Mitt Romney and the GOP’s bad case of buyer’s remorse
Mitt Romney’s taking more heat these days from his own side than from Democrats. In Wisconsin, for example, U.S. Senate candidate Tommy Thompson is blaming Romney for his own rather-sudden collapse in the polls.
“The presidential thing is bound to have an impact on every election,” Thompson said. “You know, whether you’re a Democrat or Republican, if your standard-bearer for the presidency is not doing well, it’s going to reflect on the down ballot.”
As this case of buyers’ remorse deepens, though, disenchanted Republicans might want to remember the field of alternatives to Romney. It’s hard to believe, for example, that Rick Santorum would be doing any better than Romney. And Newt Gingrich? By this point he would have self-destructed several times over, although the entertainment value would have been considerable.
And then of course there’s this guy:
“(Herman) Cain told members of the media after the speech that Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney’s recent “47 percent” comment was a “non-story” being blown out of proportion by the media. But Cain said he would have been doing better if he was the nominee, saying that he’d probably have a “substantial lead” on President Barack Obama at this point.
“The reason is quite simple: I have some depth to my ideas,” he said.”

Wisconsin polling is parallel to National polling – almost worthless until just before the election. Scott Walker was doomed according to polling until just before the recall vote, and look what happened.
Obama’s domestic policies are an F’n disaster and we are watching his foreign policy unravel before our eyes. They are even to the point of sending out the UN ambassador to knowingly lie on all the Sunday politic shows. The Obama-Hillary apology commercials in Pakistan are already bitting him on the rear. It’s hard to believe they are so dumb.

I’m just hoping that the money that is being poured into ads supporting Mitt & slandering the President end up being wasted with a landslide. It appears that people are finally coming to the realization (especially with Mitt’s recently taped gaffe and the Univision makeup blunder) that the GOP only cares for you if you are wealthy. After 30+ years of “trickle-down” and “vodoo” economics and a lower standard of living they are finally seeing the light. Not that I’m saying that the Dems will perform miracles, but in football jargon, when you run the same play over and over and get intecepted every time, you’ll realize that strategy doesn’t work.

Huntsman worried me. He had the potential to fact-check Obama into a loss. Romney doesn’t. FWIW, I still can’t see how Romney got nominated and Huntsman became an also-ran. I didn’t like all of Huntsman’s positions, but he’d have been a tougher opponent for Democrats IMO.
Roemer was another Republican I could have possibly voted for, but the fact that he was a serious kind of guy who’d switched over from the Democrats doomed him from the start, I think.

Romney and Ryan need to release the SPECIFICS on how they plan on implementing and funding their policies.
Hearing Romney and his campaign statements, they have internal polling that if they release or talk about the specific of his or Ryan’s plan then they will lose some Republican voters and many independents.
AARP does not seem to think the Romney and Ryan plans are good for seniors. I think I’ll take the AARP’s word for it.
Most independents that I talk to are not going to vote for Romney and Ryan due to their policies and funding of those policies. Romney is not losing cause he is a flawed. He is losing cause of what the impact may be from the Romney and Ryan plan.
The press and the right are going to have to come to terms with this basic reality.

I was certainly remorseful enough when Cain dropped out of the race. President Obama himself recently said that Washington has to be changed from the outside, and no candidate was more “outside” than Cain. Let’s see: should I gripe about my favorite candidate non getting the nomination, or should I play the hand I’ve got and make the best of it that I can?

Mitt claims to have earned 13.7 million in 2011. That’s pretty good for an unemployed person. And he only had to pay 14.1% of it in federal income tax. That’s a lot more that those mooching 42 percenters or 46 percenters or whatever pay. No wonder he promises to cut his taxes even more if elected. He wants to be a 42 percenter too. Then again, how do we know he wasn’t a 42 percenter given that he did have a Swiss bank account and what purpose does a Swiss bank account serve for Mitt and the other thousands, that have already been caught. Mitt Romney paid $1,935,708 in taxes on $13,696,951 in income in 2011 for an effective tax rate of 14.1 percent, according to a return that will be released Friday afternoon at 3 p.m.
Romney also plans to post a letter from his tax preparer, PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP, giving a summary of tax rates from the Romneys’ tax returns for the 20-year period of 1990-2009.

What’s so conservative about the Pledge?
Very little, as it turns out. From its inception, in 1892, the Pledge has been a slavish ritual of devotion to the state, wholly inappropriate for a free people. Is Mitt one of them? I still have my doubts. Voters see that and recoil not just from him, but from the Party that selected him.

Huntsman worried me. He had the potential to fact-check Obama into a loss. Romney doesn’t. FWIW, I still can’t see how Romney got nominated and Huntsman became an also-ran. I didn’t like all of Huntsman’s positions, but he’d have been a tougher opponent for Democrats IMO.
The biggest mistake the GOP made was in not supporting Huntsman at all. Huntsman is the only person that I think would have effectively neutered any perceived advantage Obama has. He would have had a much easier task of persuading independents and probably a few moderate Democrats.

There are stronger slates in state wide Georgia Republican primaries than there was in the Republican primary presidential election. Your two native Georgians Cain and Newt have never won a state wide election, Cain losing a U.S Senate primary and Newt never being ask to run. At one point they both were polled leading the presidential primary, yet they had never been very successful in their own home state. We usually use the primary to filter out the J.B Stoners or the political hack who rolls off the bar stool long enough to make a fool of himself. These two guys one filtered out already and one gerrymandering his way to fame are what is left of the standing army call the Republican Party. Romney is literally the best of a weak farm system. Unlike the Democratic convention the GOP had no real star power to lift a candidate. Newt came out like Roy Rogers with his latest wife, don’t think her name was Dell,and I don’t remember Herman being mentioned, they had some other token from Alabama or was it West Va.

For me the saddest thing about his candidacy was the primary debate when one of those stupid show-of-hands questions came up, where they were asked if they’d walk away from a deal that was 10:1 spending cuts:tax hikes. I was sitting there with my mouth agape, going “um, Jon? isn’t this where you show everyone you’ve not become a *complete* tool, just because you’re running for your party’s nomination?”

Mitt Romney’s trustee said in a campaign press release that Romney artificially inflated his own effective tax rate so it would remain above 13 percent by deferring $1.75 million in charitable deductions. Romney had previously said that none of his last decade of tax returns dipped below that 13 percent threshold.
In an interview with ABC News in July, however, Romney dismissed the idea that he would ever pay more taxes than legally owed, saying if he did so he wouldn’t be “qualified” to be president.
“I don’t pay more than are legally due and frankly if I had paid more than are legally due I don’t think I’d be qualified to become president,” Romney said. “I’d think people would want me to follow the law and pay only what the tax code requires.”

Peggy Noonan wrote another editorial in the WSJ today calling the Romney campaign a trainwreck, but holding out hope the 1st debate and the Oct. job numbers could still save Mitt. However the opposite is true as well. I don’t know about you, but my tax forms for 2011 and prior years have been complete for a long time. If I needed to provide them for any purpose, it wouldn’t take me months and months to clean them up and revise them before I could provide them. So IMO there’s still something Romney’s not telling us.
Frankly, I think he’s one of those SOBs that the IRS threatened with prosecution for hiding assets in Swiss bank accounts and who the Swiss bank UBS ratted out. I think he got immunity — as many of those threatened did get it when they agreed to come clean to the IRS — and I think he RESTATED his taxes because of that.
I don’t believe he’s been *proven* to have not paid his taxes, but I also don’t believe that Reid has been *proven* to have lied, either. I think the truth is somewhere in between, but I don’t think Romney will share that truth with us. At least, I don’t think he’ll do it *willingly.*

Bear in mind that Mormons are *obliged* as an article of faith to tithe a minimum of 10% to the LDS church in order to remain in good standing I find that sizable charitable donation troubling, and I suspect that it’s a lot closer to 10% of what Romney actually *grossed* that year than it appears to be, based on the stats he provided.

My wife’s family was LDS for five generations and *left* over a threatened audit. The church normally only audits very well-to-do Mormons and those it has reason to believe are concealing assets or not giving over a full 10%.

It is apparent that when it comes to Medicare, medicaid and social security many on the left are deaf as well as dumb. I will repeat well known facts though I seriously doubt many on the left can read. One Obama is the only living person who has removed money which was “ear marked” for medicare from medicare to the tune of 517 billion dollars with no plan top repay the money. He confiscated the money to make Obamacare seem cheaper. In addition he then claimed unrealised savings on medicare which he claimed would result from the implementation by Obamacare. He then countedt he previous mentioned fictional savings again thus mis representing the cost of Obamacare by one billion dollars before it was evenapproved by congress. Obama then transferred most of the cost of medicaid to the states knowing full well the states cannot afford to pay for it thus effectively eliminationg medicaid and giving himself the excuse of blaming the states. In addition, the only people who continue to lie about social secirity are democrats who are either stupid or dishonest since it is well known outside of the brain dead liberal circles that no one presently receiving or will be receiving in the near future social security benefits will have any change to their social security benefits. It is also common knowledge that social security as it is presently funded and disbursed will not survive in its present form with out major changes in the way it is funded or disbursed. Even dumb democrats know this so anyone disputing this is dumber than the dumb.

Just so. If Obama takes OH and FL, he only needs TWELVE more EVs to win. There are several states already in his column that provide more than that number, and he’s leading in quite a few battleground states.
But you are correct in that if Obama takes those two states, then Romney cannot win the Electoral College. Even if he only takes one, Romney still has to pretty much run the table on the remaining battleground states to win, and that looks neither practical nor possible at this time.

1. convention bump will go away and race will tighten;
2. Romney and his Super-Pacs still have more money than King Midas to spend;

The future of the country will be much better served once it gets over the stalemate caused by the two party system. It is not just about who wins the next election; that’s short sighted and for the most part already decided. It’s about where the country is in 10-20 years. The truth is Libertarians are very poorly represented by the Republican party. Libertarians have their own unique message that doesn’t deserve to get buried under all that tea party silliness. Too bad Ron Paul got screwed by the media and GOP. I would have loved to have seen him debate Obama. Romney can’t compete with that ticket. I respect the Libertarian message more than the mainstream Republican one. I believe people should remain true to their beliefs and vote for what they believe in, or the system will remain forever broken. Picking the less of two evils ultimately leads to evil. Brave people vote for what they believe in.

Coal workers in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio and Kentucky are in the Romney column enough to sway even those blue states and the most recent poll among Jewish voters in Florida show Obama has lost 7 percent of their vote which Obama can’t win without. In addition. Cubans usually vote Republican. So before you count your chickens just watch where the candidates campaign and you will know what is up for grabs.

Even if Romney scores FL *and* OH, he still has to run the table on the remaining battleground states to win. He can lose *one* of them (either NH, NV, IA or CO, but nothing larger than that), but if he loses more than one of those other states, then he won’t win EVEN if he takes BOTH FL and OH.

To be honest, in my estimation most of that stuff doesn’t matter a whole bunch at this point. It is simply about passion! People are smart enough to know that the wheels of the economy are in motion and moving in the direction they will up through election day. Nothing of substance will get done by ANY Washington politician because most of them are fighting for their political lives. It comes down to what type of country we want from here on. The election WILL set in place a MANDATE, and a lot of people will have to come to grips with it and accept and be “patriotic” about it. If not, really maybe they ought to consider if this is the country for them and their family. It’s a big world out there. About the debates though, I believe what will show in Romney (and turn more people off to him) is what’s in his core. I believe he will revert to a contemptuous I’m-above-you smirky snarky state when pressed. It is in his upbringing; we’ve all seen it. Also, he has no genuine interest in foreign policy and never has… other than being able to namedrop being buds with “BB” (Netanyahu), like he does with so many. Because of that, he will be light in that department. You wait and see. You cannot fake that stuff. Palin proved that.

Shrug. I’ve said it here many times. Some don’t listen and blame my leftyness on my upbringing. Others, like Doom, like to claim that the GOP kicked me out.
The fact of the matter is that the GOP and I drifted apart during the Clinton years (that’s right, I didn’t vote for Clinton either time) and by the time of the 2000 election, I wasn’t motivated for vote for Bore *or* Gush, I mean Gore or Bush. I wound up voting for Libertarian Harry Browne instead.
But by 2003 and the invasion of Iraq, I was done with the GOP. I was first attracted to the GOP as a teen in the 70s by the writings of William F. Buckley. His brand of intellectual conservatism captivated me, as well as the notion that one would adapt and adjust one’s approach to changing conditions. However, as time went on, it became plain that the GOP had tossed that to the curb and had instead adopted the chest-beating anti-intellectual brand of religious-based bulldada we have today.
And so I left — probably for good — in 2003. I voted Kerry in 2004 without regrets.
The GOP could conceivably woo me back, but not with the thuggish demands and threats its adherents use today. They’re going to have to *persuade* me, and AFAICS, not a man-jack among them has the mental and intellectual chops to do that.

I am still a registered GOP voter but intend to punch a straight democratic ticket in November. I didn’t say liberals didn’t make that claim. The Democrat party recently made a big deal out of a single voter who claimed to have voted for McCain and now will vote for Obama. They actually did an ad. Then, when the truth came out that their so called convert was really a Registered Democrat and had previously worked for Obama they did a quick pull the ad now trick. Sort of like the guy that claimed Romney caused him to lose his health insurnce which caused his wife to die of cancer. It was all a big lie. Democrats are famoud for dreaming up false stories during campaigns. Wasn’t it Al Gore who lied about learning the “Union Lable” song on his mother’s knee. Problem was the song hadn’t been written yet. As I said, I have never met a liberal who was once a conservative. It defies logic. I have heard the claim but as old as I am I have never met one. BTW I too was young and stupid once and I voted for JFK. But I grew up.
