Travelin’ music? SHE’ll tell you about travelin’ music!

Bettye Lavette’s been around a while. In fact, if you were touring back in the early ’60s with the likes of Ben E. King, Otis Redding and James Brown, and you’re still at it today, you qualify as an authentic R&B veteran. That’s a marathon runner in the musical world.

And as you’ll see if you watch this remarkably emotional performance from just a couple of years ago, Bettye does not sell her audience short. To the contrary, she sells everything she’s got and then some.

Ladies and gentlemen, to kick off the weekend, I give you the fabulously soulful Miss Bettye Lavette!

Why was it reckless? He is spot on. Good thing for Obama that they aren’t going to look into this thing until after the election.

Oops. Thanks to all for your good wishes – much appreciated! Will keep you posted re timing. I guess at some point one just has to say WTF & roll with it. (OMG, an old woman said THAT?) :)

Josef, please tell me the name of your book again; I know I will need some good ones to stack beside that bed. So far, I have DRIFT by Rachel Maddow, & a bio of Jane Fonda. Plan to order THE OATH by Jeffrey Toobin, who also wrote THE NINE, which I really enjoyed. Any & all suggestion are welcome – I enjoy good fiction, but not those fluffy romance things.
Again, thanks to you all; your support, along with my family& friends, will help me through this.

Well, we would of got 18 in but then Joe Bill took a ball right on the top of his head. We was waiting on the tee for a bunch of hackers to find a ball up on the hillside when we heard somebody yell and next thing we know Joe Bill’s eyes turned in toward his nose and he slumped down to his knees. The ranger said we needed to get him to a Dr. and so we took him to the emergency room because it’s free, you know, or at least none of us have to pay for it. A Dr. there said Joe Bill was lucky the ball hit him on the head. If it would of hit him anyplace else he might be hurt bad.

Anyway, I’m real sorry to hear G Mare needs surgery. I’ll put in a prayer request for her down at the Church of Holiness tomorrow morning before my nap before the sermon begins.

Maybe I’m being naive and overly optimistic, but I think we’re getting a bit carried away and a bit hysterical in our reaction to the Libyan situation. There are two factors here that we’re not always paying attention to in our own response on the street. First, the Ambassador was a popular figure in Libya and held in high esteem by a broad cross section of the Libyan population, viewed as friend. his approach and the Libyan response was, of course, a threat to the radical Islamacist factions. Secondly, while there were mobs attacking US institutions elsewhere in the ME, tens of thousands of :Libyans took to the streets to tell us how sorry they were that such a thing had happened. It was the first massive demonstrations on our behalf.

It would behoove us to curry that support. Theirs is a fragile situation. Instead of throwing around “blame” and calling it a “failure,” we need to let them know how much we appreciate their courage in taking on those who would sully their name and sabotage their revolution.

Josef@6:24, YES! We need to support, value, & cultivate the friends we still have in the ME. Yes the devastating attack on Mr. Stevens & our consulate there is reprehensible. However, we MUST bear in mind who the enemy is! I think the enemy is not the government, but rather the extremists. So let’s not throw out the proverbial baby with the bath water. You can call me the “wide eyed optimist,” but I think & hope (& perhaps pray) that we have more friends there than are able to speak up. I have often thought about why we, as a nation, do not just get out of there & let the ME fight it out among themselves. But then, I think about the help our country received others when we launched our revolution against England. The lust for liberty is strong! We can not turn our backs! If nothing else, this is our heritage.
Okay, off soapbox for now.

The Israeli-Kurd alliance is a long standing one that goes way, way back. Beyond the deep cultural affinity, though, there is the Macchiavellian and the world of Byzantine politics at play today. While Israel has been quite open in its relations with the autonomous Kurdish enclave in Iraq, it has been until recently more circumspect in relation to Turkey with whom it has until recently had proper to good relations. The current regime in Turkey has taken an increasingly anti-Israeli stance and has been cozying up to Iran. With an autonomous Syrian Kurdish entity, it’s only a matter of time until it has to face the music, so to speak, for its brutal oppression of its own Kurdish population. Iran has begun a serious crackdown on its Kurds, accusing them, and not entirely without some justification, of allowing the Israelis a base for their plans to take on the Irani nukes. There’s a deal in the works for Israel to sell fighter jets to the Iraqi Kurdish “militia.” The question is where the Syrian Kurds are getting their heavier weapons. The whole mess is getting dicey, and now Greece has been making moves that direction, partially in relation to their connection to the Orthodox Christians in Syria. but having held not-so-secret meetings with the Syrian Kurds. There’s no love lost between the Turks and the Greeks.

All in all, it’s getting dicey.
On the more positive side, I was reading where some 2000 Israeli citizens, Jews, Christians, Muslims and Druze, have entered Syria “illegally” to provide humanitarian aid.

Is the name Braves offensive? Well, not nearly so much so as the Redskins, which is downright racist and pejoriative, but hey, that’s the national capital, so why not, eh? :-) Braves carries within it a certain respect for the fighter. The Seminole nation of Florida are the first to come to the defense of Florida’s mascot and their sensitivity to Seminole culture–not to mention the first rate education so many of their tribe get there.

In regards to Rice, I don’t even think it’s about race. I think many, on the right, have simply gone bat shiiite crazy and simply can’t do anything beyond a guttural “ugh!!” when it comes to anything done by the opposition party.

When it comes to the reporting, they have never thought of the consequences of jumping the gun and assuming the worst. Instead, it’s a neverending parade of “ready, fire, aim”. They have yet to realize the difference between the tortise and the hare and simply choose to react with blazing speed without engaging brain cells. Maybe some are afraid that if they engage their brain cells, that will zap precious energy from their ability to be macho or something.

—————

In regards to Sen. Brown’s people, they should be ashamed of themselves and appologize in public to every descendent of every native tribe to all of the Americas. That was totally uncalled for and way beneath anything that any “true” American should ever think of doing. Better yet, why don’t they be good Republicans and resign? Seems that Republicans resign when they f**k up and this was a major f**k up if there ever was one. How soon will we see the resignations get turned in?

I realize that not all the information is there, but I think that we need to be treating the Embassy attack and the protests as two separate things, as the Libyan population seems to be doing. That attack, I believe, was a long time in the planning and execution, the date alone being significant in that. I think it was one of those ironies of history that the two coincided.

The terrorists are playing it up as one and the same, taking advantage of the PR angle and, I fear, those of us outside Libya are falling for their tactic and, unwittingly, lending them support…

I saw that, and it still doesn’t change the fact that one vote is one vote. If they don’t vote and I do, that’s one less there and one more here. One vote is all that’s needed to swing your electoral college votes. You build a home by starting with the foundation, not the roof.

For example, the vote of Dave Smith in Sheridan, Wyo., counts almost 3 1/2 times as much mathematically as those of his wife’s aunts in northeastern Ohio.

If Dave does not vote, that does not equal almost 3 1/2 less votes for a candidate either. That is simply one less vote for whatever candidate he would have voted for. If Dave votes for the losing candidate in his state and his aunt votes for the winning candidate in her’s, which vote, according to your math, counts more then?

As I said, one person… one vote.

Orange: Normally I would agree, but Stanford lost while KState, Florida, and Notre Dame didn’t play. South Carolina isn’t doing so hot and West Virginia barely won while giving up 63 points to freaking BAYLOR. Ohio State escaped Mich State and Texas plays Ok State, who is mediocre. That takes care of the top 15 or 16. I just don’t see us falling this week.

And as I (and about a dozen news articles/editorials and the U.S. Constitution and the Supreme Court through rulings) said, you would be wrong

Nope, when you, your dozen news articles/editorials, and the US Constitution can prove that Dave not voting is a loss of 3 1/2 votes for the candidate he supports as opposed to losing a single vote, then I’ll believe you.

I notice you didn’t answer about the vote when a person votes for the losing candidate in a smaller state vs a voter choosing a winning candidate in a larger state. It still comes down to one person, one vote. If you think it’s all about the electoral college, then why don’t you stay home in November since your vote isn’t worth as much as Dave’s is?

Keep Up the Good Fight!

Oh and Orange? The Criminoles can’t stick a fork in South Florida. There is STILL a possiblilty that the Bulls could pull off an upset. A SMALL chance, but a chance nonetheless. 17-30 with 3:53 left and FSU is about to punt.

I don’t need land, but since your vote doesn’t count as much as Dave’s, are you staying at home? It’s a simple yes or no question…

TBS: Unfortnately the dawgs CAN’T score at will as we found out at the end of the game. We didn’t win that one so much as they LOST it. We went three and out what, 4 times there at the end? Fortunately we got an interception and a fumble to kill the last two TN possessions.

They BOTH suck:

It was called “Manifest Destiny” at the time. You studied it in school but you’ve probably forgotten ……………….. :

By the way, I didn’t know those eeeeviiiiiillllll Democrats started the “War with Mexico” !!!

“Manifest Destiny was the belief widely held by Americans in the 19th century that the United States was destined to expand across the continent. The concept, born out of “a sense of mission to redeem the Old World,” was enabled by “the potentialities of a new earth for building a new heaven.”[1] The phrase itself meant many different things to many different people. The unity of the definitions ended at “expansion, prearranged by Heaven.” [2] Mid-19th Century Democrats would use it to explain the need for expansion past the Louisiana Territory.

Manifest destiny provided the dogma and tone for the largest acquisition of U.S. territory. It was used by Democrats in the 1840s to justify the war with Mexico and it was also used to acquire portions of Oregon from the British Empire. But Manifest Destiny always limped along because of its internal limitations and the issue of slavery, says Merk, and never became a national priority. By 1843, John Quincy Adams, a major supporter, had changed his mind and repudiated Manifest Destiny because it meant the expansion of slavery in Texas.[3]

The legacy is a complex one. The belief in an American mission to promote and defend democracy throughout the world, as expounded by Abraham Lincoln and later by Woodrow Wilson and George W. Bush, continues to have an influence on American political ideology.[4][5]“
