The core problem with Mitt Romney is, well, his core. As in he apparently doesn’t have one. This is a man who can say the following in an interview yesterday with NBC’s Ron Allen, when asked about his lack of empathy …
—————
“Don’t forget, I got everybody in my state insured. One hundred percent of the kids in our state had health insurance. I don’t think there’s anything that shows more empathy and care about the people of this country than that kind of record.”
—————
…. and then literally a few minutes later stand in front of a crowd and say this:
—————
“I will repeal Obamacare and replace it with real health care reform. You see, Obamacare is really Exhibit No. 1 of the president’s political philosophy, and that is that government knows better than people how to run your lives. It is a view that government should stand between you and your doctor. I don’t believe in a bigger and bigger government…I believe in freedom.”
—————
I think that’s remarkable. If creating such a system is evidence of empathy, what does it say about a person who seeks to dismantle such a system? How can a person go from one statement to another without an apparent hitch, and seemingly with equal sincerity? Which statement reflects the “true” Romney?
I do not know. I am baffled by the man. In fact, given such statements, the more pertinent question may be: Can a “true” Romney even be said to exist?

The only interesting aspect of this election now is whether Flip even gets 200 electoral college votes or not.
Washington (CNN) – If it wasn’t already clear that Mitt Romney and his allies are trying to lower expectations heading into next Wednesday’s debate against President Obama in Denver, the campaign is now making it official.
In a memo about the debates distributed to campaign surrogates and provided to CNN on Thursday, longtime Romney adviser Beth Myers outlines a series of reasons why the president is likely to emerge as the winner of the first debate.

As one who worked for IRS-CID for three years, I’m glad you used “avoid” vs. “evade”. The first one is very smart and every American should take advantage of legal avoidance. I do starting with my itemized deductions, dependants, etc., etc.

I was just tryin to explain where the argument comes from.
My opinion we should eliminate any and all deductions and loop holes. Allow the percentage shown to be the percentage paid.
Now as to those percentages?????
I have my ideas in the direction they should be, but if I knew the answer to that I would not be on this blog I would hope for all of our sake I would be somewhere doing something about it.
But I’m also one of those crazy folks who think we should tax every single monetary transaction that takes place at a small percentage below 0.005 not to be excercised on material goods and or services. Those transactions should be reserved for the state to tax as it sees fit, as the commerce happens within their boarders.

Didn’t see it. Will go back and check it out.
I’ve not been one to blame Romney for how he allocates his finances to avoid taxes. I may not agree with the laws, but previous Congresses and Presidents have enacted them.
Granted people like Romney, Gates, Buffet lobby for those laws, but no one makes them enact them.

Yeah, I knew the difference between avoid and evade, as evade gets you three hots and a cot. I don’t have an issue when people follow the laws, as written, and take full advantage of them.
In Romney’s case, I think I’m beginning to see exactly what I thought would happen if he released his tax returns. He has done nothing illegal, and has simply taken advantage of the laws, as written. His fault lies in the idea that he’s campaigned on giving more tax cuts to the wealthy when they already have legal ways of avoiding more taxes than a tax cut would relieve them of having to pay.
In my opinion, that’s like going into Target and switching the price tags on two things so you can pay the cheaper price with the cashier knowing what you did. On top of that, the cashier then proceeds to give you a discount on your purchase anyway.
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-09-27/romney-i-dig-it-trust-gives-heirs-triple-benefit.html
In January 1999, a trust set up by Mitt Romney for his children and grandchildren reaped a 1,000 percent return on the sale of shares in Internet advertising firm DoubleClick Inc.
If Romney had given the cash directly, he could have owed a gift tax at a rate as high as 55 percent. He avoided gift and estate taxes by using a type of generation-skipping trust known to tax planners by the nickname: “I Dig It.”
The sale of DoubleClick shares received before the company went public, detailed in previously unreported securities filings reviewed by Bloomberg News, sheds new light on Romney’s estate planning — the art of leaving assets for heirs while avoiding taxes. The Republican presidential candidate used a trust considered one of the most effective techniques for the wealthy to bypass estate and gift taxes. The Obama administration proposed cracking down on the tax benefits in February.
While Romney’s tax avoidance is both legal and common among high-net-worth individuals, it has become increasingly awkward for his candidacy since the disclosure of his remarks at a May fundraiser. He said that the nearly one-half of Americans who pay no income taxes are “dependent upon government” and “believe that they are victims.”

Yeah I’m a Romney guy (after being an Obama guy)
Based in how both governed. I saw Romney as better able to allow others to compromise and compromise himself in his time as gov.
I understand many do not share that position but I was burned by Obama changing Washington during the ‘08 campaign only to see him do the same partisan things as the republicans did.
Not going to happen as I would like to see (R) in wh with dems controlling both.
Again I may be totally wrong but I feel with that equation more would get done to improve our lives and our opportunities to become successful or more successful.
I see more “Blue Dog” Dems that would be willing to compromise while not letting repubs to overboard.
While I’m afraid I cannot say enough of those types exist in the current republican party.
But to me our current state of stale-mate thru partisianship should make us all blush a lil to the rest of the world.

Gotcha. I’m with you in that I wish I knew the answer. Personally, I think we fail from the time we decide to treat income different because of where it comes from. If you’re going to tax income, then tax it all the same. We tax purchases that way, so why should income be any different?

Exactly.
A few yrs ago when Herman Cain was filling in for Boortz, I heard him touting his fair tax.
Of course there is no tax on investments. A guy calls in and asks Herman how much based on his current earnings does he stand to gain? Herman is backpedaling and ask why was that relevant. The guys says well based on statistics, after a certain income level, people on average are not using that money for mortgage payments, cars, food, etc…… but for investments to a large degree.
Herman didn’t dispute the man, but said “so”. The guy said, where is the break for the average Joe. Herman went off on him and called him jealous and envious of those with money and hung up………

I’m sure you still understand the analogy. Legal cheating is still cheating. When it’s time to atone for all you’ve done while here on Earth, there are a few people who I hope not to be the next person in line. Until the wife started doing taxes w/Turbo tax, I never itemized anything. The way I see it, taxes have to be paid to keep this country going. We’ve accumulated debt over the course of 200 years, and to expect it to be paid off in 5-10 years is foolish.
I’ve gotten myself into deep debt before, and I got myself out of it. I did it by the same way I think the country can do it. Cutting spending and increasing revenues.

The Republican Party of Florida’s top recipient of 2012 expenditures, a firm by the name of Strategic Allied Consulting, was just fired on Tuesday night, after more than 100 apparently fraudulent voter registration forms were discovered to have been turned in by the group to the Palm Beach County, FL Supervisor of Elections.
The firm appears to be another shell company of Nathan Sproul, a longtime, notorious Republican operative, hired year after year by GOP Presidential campaigns, despite being accused of shredding Democratic voter registration forms in a number of states over several past elections.

I used to make a lot of public speeches (civic groups, etc.) in my prior career and I would sometimes take a display of $20 bills. I think there were about ten in the display.
They ALL looked good (although a few were more worn or older than others). The fun part was asking those in attendance to come up afterwards and pick out the one genuine note vs. all the other counterfeit ones.
Few could ever do it because the genuine note was older, more used, faded, etc. All of the counterfeits were new or newer and “looked” great.
However, even though all were displayed as “U.S. Currency” only one was engraved and printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing on genuine paper made by Crane Paper Company in Dalton, Mass. and therefore it was the only one worth “full face and value”.

I agree about taxing it differently.
But just in case they are right that a higher tax rate on investments would slow investments, then I think an appropriate compromise is the tax on all monetary transactions.
Being less than 1/2 a penny on the dollar will not be noticed per investment but the combined effect of all the transactions would be noticed!

He had his chance ………. God help us if he gets another:
“Americans must be wondering how much more of this “recovery” they can afford. New figures from the Census Bureau’s Current Population Survey, compiled by Sentier Research, show that the typical American household’s real (inflation-adjusted) income has actually dropped 5.7 percent during the Obama “recovery.” Using constant 2012 dollars (to adjust for inflation), the median annual income of American households was $53,718 as of June 2009, the last month of the recession. Now, after 38 months of this “recovery,” it has fallen to $50,678 — a drop of $3,040 per household.
Yet it gets worse. Amazingly, incomes have dropped even more during the “recovery” than they did during the recession. In fact, they’ve dropped more than twice as much as they did during the recession. From the start to the end of the recession, the real median income of American households fell $1,413, or 2.6 percent. From the end of the recession to the present day, it has dropped $3,040, or 5.7 percent. This begs the question: What kind of “recovery” compares unfavorably with the recession from which it’s ostensibly recovering?”

I think that ship has sailed. The only way things will change is if the Democrats happen to recapture many of the states when the 2020 census hits. If not, the GOP will continue to try to draw districts that are favorable to them to solidify their power.
If it were up to me, I’d do away with letting the politicians do the redistricting. I’m sure it could be done by computer to divide up the population equally and avoid creating all those stupid looking districts. Personally, I think we’d be better off as a country if every House district were drawn up to be 50/50. When you represent a district that’s overwhelmingly filled by one political leaning, I think you tend to lose touch with the issues from the other side.
That’s what separated Blue Dogs and Moderate Republicans from their other colleagues. They had their ears tuned in to both sides of the debate.

I believe you have the head in the sand syndrom. Or else the looking through binders. Both of those are disorders that are hard to overcome. Good luck.

The libs on this blog are so in the tank for Obama, they will accept any level of deception by this administration….. Jay Bookman even more so………..
Obama is a Charlatan who panders, lies, covers up, promises and lastly fails at keeping the most important campaign promises from 2008…….Transparency, Bipartisanship (see Bob Woodwards book before responding to this)and changing how things get done in D.C. All the other promises would have been attainable, if these promises were kept.
They weren’t and Obama could care…. All he wants is another 4 years and it does not matter to him One bit how he keeps power…….As long as he does…. If Obama will stoop to covering up circumstances surrounding an Ambassadors assasination, what else is he capable of and who in the diplomatic corps. could believe anything he says…….?
Sorry but Obama brings shame to the office of POTUS and you people look the other way…….. Worse yet rich supporters like that Clown Samuel L. Jackson produce ignorant foul mouthed videos….. What is he worth $100M + Wonder how much he gave to charity last year???? Bet was not $4M like Romney……..
I will say it again…. President Obama has no respect for the office he holds or the protocols of that office…. He talks a good game until you really investigate the details as Bob Woodward has done…..
Romney/Ryan 2012 Because we don’t need a hip/cool Campaigner in Chief…. We need a genuine hard working President for all Americans…

mornin’.
Remember the Libor fixing scandal? (Of course you don’t.)
anyway, what looks to these eyes to be a sober look at what the banks are really up to / have been up to with their reporting, on that score.
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/28/business/the-myth-of-fixing-the-libor-high-low-finance.html?google_editors_picks=true&_r=0
In his testimony, Mr. Gensler noted that a competing indicator, known as Euribor, consistently came up with higher rates than Libor. In the middle of this week, the three-month United States dollar Libor rate was 0.36 percent. The similar Euribor rate was 0.61 percent.
Perhaps that can be explained by the Lake Wobegon effect, after the mythical town invented by Garrison Keillor in which all the children are above average. Libor asks each bank to give the rate at which it could borrow. Euribor, administered by the European Banking Federation, asks banks to give the rate at which they think the average bank could borrow.
These days neither number is based on real transactions, since there is virtually no interbank unsecured lending. Perhaps every bank believes it is above average.

You’re awake and almost lucid. Those words I posted about Obama saying he was only responsible for only 10 % of the country’s debt came from Obama himself. That’s BS, he’s the President. He’s responible for 100%.

Why do you have to lie? If Obama is so bad the truth would be enough.

Note to the MSM : Too bad youse guys didn’t focus as much attention as to doubting the ability of B Ho to lead a nation. Had you done so, we might have saved about 7 trillion dollars of additional debt, jobs, etc. I guess those with drive and ability that actually paid for an education did something meaningful with their lives instead of taking Barnum and Bailey journalist classes. None of you measure up to Sam Adams. None. The majority of Americans will not be bought off with blankets and trinkets, or digging through Obama’s stash of cash…

Fred – Who’s president? The president is responsible, doesn’t matter what he inherited, he is responsible for $16.065 trillion of it. It has gone up about 60% under his watch. He promised to lower it and he hasn’t delivered.

…because the Economic Fairy would’ve automagically wiped away existing obligations and found a new revenue stream under a Gramps/BibleSpice administration? Is that how the 7 trillion of accumulated debt goes away if you somehow prevent this all-powerful MSM from getting Obama elected in 2008?
How apparent adults can regurgitate such literally fantastic nonsense is truly mind-boggling at times.
