I can’t conceive what we would look like if racism didn’t exist. It certainly exists (and on more levels than I can possibly understand) but too often suggested without merit. Seems to me the only way it can be eliminated as a discussion point is if the demographics were more balanced relative to current…

It certainly doesn’t help when you get pundits suggesting that the term racism should be replaced with slavery as I’ve heard in many circles…the political objective is to paint all conservatives as rich, self serving, racists who want to screw the middle class and below.

Do you realize the GOP proposed to BO prior to inauguration I think, that the lower two tax brackets should be reduced and tax on unemployment be eliminated? BO played political and said the now famous, we won….get over it comment. If anyone was going to get credit for these ideas, it wasnt’ going to be the enemy..

His supporters have long abandoned values, morals, reason, common sense, natural law, the authority of God in order to keep their tarnished “hero” shining in their own eyes. Really? You can prove the government’s ineptitude and response to Katrina was due to race and “colorblind incompetence”? That is your opinion and not a fact. If it were a fact you would back it up with tangible proof. You cannot. The irony of this entire column is that you yourself are fanning the flames of racial animosity with statements like that while accusing Hannity, Carlson of doing the same. “Seems to me the only way it can be eliminated as a discussion point is if the demographics were more balanced relative to current”

I lived in Hawaii for four years, and that’s the MOST racially diverse state in the Union. IIRC, it’s the only one where Caucasians represent less than 50% of the population. And you know what? There’s racism out there, too. I don’t believe for a moment that racist feelings, impulses and actions would disappear if the racial demographic distribution were more equal — prejudice is, IMO, independent of demographics.

That’s what a shameless hack does, but Jay’s in wide company among the corrupt msm. “In the speech, Obama dared to suggest that race — along with the Bush administration’s “colorblind incompetence” — had played a role in the excruciatingly slow response to New Orleans’ plight in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. He was right; it did”

Proof? None. This is a completely asinine statement of “fact”, refuted by statistics of the 1800+ people who perished in Katrina.

Whites represented a greater percentage of fatalities from Katrina than they did of the general population of the areas hit, including New Orleans. Slightly ‘underreported’ fact due to the fact that you get no news play out of saying whites died at a higher rate. Nothing cynical/conspiratorial can be found in that, right? (perhaps incompetence, but some of them died simply because they did not heed a warning to leave, while others died because they had no means by which to leave-$$$)

Please stick to facts, I realize they are inconvenient, but they make for a more truthful debate on a subject.
