Seeking the “true” Romney is like seeking Bigfoot

Mitt Romney AP-1
romneydown

The core problem with Mitt Romney is, well, his core. As in he apparently doesn’t have one. This is a man who can say the following in an interview yesterday with NBC’s Ron Allen, when asked about his lack of empathy …
—————

“Don’t forget, I got everybody in my state insured. One hundred percent of the kids in our state had health insurance. I don’t think there’s anything that shows more empathy and care about the people of this country than that kind of record.”

—————

…. and then literally a few minutes later stand in front of a crowd and say this:

—————

“I will repeal Obamacare and replace it with real health care reform. You see, Obamacare is really Exhibit No. 1 of the president’s political philosophy, and that is that government knows better than people how to run your lives. It is a view that government should stand between you and your doctor. I don’t believe in a bigger and bigger government…I believe in freedom.”
—————

I think that’s remarkable. If creating such a system is evidence of empathy, what does it say about a person who seeks to dismantle such a system? How can a person go from one statement to another without an apparent hitch, and seemingly with equal sincerity? Which statement reflects the “true” Romney?

I do not know. I am baffled by the man. In fact, given such statements, the more pertinent question may be: Can a “true” Romney even be said to exist?

To be honest; it is sort of sad to see the lack of reality that comes across at times.

We can all debate and argue political ideology, but then you have sad commentary and willingness to believe anything that bolsters one’s ideology regardless of the facts.

I saw the exchanges with Scout earlier and wondered HOW his pension is different than other federal employees?

Oh, it’s different from the federal pensions of workers who started federal service after around 1987—that’s for sure. After Reagan and his pals got through with “reform”, modern workers get a pension equal to 1% of the average annual salary for the three highest-paid years. That means that if you work 40 years, you get a pension equal to about 40% of your departing salary. On the other hand, if you joined up before then and elected to stay on the old plan, your pension could be as much as 80% of your final salary. The Reagan bunch cut the federal pension in half.

If Romney and his supporters want to know why he’s going to lose Virginia, with all those salary-frozen federal workers the Republicans love to shaft, he won’t need to look far for a reason. The only thing the Republicans can’t accomplish is to deprive those federal workers of the right to vote.

Scout’s pension is a true pension in the old school pension setup. Feds hired after 1987 have most of their retirement through the TSP, which is basically a 401k, and social security. We have a small defined part, but Congress keeps trying to chip away at that. We now pay more for less in retirement than Scout and his compadres ever had to.

I find this quote the most egregious:
“Obamacare is really Exhibit No. 1 of the president’s political philosophy, and that is that government knows better than people how to run your lives. It is a view that government should stand between you and your doctor.”

1st: ensuring that all citizens have access to health care, far from standing between them & their doctor, actually facilitates their ability to be standing in front of their doctor at all. Recent Romney statements indicate he actually thinks (now) that people who can’t afford insurance are just fine accessing “health care” thru emergency room visits. Here he ignores both the facts that “emergency care” is NOT health care and that as Governor he demonstrated an understanding of that fact—saying that very thing, actually, while promoting universal health care access in his state.

That he basically deflected an interviewers attempts to reconcile that hypocrisy with the non-answer that each state is different, doesn’t change the facts—and he knows it: emergency room care is NOT health care & is vastly more expensive & less effective, no matter what state you reside in.

2nd: If the Republican Platform (& most especially Paul Ryan) is infamous for any one thing this year (over all the many, many things they should be infamous for!) it is exactly for wanting the kind of mind-numbing control that allows government (via the religious right) to stand between a patient and his or her doctor!

Who is he kidding with that statement? The only thing I can come up with is: himself. He is seriously so desperate to win the election, he can convince himself to believe any of the stuff he feels he must say in the moment that he says it. There are many people like that. It’s a functional inability for retrospection. He cannot examine his own behaviors, actions, or beliefs, because it is simply too costly for him on a mental & an emotional level. The incongruities of his own mind would prove impossible to decipher & he would likely just self-destruct right in front of us… One can hope anyway…

One thing’s pretty clear reading thru this and other posts: the closer we get to the election and the wider the gap in the polls, the more the Romney supporters here are unable to explain, let alone defend Romney. Instead of doing so, they resort to incredibly relevant retorts like, ‘oh yeah, well… what about Obama’s transparency, huh?”

That kind of argument’s not going to convince any independent to vote for Romney. If anything, they’ll think “if that’s the best they can come up with, maybe I’ll just stick with the current occupant of the White House.”

So, thanks again, Romney supporters. Couldn’t do it without you!

Let’s all calm down and face the facts here. Congress has thwarted Obama’s moves to push out of the GOP led Great Recession at every turn. PRESIDENTS ARE NOT DICTATORS. We have a 3 part government, people.

Secondly, Romney is so bad, SO BAD (but better than the other GOP clowns he beat out, if you can imagine that), that Obama is clearly going to win, along with the Dems keeping the Senate. I would guess we gain more seats in the House as Tea Party folks are also on the verge of being knocked off the board, one by one.

So, the economy will turn around, and in Obama’s 2nd term. That leaves a Dem for President (easily) in 2016, along with possibly a Dem Congress.

It seems that the congress critters are a helluva of a lot less patriotic than you guys.

Well, when we had $75 Billion taken from us in the name of debt reduction during the debt limit negotiations, I guess it was our patriotic duty to help pay down the national debt. That deal ends up making us contribute more to get less of the pension that we will get. At the same time, the same congress has not asked the top 1% or even the top10% to give up $5 more towards paying down the debt.

So, who’s really getting screwed? They keep talking about extending pay freezes, and I have no issues with that if it’s done for ALL government branches to include them too. They want to cut 10% of the workforce because they say we’re bloated. The fed workforce is approximately the same size it was when Reagan left office. “There is a great opportunity for them (Israel) to help Syria refugees because Turkey. closed the door and they are getting no help”

That is a creative and original idea, getalife. I would be very interested to see the world reaction to that.

Pleasant evening, all -

I can’t believe anyone doesn’t believe there are far left politicans and millionaires out there…..what about that Sanders guy from Vermont, isn’t he a registered socialist? And in my definition, anyone who believes it’s gov’ts job to support people from cradle to grave in my mind is socialist, there is a diffence in providing a national defense for people, roads/bridges/ infrastructure, education and then doing beyond that by giving food subsidies, child care subsidies, control the student loan industry, have a heavy hand in the health insurance industry, giving housing to people, cell phones, electric and gas power subsidies.

Look, I get helping a person when he’s down, what I don’t get is creating policies that allow the same guy (if able to help himself) to maintain his sustanence with most of his income and provision from the Federal gov’t….

Brosephus, I’m with you there….I think that the entire Congress should have their pay cut in half and they shouldn’t have a retirement plan provided by tax payers….whatever happened to the concept of a public servant?

Seeking the “truth”:

This will be interesting to be sure ………………………

“Mitt Romney plans to turn himself into a one-man truth squad during the first presidential debate next week, casting President Barack Obama as someone who can’t be trusted to stick to the facts or keep his promises.”

How about this after only four (or eight) years of work ???

“Presidential retirement benefits were non-existent until the enactment of the Former Presidents Act (FPA) in 1958. Since then, presidential retirement benefits have included a lifetime annual pension, staff and office allowances, travel expenses, Secret Service protection and more.

Pension
Former presidents are offered a taxable lifetime pension equal to the annual rate of basic pay for the heads of executive branch departments, like the Cabinet Secretaries. This amount is set annually by Congress and is currently (in 2011) $199,700 per year. The pension starts the minute the president officially leaves office at noon on Inauguration Day. Widows of former presidents are provided with a $20,000 annual lifetime pension and mailing privileges, unless they choose to waive their right to the pension.”

I agree with you on the cut in congressional pay…I don’t on the retirement plan. And that one on the concept of public service, imeoiauo, lies at the heart of the problem…

No problem. It’s easy to disagree and not be disagreeable. I wouldn’t protect you any less than I’d protect anybody else in this country.

PS, I’m a sane family man with 3 degrees, 3 kids and a nice home. It is sad that for the first time in my life, I keep more than 20,000 rounds of ammo in the house, food&water for 6 for 12 months, my airplane (yes i’m a pilot) pre-loaded with flight plans to bahamas, belize and st. maarten. You are all scoffing but please, please have a look at what is happening in Greece, Italy, Portugal and France on and off. We are walking into the same buzzsaw. I want all of you to remember reading this when there is no money left to pay the police, when there is no money left to pay for food stamps and gas is $16/gallon. Couple that with inflation expected to rise by 20% in a decade, and you have food riots and panic. I will be elsewhere, armed to the teeth, stocked with food, praying for all of you.

Can a “true” Romney even be said to exist?

The true Romney comes out after the cameras/mics are turned off.

Mitt’s too old to be deciding what his beliefs are going to be when he grows up. Then again, another viable reason for Mitt’s constantly changing views is that he is so old that dimentia, or worse, has set in.

Economic patriotism- Obama’s talking point of the day.

This is from a man, who said GWB was irresponsible and unpatriotic for running up 5 Trillion dollars of debt in his eight years.

By his own definition, that makes him a narcissistic, hypocritical, irresponsible, unpatriotic failure. It could get worse, however.

The Mormon and the Muslim, they’re both obviously good guys and savvy politicians. The incumbent is a Utopian dreamer who envisions Americans genuflecting toward Washington DC, and the challenger sees the government answering to the people, not the other way around. Anyway I like ‘em both, may the best man win.
