I had this in the queue last week, to mark the memorial service of astronaut Neil Armstrong at the National Cathedral in Washington, but unfortunate events forced a change of plans. I love the artist, Diane Krall (wife of Elvis Costello), as well as the song, and thought it was a small bit of genius to invite her to play and sing at the Armstrong service.
She does a great, wistful interpretation here, perfect for the occasion, and too good to let go by the wayside.

They shake your hand and they smile
And they buy you a drink
They say we’ll be your friends
We’ll stick with you till the end
Ah but everybody’s only Looking out for themselves
And you say well who can you trust
I’ll tell you it’s just Nobody else’s money -
Money changes everything
Money changes everything

We don’t pull the strings

Well, it’s the time of year sorta between summer and winter. Most of the best days are behind you and you’re almost dreading the months to come. People you never thought of dying do, and young people you always thought of as young get old. After a while you get a few years on you, and sometimes you get up in the morning with a feeling you forgot to do something in your life. Or maybe you just want a do-over. Anyhow, this song sorta says that to me. It’s been running thru my head for the past couple weeks:

TomorrowI will be up at the farm completing a nice comfortable deer watching/observing/photographing/and maybe shooting perch. I miss sitting in the woods on a clear October evening with a good book, binoculars, and a rifle. The good book may be the reason I don’t have any trophies on the wall.

Hey stands – When you posted above about Piano Red and Mr Moonlight I got to remembering one time about 15 years ago. My son was involved with the Atlanta Blues Society and a teen music program.
They would bring in a guest each month for the jam. One time an old black guy came in and sang with the kids. He told a story about about writing Mr Moonlight and how the kids needed to concentrate on writing music, not just playing. He said. “I wrote one song that got big and it has kept me in Cadillacs for 40 years”.
At the time I had heard of Piano Red and I would have remembered seeing him. It was this guy.

Kam, MOONLIGHT IN VERMONT was never a favorite, but if memory serves, he was among, if not the first of his race to have his own show – 15 minutes! Yeah, even the network news was only 15 minutes. Thirty minute shows were quite the innovation, back in the day. Of course, all THREE networks/channels signed off at midnight with the inspirational poem, HIGH FLIGHT. No, I wouldn’t go back to those days; I like the myriad choices I have now, 24/7. But then, I guess I couldn’t miss what I didn’t know. But since I DO know, I would miss sexy Mark Harmon on NCIS & Chris Matthews & Rachel Maddow, & Colbert, & Stewart. Okay, end of trip down Memory Lane. Suggestion: do search for poem HIGH FLIGHT.
