Are Mitt’s money men putting away the checkbooks?

From Fox Business News:

The Romney campaign is experiencing what some officials believe could be the beginning of a mass exodus of big money donors diverting their cash away from the Republican presidential hopeful and toward Republican candidates for the House and Senate races more likely to win in November, the FOX Business Network has learned.

The trend isn’t at the acute stage, at least not yet, said one person with direct knowledge of the matter. This person, a major player in Romney’s New York fundraising circles, confirmed to FOX Business that a few New York donors have backed away from financial commitments to the Romney campaign and instead said they will spend their money to help the Republicans hold on to the House of Representatives, and pick up seats in the Senate.

But another person with direct knowledge of the matter says the trend, though nascent, is more geographically broad based, and reflects an increasing degree of anxiety both with what they believe is the tentative nature of the Romney campaign, and recent poll numbers that show President Obama with a lead, particularly in key battleground states, that some Republican contributors are starting to believe is insurmountable.

“This isn’t just a New York trend,” this person said. “It’s beginning to occur all over the place.”

If Romney does well in tomorrow night’s debate, that trend may be stopped dead in its tracks. On the other hand, if he achieves a draw or less, the disenchantment is likely to deepen, with important consequences for fundraising efforts.

A mediocre performance in Denver would also inspire another, more aggressive round of anti-Romney sniping and backstabbing from conservative media and politicians, which has the potential to do a lot more damage to the Romney cause than a withdrawal of financial support. I’ve already been struck by the fact that many conservative pundits and media figures have been even more dismissive of Romney’s chances than have their counterparts on the left. Given the right opening, they seem quite ready to bury him and move on.

“You sure were having a little fun a couple weeks ago when the MJ tape came out. I guess this one hurts a little by reading the remarks.”

Ummm… no. I mean it sincerely when I say that mostly I just feel sorry for those who have been taken in by such nonsense, who have allowed their hopes to be manipulated like this. I understand that you very badly WANT this five-year-old video that was reported on in 2008 to become the magic counterpart to Romney’s 47 percent video.

But wanting doesn’t make it so.

The rest of America is going to look at this video and shake its head at what the right wing has come to think of as relevant. And when this video fails to shake up the race as you believe it must, you will attribute that failure to the media conspiracy against you. That conspiracy theory allows you to evade the real truth, which is that you have been sold a bill of goods by those eager to make a buck off you.

George Will had it right when he said, “Conservatives define themselves in terms of what they oppose” and that includes everything the POTUS has proposed since 2010.

I’m very concern about the future as many of those who rode the Tea Party to vicotry ran on the promise not to give an inch, not to compromise with the Dems and to sign the Norquist Pledge. Unless the POTUS just completely capitulates on every GOTP proposal, we’ll see gridlock and that could send the economy into a double dip recession — and it’s all uncalled for if these yahoos would put the country ahead of their political aspirations.

What did I tell you? Liberals either 1) deflect or 2) dismiss when they have been nailed. It is an inbred defense mechanism. Thanks, Jay, for the additional proof.

You must be tone deaf or dumb, Jay, to imagine there is NOT a racist tinge in some of the things Obama says. He is a racist, plain and simple – but “white” liberals like yourself are eager to dismiss that in another attempt at self-flagellation and atonement for guilt you feel you must own (even though, like me, you probably had NOTHING to do with despicable acts of white racists decades ago). If you had ever bothered to really mix it up with our black fellow Americans – you know, like going into inner cities to help in a charitable cause or by actually getting to know them through friendships and deep discussions about race and stuff like that – you would know that blacks can be and often are as racist as any white person. Indeed, racism knows no racial boundaries – I have known some Hispanics who dislike blacks and Asians.

I have never seen this tape before (even the snippets that were previously released). I am betting I am not the only one. I guess you better hope otherwise. It’s now on Fox so there is going to be DNC damage control, which will make everyone know about it.

Obviously not dismissed as “old news” by the DNC, otherwise why the mad dash to herd up the sycophant media and blog hosts? Even ahead of the airing. Hmmmm?

The Democratic National Committee — armed with the help of dismissive tweets from a variety of journalists — scrambled Tuesday night to attack The Daily Caller for its videos of President Obama’s controversial race comments in 2007 before the story was even published.

Using comments from reporters speculating on TheDC’s report, the Democrats quickly worked to dismiss the story it hadn’t seen yet — which was teased Tuesday afternoon on Sean Hannity’s radio show and on the Drudge Report — by calling it “lame.”

At about 7:30 p.m. ET, the DNC Rapid Response team sent an email to reporters titled “That was Lame,” listing “instant reaction to the latest lame Drudge/Hannity desperation tactics.”

The email merely included tweets from journalists — before the story was published — expressing skepticism and disinterest and the mistaken claim that the video had been published before.

The tweets used by the Democratic National Committee came from reporters at organizations including Politico, BuzzFeed, The Huffington Post, The New York Times, New York Magazine and the Atlantic.

The mere prospect that videos of Obama talking about race and his former pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, would be published had the committee quickly working to kill the story.

In an attempt to link the story to Republican nominee Mitt Romney, the DNC also sent out an old story about Romney saying he would not make Wright a campaign issue.

So this new bombshell video is the Republicans idea of the “October” surprise? I hope to hell they’re not thinking of replacing Halloween with that bullsheet!

I attended a party over the weekend, where one of the guest was a personal friend of Ann Romney. She related that she told Ann that she couldn’t vote for Mitt because of his position on women’s issues, like right to choose. Ann informed her that she need not worry, because he is only pandering to the right wing nuts to get elected, and doesn’t really think that way – true story.

“He is ripping this country apart at the seams and you don’t seem a bit concerned. ”

Actually it’s all you teee baggerzzz and racist klansmen “ripping the country apart”…

And your remedy for this is to go back to the policies of 2000-2008. That’s why smart liberals are not inclined to vote for Mittens… Look at yourselves man, I came out in support of Huntsman yesterday and was called a marxist by one of your ilk. Liking Huntsman makes me a marxist??!?

Apparently the “October Surprise” is that the Republicans have learned nothing from this campaign season and continue to grasp at straws. A 5 year old video, that anyone not using a “dial up” modem could easily view since 2007 is their “ace in the hole”? Really?

“white honkeys are dumb and always vote Republican” – Imaginary Obama

That was racist. Did Obama say that?

With todays technology, I don’t understand why Hannity doesn’t just manufacture some footage of Obama standing outside a warehouse and personally handing out brownshirts and jackboots to his “secret army”.

Have Sean and Tucker uncovered the secret legislation in which Obama plans to replace Lincoln on the 5 dollar bill with an image of Reverend Wright?

Liking Huntsman makes me a marxist?

Crazy, huh?

When I refer to some self-identifying conservatives here and in the right-blogosphere as “nutters” or “wingnuts” or suchlike, just for the record–I am referring to the sort of person who would actually think such a thing.

I recognize that there are plenty of somewhat rational right-leaners, who (for example) might want to have rational discussions about what degree of involvement the federal government should have in personal lives, who can discuss these things calmly and on a macro level.

“I came out in support of Huntsman yesterday and was called a marxist by one of your ilk.”

Supporting Huntsman’s flat tax policy makes you a right-wing “regressive” tax supporter. Libruls hate your kind.

I want to address a sub-plot getting some play in all this.

Word got out after the 2008 election that Team McCain considered using the Rev. Wright angle to attack Obama; I guess this came to light, mostly after some Romney SuperPAC was considering Going There a few months back. (Rachel was talking a bit about that last night, as well, which reminded me about it.)

Here’s what I don’t get. Why are we uncritically buying the notion that Team McCain decided not to Go There because it would be decisive, wrong, Bad for the Country, etc.?

Isn’t it a lot more likely they didn’t Go There because it would be pointless, ineffective, not something about which the vast majority of voters could possibly give a good crap? As I have said countless times–our so-called Liberal Media played the “God Damn America” clip from the Scary Colored Minister over and over and over again in March 2008. There’s no way anyone missed that connection to Obama. The right wing echo chamber had people spreading the stupid “Obama belonged to a ‘racist’ church!” bit for months and months; you continue to see “racist church!” flags hoisted aloft in online discussions and, I imagine, AM talk radio.

It obviously didn’t make a difference among anyone who wasn’t already pre-disposed not to vote for Obama based on discomfort with his race, or with his past associations. This stuff had been out there for forever–for crying out loud, the title of his bestselling book, “The Audacity of Hope,” was a catchphrase he’d taken from Rev. Wright!

Why people continue to cling to this notion that Obama still hasn’t been “vetted”, or that McCain going dirtier than they did, would’ve made a plug nickel’s worth of difference, is something that truly mystifies me.

Finn, that’ll be filed with “We’d have 7%, not 8%, nationwide unemployment if not for tightwad Goopers in the House” in the “Stuff too difficult to explain in a general election soundbite” file, I’m afraid.
