Bettye Lavette’s been around a while. In fact, if you were touring back in the early ’60s with the likes of Ben E. King, Otis Redding and James Brown, and you’re still at it today, you qualify as an authentic R&B veteran. That’s a marathon runner in the musical world.
And as you’ll see if you watch this remarkably emotional performance from just a couple of years ago, Bettye does not sell her audience short. To the contrary, she sells everything she’s got and then some.
Ladies and gentlemen, to kick off the weekend, I give you the fabulously soulful Miss Bettye Lavette!

Stevie Ray,
I think we should change focus just like our President did to focus on aq.
Focus on middle class jobs and return to full employment and then see what we can cut without harming our economy.
Our President is on this right track.

Everyone needs to pay for their own healthcare (even without a job) and but their children healthcare (with or without a job).

Making credit “more available” has been a double edged sword imo.
Many people and corporations can point to the advantages and show valid examples, however there are many who were financially wrecked.
In the short term it seemed to work great on the macro level. More credit, usually leads to more spending. Since 70% of our economy is based on consumer spending we appeared to have had a upward economy over the last 30yrs as you mentioned, minuses the bubbles and current situation. Heck allowed for tax rates on the whole to decrease.
Problem is that imo it works better on paper over the long haul than it does in reality.
Spending has kept going up, people are used to lower taxes on avg and of course credit problems for many people are coming down, but still at high high levels.
While I may not agree with all his business practices, I have not been one to knock Romney’s taxes or off-shoring of jobs. He is a success and has done it better than most based on the system in place. Many people have done well over the last 30 yrs, I am only 43 and surely not in the poor house.
However, while I do think the Democrats as a whole, not just Obama will have to work on spending, more “supply side” economics isn’t the answer.

JM: $2 billion a year is spent on sugar drinks by the food stamp program every year
That’s because its cheaper to buy Kool-Aid then it is to buy Orange Juice. Its cheaper to buy cereal than it is to buy organic eggs. Change the game and you’ll change the outcome.
TBS: He was either being ignorant for ignorance sake, so willingly brainwashed with “supply side” economic theory or both.
If I have a vote, I’d go with just ignorant. My bad.
Common: Many people who use SNAP don’t own a car and have to rely on public transportation or walk.
Liberal LIES!!! Why just the other day, In Whole Foods, I saw this lady with 13 kids and a SNAP card buying steaks and lobster and then driving of in her BMW!!!!
Bro: And nobody outside of Conservatives expected the same from Obama. The reason you see people defend Obama from criticism, such as yours, is because people with common sense know things were not going to be corrected in a matter of months or even within 3 years

Scout: Just backing you up on you own statement
Well, considering how much you like to quote that statement, I’m also sure you’ve remembered that he didn’t say that he would make that proposition himself. I’d also add that the GOP have been pretty adamant in pushing said proposition themselves. It’s ultimately up to the voters to decide whether that happens or not.
As to your “fooling himself”, I think Obama seriously fooled himself by thinking that the GOP would actually work with him to straighten out the economy. That’s just me though.

Stevie: Do you really think it is the GOP’s intent to cut anything more than waste? Are you buying into the emotional political hand-jive that Ryan et al want to eliminate benefits for those who will need them? How can you suggest that we can continue to sustain these ever increaseing entitlements given the growth of those using same? We could tax 100% of “rich” and maybe offset 1 year or less of deficit spending given current trends…
Your argument would hold up better if the GOP was inclined to do away with, and not fight to maintain and even expand THESE “entitlements”:
***Walt Disney Corp., whose profits in 1995 exceeded $1 billion, received $300,000 in federal assistance to perfect fireworks displays.
****Kopin Corp., a Massachusetts technology company, has received $30 million in federal subsidies the last four years and tens of millions more in savings through the lease of a state-owned laboratory. Despite this huge public investment, the company plans to send more and more of its new manufacturing jobs overseas.
**** The federal government now spends roughly $65 billion each year on more than 100 programs that provide taxpayer assistance to American businesses. [3] Terminating those programs today could save taxpayers at least $300 billion over the next five years.
******Most of this $65 billion in aid benefits businesses in four industries: agriculture, exports, high technology, and energy. These subsidies tend to have a Robin-Hood-in-reverse impact: redistributing income from generally middle-income taxpayers to the relatively higher-income owners and shareholders in the companies—including multi-million-dollar recipients such as Rockwell International Corporation, Westinghouse, B.F. Goodrich, McDonnell Douglas, and AT&T—that receive the government checks.
Gas companies, Westinghouse, et al, do not need help.
Unfortunately, corporate welfare has been the largest fiscal blind spot of congressional budget cutters. Virtually every corporate welfare program that aided and abetted private industry in 1995 continues to funnel funds to corporate America in 1997. The federal umbilical cord to the Fortune 500 has not been severed. Many industrial aid programs have had their budgets increased.

Was watching this expose of Fox News on CurrentTV earlier, and they showed, through archival footage, how Fox News “reports” closely and sometimes word for word, emulated the agenda coming from the GOP/Karl Rove. It was amazing.
They also showed the same correlation between the GOP/Rove and Talk Radio. First you’d hear it from a press conference from the Bush White house, then those same EXACT words would be heard on Talk Radio and Fox News.

Yes polls can change and many on the right keep referring to Reagan and Carter. Of course Carter was wiped out during the debates and lost his lead before the election and was trounced on election day.
One also has to keep in mind that Carter had a 35% approval rating, which Obama doesn’t have and I do not think many people believe Romney to be a Reagan.
Surely not over, but Romney can’t have status quo and expect victory. If the overall electorate isn’t awed by his performance, they will stick with what they have. Sort of like 2004.

I somewhat agree but also remember the electorate has changed (no longer a majority interested in hard work, self-reliance and freedom) and will continue to change as new generations are sucked into the “big-government” quicksand.

They BOTH suck:
“If the overall electorate isn’t awed by his performance”
You are correct. Our presidential elections and thereby our Republic and our future will be determined by “The Dating Game” scenario.
Truly sad ………………………

I think you will hear our President’s stump speech in the first debate and willard will use his too.
Nothing but whining about not cleaning up all the gop’s mess yet.
Our President wins easily.

Hey Orangie: I was right. The Dawgs didn’t drop, but LSU did again. We were lucky that others had equally crappy “wins” lol and that no one behind us looked really good.

LSU deserved to be dropped and we will see if they can compete at a higher level next Saturday against Florida.
They tend to step up their game in big games like Florida. They crushed a Washington team that beat Stanford.

If Romney is unable to articulate his message that is his problem………. PERIOD
It is his fault that he isn’t leading and only has the debates left to prove himself………. PERIOD
I doubt a man who spent as many years as you did working in law enforcement, spent too much time make excuses………. quit doing it for Republicans and Romney.
Both sides make excuses when they lose. The right just had a significant win two years ago. Many on this blog ignored or laughed at me, when I told them do not be surprised when 2012 isn’t a repeat. Only 34% of the electorate voted in 2010. That will not be the case in 2012.
No offense, but I will show you the demographics after the election and you will still complain and make excuses about the “moochers” and “takers”……. You will not speak of those who vote Republican who fit some of these came “categories”. You will not speak of the fact that Romney didn’t get his message across. You will just have excuses and broad brushes that in many cases will not ring true when looking at the details.
