Two significantly revised economic statistics are out, which the two presidential campaigns will no doubt attempt to spin to their candidates’ advantage. But the net political effect is likely to be minimal.
First, the bad news. Economic growth in the second quarter, originally estimated at an anemic 1.7 percent of GDP, was actually an even more anemic 1.3 percent, the Commerce Department announced. As Reuters notes, that downward revision reflects a better understanding of the impact of “the worst drought in half a century, which gripped large parts of the country in the summer (and) saw farm inventories dropping $5.3 billion in the second quarter.”
(In that same announcement, the WSJ’s MarketWatch notes, “the government said corporate profits climbed $21.8 billion in the second quarter, compared to a prior estimate of a $10.4 million increase.”)
The better news comes out of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which released its regularly scheduled revision of job creation numbers. According to the BLS, the economy created 453,000 more private-sector jobs than reported in the April 2011-March 2012 period. It also lost 67,000 more government jobs that reported, producing a net unreported job growth of 386,000 over previous estimates.
That’s an average of an unreported 30,000 jobs a month over that 12-month period. In political terms, the Obama campaign can now claim that more Americans are working today than when the president took office.
But again, this is hardly earth-shaking news, and combined with the GDP revision, it suggests that this long, hard slog to a better economy is likely to continue a while.

Oh well, at least in the grand scheme of things, Obama’s left leaning media proletariat are winning the “We the People” with their dazzling spinning and lying about Obama’s birth place (Kenya).
On the other hand, Romney, that paragon of virtue, is winning the “We the Dumb, Stubborn, Git Yor Hands Off My MEDICARE!!, This Guns-a-smoking People” with his dazzling spinning and lying about Obama’s numbers, HIS numbers, His view of the 47%, his assertion that it was HIS idea to save the auto industry, and on and on and on.

The loss of government jobs over the course of our recovery, primarily at the state and local levels, is the real story behind the drag on our recover–
“Putting our four components together—the jobs lost in the public sector, the jobs the public sector should have gained just to keep up with population growth, the jobs lost in the private sector due to direct public-sector job declines, and the jobs likely lost when state spending cutbacks on transfer programs were made—we find that if it weren’t for state and local austerity, the labor market would have 2.3 million more jobs today; half of these jobs would be in the private sector.
This is more than one-fifth of our 9.8 million “jobs gap,” the number of jobs needed to bring the economy back to full employment. If all of these 2.3 million jobs had been filled, it is likely that the unemployment rate would now be between 6.7 percent and 7.5 percent instead of 8.2 percent, and the labor force participation rate (which has dropped dramatically in recent years due to weak job opportunities) would be up to three-tenths of a percentage point higher than it is.”

Jay,
You are correct, these numbers are minor variations in the overall trend. But I’m sure we’re going to hear the wailing and gnashing of teeth from the Right on this. It only shows that if Congress would have gotten off its backside over the last two years and really did do something about jobs (instead of abortion) then things might be incrementally better. But I forget that we can’t have cooperation from a Republican House. //snarc//

Couldn’t agree more..do you think the WH can really do much beyond spending more of our cash (with dismal results)? I just don’t see anyone reversing these trends except time….many are suggesting if trends since great depression continue, it will take at least 10 years for any meaningful job recovery…we can’t make corporations spend more of profits without generating a return..

http://www.usatoday.com/news/opinion/forum/story/2012-09-25/ben-bernake-inflation-money/57840674/1
The Federal Reserve should give people free money. People would spend this money, increasing demand for goods and services, causing employers to hire additional workers to meet this increased demand and reducing unemployment in the economy overall.
This probably sounds like a crazy idea, but it isn’t. People are a bit uncomfortable with the notion that the Fed can simply create money, but that is what the Fed does. Currently, under a program dubbed “QEIII” (Quantitative Easing III), the Fed is creating money and, instead of simply giving it to people, is using that money to purchase mortgage backed securities in order keep mortgage rates low and increase the supply of money in the economy. This also boosts the prices of these financial assets, providing a windfall to those who own them.

Why I Hate Obama – By Mitt Romney:
1. His first name is cool.
2. HE’s cool.
3. People LIKE him, me, not so much…….
4. He ate dog, and people still like him. I tied my dog to the roof of my car and the PETA people pelted me with Purina Dog Chow.
5. His wife knows bizarre words like, “On Sale” and “Bargain Bin”.
6. He actually went to school, (and finished), without Daddy writing him a check.
7. He stole my Romneycare idea and then, after he got the bill approved, made me have to pretend that I had nothing to do with the concept.
8. Bill Clinton.

Both. Without JOBS no one can afford to buy the crap the corporations put out. And a few more tax dollars from them wouldn’t hurt them. And before you make the argument of “They’ll take their businesses to another country!!!” — let them.
They need to move their rights of incorporation to someplace like China or India — then, after they do that, the Chineese and INdian governments can take them over and kick them out. “Outsourcing” so to speak — Works for me.

Add the fact that more people are keeping more of their money as opposed to paying taxes, with 47% not paying any federal taxes, and you would think the GOP would be doing a victory dance. After all, the GOP crows about shrinking government and making sure people get to keep more of their own money.
Instead, they’ve demonized the economy so bad, that the GOP can’t step forward and take credit for the things that are happening which are textbook GOP rhetoric and policy. Funny thing is, achieving what the GOP has preached about gives us the idea of what their intended policies actually do in real life.

The risk here is not terrorism, the risk is the probabability that gov’t will change tax policy, regulatory policy (including medicare/caid reimbursments for example) or relax or increase what are characterized as impediments to success….Why build a new nursing home if the risk exists reimbursement rates will fall…take the HC bill as written, it is already driving up total costs for employers who are now shifting cost back to employees…these are real issues that are factors in investment decision making..

Billybob: “the percentage was wrong ”
The point though is not the percentage being off by a bit here or there — in fact it was only off by about 1% — but the PREMISE that 1) those who pay no income taxes are people who are “dependent on government” and thus unable to take responsibility for themselves, and 2) that those very same people are all in Obama’s pockets, which couldn’t be further from the truth as a great many of those same people are retirees and seniors, etc., many of whom are faithful GOP voters (or were). So you’re missing the point.
“..but the point was honesty that the media continues to manipulate and lie about like what happened with romney in europe and concerning libya”
Why jump to foreign policy as though one is being used by the media to hide the other? That’s nonsense. The death of the Ambassador, terrible though it is, is not significant because of the fact that a Democrat or Republican is in office. It’s significant because of what it says about our imperial role in the world. And when it comes to this, both parties are right in line with each other, so it doesn’t really matter. If the fact that this happened under a Democrat bothers you, then why doesn’t the killing of the marines in Lebanon under Reagan bother you equally? Because your vision is selective, that’s why.

The main character, Marty the top consultant, tells the Wall Streeters about a scam that’ll work for them. They can go on national television and say that they “understand” about the suffering thats been happening because of the housing collapse and they’re willing to work with as many as 10 million people who are underwater or sinking with their mortgages to come up with a lifeboat.
However, Marty points out that what will really happen is that they could deny about 9.5 million for stupid ridiculous reasons, have them jump through hoops but never make the cut, and only approve the remaining BUT shaft them with a higher interest rate and, when no one is looking; get their bonuses anyway.
Funniest show ever!!

No rationalization here, it is just the business logic….serving shareholders interest as opposed to sacrificing shareholder value for what amounts to donations…
Sure, why risk investing large amounts of money in green energy technology when the pay off is years and years away, when shareholders interests can be gratified immediately?
I mean, it’s not like that idea was put forth 40 years ago by a sitting president who warned that our security would be threatened by terrorist using petrodollars.
You are rationalizing for the short term status quo when what we should be doing is investing in our country’s long term security by bringing manufacturing back to this country — and yes that means the shareholders will have to expect less for return on investment

Seems that you forget about that thing called FERS. Reagan did away with the “fat pension” that fed workers get. My pension is absolutely nothing compared to yours, if you retired CSRS as I think you did. My retirement is based on how well I invest my TSP funds.
You also forget that fed workers have to contribute even more towards that part of our retirement that is defined pension thanks to the debt ceiling negotiation. Not only do I get less of a defined pension than you, I also pay more towards getting less.
You fail yet again. As I stated earlier, you should just learn to embrace your moochiness instead of trying to deflect on others.

Get a job in the private sector !!
I started off in the private sector at the age of 16, and I was 35 when I first started working public sector. I’ll do my service to country and return back to the private sector before I retire. I had a 401k in the private sector that I rolled into my TSP. When I leave the government, I’ll likely roll the TSP back to a 401k.
As I stated earlier, if you were CSRS and didn’t convert, that is all foreign gobbledygook to you as you had nothing but a defined pension. I’m guessing you were CSRS as you keep telling me to give up my pension, when my pension has almost no bearing on my retirement. To be blunt, I don’t count on my pension or social security to be there when I retire. My retirement is based on how well I can play the market to fend for myself. I choose to do it in the public sector for now because I can protect my country and protect my retirement funds at the same time.
If you’re wondering how I protect my retirement funds, that’s due to the fact that the TSP has a much lower administrative cost over the course of my working career as opposed to a normal 401k. As many others do, I am simply using the tools given to me by the government to do what’s best for me and my family. If you don’t like it, tough noogies. Take it up with your congressional representation. They legislated this into being, not me.

“Presidential retirement benefits were non-existent until the enactment of the Former Presidents Act (FPA) in 1958. Since then, presidential retirement benefits have included a lifetime annual pension, staff and office allowances, travel expenses, Secret Service protection and more.
Pension
Former presidents are offered a taxable lifetime pension equal to the annual rate of basic pay for the heads of executive branch departments, like the Cabinet Secretaries. This amount is set annually by Congress and is currently (in 2011) $199,700 per year. The pension starts the minute the president officially leaves office at noon on Inauguration Day. Widows of former presidents are provided with a $20,000 annual lifetime pension and mailing privileges, unless they choose to waive their right to the pension.”

For those that want a bit of perspective on my retirement vs older government workers such as Scout, here’s a bit of information.
http://www.opm.gov/retire/pre/fers/index.asp
FERS is a retirement plan that provides benefits from three different sources: a Basic Benefit Plan, Social Security, and the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP). Two of the three parts of FERS (Social Security and the TSP) can go with you to your next job if you leave the Federal Government before retirement. The Basic Benefit and Social Security parts of FERS require you to pay your share each pay period. Your agency withholds the cost of the Basic Benefit and Social Security from your pay as payroll deductions. Your agency pays its part too. Then, after you retire, you receive annuity payments each month for the rest of your life.
http://www.opm.gov/retire/pre/csrs/index.asp
The Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) is a defined benefit, contributory retirement system. Employees share in the expense of the annuities to which they become entitled. CSRS covered employees contribute 7, 7 1/2 or 8 percent of pay to CSRS and, while they generally pay no Social Security retirement, survivor and disability (OASDI) tax, they must pay the Medicare tax (currently 1.45 percent of pay). The employing agency matches the employee’s CSRS contributions.
Reagan and his Congress did away with the government defined pension and put us on 401k’s in 1987.

The Right Wing echo chamber is deafening, and annoying. Answer me a question. How is that despite all that is obvious in the current political climate and attitudes in the GOP about the Romney campaign, that we have this massive effort to push this narrative that the polls are being skewed to Democrats so that they can somehow lay the groundwork for an excuse for an Obama loss or to steal the election? Is it because the GOP realizes the only way Romney wins is for THEM to steal the election, and as a result they are telling that GRAND LIE as spoken by Roosevelt? Actually it is very easy to steal an election on either side given these electronic voting systems and I can tell you how. Everyone is for sale, and I am talking about those who would be the tool for them stealing. They (GOP) could very well be trying to put the fix in, given early voting has already started and the voter ID laws are being bogged down in courts. It’s really their last hope. They are collectively leaning on this narrative a little TOO hard!!

your ilk defining any who accept a gubbimint check (but yourselves, of course) as a “moocher” is the problem.
The 47% is code for “people who we think don’t deserve a gubmint check.”
I’ve asked repeatedly just what this percentage is, since they keep saying it’s OBVIOUSLY not 47%, even though they say 47%.
And then they’re angry when anyone accuses them of talking about 47%.

The graphic below illustrates the underlying error: the class of people who deserve our enmity is not precisely “the rich” at the very top of the income ladder; instead, the class deserving voters’ wrath is composed of society’s predators and parasites, who span all rungs of the income ladder.

Close Jay, that BLS chart I looked at this morning said the work force at the end of August was 142,101,000 compared to 142,187,000 at the end of January 2009. But the claim that staggers the imagination is 4.6M jobs created while ignoring the 4.7M that must have been lost, discouraged workers, etc. And if you look at inflation adjusted wages per hour, all those new jobs must be at all the new McD’s and Walmarts!

Here is how the CSRS annuity formula is calculated:
**First 5 years of service
you receive 1.5 percent of your high-3 average salary for each year
**Second 5 years of service
you receive 1.5 percent of your high-3 average salary for each year PLUS 1.75 percent of your high-3 average salary for each year
**For all years of service over 10
you receive 1.5 percent of your high-3 average salary for each year PLUS 2 percent of your high-3 average salary for each year.
For the people who retire under FERS…
http://www.opm.gov/retire/pre/fers/computation.asp
Here is how the basic FERS annuity formula is calculated:
**retire under 62 or 62 and older with less than 20 years
you get 1 percent of your high-3 average salary for each year of service
**retire at 62 or older with 20 or more years
you get 1.1 percent of your high-3 average salary for each year of service
————————-
for law enforcement
you get 1.7% of your high-3 average salary multiplied by your years of service which do not exceed 20, PLUS 1% of your high-3 average salary multiplied by your service exceeding 20 years .

Of course capitalism is now designed for a market that now plays like Vegas where short term growth is preferred. Used to be place where you invested over the long term but that hasn’t been the case for various reasons for years..that’s just the way it is..
I think many companies are putting money in longer term concepts (see R&D expenditures) but since the risk of getting flooded with cheaper durable products from China and the like..what’s the real value…at least in the case of green techology which remain…generally VC or PE plays given the risk that needs to be spread…

Regarding at “47%” idiocy, I’m wondering if we have say 35% of those 47% or whatever the number is that are more than 50% supported by government programs, what happens and the trend continues up to over 50% of folks rely on the government for more than 50% of income?
What are the options to pay for that sort of growth in those legitimately needing significant help? Let’s say the birth rate for that demographic exceeds that of those who need no help?

Here’s the thing about those corporate profits… they’re a lot like gas prices or insurance costs… Gas prices fluctuate but they never quite seem to make it back to where they were, always inching up, never inching down. Insurance is a little easier to define, always up, 20% a year, for as long as I’ve self insured, since 2003. Corporate profits are at record levels, corporations will not magically begin to hire once a wingnut president is in place, why would they? They’ve figured out how to make record profits with minimal staffing, what on earth make wingnuts think corporations would want to hire more folks? If corporations haven’t felt the need to help out society when it needs it most, why would they feel obligated to do so now that the economy is getting better?

“If a new academic study is to be believed, Republican women politicians look more feminine than their Democratic counterparts.
The study, by two UCLA researchers, found that female politicians with what are described as stereotypically feminine features tended to be Republicans, and the reverse was also true for Democratic women. GOP women rated, on average, twice as stereotypically feminine as Democrats.
In fact, the authors said the correlation was so strong that undergraduates were regularly able to guess someone’s party affiliation just by the way she looked.”

Once again, that 47% thing is a stat that is misleading. Taken out of context, it is difficult to know how much the 47% stat deviates from the norm. That is ALWAYS an important consideration when doing statistical analysis. I am sure it was worse during to last economic downturn that is similar in scope (the 1930’s era depression). Also, if this were really important, we would have been talking about how few people were not paying taxes in the 1990’s as proof that Clinton’s policies were working. I don’t remember THAT conversation. One final point. How would some one like Romney know about how poor people think? How many poor people does he know?

To be fair, Mitt has to say that 47% of the peole are “victims” and feel “entitled”. Afterall, once you eliminate the people that legitimately receive the benefits or use the tax code to their advantage, your really only left with about 5% who actually milk the system. You just can’t stir up the base with ” If elected President, I promise to deal with the 5% of the population who are destroying this country with their entitlement mentality”.

Some reading on Mr. R’s “havens”:
there is a Bermuda-based entity called Sankaty High Yield Asset Investors Ltd., which has been described in securities filings as “a Bermuda corporation wholly owned by W. Mitt Romney.” It could be that Sankaty is an old vehicle with little importance, but Romney appears to have treated it rather carefully. He set it up in 1997, then transferred it to his wife’s newly created blind trust on January 1, 2003, the day before he was inaugurated as Massachusetts’s governor. The director and president of this entity is R. Bradford Malt, the trustee of the blind trust and Romney’s personal lawyer. Romney failed to list this entity on several financial disclosures, even though such a closely held entity would not qualify as an “excepted investment fund” that would not need to be on his disclosure forms. He finally included it on his 2010 tax return. Even after examining that return, we have no idea what is in this company, but it could be valuable, meaning that it is possible Romney’s wealth is even greater than previous estimates. While the Romneys’ spokespeople insist that the couple has paid all the taxes required by law, investments in tax havens such as Bermuda raise many questions, because they are in “jurisdictions where there is virtually no tax and virtually no compliance,” as one Miami-based offshore lawyer put it.
The media soon noticed Romney’s familiarity with foreign tax havens. A $3 million Swiss bank account appeared in the 2010 returns, then winked out of existence in 2011 after the trustee closed it, as if to remind us of George Romney’s warning that one or two tax returns can provide a misleading picture. Ed Kleinbard, a professor of tax law at the University of Southern California, says the Swiss account “has political but not tax-policy resonance,” since it—like many other Romney investments—constituted a bet against the U.S. dollar, an odd thing for a presidential candidate to do. The Obama campaign provided a helpful world map pointing to the tax havens Bermuda, Luxembourg, and the Cayman Islands, where Romney and his family have assets, each with the tagline “Value: not disclosed in tax returns.” When you are running for president, you might want to err on the side of overpaying your taxes, and not chase every tax gimmick that comes down the pike,” says Sheppard. “It kind of looks tacky.”
CONSPIRACY THEORY ALERT!!:
When we look at this one line===>> (constituted a bet against the U.S. dollar, an odd thing for a presidential candidate to do. ) of that paragraph, you’d have to wonder if Romney wants to become President in order to sign into law, regulations that would make him/his family BILLIONS.

So this is a preliminary estimate of the upcoming revision which will be completed after the election (Feb 2013). If recent history follow trend, this estimate will turn out to be as ridiculously overstated as the number that it is supposed to be revising!

via The Daily Dish:
“Whenever conservatives talk to me about Barack Obama, I always feel quite certain that they mean something else. But what exactly? The anger, the suspicion, the freestyle fantasizing have no perceptible object in the space-time continuum that centrist Democrats like me inhabit. What are we missing? Seen from our perspective, the country elected a moderate and cautious straight shooter committed to getting things right and giving the United States its self-respect back after the Bush-Cheney years. Unlike the crybabies at MSNBC and Harper’s Magazine, we never bought into the campaign’s hollow “hope and change” rhetoric, so aren’t crushed that, well, life got in the way. At most we hoped for a sensible health care program to end the scandal of America’s uninsured, and were relieved that Obama proposed no other grand schemes of Nixonian scale. We liked him for his political liberalism and instinctual conservatism. And we still like him,” – Mark Lilla, in a brilliant and often hilarious review.
All in all a good read. Sorry if it’s a repeat.

One candidate has to tell the truth, it is out there audited by the US Government. No audit on Romney, he can pretend he has all the answers and outside wearing out a fact finding alarm for lying there is nothing on this guy. It is like a guy in the shadows telling a woman to leave her lover he has what she wants. She can’t see him but she knows what she’s got and all this shady guy is doing is telling her he is better, staying out of sight the whole time.
You would think Obama is competing against God, no one else is that perfect. Every move, ” I can do better”. O ain’t running against God, or I would vote for God, he is running against Romney a human at best. And I tell ya something I have hear more out of God talking to me in this election than I have Romney, so I know for sure Romney is not God.

One of the most widely recognized indicators of a recession is higher unemployment
rates. In December 2007, the national unemployment rate was 5.0 percent, and it had
been at or below that rate for the previous 30 months. At the end of the recession, in
June 2009, it was 9.5 percent. In the months after the recession, the unemployment
rate peaked at 10.0 percent (in October 2009). Before this, the most recent months
with unemployment rates over 10.0 percent were September 1982 through June
1983, during which time the unemployment rate peaked at 10.8 percent.
Compared with previous recessions, the higher proportion of long-term unemployed
(those unemployed for 27 weeks or longer) in the recent recession and its post- recession period is notable.
http://www.bls.gov/spotlight/2012/recession/pdf/recession_bls_spotlight.pdf
Mistake’s economic record. Recession ended Jun 2009. Recovery begins……………………………….
We had a booming economy from about 1983 to Dec 2007, low employment, and family incomes increasing every year, but Obama says “we ain’t going back”. No, we are going to try something different, like maybe see how much lift we can acquire, as we launch ourselves off the cliff. Family income down 8% under Barry.
Bush left a lot to be desired, he spent like a Democrat, and started a new program we couldn’t afford, Medicare Part D, but as the second sentence of the BLS report above stated, employment at 5% and lower than that for the 30 preceding months. Barry could be President for the next thirty years and he will never see unemployment at less than 5%.
There is your economic meltdown. I blame Obama for the lack of any recovery over the last 3 years. Kennedy, Reagan and Clinton left instructions on how to deal with economic downturns, but Barry says we ain’t going back to an economy that doesn’t work for everyone. So we all suffer.
