The core problem with Mitt Romney is, well, his core. As in he apparently doesn’t have one. This is a man who can say the following in an interview yesterday with NBC’s Ron Allen, when asked about his lack of empathy …
—————
“Don’t forget, I got everybody in my state insured. One hundred percent of the kids in our state had health insurance. I don’t think there’s anything that shows more empathy and care about the people of this country than that kind of record.”
—————
…. and then literally a few minutes later stand in front of a crowd and say this:
—————
“I will repeal Obamacare and replace it with real health care reform. You see, Obamacare is really Exhibit No. 1 of the president’s political philosophy, and that is that government knows better than people how to run your lives. It is a view that government should stand between you and your doctor. I don’t believe in a bigger and bigger government…I believe in freedom.”
—————
I think that’s remarkable. If creating such a system is evidence of empathy, what does it say about a person who seeks to dismantle such a system? How can a person go from one statement to another without an apparent hitch, and seemingly with equal sincerity? Which statement reflects the “true” Romney?
I do not know. I am baffled by the man. In fact, given such statements, the more pertinent question may be: Can a “true” Romney even be said to exist?

Well, you may have a point. The incidence of heart attacks among fans of the Red Sox, for example, may well exceed national norms. And a diet of lobstah dipped in buttah, not to mention fried clams, washed down with wicked amounts of Samuel Adams beer, could further complicate matters.

Not complicated, Jay. I’ve said it before. The decision to implement Obamacare was made in Washington. The decision to implement Romneycare wasn’t. Romney wants decisions like that to be made in Atlanta, Boston, and other state capitals, not in the nation’s capital. A decision made in Atlanta might not be the same as a decision made in Boston or another state capital.
I described decision-making at the state level as “better,” and a few minutes later another blogger (Joe Hussein Mama, I think, but don’t bet the paycheck on that) corrected me, saying that “better” would be having the decision made at the kitchen table, not at the state capital.
“Can a ‘true’ Romney even be said to exist?” Yes. The above is a partial description of him. “Which is the ‘true’ Romney?” Both. The positions are not contradictory, because one health plan doesn’t necessarily fit 50 states. Should the different states have the same health plan, for the sake of consistency? Possibly. That’s a topic for another day, though.

Sounds like the discussion Mrs. Paul and I had at lunch. I’d said at least if Pres Obama wins reelected, people will have health insurance and better overall health care. She asked about Romney. I said he’s talked about repealing ACA… then talks about replacing with something better… but generally won’t say what that ‘better’ is….
So I just don’t know.
But what I do know is, with Pres Obama in, my grandkids born with preexisting conditions won’t have to worry about getting insurance.

Jon Stewart had another one earlier this week showing Romney campaigning about the country explaining that Mr. Obama is all for redistribution……then cut to Romney’s 60 Minutes interview explaining how he is an advocate for progressive tax rates for the wealthy, which as we all know is redistribution.
It appears to me that his inconsistencies can be generally characterized into two buckets; 1) When he is talking to the national media he moderates his positions, 2) When at campaign rallies, (or private fundraisers), he lurches back rightward.

Explain how it is an act of empathy and a great victory to use the powers of state government to mandate purchase of health insurance, insure 100 percent of children and extend coverage to almost every adult in the state, yet doing that exact same thing on the federal level is socialism, an infringement on freedom and liberty and government interference between you and your doctor.
Please. You seem to think the explanation is obvious, so share it with the rest of us. Because I’m sure Mitt Romney would like to know the answer as well, given that he’s likely to be asked about it during the debates.

I cannot fathom how Mitt Romney can flop around like a fish out of water and yet some people think he is a great candidate or they don’ think he’s a great candidate, but they are going to vote for him anyway. He was all for Romneycare, but not Obamacare. He is all for states rights, except when he isn’t. He is all for the 47% to be tossed out of consideration in getting his vote at a $50,000 per plate fundraiser for his elite buddies, but supports our troops, our seniors, our struggling middle class all of whom are in that 47%. A whole lot of people don’t make $50,000 per year, much less spend it in one night. He took a $77,000 deduction for his wife’s dressage horse for her therapy, but wants to close tax loopholes. I’ve seen people tased that didn’t flop around as much as Mittens. Paul Ryan is worse than Mittens. What a terrible twosome.

The author is confusing “empathy” with “sympathy”. Empathy means understanding another person’s situation because you have had a similar experience. Sympathy is an acknowledgment of another person’s situation and offering support. I would wager that Mitt has never gone without health insurance, or an income, or a home or food or any of the other situations many American citizens have been in. Therefore, he cannot offer empathy, only sympathy.

Explain it to us, Matt.
So Matt, the floor is yours ….

EXCLUSIVE: Romney Invested Millions in Chinese Firm That Profited on US Outsourcing
Last month, Mitt Romney’s campaign got into a dustup with the Washington Post after the newspaper reported that Bain Capital, the private equity firm the GOP presidential candidate founded, invested in several US companies that outsourced jobs to China and India. The campaign indignantly demanded a retraction, claiming that these businesses did not send jobs overseas while Romney was running Bain, and the Post stood by its investigation. Yet there is another aspect to the Romney-as-outsourcer controversy. According to government documents reviewed by Mother Jones, Romney, when he was in charge of Bain, invested heavily in a Chinese manufacturing company that depended on US outsourcing for its profits—and that explicitly stated that such outsourcing was crucial to its success.

How about a President that costs the US tax-payers $1.4-billion per year to keep himself and his family in vacation digs and on shopping sprees at tax-payer expense? The Royal Family in Great Britain only costs their tax-payers $58-million per year and we do not have “royals” in this country. The list goes on…….

And it is not stereotyping, it is reality (whether you chose to believe it or not, that is your decision). Just go to the grocery store and watch how people pay for their food with cash and and how many pay with a “SNAPS” card. “Something for nothing!” is the mantra of the typical Obama supporter whether it be the ignorant (as displayed in this video) or the selfish old baby boomer who couldn’t give a rats ass about what happens when they die in a few years. And make no mistake, I don’t think for one minute that some of the whites and the hispanics aren’t just as pathetic as the person in this video. But soon, the money is going to be gone and in fact it already has, but the feds incessant printing is hiding it for a short time. QE is kind of “Fiscal Chemotherapy” if you will. It will slow down the cancer for a short period but ultimately the cancer will win. And when the money runs out, who will they all turn to then? The answer to that is that hey will turn on each other just as Greece and Spain are doing now. The young will feed on the old and what little assets they have left and after that, hello third world nation and total government control. And everyone will be poor and as for Obama? He will be living in luxury in Hawaii laughing at all you suckers that voted for him.

As I said 2 years ago that the former “liberal Republican governor of Massachusetts” will have a problem trying to stay on message as the Republican nominee for president of the US.
He has a problem with message. And not staying on message is a deadly to a political campaign.
His message changes weekly. It’s like he used to buy a company and if it was not a money maker, get rid of it. He does politics the same way. If a message does not instantly move him into 1st place, get rid of it and try another.
Obama is not winning; Romney is giving it away.
The economy is the worst in 80 years, unemployment is over 8% for 3+ years, the deficits has been $1 trillion+ for 4 straight years, the middle east policy is in shambles and the Romney forces have millions more in campaign money and they are losing the campaign for president.

If you think the campaign is a joke, the first 100 days would be disastrous. There’s no way to put “country first” (remember those words) while voting for Mitt Willard Romney. Given their lineup of potential candidates, the rebuplicans party has failed in 2008 and 2012 to provide any viable alternative to our current POTUS.

I’m not voting for either..it’s idiotic to vote for the status quo as it doesn’t matter who wins…the economy is going to remain difficult..(we are even not better off on macro level today than a year ago according to data released), we will still be screwing things up overseas, congress will remain 9% trusted by all of us,and the lobbyist, PACS and other cash laiden special interests will continue to make sure our interests in the eyes of politicians is subordinated to re-election cash requirements.

Oct. 3 all this is in the rear view mirror. The debates will make the convention bump look like an ant hill. O will leave Romney on stage talking to himself days later. ” I bet ya 10,000 dollars”. I bet old Perry is glad he is back in Texas, and when he sees what is going to happen to Romney he may even pardon a couple of those killers on death row to show his appreciation. O is leading and he hasn’t even swam his best event, debating, even I didn’t see that coming.

Well, I got to admit to being disappointed real bad. When somebody said there was Bigfoot sheets, I was all ready to talk about stuff I seen in the woods—besides bears doing you-know-what. I finally was going to get a chance to be the know-it-all, something like josef.
Turns out the blog wasn’t about Bigfoot at all. Just another librul attack on that poor, misunderstood man. He’s so beat up now that the libruls are turning out in droves in Iowa and other states to vote for the Socialist Muslim Kenyan.
Anyhow, if you’re like me and have health insurance from your job, you don’t want a bunch of bums and Those People to have it. I say let them go out and hump it the way I do to get it. I don’t want to get all hot and bothered and sound like #1 Foxy Lady, but far as I’m concerned, if they don’t have it they can just go suck it. I mean, if everybody gets it that’ll be one more thing that won’t be different between good Christian working people like me and those godless heathen, abortion-loving, freeloading bums. It’s sort of like the cell phones you see in the hands of all these folks at WalMart. You know they never paid for those phones. They’re sponging on us to get them. I say let them use a pay phone or heck tie some bailing twine between a couple cans if they want to talk to somebody that ain’t there.
It may already be too late for Romney. The libruls have him down on the ground and are pounding him while all their freeloading supporters are flocking to the polls right now. I just hate to see the pictures of all those fresh-faced punks lined up to give us four more years of Socialism.
And as for this new ad the Obama people put out, you know it’s got awful low in this country when you can’t even come out and tell the truth without somebody acting like you just murdered your Mom. Well, in your heart you know Romney’s right. And the Righter you are, the righter he is.
Anyhow, I’m headed back to the warehouse for the check-in. In maybe 30 minutes old Ace and me will be in front of the TV watching Fox News and Ace will be whining every time that ad with Johnny Cash singing “That Dirty Old Egg-Sucking Dog” comes on. I’ll just close by telling everybody, vote Republican. It’s better than bothering your brain with all those egghead thoughts.

Mitt shows his empathy by trying to save the very personal medical system that has evolved in the USA. Decisions have always been made on a case by case basis through discussions between the patient and doctor.
All that is needed is financial subsidy for the elderly and the lower income citizens.. The 2700 pages of care guidelines, devised by politicians, that will create a massive, new, cost-bloating bureaucracy to execute directives from above, directly interferes with doctor-patient relationship. Decisions were already made by lawmakers in DC.
Not only is it empathetic personally and medically it also is more efficient, less intrusive, and more humane.

The Palm Beach Post report last night that a Florida Republican Party contractor turned in at least 106 “questionable” registration firms, with “similar signatures” and wrong addresses, doesn’t seem like a national news story. But it has unwoven a somewhat concealed effort by Republicans in several states to deploy a firm with an ugly history of allegedly destroying Democratic voter registration forms and other acts of fraud.
The contractor in Florida is called Strategic Allied Consulting, a business entity created a few months ago and registered online by a former Arizona Republican Party director named Nathan Sproul.

In 2004, a voter registration worker in Nevada hired by Sproul’s firm told reporters that he had witnessed his surpervisors chucking registration forms signed by Democrats. “They were thrown away in the trash,” he claimed. Sproul’s canvassers in Oregon confessed to doing the same thing, and other reports emerged across several swing states. In Minnesota, workers said they were actually fired for bringing in registration forms signed by Democrats. CBS News obtained faxes showing that Sproul’s firm had even impersonated the left-leaning America Votes! to organize voter registration drives at libraries.

OK Romney is a dope but what politician doesn’t say anything to be elected?
They all do, but has any of them been worse at pulling it off than Romney?
Even his current BS about folks being better off is not true on a micro level
But he’s not the president on a micro level, is he? His job is to manage the macro level, and on that level, we are better off than we were 4 years ago. Do you not remember witnessing people’s fortunes disappearing on a daily basis with the dropping market 4 years ago?
Also, contrary to your opinion, many people are better off than they were 4 years ago. Some of us are still recovering, and some are worse off. So what? It’s all in whether you choose to stay the course or go back to the policies that led to our current situation. For many people, the path of least resistance is to go the current direction and not tempt fate twice by going back to the policies of the previous administration.

Scholars from New York University and Stanford have released a study of drone warfare in Pakistan. It calls for a “significant rethinking of current US [sic] targeted killing and drone strike policies.” The report is very negative on drone warfare. Nevertheless, it could have been much harder hitting had it condemned the U.S. presence in that region altogether.
How does drone warfare affect the lives of those living under drones that hover above for 24 hours at a time ready to strike someone who may be next to you? How do second-drone strikes affect those killed and wounded who are attending funerals for those killed in first strikes? The report contains the comments of Pakistanis who were interviewed.

My point is, have you been concerned about the US debt the entire time you were working post-Vietnam, or is this concern for the debt a new thing? Did you raise a ruckus about the debt when Reagan tripled it in 8 years? Did you raise a ruckus about it when GW Bush doubled it in 8 years?

Well, you have hit this nail right on the head.
We don’t really know what kind of president he could be. He won’t give any details – probably because details would anger his base or anger the independents. But can we trust that he would be willing to go against the almighty base if he does get elected? Nope, because he will then want a second term. He can’t deliver more than his base allows – and that is the same old turn health care back over to insurance and cut taxes – even if history tells us neither action is going to solve our problems.
At one time, I admired this guy for being a get-the-job-done, practical politician. I don’t think he is any more. He has been sipping too much tea.

I saw the exchanges with Scout earlier and wondered HOW his pension is different than other federal employees?
Oh, it’s different from the federal pensions of workers who started federal service after around 1987—that’s for sure. After Reagan and his pals got through with “reform”, modern workers get a pension equal to 1% of the average annual salary for the three highest-paid years. That means that if you work 40 years, you get a pension equal to about 40% of your departing salary. On the other hand, if you joined up before then and elected to stay on the old plan, your pension could be as much as 80% of your final salary. The Reagan bunch cut the federal pension in half.
If Romney and his supporters want to know why he’s going to lose Virginia, with all those salary-frozen federal workers the Republicans love to shaft, he won’t need to look far for a reason. The only thing the Republicans can’t accomplish is to deprive those federal workers of the right to vote.

Scout’s pension is a true pension in the old school pension setup. Feds hired after 1987 have most of their retirement through the TSP, which is basically a 401k, and social security. We have a small defined part, but Congress keeps trying to chip away at that. We now pay more for less in retirement than Scout and his compadres ever had to.

I find this quote the most egregious:
“Obamacare is really Exhibit No. 1 of the president’s political philosophy, and that is that government knows better than people how to run your lives. It is a view that government should stand between you and your doctor.”
1st: ensuring that all citizens have access to health care, far from standing between them & their doctor, actually facilitates their ability to be standing in front of their doctor at all. Recent Romney statements indicate he actually thinks (now) that people who can’t afford insurance are just fine accessing “health care” thru emergency room visits. Here he ignores both the facts that “emergency care” is NOT health care and that as Governor he demonstrated an understanding of that fact—saying that very thing, actually, while promoting universal health care access in his state.
That he basically deflected an interviewers attempts to reconcile that hypocrisy with the non-answer that each state is different, doesn’t change the facts—and he knows it: emergency room care is NOT health care & is vastly more expensive & less effective, no matter what state you reside in.
2nd: If the Republican Platform (& most especially Paul Ryan) is infamous for any one thing this year (over all the many, many things they should be infamous for!) it is exactly for wanting the kind of mind-numbing control that allows government (via the religious right) to stand between a patient and his or her doctor!
Who is he kidding with that statement? The only thing I can come up with is: himself. He is seriously so desperate to win the election, he can convince himself to believe any of the stuff he feels he must say in the moment that he says it. There are many people like that. It’s a functional inability for retrospection. He cannot examine his own behaviors, actions, or beliefs, because it is simply too costly for him on a mental & an emotional level. The incongruities of his own mind would prove impossible to decipher & he would likely just self-destruct right in front of us… One can hope anyway…

One thing’s pretty clear reading thru this and other posts: the closer we get to the election and the wider the gap in the polls, the more the Romney supporters here are unable to explain, let alone defend Romney. Instead of doing so, they resort to incredibly relevant retorts like, ‘oh yeah, well… what about Obama’s transparency, huh?”
That kind of argument’s not going to convince any independent to vote for Romney. If anything, they’ll think “if that’s the best they can come up with, maybe I’ll just stick with the current occupant of the White House.”
So, thanks again, Romney supporters. Couldn’t do it without you!

Let’s all calm down and face the facts here. Congress has thwarted Obama’s moves to push out of the GOP led Great Recession at every turn. PRESIDENTS ARE NOT DICTATORS. We have a 3 part government, people.
Secondly, Romney is so bad, SO BAD (but better than the other GOP clowns he beat out, if you can imagine that), that Obama is clearly going to win, along with the Dems keeping the Senate. I would guess we gain more seats in the House as Tea Party folks are also on the verge of being knocked off the board, one by one.
So, the economy will turn around, and in Obama’s 2nd term. That leaves a Dem for President (easily) in 2016, along with possibly a Dem Congress.

Frankly Getalife, I personally think we should allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon if they so choose, sounds risky, I know but I’m frankly tired to spending US dollars in countries who could give a flying flip about the US, I say let em have a bomb if they want, let them know if they use it on us or our allies, we literally wipe them from existence, let them know that bombs will fly into every Iranian city and village until there are no buildings left….nothing….

NoCom: So you guys have put up withall the BS because you are patriotic?
It seems that the congress critters are a helluva of a lot less patriotic than you guys.
Well, when we had $75 Billion taken from us in the name of debt reduction during the debt limit negotiations, I guess it was our patriotic duty to help pay down the national debt. That deal ends up making us contribute more to get less of the pension that we will get. At the same time, the same congress has not asked the top 1% or even the top10% to give up $5 more towards paying down the debt.
So, who’s really getting screwed? They keep talking about extending pay freezes, and I have no issues with that if it’s done for ALL government branches to include them too. They want to cut 10% of the workforce because they say we’re bloated. The fed workforce is approximately the same size it was when Reagan left office. I think the fed workforce made up 1% of the national workforce then, and now we represent .5% of the workforce.

“Presidential retirement benefits were non-existent until the enactment of the Former Presidents Act (FPA) in 1958. Since then, presidential retirement benefits have included a lifetime annual pension, staff and office allowances, travel expenses, Secret Service protection and more.
Pension
Former presidents are offered a taxable lifetime pension equal to the annual rate of basic pay for the heads of executive branch departments, like the Cabinet Secretaries. This amount is set annually by Congress and is currently (in 2011) $199,700 per year. The pension starts the minute the president officially leaves office at noon on Inauguration Day. Widows of former presidents are provided with a $20,000 annual lifetime pension and mailing privileges, unless they choose to waive their right to the pension.”

I think that the entire Congress should have their pay cut in half and they shouldn’t have a retirement plan provided by tax payers….whatever happened to the concept of a public servant?
I can’t say I share that sentiment though. I think part of the problem we have with Congress is related to money and no salary adjustment up or down will alleviate those issues. Their retirement plan is the same as any other Fed worker. If they were around before 84-87, then they’re covered under CSRS, otherwise they’re FERS just like me.
If you don’t want them to collect a huge pension, then don’t re-elect them over and over again. Here’s something interesting I found about Congress and their retirement plan.
As of October 1, 2006, 413 retired Members of Congress were receiving federal
pensions based fully or in part on their congressional service. Of this number, 290
had retired under CSRS and were receiving an average annual pension of $60,972.
A total of 123 Members had retired with service under both CSRS and FERS or with
service under FERS only. Their average annual pension was $35,952 in 2006.
http://www.senate.gov/reference/resources/pdf/RL30631.pdf
Those who retire under the current plan get a pension that’s nearly half the amount of those on the old system. You can thank Reagan and his Congress for that one.

Especially just to gain a political advantage or to get votes.
“The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies….Leadership means that ‘the buck stops here.’ Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt and a failure of leadership. America deserves better.”

I used to feel the same way about Tucker when she was around. Every once in a blue moon she would come out with a jewel of a thread on something but the usual was pretty predictable. The seeds of Romneycare lie in Reagan’s passage of the socialist unfunded mandate called EMTALA. The cons just do not get that this created Federal control of how hospitals are funded . Saint Ronnie bypassed the states leaving insurers to pick up the unfunded mandate. It was bankrupting Mass. and many other states . That’s why Romney made a business decision to create Romneycare and get greater funding of hospital care through mandatory insurance and greater federal funding of Medicaid.
So any of the morons who still believe that Obamacare should be left up to individual states should also be asking for repeal of EMTALA so freeloaders do not bankrupt the hospitals. I know this is a hard concept for the Obama haters and Reagan worshipers.
And tell me how individual states are going to bring national health care costs down from 18% of GDP to around 7 or 8% like western countries with true socialized medicine that is fully funded?

Well, there’s lots of people in the international community who are aware and probably think otherwise. When things like this are public knowledge, it’s kinda hard to push the non-support theme.
http://content.usatoday.com/communities/theoval/post/2011/09/report-obama-sells-buster-bunker-bombs-to-israel/1
President Obama secretly agreed to sell Israel 55 bunker-busting bombs, according to a Newsweek report.
Much has been made of Obama’s tense relationship with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The president pressured the Israelis to cease building settlements in the West Bank. And Obama has been accused by Republicans of being hostile to Israel’s security concerns.
With the sale of deep-penetrating bombs called GBU-28 Hard Target Penetrators, Obama is satisfying a weapons request Israel first made during the Bush administration.
Israel’s request for bunker-busters in 2005 was denied. At the time, the Defense Department had frozen most military sales to Israel because of concerns Israel was transferring advanced military technology to China.
Yet another example of that Socialist, Marxist, anti-Colonial Obama acting like a Conservative. If he gets a second term, he’s probably going to end up being a better Republican president than GW Bush ever was.

That’s your opinion I disagree. I do agree the far wing of the republican party is exactly what you said and much of their campaign rhetoric is too.
I think we would disagree that the left has just as many nuts on its edges and they do the same thig only blaming a past administration while dodging all credit for anything negative out of Washington. And I would also say their campaign like the republicans has done the same.

Do you think a good solution for the pension problem would be to immediately end all pensions as a part of the contract with all new hires instead offer higher pay and allow current employees to have the option for the added current pay (or amid contribution system like a 401k) with reduced monthy pension benefits?
I think this would help ease some of the future budget problems that cause some of the issues with forecasts credit ratings. I may be incorrect but I feel the added pay now would be able to be spent or invested as the employees see fit and also allow the state of feds to save money as it seems to me money now would be cheaper than money later with inflation and all.

Oh, Operator !!
“This video of an Obama supporter bragging about having an “Obama phone” has gone viral on the web, but where do these “free cell phones” come from?
The program is called Lifeline, established in 1984 was originally created to subsidize landline phone service for low income Americans, funded by government-collected telecommunication fees, paid by consumers.
In 2008, the program was expanded to support cell phones which quickly escalated the cost of the program. In 2008 the program cost $772 million, but by 2011 it cost $1.6 billion.
A 2011 audit found that 269,000 wireless Lifeline subscribers were receiving free phones and monthly service from two or more carriers. Several websites have been created to promote “free” government cell phones, including the”The Obama Cell Phone” website at Obamaphone.net.
Rep. Tim Griffin R-Ark. has proposed a bill to eliminate federal subsidies for free cell phones and has produced a great YouTube video highlighting the runaway cost of the program. The program has also been highlighted for reform by Senator Claire McCaskill D-Mo.
Pressure to reform the program led the FCC to announce an effort in February to “reduce the potential for fraud while cutting red tape for consumers and providers” by the end of 2013.”

What’s your take on this?
Well, based on their questioning, it doesn’t amount to much.
23. Do you believe all Americans should be required to pay some amount of federal income taxes, even if it is as little as one percent of their income?
Registered Voters Yes 79%: No 19%: Don’t Know 1%
Likely Voters Yes 79%: No 19%: Don’t Know 1%
I wonder how much that would change if the person answering the question were very well knowledgable in the fact that a person’s tax burden goes far beyond federal income taxes.
If the chattering class were not purposefully trying to muddle the argument by focusing only on federal income taxes, then I doubt that the poll results would be the same. Our government is funded by numerous taxes and not just fed income taxes, so to focus on one revenue stream is nothing more than a concerted effort to hide the truth.

There is one problem with the Obama Phone: It doesn’t exist.
Since 2009, there has been an urban myth that Obama created a program to provide free phones to low-income Americans at taxpayer expense. There is, in fact, a government program that will provide low-income people with a free or low cost cell phone. It was started in 2008 under George W. Bush.
The idea of providing low-income individuals with subsidized phone service was originated in the Reagan administration following the break-up of AT&T in 1984. (It was expanded and formalized by the Telecommunications Act of 1996.) The program is paid for by telecommunications companies through an independent non-profit, not through tax revenue.

Nobody ever adds the amount of other taxes he pays. The same way they don’t add other peoples on.
Romney has not released his state return yet. Here’s a link to where I pulled that graph from.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/ezra-klein/wp/2012/09/19/heres-why-the-47-percent-argument-is-an-abuse-of-tax-data/
Read that article and you’ll understand why Romney’s percentage won’t change much when you add the other taxes in as compared with someone in lower income brackets. The lower the income bracket you fall in, the lower your fed tax liability is, and that is by design. The reason it falls that way is because the lower your income level, the more you’re affected by other taxes.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/ezra-klein/files/2012/09/state-local-federal-taxes-income.jpg
Why would you tax the sh*t out of somebody on the fed level when they’re already getting reamed on the state and local level? Conversely, when somebody’s skating by on the state and local level (remember Kerry and his boat parking issue), the progressive structure of the fed income tax ensures that they are not putting the burden on the lower classes. Or at least that’s how it is supposed to work. With all the carve outs and loopholes inserted into our tax code, the upper income people have skewered the system to keep from having to pay.

Now as to those percentages?????
I have my ideas in the direction they should be, but if I knew the answer to that I would not be on this blog I would hope for all of our sake I would be somewhere doing something about it.
But I’m also one of those crazy folks who think we should tax every single monetary transaction that takes place at a small percentage below 0.005 not to be excercised on material goods and or services. Those transactions should be reserved for the state to tax as it sees fit, as the commerce happens within their boarders.

I’ve not been one to blame Romney for how he allocates his finances to avoid taxes. I may not agree with the laws, but previous Congresses and Presidents have enacted them.
Granted people like Romney, Gates, Buffet lobby for those laws, but no one makes them enact them.

Yeah, I knew the difference between avoid and evade, as evade gets you three hots and a cot. I don’t have an issue when people follow the laws, as written, and take full advantage of them.
In Romney’s case, I think I’m beginning to see exactly what I thought would happen if he released his tax returns. He has done nothing illegal, and has simply taken advantage of the laws, as written. His fault lies in the idea that he’s campaigned on giving more tax cuts to the wealthy when they already have legal ways of avoiding more taxes than a tax cut would relieve them of having to pay.
In my opinion, that’s like going into Target and switching the price tags on two things so you can pay the cheaper price with the cashier knowing what you did. On top of that, the cashier then proceeds to give you a discount on your purchase anyway.
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-09-27/romney-i-dig-it-trust-gives-heirs-triple-benefit.html
In January 1999, a trust set up by Mitt Romney for his children and grandchildren reaped a 1,000 percent return on the sale of shares in Internet advertising firm DoubleClick Inc.
If Romney had given the cash directly, he could have owed a gift tax at a rate as high as 55 percent. He avoided gift and estate taxes by using a type of generation-skipping trust known to tax planners by the nickname: “I Dig It.”
The sale of DoubleClick shares received before the company went public, detailed in previously unreported securities filings reviewed by Bloomberg News, sheds new light on Romney’s estate planning — the art of leaving assets for heirs while avoiding taxes. The Republican presidential candidate used a trust considered one of the most effective techniques for the wealthy to bypass estate and gift taxes. The Obama administration proposed cracking down on the tax benefits in February.
While Romney’s tax avoidance is both legal and common among high-net-worth individuals, it has become increasingly awkward for his candidacy since the disclosure of his remarks at a May fundraiser. He said that the nearly one-half of Americans who pay no income taxes are “dependent upon government” and “believe that they are victims.”

Yeah I’m a Romney guy (after being an Obama guy)
Based in how both governed. I saw Romney as better able to allow others to compromise and compromise himself in his time as gov.
I understand many do not share that position but I was burned by Obama changing Washington during the ‘08 campaign only to see him do the same partisan things as the republicans did.
Not going to happen as I would like to see (R) in wh with dems controlling both.
Again I may be totally wrong but I feel with that equation more would get done to improve our lives and our opportunities to become successful or more successful.
I see more “Blue Dog” Dems that would be willing to compromise while not letting repubs to overboard.
While I’m afraid I cannot say enough of those types exist in the current republican party.
But to me our current state of stale-mate thru partisianship should make us all blush a lil to the rest of the world.

Gotcha. I’m with you in that I wish I knew the answer. Personally, I think we fail from the time we decide to treat income different because of where it comes from. If you’re going to tax income, then tax it all the same. We tax purchases that way, so why should income be any different?

Exactly.
A few yrs ago when Herman Cain was filling in for Boortz, I heard him touting his fair tax.
Of course there is no tax on investments. A guy calls in and asks Herman how much based on his current earnings does he stand to gain? Herman is backpedaling and ask why was that relevant. The guys says well based on statistics, after a certain income level, people on average are not using that money for mortgage payments, cars, food, etc…… but for investments to a large degree.
Herman didn’t dispute the man, but said “so”. The guy said, where is the break for the average Joe. Herman went off on him and called him jealous and envious of those with money and hung up………
Told me all I need to know.

I’m sure you still understand the analogy. Legal cheating is still cheating. When it’s time to atone for all you’ve done while here on Earth, there are a few people who I hope not to be the next person in line. Until the wife started doing taxes w/Turbo tax, I never itemized anything. The way I see it, taxes have to be paid to keep this country going. We’ve accumulated debt over the course of 200 years, and to expect it to be paid off in 5-10 years is foolish.
I’ve gotten myself into deep debt before, and I got myself out of it. I did it by the same way I think the country can do it. Cutting spending and increasing revenues.

The Republican Party of Florida’s top recipient of 2012 expenditures, a firm by the name of Strategic Allied Consulting, was just fired on Tuesday night, after more than 100 apparently fraudulent voter registration forms were discovered to have been turned in by the group to the Palm Beach County, FL Supervisor of Elections.
The firm appears to be another shell company of Nathan Sproul, a longtime, notorious Republican operative, hired year after year by GOP Presidential campaigns, despite being accused of shredding Democratic voter registration forms in a number of states over several past elections.

I used to make a lot of public speeches (civic groups, etc.) in my prior career and I would sometimes take a display of $20 bills. I think there were about ten in the display.
They ALL looked good (although a few were more worn or older than others). The fun part was asking those in attendance to come up afterwards and pick out the one genuine note vs. all the other counterfeit ones.
Few could ever do it because the genuine note was older, more used, faded, etc. All of the counterfeits were new or newer and “looked” great.
However, even though all were displayed as “U.S. Currency” only one was engraved and printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing on genuine paper made by Crane Paper Company in Dalton, Mass. and therefore it was the only one worth “full face and value”.

But just in case they are right that a higher tax rate on investments would slow investments, then I think an appropriate compromise is the tax on all monetary transactions.

He had his chance ………. God help us if he gets another:
“Americans must be wondering how much more of this “recovery” they can afford. New figures from the Census Bureau’s Current Population Survey, compiled by Sentier Research, show that the typical American household’s real (inflation-adjusted) income has actually dropped 5.7 percent during the Obama “recovery.” Using constant 2012 dollars (to adjust for inflation), the median annual income of American households was $53,718 as of June 2009, the last month of the recession. Now, after 38 months of this “recovery,” it has fallen to $50,678 — a drop of $3,040 per household.
Yet it gets worse. Amazingly, incomes have dropped even more during the “recovery” than they did during the recession. In fact, they’ve dropped more than twice as much as they did during the recession. From the start to the end of the recession, the real median income of American households fell $1,413, or 2.6 percent. From the end of the recession to the present day, it has dropped $3,040, or 5.7 percent. This begs the question: What kind of “recovery” compares unfavorably with the recession from which it’s ostensibly recovering?”

I think that ship has sailed. The only way things will change is if the Democrats happen to recapture many of the states when the 2020 census hits. If not, the GOP will continue to try to draw districts that are favorable to them to solidify their power.
If it were up to me, I’d do away with letting the politicians do the redistricting. I’m sure it could be done by computer to divide up the population equally and avoid creating all those stupid looking districts. Personally, I think we’d be better off as a country if every House district were drawn up to be 50/50. When you represent a district that’s overwhelmingly filled by one political leaning, I think you tend to lose touch with the issues from the other side.

The libs on this blog are so in the tank for Obama, they will accept any level of deception by this administration….. Jay Bookman even more so………..
Obama is a Charlatan who panders, lies, covers up, promises and lastly fails at keeping the most important campaign promises from 2008…….Transparency, Bipartisanship (see Bob Woodwards book before responding to this)and changing how things get done in D.C. All the other promises would have been attainable, if these promises were kept.
They weren’t and Obama could care…. All he wants is another 4 years and it does not matter to him One bit how he keeps power…….As long as he does…. If Obama will stoop to covering up circumstances surrounding an Ambassadors assasination, what else is he capable of and who in the diplomatic corps. could believe anything he says…….?
Sorry but Obama brings shame to the office of POTUS and you people look the other way…….. Worse yet rich supporters like that Clown Samuel L. Jackson produce ignorant foul mouthed videos….. What is he worth $100M + Wonder how much he gave to charity last year???? Bet was not $4M like Romney……..
I will say it again…. President Obama has no respect for the office he holds or the protocols of that office…. He talks a good game until you really investigate the details as Bob Woodward has done…..

anyway, what looks to these eyes to be a sober look at what the banks are really up to / have been up to with their reporting, on that score.
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/28/business/the-myth-of-fixing-the-libor-high-low-finance.html?google_editors_picks=true&_r=0
In his testimony, Mr. Gensler noted that a competing indicator, known as Euribor, consistently came up with higher rates than Libor. In the middle of this week, the three-month United States dollar Libor rate was 0.36 percent. The similar Euribor rate was 0.61 percent.
Perhaps that can be explained by the Lake Wobegon effect, after the mythical town invented by Garrison Keillor in which all the children are above average. Libor asks each bank to give the rate at which it could borrow. Euribor, administered by the European Banking Federation, asks banks to give the rate at which they think the average bank could borrow.
These days neither number is based on real transactions, since there is virtually no interbank unsecured lending. Perhaps every bank believes it is above average.

I’m shocked, shocked, that someone in the corporate media actually asks the question posed in the headline.
I wasn’t sure most Americans even thought of Iranians as human, but who knows. Maybe we’re not quite the psychopaths I thought…
http://world.time.com/2012/09/27/how-many-civilians-would-be-killed-in-an-attack-on-irans-nuclear-sites/
While Iranians are increasingly fretful of an imminent attack, they remain broadly unaware of just how devastating the human impact could be. Even a conservative strike on a handful of Iran’s nuclear facilities, a recent report predicts, could kill or injure 5,000 to 80,000 people. The Ayatollah’s Nuclear Gamble, a report written by an Iranian-American scientist with expertise in industrial nuclear-waste management, notes that a number of Iran’s sites are located directly atop or near major civilian centers. One key site that would almost certainly be targeted in a bombing campaign, the uranium-conversion facility at Isfahan, houses 371 metric tons of uranium hexafluoride and is located on the city’s doorstep; toxic plumes released from a strike would reach the city center within an hour, killing as many as 70,000 and exposing over 300,000 to radioactive fallout. These plumes would “destroy their lungs, blind them, severely burn their skin and damage other tissues and vital organs.” The report’s predictions for long-term toxicity and fatalities are equally stark. “The numbers are alarming,” says Khosrow Semnani, the report’s author, “we’re talking about a catastrophe in the same class as Bhopal and Chernobyl.”
But hey, you can’t make an omlette without breaking a few eggs, right?

Well no, it isn’t. The solution this Administration proposes, as I understand it, is to incrementally steer this nation toward a more rational tax code and negotiate some kind of spending cuts over time.
As for how we got into this mess, I think it’s completely reasonable to affix blame where it belongs. You don’t have to listen if you don’t want–on a certain level it’s not terribly important anyway, since what’s done is done.

Of course that’s a reasonable question to ask, and it’s something that (I’m sure) defense geeks have already modeled.
of course, they don’t actually have the means to launch such an attack, whereas we blithely discuss the desireability of the US or Israel taking out the nuclear capability with a bombing raid like it’s only a little messier than your kid’s Pixie Sticks in the back seat.
Of course our president wouldn’t call it terrorism as he has a hard time saying those words.

Stands ” since what’s done is done” – on that we’re in agreement and fixing blame does not solve issues. Unfortunately I haven’t seen anything like the plan you cite above. The only thing I’ve seen consistantly cited by this president is repeal the high end of the “tax cuts” (his tax policy which would have an infitessimal impact on the deficit) and subsidize local government employees (his job plan which would add to the deficit for something that local governments are in control of) and there has been no movement on spending while passing a massive healthcare reform bill where nobody fully understands the true cost implications of it (I believe by design since he defferred much of it until after this election and some until the next).

I’ve really got to run, but Madmax–
That is a big assumption and with the nut case running that country, what if we get it wrong.
two things:
1) it may sound nitpicky, but there isn’t a “nut case” running Iran–their president is a mere figurehead, doing what an unelected theocratic committee more or less tells him to do. He couldn’t single-handedly order an attack on Israel; his military would laugh at him if he tried, I believe.
2) I do think there’s lunacy aplenty in the Iranian regime, but I seriously doubt they are so batcrap crazy that they would do what (say) Pakistan never has done with similar capabilities.
Of course you have to plan for unexpected events, and if the Iranians do procure or develop this offensive capability within the next few years, it will just be another problem to manage.
I respectfully submit that per-emptively bombing the crap out of their production facilities isn’t justifiable for a variety of reasons, and I’ll have to leave it at that for now.

@ Stands & Tiredofit……….. When Romney is in a comparrison with Obama, its not even close who has been more genuine and responsible for their actions…….Romney by a landslide…
You people want to blame Bush for everything but conveniently neglect to mention that Democrats ran Congress for the last 2 years of his presidency (You don’t think that had something to do with the financial collapse?). You neglect to mention he wanted action on banking (Freddie & Fannie) reform as early as 2002…Got no help from Democrats who looked at him focusing on this as a Repub v. Dem thing rather than a cautionary tale of what was to come if the Fed did nothing……..
Yes he started 2 wars (One of which I did not agree with), but tell me a President who does everything exactley as you want? Certainly its not Obama…….Though he promised everything under the sun in 2008….He failed to deliver anything of substance when he had his Congressional “Supermajority” for the first 2 years of his term…Then the only time he moved on anything is when it moved the needle politically, not because it was the right thing to do……….. Is this what you call “genuine”???? Please………
Romney is not perfect, but compared to Obama, he is considerably more genuine and tells it more like it actually is, then pandering to what the group in front of him wants to hear……… He does not speak as well as Obama, but he doesn’t need a teleprompter as much either….
Romney/Ryan 2012… The considerably more “genuine” choice… Time for the cover ups, smears and the “Campaigner in Chief” to go….

Re: “The real Obama: College records sealed, birth certificate sealed,”
Obama’s college records are no more “sealed” than Mitt Romney’s records. Mitt has not shown his college records either. Neither are “sealed;’ both are simply private, protected by state and federal privacy laws. Either or both could chose to release those records. So far neither of them have.
Obama’s birth certificate is not “sealed’ either. He has showed both the short form and the long form birth certificate from Hawaii, and the officials in Hawaii have confirmed the facts on them repeatedly, and they are further confirmed by the public Index Data file and by the fact that the DOH (and only the DOH could) sent birth notices out for Obama to the “Health Bureau Statistics” sections of the Hawaii newspapers in 1961.
