Do debates and analysis alter viewpoint? Research says yes

In 2004, political science researchers at Arizona State University assembled three groups of people. One group watched that year’s third presidential debate between John Kerry and George W. Bush. A second group watched the debate plus 20 minutes of analysis on NBC. The third group watched the debate and were then given 20 minutes of access to written “instant analysis” posted on CNN.com.

Then they were asked the same obvious question: Who won? The results, via a graph by Kevin Drum, in turn borrowed from John Sides:

blog_debates_who_won_media_0

Those who watched the NBC analysis, which in the researchers’ opinion had been more favorable to Bush, were more than twice as likely to say that Bush had won compared to those who watched the debate without exposure to outside analysis. The contrast with those who read CNN’s analysis — judged more favorable to Kerry by researchers — was even more stark. Only 19 percent in that group felt that Bush had won, although overall, those who had read CNN coverage were most likely to say that neither man had won.

Researchers also took a look at whether partisan differences played any role. Democrats, they found, were much more open to changing their minds about the candidates based on what they had seen in the debates and subsequent analysis, while Republicans showed no such willingness to alter their perspective.

They concluded:

“In this case, Republicans are much less willing to be swayed by political information, compared with Democrats. Why are Republicans less receptive to the debate messages? It may be Republicans had more stable and strongly held attitudes about their nominee for the simple reason that their nominee was the incumbent president. Or, it may be the case that Republicans were less receptive to media messages because they are more suspicious of the “liberal bias” of the press.  Or, maybe Democrats held ambivalent feelings about Senator Kerry because they had less information about him, making their attitudes about Senator Kerry more responsive to external stimuli.  Whatever the mechanism, these results suggest that people’s party affiliation clearly affected their reaction to the messages emanating from the debate and subsequent news coverage.”

Keep all that in mind tonight, when we’ll be live-blogging the debate right here. I’ll put a debate post up around 8 p.m., with the debate scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. All major networks will provide coverage, and Jim Lehrer of PBS’ NewsHour will moderate.

Good graphs show amazing results. It looks like most people need to hear “what did they really say?” analysis to help their opnion.

Not sure how much I agree with it, but looks intriguing.

How big was the sample size and were similar demographics represented?

I don’t think corporate media has any credibility left from the American people.

But also, the more important question.

After saying who “won” the debate, how many people actually would consider changing their vote? (and did?)

Sure, analysis can help say who won a debate, but heck, the winner of a debate may show off better, have better “zingers”, or just come across with better with more sleep.

I’ve quit watching debates because answers usually form the “I’ll ignore the question and say what I want to anyway” meme.

from http://sitemason.vanderbilt.edu/files/jUY0rm/Fridkin.pdf

One-hundred-forty-five subjects were recruited

There were no
statistically significant differences among the six groups in terms of political interest, attention
to the news, or demographic characteristics

and evidently only a portion of those made it into the graph above.

25 in the first group, 25 in the second group and 24 in the third group.

thus, the results, though intriguing, have a large amount of error built in due to the small sample sizes.

And the article does say that there is a “statistical signfiicance” to the results at the very very bottom, so I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt.

But I’m still a little wary of a group of 74 and basing results off of what could be just a couple of impressionable people rather than a larger sample size that would give me better confidence in the results.

Alas, they were inhibited by cost of getting “general population” subjects rather than just “university” subjects for the research. It also would be nice to see if a duplicate study has been done on subsequent debates.

Would you agree that the most important variable in the outcome of this race is voter turnout? Since this can’t be projected by all these polls (at least Rasmussen doesn’t assume same 2008 turnout for BO but a more conservative blend of 2000, 2004 and 2008) we will learn a lot about what having 80 some odd polls really means in due time..

Of course, while not supported by many, it seems to me that these polls will be a battle cry for the righties to get out and vote in number that vastly exceeds 2008 rightie turnout…

I don’t believe you do. I base that in part on your claim that “Unless ALL THREE groups were asked who won immediately after the debate and THEN asked again after they watched the analysis you have no accurate data to compare.” Because that’s clearly untrue.

The group that saw or read no analysis serves as the control group, the group whose opinions were untainted by post-debate analysis and thus could provide “accurate data to compare” the other two groups.

And there you have it – from a single “study” and without any discussion of who the “researchers” were and what methodology they used – we have a sweeping generalization to “keep in mind” for tonight’s “debate” (really nothing more than a Q&A session). The only thing I will keep in mind is to hit the “mute” button once the debate has ended – no matter what channel I watch it on.

In my case, their conclusions would apply because I am a social conservative and could never vote for Obama (I would not vote if his opponent was a social liberal).

It will be interesting to see what is discussed and how it is handled. I expect to see BOTH Obama and Romney squirm and fudge quite a bit. Neither of them are top shelf candidates, in my opinion.

State and local government hiring sustain national picture

Gallup’s Job Creation Index score of +21 among nongovernment workers is down from +23 in August and a high of +25 in April. At the same time, the job creation climate within state and local government became even more positive, helping to sustain U.S. job creation nationally.

Brocephus,

Stuff made up off the top of my head? Really? Some common sense also has to come into play. Republicans as many liberals on here have stated are lilly white while Dems have 90% of the black vote and roughly 2/3rds of the Hispanic vote. Its no secret that according to the census bureau that whites generally have higher incomes and educational attainment then these 2 groups that make up a good portion of the Democratic party. Not sure of the numbers but I think blacks and whites make something like only 70 or 80% of whites incomes. So when you factor that in then it would be hard to figure out how it would be mathmatically possible for the average Democrat to have as much income or educational attainment as the average Republican. I thought you had a degree in math so it seems like this would be easy to figure out just off the top of your head besides all the surveys and other demographic info that’s out there.

Book sense does not automatically confer common sense. I have met shade tree mechanics with a high school education that was more knowledgable than PhD holders. When you stated that money and education makes one more knowledgable, you stated BS as one doesn’t automatically equal the other, and you won’t be able to find any stats, research, or anything factual to prove that.

A lawyer might know how to cite law but not be able to change a spark plug in his car. You have surgeons who probably don’t know how to put a bookcase together.

Go back and look at my posting sir. The only jabs I’ve thrown on this thread have been in response to people throwing a jab at me first. And while my comment ticked some people off for some reason I’ve yet to see anyone conclusively refute it. Some haven’t even tried refuting it. They just snipe with some silliness that doesn’t have anything to do with anything except trying to take a dig. If they can’t make a point they just come up with some silly insult. Same as it ever was.

Now I was hard on Joe Mama in the previous thread because he got nailed hard by someone else and was proven to be dishonest and at that point he just went into his tap dancing and semantics games. But I didn’t call him names. I just pointed out his dishonesty and his poor attempts to BS his way out of it.

I understand. And good for you being sensitive. I like and respect josef. And as I have said many times, I have NO ill feeling towards homosexuals as persons. But I am against them being married and raising children. I understand full well that most gays have not “chosen” to be so but were likely “imprinted” that way in early childhood (as one theory goes). That is not their fault and they should not be blamed for it. Yet I also know as a matter of fact that some have truly been able to overcome this imprinting and lead normal heterosexual lives. But it is far from easy for most of them. We ALL have things to overcome in life (my cousin died of bulimia and I was sexually abused as a child) and homosexuality is not different in that regard. Life is simply not fair or easy for most of us.

It’s official…………………….Obamam CAN kidnap anyone—————–
.
Last month, a judge by name of Katherine Forrest, who clearly didn’t read the memo on the judiciary’s role, actually ruled that Obummer couldn’t denounce somebody as a terrorist, throw him in the pokey, and call it a day, as the NDAA permits. She delivered a blistering opinion, in fact, in which she discussed such old-fashioned, irrelevant concepts as the Constitution, habeas corpus, legislation left deliberately vague to confuse and imprison serfs, freedom (ha!) of speech and assembly, etc.

Obummer, the guy who so disagrees with the NDAA that he claimed to have “serious reservations” when signing it and promised never to use its power, vowed to appeal crazy Kate’s decision within mere hours. I know, I know: unseemly eagerness rather than the reluctance earlier professed. Well, were I a cynic, I’d say Obummer lies as often as he breathes. At any rate, another gowned clown has now come to the Feds’ defense and declared Kate wrong: Obummer may indeed jail anyone anywhere in the world for any or no reason whatever. (Hey, he already murders whomever he chooses: What’s a little kidnapping and imprisonment after that?) And now the other two clowns from that circus—sorry, bench—have solemnly agreed with Clown #1 that yes, it’s perfectly fine for Our Rulers to incarcerate anyone, anywhere without trial or evidence, a millennium of Anglo-American jurisprudential tradition to the contrary be damned.

The clear difference here, JHM, is that I am not getting paid to write and my livelihood does not depend on how well I frame my arguments (in a small HTML textarea) on this blog. I make stabs at arguments (as do you and Brosephus and some others), but let’s be clear: no one is posting any dissertations here. Indeed, though a couple of my degrees should warrant otherwise, I usually make little or no effort to edit what I (as a very poor typist) what I have written before I click on the Submit button. Hence all of my typos. Posting on blogs is like playing an instrument in a closet. It is hard to “stretch your legs” in such a format.

Given all the examples from nature regarding gender within species, that’s a pretty remarkable opinion, seeing as how there are many, many examples from other life forms that contract it. There are even examples of sex changes occurring in mature life forms.

To open early voting in Ohio on Tuesday evening, Michelle Obama rallied a raucous crowd of nearly 7,000 people in Cincinnati at the Duke Energy Convention Center.

In response, the Romney campaign held its own event in Cincinnati:

Republicans countered Michelle Obama’s visit with a Commit to Mitt event Tuesday encouraging Romney supporters to vote early, as well. The Commit to Mitt bus tour will cross the state “emphasizing how the Romney-Ryan plan for the middle class will result in lower taxes, less government spending, more economic growth and a stronger middle class with 12 million new jobs,” Romney spokesman Christopher Maloney said.

And how many attended?

An early voting event for the former Massachusetts governor on Tuesday in downtown Cincinnati drew roughly 45 supporters.

I am fully aware of homosexual activity among other animal life. But that activity, AFAIK, has never been shown to be lasting throughout an animal’s lifetime. I have had dogs try to hump my leg from time to time. Animals act on impulse or instinct using little (compared to humans) reasoning. It is not surprising that they would therefore engage in homosexual acts.

If you, on the other hand, are postulating a genetic cause for homosexuality, I would ask 1) what proof do you have and 2) what are the implications of that postulate for other forms of potentially objectionable behavior (such as pedophilia, alcoholism, kleptomania and so on)?

“So, are you open to revising your opinion based upon analysis, or are you a Republican?”

Hate to break your liberal bubble but Abraham Lincoln ran for president and won as a Republican. So did Teddy Roosevelt. And when Susan B. Anthony was arrested on 18 Nov 1872 for voting in an election, she stated, ” I voted a straight Republican ticket….. for all of them”.

“Joe wants some research from you after your research from 11:47 this morning. Now THAT is funny.”

Well, TD, in fairness he was referring to this debate we had months ago about Vietnam protesters spitting on returning veterans. I provide him with ostensible evidence to counter his contention that such a claim cannot be factually made since there is no (what he called “documented”) evidence of it happening (he was unwilling to accept the personal testimony of certain veterans though that kind of evidence is admissible in court). The evidence with which I supplied him was compiled and summarized by a law professor of some standing, but without citing the name and date of the published articles. He apprised me of this difficulty and I challenged him to research it. He had little success doing so (for logistical and technological reasons) and last I knew I suggested that he contact the good professor to ask for bibliographic information. I have not heard back since from JHM on this issue. So it was NOT a trivial piece of research such as I did today.

Brocephus,

With all due respect I disagree with your comments to kayaker. He has as much right to bring up the death of a border patrol agent as liberals did bringing up the deaths of U.S. serviceman in Iraq when we went to war there. There is no difference.

And you couldn’t be more wrong in him or anyone else wanting to know why we are not securing the border or protecting our agents. Or wanting to know why agent Terry was murdered 2 years ago by guns that the Obama administration was selling to Mexican criminal drug gangs. The worst and last thing we should do is be silent in the wake of our people getting killed on the border.

How did I miss this Jay lol? Yet on further investigation I was proved CORRECT.

As far as I can see from all you asshats here with your degrees and advanced degrees and whatnot, all TAHT means is that you are too stupid to EVER admit you made a mistake.

Protesters At Bain-Owned Company Block Moving Vans To Keep Jobs and Equipment In U.S.

On October 2, employees blocked the driveways and loading dock at Sensata Technologies to prevent trucks from carting plant equipment away. “All of us here believe that the equipment should not be moved out, that the jobs need to stay here,” said supporter Debbie Kempel when interviewed by WTVO, Rockford, IL.

This is the latest in a series of actions by Sensata workers in Freeport, IL since hearing about Sensata’s plans to outsource 200 jobs to China by the end of this year. On September 12, protesters set up tents across the street from the plant, and named their encampment Bainport, Illinois. Sensata workers have also set up a petition for supporters to sign, and taken their activism on the road with the Bain Workers Bus Tour, a coalition of progressives and workers from companies owned by Bain Capital.

Brocephus, 6:06,

I respect your opinion as well, but what are we supposed to do?…. just ignore it?

Did I ask you to ignore it? No, I did not. All I ask is that you leave the politics out of it. Do you know exactly what happened? Do you know exactly what caused it? If so, why not tell our investigators the entire story and save us a few tax dollars.

It pisses me off to high hell each and every time any of y’all so-called conservatives decides to whip BPA Terry’s name around for the sake of beating the political drums, so I am just simply asking for you to stop doing that.

If you want to bring attention to what’s going on along the Southern Border, why not also bring some solutions instead of just using somebody’s death to blame Obama?

http://www.azcentral.com/news/20121002border-agents-slain-since-2006-names.html?sf6391038=1

Since 2006, 20 U.S. Border Patrol agents have died in the line of duty, including eight from Arizona. Three of the eight Arizona agents were slain, with two being shot and another intentionally struck with a vehicle by a suspected smuggler who was trying to flee, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Nine Agents have died in the line of duty since Obama took office. Agent Ivie was the 5th since Terry died. Where’s your concern for the other four, or is your concern only relevent when it’s political expedient for you to push your rhetoric? This is the 3rd time this year we’ve placed mourning bands on our badges, and for me, that’s 3 times too many.

Were you aware that most of those guys are out patroling in teams of two? If you want to beat a political drum, why not bang the drums about getting more Agents on the border instead of worrying about Obama? Why not beat the drum of getting those guys and girls better armed and better equipped?

Doom: He has as much right to bring up the death of a border patrol agent as liberals did bringing up the deaths of U.S. serviceman in Iraq when we went to war there.

Care to point where I asked him not to bring it up??? I did no such thing. I simply asked that he not make it some political talking point. As I recall, when those liberals did as you said, they were damn near accused of everything to the point of treason. I recall people being called unAmerican and everything else.

Seems that, if Conservatives were that protective of the military, they wouldn’t turn around and sh*t on Border Patrol Agents who risk their lives every day to protect your and my ass. You said earlier that Conservatives were generally more knowledgable, right? Why not show some of that knowledge and not do the same damn thing you castigated somebody else for doing less than 10 years ago? Is that not too much to ask? Damn, somebody’s gotta be the grown up.

No, the worst thing we should be doing is passing off lies as though they are the truth. Those guns that were involved with the death of Agent Terry were sold three days before ATF got their serial numbers from the paperwork from the dealer. So, how in the hell does that equate to Obama giving guns to Mexican cartels?

As I told kayaker, if you want to make political hay, then make it about the working conditions of those guys. WHy are they patrolling in teams of 2? Do you know how long the border is? Why don’t we have enough agents to secure the border instead of trying to plug a leaking dam with our fingers?

I have no problem with people wondering why the border is not secure. Starting off with false assumptions and outright lies will not aid your case. Why not go and actually read the truth instead of what you hear from the echo chamber, or is it just much easier to believe what you want to believe in order to simply validate YOUR opinions?
