Romney agrees: Tax code too easy on those in his bracket

If actions speak louder than words, then Mitt Romney agrees with Barack Obama that the federal tax code requires too little of rich people like himself.

I don’t know how else to interpret the fact that Romney artificially increased his own taxes in 2011 by taking fewer charitable deductions than he could have. By doing so, Romney’s effective tax rate in 2011 jumped to 14.1 percent, still lower than the rate paid by millions of his fellow Americans.

Absent that step, ABC News reports, “his effective tax rate could have been as low as 10.4 percent.”

And would Romney have taken that step if he wasn’t running for president? Highly unlikely. As the candidate himself told us back in July:

“I don’t pay more than are legally due and frankly if I had paid more than are legally due I don’t think I’d be qualified to become president. I’d think people would want me to follow the law and pay only what the tax code requires.”

So to review:

Romney paid 14.1 percent of his income in taxes, a figure that could have and would have been as low as 10.4 percent if he wasn’t running for office. In contrast, the average effective tax rate paid by his wealthy father back in the ’60s was 37 percent.

Yet Romney continues to insist that wealthier Americans today can’t be asked to shoulder more of the financial burden, even as changes in the global economy continue to concentrate more and more wealth in their hands.

Moby hit the nail on the head when he drew a connection between Romney’s 47% statement and the song “Common People” by Pulp.

“But still you’ll never get it right,

You’ll never live like common people,

I would argue that both the rich and the poor need to pay more in taxes.

Tax capital gains at the same rate as any other income (you can index for inflation, since that is not income).

Establish a minimum 5% tax rate. Everyone should pay SOMETHING to support the USA (and medicare and SS taxes don’t count since you get those back in benefits).

“It’s a lot easier to distinguish the ones worth trusting and relying on if you actually know how to perform them and read them.”

Pollsters are like weathermen: they can predict imminent election results pretty well, but those a month or two in the future not so well. Aside from questions one might have about the continued reliability of polls in the face of increasing technological change, I think to cite them regularly (as Jay does) this far out from the election is silly.

The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly. The rich have always objected to being governed at all. ~G. K. Chesterton, English essayist (1874-1936)

“They are…you can always get another job”

And they can always get a job too, if they need more money. But people like Romney ALREADY have an income stream and they will get more money just by sitting on their asses and not doing anything.

Why not fund Medi care as if it was a unneccessary war ? The GOP talks a game, but performs awfull.

“If the government makes a conscious decision to provide tax breaks to certain players, then it *is* giving that money away, no matter how much conservative ideologues like to argue otherwise.”

That kind of statement would have made the Founding Fathers laugh, and then tar and feather you.

You are of course correct..she’s too right wing for me but you gotta admit, there exists no small amount of evidence to support all those suggestions..

Yes, I should have named her…not sure what difference that would make..I’m clearly not bright enough to think of those all on my lonesome..

Doing a googledy search shows that capital gains taxes has come down significantly from the late 70s. And that coincides with a conscious decision to eschew manufacturing in favor of financial services prognostication.

We’ve been losing manufacturing jobs at the same time that capital gains taxes have been falling, so please don’t try to tell me that capital gains encourages job creation.

Romney has never held office that could change the tax code so don’t blame him for taking deductions that other Democrat’s and Republican’s put into law.

Thank you Mr. Romney for paying way more than your fair share.

Pollsters are like weathermen: they can predict imminent election results pretty well, but those a month or two in the future not so well.

That sounds reasonable, but … well, Nate Silver provides a pretty good explanation, today, of how well polls have performed this far out, in the past.

http://fivethirtyeight.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/09/24/the-statistical-state-of-the-presidential-race/

the polling by this time in the cycle has been reasonably good, especially when it comes to calling the winners and losers in the race. Of the 19 candidates who led in the polls at this stage since 1936, 18 won the popular vote (Thomas E. Dewey in 1948 is the exception), and 17 won the Electoral College (Al Gore lost it in 2000, along with Mr. Dewey).

Sure, it could change between now and Nov., but that wouldn’t be the smart way to bet.

“Kind of like starting a War in Iraq , not having any type of monies funded for the WAR”

The war WAS funded…what it wasn’t was BUDGETED. It was paid for by off-budget bills.
