Obama vs. Romney, head to head in Denver

————————

9:03: And … they’re off, from the Magnus Arena in Denver. May the best candidate win.

9:15: Obama’s off-base on the claim that Romney proposes another $5 trillion in tax cuts. Romney’s right — with deductions reduced, the tax cut would not be anywhere near that large. Of course, Romney hasn’t explained WHICH deductions, and the deductions in play could not eliminate all or close to all of that $5 trillion …

9:22: Romney doing well, I think. Obama on the defensive.

9:31: Obama brings up Romney’s position in the primary that he would not accept $10 in budget cuts for $1 in revenue increases. A telling point.

9:34: Romney again rules out revenue increases absolutely. That makes progress against the deficit and the debt impossible. It makes the scale of cuts in Medicare and Medicaid and other programs, including defense, impossible to sustain. But Obama is not making that argument well.

9:48: Romney put more time into preparation, and it shows. Obama is missing opportunities.

9:51: Romney endorses the need for regulation. He is making the transition from primary to general election that he had not previously made.

9:57: Romney hints at the “death panel” argument, then lauds his own state version of ObamaCare.

10:04: Obama continues to leave opportunities on the table.

10:09: Romney beating on the “death panel” angle. All Obama needs to say is: “Governor, the plan that you implemented in Massachusetts has an identical panel that does the exact same thing.” But he does not.

10:18: Again, Romney better prepared and Obama is oddly passive, failing to strike at his opponent’s vulnerabilities. A strong night for the former governor of Massachusetts. A weak performance by the incumbent.

————————

With Barack Obama holding a sturdy if somewhat narrow lead of three to four points in the polls, and a broader lead in most electoral college projections, he and Republican challenger Mitt Romney meet tonight in Denver for the first of three presidential debates.

Typically, these events have the air of a Vegas prize fight. But having covered a few of those fights, I can tell you that there’s one big difference. In boxing, both camps boast endlessly beforehand about the whupping that their guy is going to put on the unlucky sap across the ring. Political handlers play just the opposite game, trying to underplay their man’s chances.

In recent days, it’s also been interesting to see Romney start to add some details to a previous vacuum of specifics, revealing that as president he would honor the two-year waiver granted to illegal immigrants brought here as children, and that he would limit more affluent taxpayers to $17,000 in deductions to at least partially offset his proposed 20 percent reduction in tax rates. I suspect that debate preparations convinced his camp that going into tonight without such details would have left him too exposed.

So stay tuned.

“Romney’s statement that he would not reduce the defense budget does not make sense. We spend more that the next eleven nations combined. We can’t afford the defense budget we have now, much less adding to it”

Oscar,

I agree with you on this. I don’t see how we are going to make serious dents in the deficit without cutting into defense. My theory is that Romney is playing possum on the defense issue and will realize if he gets in that we cannot get to a balanced budget without cutting some serious stuff in defense.

But I do disagree with you on education spending. We are spending more per pupil on an inflation adjusted basis then we ever have- and getting poorer results. The problem is not money related.

Additionally ever since the govt got in the business of subsidizing college costs have escalated. If you study the economics of higher education you will see that the more the govt subsidizes higher education the more expensive it gets. 600 colleges and universities now have rock climbing walls. The subsidizing of education is in effect not going into a better product but into more amenities as colleges compete for students. Quit subsidizing it and the costs will fall. Last on that subject the student loan fiasco is the next great bubble with roughly a trillion in student loan debt owed.

The economist,

And please tell me again how a top down centralized approach and govt printing press is going to work? It not only hasn’t worked the last 4 years but real incomes have been reduced almost 10% because of the money printing press. And the debt has run up 5 trillion. And btw under W the economy grew along with low unemployment until the housing bubble burst. And the speculative housing bubble is a separate issue altogether and is not something that started under W. Go do some research on it and you will see that it was a phenomenon that goes way back and has plenty of blame to go around.

“The great thing about Biden is that he is a screaming, glaring crack in the imperious facade that is the Obama administration–that neither the media nor Obama himself seem to take notice of.”

His debate is going to hurt Obama’s chances a little. And neither of these candidates can afford to be hurt even a little. If the ME blows up, the Libyan attack on the consulate turns out to be something of a cover-up, the new F&F Univision story gains wings or Spain goes under in the next few weeks, then it is probably all over for Obama (unless Romney screws up very badly).

And, as I have suggested, the polls may have been intentionally skewed the past month or so but cannot afford to be much longer (to maintain credibility). See this article for some interesting thoughts on this:

Romney, I believe, does understand the economy enough to “fix it”; however, despite his effort at building a broad tent tonight (economicly speaking) everything Romney said during the GOP primary indicates he would “fix” the rat race for the ongoing benefit of the wealthiest among us to the substantial detriment of the employee class. Some stink you cannot wash off.

Agreed, TD. But there is plenty of fat to cut out of the military complex – PLENTY – and still keep it strong. Defense contractors RAPE the government many times and that has to stop.

Romney said “Number two, young people are able to stay on their family plan. That’s already offered in the private marketplace. You don’t have to have the government mandate that for that to occur.”

Atl mom,

Now I see what you are saying. Still doesn’t make much sense to me though. What’s to stop a child from going out and getting his or her own individual insurance policy which is darn cheap for a 25 year old? And in the past I know that students up to 22 years old were covered under their parent’s plan as long as they were full time students. At least that’s the way it was when I was in college. And when you’re 25 or 26 usually you are working full time. And there are lots of people getting masters degrees while working full time which I thought was kinda normal. Those people would be covered by the group plans where they work. I mean at what point does a 20 something become an adult and responsible for their own bills like health insurance which is dirt cheap for a 20 something anyway.

Atlanta mom,

That’s great that you want pre-existing covered. But you better understand that there is a cost for it. And that the law of unintended consequences is at work. I’m an insurance agent and have written lots of individual health insurance policies in the past though I specialize now in Medicare plans and am branching more into the financial side- going back to get my series 7. But I digress. The thing is that what a lot of people don’t know is that 5 states- Ny, Nj, Vermont, Mass, and 1 other have had mandatory coverage for pre-existing conditions for quite a while now. And guess what? Overall premiums for those states is if I remember correctly 200-300% higher and are community rating oriented. I can look up some sample quotes for those states when I get back on Friday- today I’m out of town. And the thing about is that the younger folks starting out pay inflated premiums while the seniors pay lower premiums because of the younger workers. So the reality is that for the young people that you speak of rates are going to be substantially higher when Aca kicksin in 2014. The previous examples of the other 5 states proves what will inevitably happen. So if rates are going to go up for young people how many are going to be able to afford it in 2014 when they can’t afford it now at the substantially lower rates of today? This was not very carefully thought through and most people don’t know that we already have evidence of what it will do to premiums. If you or others think rates are going to be cheaper then I’m here to let you know that the empirical evidence says you got sold a bill of goods.

n GA I see Obama commercials everyday.

_____________

I never see any. What channels do you watch? Wait, I watch mostly movies where they don’t have commericals. That could explain it.

That was a joke. Just trying to be funny. You never heard anyone say “They look all the same to me.” Blacks say it about whites as well. All races have problems with other races in identifying individuals. Studies have verified that.

Train wreck,

I’ll point our your invective to Mr. Bookman tomorrow. You’re repulsive, and if you want to come back here, you need a new name, a new email and most of all, a new attitude.

Just get out. You have no place debating, because what you are doing is pure personal, racist, hateful insults.

Just quit.

Atl mom,

One other thing that I forgot to mention. I told everyone a year ago that what is going to happen is rates are going to rise to about 20k for a family of 4 per year for an employer and that a lot of employers will simply drop their group coverage. Its already started to happen. Yesterday Sears and a large restaurant parent company dropped group health coverage and instead will just give a monthly amount to employees to go get their own coverage. The result which we are already starting to see is that many adults are going to lose their group coverage. Another unintended consequence of the law.

Last one of my good friends asked me to write a policy a few days ago for him and his 2 daughters, He has to provide insurnance for them as part of his divorce decree. But he already has coverage through the VA. But because of ACA the health insurnace companies quit selling child only policies so now he cannot get coverage for his 2 kids due to this unintended consequence. So his only option is to get coverage for himself and include his kids even though he already has coverage. The problem with that is that he has diabetes and is an automatic decline. He won’t be covered till 2014. And the reason they scheduled it for 2014 is because they wanted the sticker shock to hit Americans AFTER the 2012 elections. I hope you will consider all these unintended consequences when you reconsider your enthusiasm for ACA.
