In 2004, political science researchers at Arizona State University assembled three groups of people. One group watched that year’s third presidential debate between John Kerry and George W. Bush. A second group watched the debate plus 20 minutes of analysis on NBC. The third group watched the debate and were then given 20 minutes of access to written “instant analysis” posted on CNN.com.
Then they were asked the same obvious question: Who won? The results, via a graph by Kevin Drum, in turn borrowed from John Sides:

Those who watched the NBC analysis, which in the researchers’ opinion had been more favorable to Bush, were more than twice as likely to say that Bush had won compared to those who watched the debate without exposure to outside analysis. The contrast with those who read CNN’s analysis — judged more favorable to Kerry by researchers — was even more stark. Only 19 percent in that group felt that Bush had won, although overall, those who had read CNN coverage were most likely to say that neither man had won.
Researchers also took a look at whether partisan differences played any role. Democrats, they found, were much more open to changing their minds about the candidates based on what they had seen in the debates and subsequent analysis, while Republicans showed no such willingness to alter their perspective.
“In this case, Republicans are much less willing to be swayed by political information, compared with Democrats. Why are Republicans less receptive to the debate messages? It may be Republicans had more stable and strongly held attitudes about their nominee for the simple reason that their nominee was the incumbent president. Or, it may be the case that Republicans were less receptive to media messages because they are more suspicious of the “liberal bias” of the press. Or, maybe Democrats held ambivalent feelings about Senator Kerry because they had less information about him, making their attitudes about Senator Kerry more responsive to external stimuli. Whatever the mechanism, these results suggest that people’s party affiliation clearly affected their reaction to the messages emanating from the debate and subsequent news coverage.”
Keep all that in mind tonight, when we’ll be live-blogging the debate right here. I’ll put a debate post up around 8 p.m., with the debate scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. All major networks will provide coverage, and Jim Lehrer of PBS’ NewsHour will moderate.

“That’s just an exit poll”
I love that. As if there’s some method of determining how people of various demographic groups actually vote that’s more accurate than actually asking individuals leaving the voting booth how they voted. As if Thulsa’s method of “why, everybody knows X” is truly the more accurate method.

Brocephus,
Stuff made up off the top of my head? Really? Some common sense also has to come into play. Republicans as many liberals on here have stated are lilly white while Dems have 90% of the black vote and roughly 2/3rds of the Hispanic vote. Its no secret that according to the census bureau that whites generally have higher incomes and educational attainment then these 2 groups that make up a good portion of the Democratic party. Not sure of the numbers but I think blacks and whites make something like only 70 or 80% of whites incomes. So when you factor that in then it would be hard to figure out how it would be mathmatically possible for the average Democrat to have as much income or educational attainment as the average Republican. I thought you had a degree in math so it seems like this would be easy to figure out just off the top of your head besides all the surveys and other demographic info that’s out there.

Book sense does not automatically confer common sense. I have met shade tree mechanics with a high school education that was more knowledgable than PhD holders. When you stated that money and education makes one more knowledgable, you stated BS as one doesn’t automatically equal the other, and you won’t be able to find any stats, research, or anything factual to prove that.
A lawyer might know how to cite law but not be able to change a spark plug in his car. You have surgeons who probably don’t know how to put a bookcase together.

Really, Fred? So, you have a degree in social research to back up the claim that the methodology is useless?
I don’t believe you do. I base that in part on your claim that “Unless ALL THREE groups were asked who won immediately after the debate and THEN asked again after they watched the analysis you have no accurate data to compare.” Because that’s clearly untrue.
The group that saw or read no analysis serves as the control group, the group whose opinions were untainted by post-debate analysis and thus could provide “accurate data to compare” the other two groups.
+++++++++++++++++
Well I have been a successful businessman for 25 years and I don’t have a business degree. I was a successful journalist and I didn’t have a journalism degree. Some of YOU need to be forcefed information, some of US learn on our own. As to polling? I’ve studied it. On my own of course, not having some asshat force feed me info that I regurgitate back on a test………….
There were actually 6 groups. Did you read all 46 pages of the document you linked? Why did you leave three of them off?
But I will say after reading the experiment parameters I feel “better” about the results. However, they forced folks into one of two “controls.” Either you were a democrat or a Republican. That isn’t correct. The break down of the voting public is NOT 50-50 Dem-Reb.
If you reference page 44 of the document linked you find n=56 for Democrats and n=53 for Republicans but nowhere do you see n=a damn thing for independents or non decided.

“crier…. given today’s electronics in motor and cars, most mechanics have to have a number of certifications and specialized training…How is your elitism working for you? Looking down on others makes you “better” right?”
Umm…I was poking fun at you and NOT mechanics there, son.

they both suck,
Go back and look at my posting sir. The only jabs I’ve thrown on this thread have been in response to people throwing a jab at me first. And while my comment ticked some people off for some reason I’ve yet to see anyone conclusively refute it. Some haven’t even tried refuting it. They just snipe with some silliness that doesn’t have anything to do with anything except trying to take a dig. If they can’t make a point they just come up with some silly insult. Same as it ever was.
Now I was hard on Joe Mama in the previous thread because he got nailed hard by someone else and was proven to be dishonest and at that point he just went into his tap dancing and semantics games. But I didn’t call him names. I just pointed out his dishonesty and his poor attempts to BS his way out of it.
Keep Up the Good Fight! (and only seeing conned poutrage)

“Come now, Doom. I was under the impression that you *preferred* your azz to be smart.”
Well…don’t most Democrats think they are smart asses? They can talk, leastways

Brazil plays Argentina in soccer, tonight, so I might miss part of the debate. In that case I’ll tune in John Stewart tomorrow night, as his viewers score the highest on current events tests.
I’m thinking of a drinking game tied to zingers. A zinger that hits the target is worth one shot. A zinger that misses is two shots. If Mitt throws a zinger, and it boomerangs and hits him, it is worth three shots. That should set me up for the soccer game that starts later.

Like when George “bang the liberal drum” Stephanopolous says Dems won 9 out of last 10 debates. Another pathetic MSM lackey…
