After all the speeches and campaign ads and debates, politics comes down to cold hard numbers. It always has; it always will.
In fact, when you get right down to it, only one number really counts, and every politician and political strategist knows it: 50 percent of those who turn out, plus one more vote to put you over the top. That’s the goal;, that’s the Holy Grail; that’s the number that your entire campaign strategy is designed to achieve because it guarantees election.
Just ask President Al Gore.
OK, in that one instance, getting the most votes earns you a divorce and an ownership stake in a cable channel that no one’s ever watched. But that’s because the presidency is different. To become leader of the free world, a candidate needs a minimum of 270 votes in the electoral college. Failing that, five votes on the U.S. Supreme Court will do.
Today, with the 2012 presidential campaign at full throttle, it seems as though every political scientist in the country hoping to get on Fox or CNN (which is every political scientist in the country) is out there touting his or her own computerized, highly sophisticated predictive model for how this election will turn out.
Me, I already know.
While others may have math, I have THE math, in the form of my own statistical model. It has been carefully calibrated over the years to the point that after the fact, it has accurately predicted the outcome of every presidential race dating back to Grover Cleveland. In the interest of transparency, I’m about to let you in on the secret details of how it works:
In my model, as in most such models, we start with the basics: The number of women to whom the GOP candidate’s grandfather was married at any one time, which in this case would be (4). You multiply that by the number of extramarital affairs conducted over a lifetime by the spouse of the current secretary of state (237). (CAUTION: This number could shift at any moment.)
You then add the number of emails sent in the past four years depicting the Democratic nominee with a bone through his nose, which would be 457,283. You divide that by the total number of beers and cigarettes tried by the GOP nominee in his lifetime (2), divided again by the total number of beers and cigarettes consumed by the Democrat (58,399).
You multiply that by the square root of the number of hair follicles transplanted into the Democratic VP (√6,798=83.53) divided by the best marathon time fraudulently claimed by the Republican VP nominee (2.55).
Subtract the percentage of Americans gratuitously insulted by the GOP nominee (47), add the number of times in a best-two-out-of-three match that the First Lady would beat you arm-wrestling (3), and then also add the number of dog-lover votes — in units of tens of thousands — lost by the Republican for transporting an aptly named Irish setter (Seamus) on the station-wagon roof (236.5).
Finally, you add the number of percentage points that all polls but Rasmussen are skewed in favor of Democrats (10). Voila!
You now have the mortal-lock number of electoral college votes that the Democratic nominee will win in any given year.

Obama will win. I would rather Romney win but maybe we would be better off without having the disruption of a new admin being put in place and implementing new ideas. And if Obama keeps the office we would have no disruption due to the tranition. One other thing about electing Obama again is that he has a big list of items to do in the next four years, that list would be called 2008 campaign promises, its a big list.

Stevie Ray, I haven’t seen a discussion of that, but off the top of my head, I think you could use the following logic chain to justify using 2008 turnout as your model:
1) True, some of the excitement around Obama has dimmed since ‘08, reducing turnout of young and minority voters a bit, etc.
2) However, the electorate has also changed over the last four years, with fewer older voters and the share of minority voters increasing.
3) Therefore, with 1 offsetting 2, the 2008 model is appropriate.
Mixing ‘04 with ‘08 is dangerous, it would seem, because the electorate has seen a lot of changes since ‘04. But again, I’m no statistician and this is all off the cuff.

It’s better than using 2010 as your model, which is what he usually starts with.
The real question is this: does a national poll matter? At this point, not at all and both campaigns will tell you they’re ignoring those polls and focusing on the polls in the 6-8 states still in play.

Seems that since the SCOTUS decided that money talks, you’re going to have to get any such legislation to remove money from the election system past that same group. Do you think Romney’s going to nominate someone who will overturn Citizen’s United?

In its first year, the Obama administration vowed an increase in transparency across government, including through the Freedom of Information Act, the proactive release of documents and the establishment of an agency to declassify more than 370 million pages of archived material.
Three years later, new evidence suggests that administration officials have struggled to overturn the long-standing culture of secrecy in Washington. Some of these high-profile transparency measures have stalled, and by some measures the government is keeping more secrets than before.

BUTCH,
It is true that no poll can project voter turnout and Rasumussen smooths its results by hedging..it makes much more actuarial sense than simply assuming folks will vote in the numbers..particularly Dems, in same fashion of all the others..
Obama will win..of that I am convinced..but IMO it will be a lot closer and nobody should discount the difference at this point…I recall Carter was leading Reagan by double digits..only chance Romney has is if all the religious zealots (millions of which stayed home in 2008) turnout AND Obama turnout more resembles 2004..these are credible variables..

His overall poor leadership and resulting weaknesses, not just this incident, are why I label him spinelss..on most of the important issues (im sure you will start your “he killed OBL” crap…he actuallly called the attack off on so many occaisions to make sure he didn’t get politically jammed like Bush at Tora Bora)…ME relationships, he is indecisive and dilatory..whether surrendering his leadership in PelosiCare, failing to broker a budget deal to avoid downgrading of debt, his less than leading handling of Holder situation…to name several..

I think we have more serious risks than our debt and deficit. As long as we have politicians who have no qualms about screwing us up financially, those two things are an issue. If they were a serious risk, then people would not have been snapping up US Treasuries when the stock markets tanked. Our bonds are still pretty safe when compared to other countries.
As to Libya, if we go in there guns blazing, what happens to the remaining evidence from the attack?

There is no evidence left at embassy..our classified information is gone and the place is in shambles..the purpose is to clarify who had a role and how deep it goes and whether the government there really got whoever is responsible…
Regarding spending 40% more than we take in..I argue it is by far our most significant security risk. we are already overdependent on debt to finance these annual deficits..it won’t take much at all for our interest costs to rise beyond 50% of our annual take..rendering us at the mercy of other countries in a large sense to have cash to continue to dictate our security policy…of course the other key issue is the money supply and our continued strategy to print money..we already have more than double the currency in circulation than 10 years ago…only a matter of time if we continue this tactic, our interests cost will increase…

No. That is a term I use when I look back at the 6,606 American men and woman killed in the two wars started by Bush – due to incompetence. You don’t nilly willy start wars, you don’t nilly willy invade countries, and you don’t nilly willy draw red lines. Regarding spending 40% more than we take in..I argue it is by far our most significant security risk.
It’s a risk that has a easy remedy. We simply need to pay for more ourselves. You know, raise more revenue domestically. As long as we are the reserve currency of the world, we are safe. What’s making things unsafe are the jackasses in DC who would much rather destroy everything in their paths just to keep their offices. It’s not our borrowing that’s the problem at all.

Seems that the overall GOP campaign style of 2012 can best be described as the Etch-A-Sketch technique….
But the movement’s biggest RINO hunter is now changing his tune as he tries to woo moderate voters in a tight race that stands as a key test of the tea party’s ability to win outside the nation’s most conservative states.
Mourdock is matched in the general election against moderate Democratic Rep. Joe Donnelly, who is running even in recent polls despite Indiana’s Republican tilt. Suddenly, gone is the strident rhetoric in which Mourdock proclaimed that bipartisanship meant Democrats coming over to Republicans’ thinking and that winning meant he would “inflict my opinion on someone else.” In its place are support for parts of President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul, pledges to protect Democratic-championed programs like Social Security and Medicare, and even the once-shunned notion of compromise.
Welcome to “Extreme Makeover: Mourdock Edition.”

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) — Shortly after newly elected Rep. Dan Benishek arrived in Washington, staffers raised a banner in his Capitol Hill suite that proclaimed: “If you are here to ask for more money, you’re in the wrong office!”
The message was fitting for a tea party favorite who had railed against federal spending and a “nanny-state mentality” during the 2010 campaign that led to a Republican takeover of the House. But it was something new for his constituents in northern Michigan, a largely rural area where a spirit of self-reliance coexists with the reality that government — popular or not — is a crucial economic player.
So, he rides the Tea Party Express to DC vowing to cut federal spending, and the people vote for him to do that. Now, the people realized that cutting federal spending meant getting less money at home. Ooops!!! Now, the locals are mad because he didn’t bring home the bacon.
I think this is the part where the rhetorical cold front meets with the reality warm front and all kinds of severe weather breaks out. Funny how people are against doing something until it affects them personally.

Putting aside the decimals, jay’s model says he will win most swing states
In fact, unless he believes Romney loses republican leaning Missouri (which can be combined with a loss in Iowa or Nevada to get 331), jay’s model says Obama will win the swing states except for Iowa, Nevada, and New Hampshire.
Given Obama’s current lead in Iowa and Nevada (up by 4%), I would say there are problems with Jay’s model

Morning all! I see Aquagirl is in rare form this a.m. and I’m glad Jay took a side trip into the outer limits with the rest of us. Sometimes you gotta laugh in order to not go insane.
Every day that it gets closer and closer to the actual election, people are getting crazier and crazier, (especially the cons — if that’s possible). For instance:
Man on Radio this a.m. — “I’m not voting” DJ- “Why?” Man – “Because Obama likes Gays and gays are sinning against God.” DJ – “So that means you’re gonna vote for Mitt?” Man – “Hell naw! Mitt is a mormon! That ain’t even no real religion man!” DJ – “Huh?” Man – “Look, if I ain’t gonna vote for Obama, a black man like me ’cause he likes gays, I DEFINITELY ain’t gonna vote for a white man who likes lizards!!!” DJ – “Huh?” Man – “You heard me.”
Random thoughts (in no particular order):
Right now I’m despondent because the REAL referees have decided to take the offer the NFL made — I was hoping for a longer hold out……say about 6 -7 more weeks………..long enough for Miami to “win” a few and be able to vie for a playoff spot. Oh well.
Saw a “Bama” fan the other day riding around in a yellow car — I thought to myself, “A Yellow Bammer — how appropriate.”
Wednesday was a very rough day for me, found out that Brittany Griner got drafted into some suck azz team instead of coming to Atlanta to play with the Dreams. With Griner and Angel, the dreams would’ve been unstoppable.
Monday I got kicked off of Schultz’s blog — again. I would’ve felt bad, but I’m doing him a favor anyway by even READING that crap he calls “reporting”.

I’ve been searching the internet trying to find a pig farm that has “organically fed pigs”, (meaning no mob boss, hitman, or drug dealer, has tried to loose a couple of people via chopping them up and feeding them to the pigs); and so far haven’t found any near here.
If i do, i’m gonna order that the whole pig be turned into Bacon. No hamhocks, (bacon hocks only), no hog maws, (bacon maws only), and no snouts, (baconouts only); just bacon.

The Republican National Committee has abruptly cut ties to a consulting firm hired for get-out-the-vote efforts in seven presidential election swing states after Florida prosecutors launched an investigation into possible fraud in voter registration forms.
Working through state parties, the RNC has sent more than $3.1 million this year to Strategic Allied Consulting, a company formed in June by Nathan Sproul, an Arizona voting consultant. Sproul has operated other firms that have been accused in past elections of improprieties designed to help Republican candidates, including dumping registration forms filled out by Democrats, but none of those allegations led to any criminal charges.

When are you liberals going to listen to the “secret” tape of Mitt Romney and then report on what he really said?
He DID NOT SAY he doesn’t care about 47% of the people in America. He said that 47% of American people either pay no income tax, so they don’t care if he lowers taxes because they pay none, or that they are so dependent on government programs for assistance that they won’t vote for anyone who might reduce, or eliminate, the programs that they are so dependent on.
He said that those 47% of Americans are NOT GOING TO VOTE FOR HIM no matter what he says or what policies he would implement if elected.
Therefore, it isn’t his job to worry about those 47% because it would be a waste of his time and resources to try to convince them to vote for him.
THAT’S WHAT HE REALLY SAID!!!!!!

Romney reminds people of a boss they had/have that makes them want to quit their job. He reminds them of the boss that would make you come in on the weekend to prepare a report that could have waited until Monday. He’s the kind of boss that would expect you to work late at night then ding you for coming in a little later in the morning. I will say this,I do not care how much money CEO’s make, if they are creating jobs and improving the economy! Those are the significant job creators of the world not the govt. I supported Pres John F Kennedy(D), remember, ” Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country”. I guess you libs(D) do not live by that mantra any more? Sorry

Under Romney’s proposed health care plan, American families buying non-group health insurance would pay nearly double what they pay under Obamacare, according to a new study by Families USA entitled “ObamaCare versus RomneyCare versus RomneyCandidateCare.” That includes both comparative insurance premium payments as well as out-of-pocket expenses.

“Both Mitt and I have summer places up in New Hampshire on Lake Winnipesaukee. And a few summers ago I was taking my grandchildren and children to town in the boat for ice cream. And we got into the docks and they were all full and I looked around, there was no place to park, so we stopped at the end of a dock. They all jumped off and ran up the dock. And I realized there was nobody in the boat to help me dock the boat, handle the ropes, do anything — they just left me out there at sea. So I finally found a place to park after about 20 minutes, and I pulled in, I said, ‘Who’s going to grab the rope?,’ and I looked up and there was Mitt Romney. So he pulled me in, he tied up the boat for me. He rescued me just as he’s going to rescue this great country.”

Your case is your case. However, that doesn’t change things overall…
http://pewresearch.org/pubs/773/fewer-voters-identify-as-republicans
<i.In 5,566 interviews with registered voters conducted by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press during the first two months of 2008, 36% identify themselves as Democrats, and just 27% as Republicans.
The share of voters who call themselves Republicans has declined by six points since 2004, and represents, on an annualized basis, the lowest percentage of self-identified Republican voters in 16 years of polling by the Center.
…
Despite these trends, the proportion of voters who identify with the Democratic Party outright has not increased in recent years. Currently, 36% say they think of themselves as a Democrat, virtually unchanged from 2004 (35%) and 2000 (35%). Instead, as the proportion of self-identified Republicans has decreased, the percentage of independents has grown substantially, from 32% in 2004 to 37% today.
That’s the first one I came across when searching for percentages, but I’m willing to wager that the current percenage of self identified Republicans is even lower now.

Thirty-nine percent of respondents self-identified as independents, compared with 33 percent who considered themselves Democrats and 22 percent who identified as Republicans.
The study showed 33 percent of independents say their views are conservative, up from about 28 percent two years ago and 26 percent four years ago, a shift the study attributes at least in part to the spate of defections from the GOP in recent years.

I’ll bet she comes out of retirement in about 3 years to run for president. Gallup in May had her favorable rating at 66%, she is currently the most popular politician in the country. The speech Bill gave at the convention wasn’t only meant to help Obama. If she does run she is probably the early favorite. And yes it is early, anything can happen.

I wouldn’t have fallen for that fear, because I realized long ago that as long as I have my faith in God, there is no man on Earth that I need to fear. Whatever’s going to happen will happen no matter what I do. America has survived for over 200 years because of Americans. Until we quit trying to divide ourselves and become Americans again, we will continue on the path of self destruction.

From NY MAG
Presently, Drudge links to an article at the Washington Examiner explaining where this miraculous “Obama Phone” originated: with an FCC program called Lifeline in 1984 during the Reagan administration that, according to the agency’s website, “provides discounts on monthly service and initial telephone installation or activation fees for primary residences to income-eligible consumers.” The rationale, according to the agency, was that “FCC and Congress recognize that telephone service provides a vital link to emergency services, government services and surrounding communities.”
So Obama is not walking around Cleveland handing out smartphones to low-income citizens on the taxpayer’s dollar to gin up votes. (Bumper stickers are free, though.) Atlantic Wire notes that the program was expanded under Clinton with the Telecommunications Act, while Think Progress points out a similar program called SafeLink Wireless, a “U.S. government supported program for income eligible households that ensures telephone service is available and affordable for eligible low-income households” started under George W. Bush.
Eventually Obama’s Truth Team stepped into the fray, probably after taking note of the many #obamaphone jokes going around Twitter. It directed followers to factcheck.org, which dispels the handout idea, or at least clarifies where the program originated and how low-income people access phones. Someone should probably tell that (alleged) Obama supporter where her free phone really came from, but we couldn’t bear to do it ourselves. It would be like telling a kid that Santa Claus isn’t real.

New poll: Romney overtakes Obama on terrorism
Posted By Uri Friedman Thursday, September 27, 2012 – 12:49 PM Share
The foreign-policy results of the new Bloomberg National Poll haven’t gotten much attention yet, but the survey contains some bad news for the Obama campaign. According to the poll, Mitt Romney has a 48-42 advantage over Barack Obama on the question of which candidate would be tougher on terrorism. Romney, in other words, has encroached on one of Obama’s signature strengths.
What makes this result so surprising is that the president has consistently trounced Romney when it comes to counterterrorism. A Fox News poll earlier this month found that 49 percent of respondents trusted Obama to do a better job than Romney in protecting the United States from terrorist attacks, compared with 41 percent who put their faith in the Republican candidate. The president had a 51-40 advantage on handling terrorism in an ABC News/Washington Post poll around the same time, and a 50-35 edge on carrying out the war on terror in an Ipsos/Reuters poll in August. …

Headline: “Obama’s Libya cover-up worse than Watergate”
Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee on Friday said the American people “have flat-out been lied to” by President Barack Obama and his administration about the violence in Libya — and this cover-up is worse than Richard Nixon’s scandal because “nobody died in Watergate.”
“Let’s just get blunt. No way to sugar coat this — We’ve been lied to. We have flat-out been lied to. They know they’ve lied,” Huckabee told Fox News’s “America’s Newsroom.” “It’s as if airplanes crashing into the World Trade Center and somebody says, ‘those were just accidents. The planes veered off course.’ Everybody with two eyes and IQ above plant life understands that what happened in Egypt and what happened in Libya was not some spontaneous reaction to a stupid 13-minute video on YouTube. It was a planned, coordinated, orchestrated attack led by terrorists.”

+++
Fewer older voters? The Demographics of almost every country in the Western World shows an increase in older people. Plus Older people vote in higher numbers. Where did you get such a statistic?
I think any logic in predicting turnout is really just rationalization. Even though polls that show registered voters are probably inaccurate because they do not account for turnout at least there is no manipulation of the numbers. There really is no way to predict turnout because there is very few data points which is what anyone who has had a statistics class will tell your. I personally feel it is better if the polls are close that way both sides are motivated to vote. If one side is way ahead many people may not go out and vote.

Skewed intelligence.
How much did VP Cheney pressure the intelligence community to say Iraq had WMD ?
I believe he did, looking to pick up an easy win. As a result, Afghanistan slowly evolved into the mess we are in now.
Flawed intelligence resulted in 5-6000 dead soldiers + countless dead Iraqis/Afghans + Billions wasted + masses of wounded civilians/military = Not Good.
But, most of our military heros here aren’t worried about that; they’re concerned about 4 diplomatic personnel and our “loss of respect”.
If we had that Respect before Obama we wouldn’t have had all those terrorists attacking us since Reagan.
