Ol’ Harry Truman was a dirty socialist? Who knew?

220px-Harry-truman

President Harry Truman

A reader, the daughter of a now-deceased reporter for the Atlanta Journal, was digging through some old files of her father’s and came across something that she thought I might find interesting. She was right.

It’s a clip of a story written by her father, Odom Fanning, in 1949, reporting on a debate sponsored by the Gate City Lodge of B’nai Brith. Read the first two paragraphs alone, and you get the flavor of the piece. The parallels with today’s debate on health care are uncanny, missing only a reference to Marxist anti-colonial Kenyans out to destroy this country from within.

The president pushing the program at the time was Harry Truman, the man who had dropped the A-bomb on Japan and who, a year later, would commit U.S. troops to a land war in Asia, trying to block the invasion of South Korea by North Korean and Chinese communists.

Jay,

Where in the hell have you been? Or, should I say… Where in the hell were you when they taught civics in middle school and highschool???

Here is a famous quote from Truman which addresses his stance on socialism…

“The Republicans … will try to make people believe that everything the Government has done for the country is socialism. They will go to the people and say: “Did you see that social security check you received the other day—you thought that was good for you, didn’t you? That’s just too bad! That’s nothing in the world but socialism. Did you see that new flood control dam the Government is building over there for the protection of your property? Sorry—that’s awful socialism! That new hospital that they are building is socialism. Price supports, more socialism for the farmers! Minimum wage laws? Socialism for labor! Socialism is bad for you, my friend. Everybody knows that. And here you are, with your new car, and your home, and better opportunities for the kids, and a television set—you are just surrounded by socialism! Now the Republicans say, ‘That’s a terrible thing, my friend, and the only way out of this sinkhole of socialism is to vote for the Republican ticket.’”

No eureka moment here, Jay! Anyway, did you hear that its true that Ceasar crossed the Rubicon, LMAO!

You would think he was Nostradamus…

“Republicans approve of the American farmer, but they are willing to help him go broke. They stand four-square for the American home–but not for housing. They are strong for labor–but they are stronger for restricting labor’s rights. They favor minimum wage–the smaller the minimum wage the better. They endorse educational opportunity for all–but they won’t spend money for teachers or for schools. They think modern medical care and hospitals are fine–for people who can afford them. They consider electrical power a great blessing–but only when the private power companies get their rake-off. They think American standard of living is a fine thing–so long as it doesn’t spread to all the people. And they admire of Government of the United States so much that they would like to buy it.”

What Truman always failed to mention was that the US Government hires from the private sector to do the job of constructing bridges, roads, Hospitals, schools, social security, welfare, medicare and so and so on. No one doubts the marveluos job they do in the hiring process of construction.

The problem rather exists ALWAYS in running the hospitals, schools, welfare programs etc etc once its built. The government whether liberal, conservative, democrat, republican is a flocking mess when it comes to the day to day management of government sponsered enterprises.

Not some, ALL. That’s why it’s single PAYER.

” We need a system where the physician does not grudge the time he/she spends with a patient”

That’s a different issue, and that’s where some form of “socialized” medicine might enter the picture. If a doctor knows that the amount he is paid will not vary according to how many patients he sees, there’s not such a strong incentive to have as many patients as humanly possible. BUT, on the other hand…to keep the patient level doable, the “system” needs to ensure there are enough doctors (and nurses) in an area to treat ALL of the possible patients.

I don’t hear much from the Republicans lately about repealing the Affordable Care Act, aka Obamacare — that’s because A) it reminds those Obama haters about Romneycare, and B) they know the die is cast. Some form of universal health care is here to stay, and it’s either an insurance mandate or single payer, so if they repeal the first they are leaving the door wide open for the second.

President Obama got it done. I know that sticks in the Republicans’ craw, but maybe overtime the pain of his having a success will lessen for them.

Single payer does not inject the federal government into running hospitals and clinics. As for the other things you mention, there’s this: government will step in when the private sector fails to step up.

There is this thing where the private sector pays up when the government over spends and wastes money. It is a two way street and never forget it! The private sector funds wars, welfare programs, retirement for the elderly and yes, remember the $400 toilets seats the government was buying in the 1970s??? Yes, they were!

Single payer, does effect hospitals. My wife happens to be an administrator for one of the largest government run hospitals in the US. Insurance represents money. Money is a necessary commodity to run a hospital… to keep qualified doctors, to keep it staffed, to keep it updated with new technologies, etc etc!

Private hospitals generally exceed all those qualities when compared with goverment run hospitals.

According to a poster on Paul Krugman’s blog today: “Since 1979, productivity has risen some 80%. Overall wages have risen 5%. Income for the top 1% has risen 240%. Who are the ‘takers,’ indeed!”

Yet, those particular top 1% – who are Republicans such as Mitt Romney – want to cut government programs such as Social Security and Medicare, at the same time that overall wages have risen so very little, in over 30 years, for average workers. (People making $12.70 an hour could hardly be expected to build retirement portfolios for themselves, yet they can contribute to Social Security and Medicare.) Even knowing this financial inequity exists in America, Republicans would cut these social programs from these working class people who are trying to survive in this nation – which has been skewed to benefit the top 1%, primarily, especially within the past 35 years.

The saddest part of this whole scenario is that so many conservatives who need Social Security and Medicare, for the very reasons I have just laid out, will vote for Gov. Romney in November.

Or did they just assume one led to the other?

Did the benefits wizards talk about the return of premiums to policyholders whose insurance providers spend to much on themselves and not enough on sick people?

I have “good” insurance, a great doctor, a working IQ, and the assertiveness to stand up for myself, ask questions, and research my condition. Even with all that, frankly, I’m surprised I didn’t DIE already. Even with all that, I had to jump through hoop after hoop after hoop, return for test after test, spend HOURS on the phone trying to get somebody to tell me what’s wrong, and when I can expect to pay somebody to do something about it. (Apparently, the only thing graduates of these medical assistant “colleges” CAN tell you is what you will NOT be getting from your doctor today.) God forbid you have an issue with a prescription, or a question about your near-death experience over the long holiday weekend. How dare you bother them with it? Months transpire between the raising of the red flag and the solution I will soon be getting and for which I will be paying significant out-of -pocket costs. Thankfully, I have enough in the bank to cover it.

The point of this rant is not to complain, (please do not feign sympathy!) but to ask these questions:
–> What do the poor people do?
–> What do the STUPID people do?
–> If **I’m** barely hanging on, how do they survive at all?

Anyone who thinks there’s nothing wrong with the medical system we have needs to avail himself of his psychiatric benefits. (Good luck with that!)

Federal Reserve controls money supply! Federal Reserve is a private entity. Yes, there will always be money but what will it be worth is the question. They with the help of the Federal Reserve can print it all day long but when inflation hits the value of it deminishes rapidly. In the 1930s, it cost Germans 1 month’s wages to buy a loaf of bread. In Zimbabwe, right now, they reach super hyperinflation as high as 516 quintillion %. That’s so high, you burn the money rather than firewood to keep warm!

President Harry S Truman ordered the Secretary of Commerce on April 8, 1952, to seize and operate most of the country’s steel mills for the ostensible purpose of maintaining production of critical munitions.

Owners of the seized properties obtained a court injunction against the seizure, and an appeal of that injunction to the U.S. Supreme Court gave rise to one of the “great cases” in constitutional law, Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. et al. v. Sawyer.1 Although the Court found the president’s actions to be unconstitutional, its decision did not signify a triumph of private rights or a significant check on the government’s exercise of de facto emergency powers.

http://www.independent.org/publications/article.asp?id=1394

I am guessing the point is a Socialist would not invade another socialist country. However, the argument is fairly weak when looking at history. For example, Vietnam invaded Cambodia, the Soviets invaded Czechoslovakia, China invaded Vietnam. Socialism doesn’t seem to eliminate Nationalistic tendies.

Also, there are different degrees to which someone is socialist.

Lots of folks say government can never get anything right, but just ask them: Have you ever had a problem with an airline? Did your bank ever make a mistake? Does your power go off sometimes? What about your cable service? How do you feel about your cellphone provider? Does every restaurant you go to serve your food exactly as you want it every meal you eat there? Ever worked with a contractor to build or remodel a house?

Government doesn’t get everything right; no one does. But if government in America gets too many things wrong, we have the power to change it.

Many consider Truman one of our 10 greatest presidents. I think Obama will be right up there with him. Neither one were appreciated in their time, even Truman’s mother in law, who like Obama’s lived in the White House, wouldn’t claim him. Greatest man of his time and his mother in law thought her daughter married beneath herself.

As a fiscal conservative, and much to the dismay of my friends and family that are socially much farther to the right than myself, I actually think that having a single payer government-run system COULD be more cost-effective for all Americans IF administered properly without a bloated bureaucracy.

The insurance companies unbridled growth in premiums and copays, combined with lack of tort reform, combined with a myriad of conflicting state rules and regulations, says to me that if we can never effectuate changes in these industries, the government may be able to do better at a lower cost. Shocking even to myself.
However, doctors need to be more empowered in a single-payer system.

I’m a fan of Truman. He dropped nukes and arguably saved countless lives in those two horrifically brutal events.

Personnel at the Navy Department estimated that the total losses to America (in a Japanese invasion) would be between 1.7 and 4 million with 400,000 to 800,000 deaths.

The loss of Japanese civilian lives would have been truly staggering…

those crazy Germans……… engineering a better system than either DEMS or REPS can come up with

Healthcare in GermanyFrom Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Germany has a universal multi-payer health care system with two main types of health insurance: “Law-enforced health insurance” (Gesetzliche Krankenversicherung) known as sickness funds and “Private” (Private Krankenversicherung).[1][2][3]

Compulsory insurance applies to those below a set income level and is provided through private non-profit “sickness funds” at common rates for all members, and is paid for with joint employer-employee contributions. Provider compensation rates are negotiated in complex corporatist social bargaining among specified autonomously organized interest groups (e.g. physicians’ associations) at the level of federal states (Länder). The sickness funds are mandated to provide a wide range of coverages and cannot refuse membership or otherwise discriminate on an actuarial basis. Small numbers of persons are covered by tax-funded government employee insurance or social welfare insurance. Persons with incomes above the prescribed compulsory insurance level may opt into the sickness fund system, which a majority do, or purchase private insurance. Private supplementary insurance to the sickness funds of various sorts is available.

In 2005, Germany spent 10.7% of GDP on health care, or US$3,628 per capita. According to the World Health Organization, Germany’s health care system was 77% government-funded and 23% privately funded as of 2004[4]. In 2004 Germany ranked thirtieth in the world in life expectancy (78 years for men). It had a very low infant mortality rate (4.7 per 1,000 live births), and it was tied for eighth place in the number of practicing physicians, at per 1,000 people (3.3). In 2001 total spending on health amounted to 10.8 percent of gross domestic product

I mean, may God help the health-care program that merely breaks even, or, may God forbid, holds down costs like Obamacare does.

But it reminds me of a campaign speech FDR made in ‘36, in which he soundly ridiculed this Republican tendency to try to make it all about them. It’s too funny, Jay, and a clear indication that this crap with the Republican Party has been going on far too long!

“Let me warn you and let me warn the nation against the smooth evasion that says ‘of course we believe these things. We believe in social security. We believe in work for the unemployed. We believe in saving homes. Cross our hearts and hope to die, we believe in all these things. BUT, we do not like the way the present administration is DOING them! Just turn them over to us. We will do ALL of them. We will do MORE of them. We will do them better! And most important of all, the doing of them will not cost anybody ANYthing.’”

What exactly are you reaching for? Where does this say Harry Truman was a socialist? This is an article about universal health care, Harry Truman was obviously in favor, especially for the aged (he was the first Medicare enrollee in the 1960s, correct)?
The idea of universal health care was to reduce fear and keep you covered in case of emergency, just as Social Security was set up to keep elderly people from starving in the 1930s. SS was NEVER envisioned to be a 1-2:1 payee to receiver ratio like today with it paying for all sorts of stuff. Plus the average life expectancy wasn’t even 65 then.
And health care meant you got treatment if you were very, very sick. It wasn’t that someone weighed 325 pounds (no one weighed that much back then, just look at pictures) and went to the doctor because they had high blood pressure, aching joints, etc. and expected to have a pill cure their ills.

Not even Apples and Oranges. The world was much simpler then and people didn’t routinely live into their 80s/90s and have DECADES of medical care provided for them at little or no cost (Medicare payments in don’t even come close to covering cost of the program).

What people don’t seem to understand is that Obamacare is about access and insurance reform, NOT health care reform or cost containment. One of the major flaws is that the$700 IRS penalty it imposes on those without insurance is likely a savings from the cost of any plan in the vaunted health insurance exchange.where individual policies will likely cost $1500 or more a month. In addition, as there is a severe shortage of physicians and no requirement that they take Medicaid or exchange patients, there is a very likely scenario that individiuals who are currently without insurance now could conceivably have new Medicaid coverage via Obamacare…and nowhere to go taht accepts it. What then?

Harry Truman was one of the best presidents in the last century. Didn’t mind to tell someone to their face that they were a lying SOB. Said he never trusted Nixon because he was shifty eyed and couldn’t tell the truth. Kinda like someone running for president today.
VA health care added ten years to my father’s life before he died. They did open heart surgery on him at age 85 when his privately run health care plan refused to pay.Best run health care system in the country.
Have to wonder if their even will be a Veterans Affairs system if the chickenhawk draft dodger gets elected. His party has decided that disabled veterans are victims and moochers. Think of th emoney we could save if we cut them off from benefits!

Obama responded by repeating the admonitions about not tolerating violence, but continued to discuss the incident in the context of the controversial video depicting scenes from the life of Mohammed.

Just like Obama deserves the condemnation he is getting from most Americans for his over reaching takeover of our healthcare system. His real goal is Single Payor which is true for most liberals. Now three and a half years into the Obama administration we can see that his solutions for America haven’t worked, aren’t working and won’t work. His policies have simply failed. Good point Jay,
Harry Truman was, most likely a socialist.
He definitely WAS a small town insurance salesman in way over his head in government. He got us into the Korean war without a plan to either get us out or win. He oversaw the almost complete destruction of our military such that when he sent units to Korea they were so understrength, underarmed and undertrained that they were overwhelmed and pushed almost totally out of Korea by an armed mob using 19th century tactics. He refused to listen to his own chosen and experienced military commanders and eventually fired the greatest military mind ever in the US Army.
Yes, you are quite correct, he does have lots in common with the disaster we how have in the Whitehouse!
He did do one great thing, he oversaw the building of the porch over the entry alcove to the front of the Whitehouse. That’s one up on Obama!

No, he hates capitalism and the only capitlistic things he does believe in are those that the government can control. Obama’s words speak for themselves. He does not like America and he does not like free enterprise. So Jay, you can try to tell yourself that his way is the best way but I say again, you are not a journalist but a propagandist for a distributionist socialist president. Interesting you should cast a backward glance to Truman at a time when the slightest collateral damage in one of current wars is roundly condemned and grist for political attacks. Bush is considered by some to be a “war criminal” because civilians died in some of aerial and ground attacks in both wars, but Truman is a fondly remembered as one of our greatest presidents despite having killed hundreds of thousands of civilians.

I am not making any judgements, but only an observation. You can’t have it both ways or apply two standards.

He oversaw the almost complete destruction of our military such that when he sent units to Korea they were so understrength, underarmed and undertrained that they were overwhelmed and pushed almost totally out of Korea by an armed mob using 19th century tactics.”

oldguy, you’re either uninformed or dishonestly misrepresenting the truth.

Point #1 — We entered the Korean War after a UN Security Council vote unanimously condemned the invasion of the South by the North and recommended that member UN States provide military aid to South Korea.

Point #2 — There were 21 member States *besides* the US that participated, providing nearly a million men and women in support of the effort.

Point #3 — As far as units being understrength goes, I’m sure you’re aware that the Korean War took place only a few years after the conclusion of WWII — a period marked by massive demobilization of armed forces and the wholesale conversion of military materiel production facilities back into civilian factories and manufacturing plants. And guess who approved the cuts in spending for manpower and materiel acquisitions? That’s right, CONGRESS. Truman couldn’t spend one red cent that Congress didn’t appropriate.

Point #4 — Armed mob with 19th Century tactics? Try massively OUTNUMBERING the UN and ROK forces. North Korea’s forces by themselves were only about a division or so fewer in number than the US forces (the single biggest foreign contributor of manpower to the South Korean side) and the Chinese had *twice* the men in the field that the US did. If you want a chilling account of the human wave attacks during Korea from a grunt’s perspective, I commend to your reading About Face by David Hackworth.

Maybe you’ve never studied that period’s military history, but I have — and it’s plain to me that you just don’t know jack about it.

I guess that means he actually believes that democracy should somehow be constrained and take a backseat to some leftist ideology of re-distribution. You know, let the people vote just as long as their vote doesn’t mean anything and the government has the last say. As I said, Obama is at the very least a far left socialist bordering on communist and his own words prove it. He actually comes off in this video sounding like that he believes America needs itself a leftist dictator of the South American persuasion. Look for this video to start flying in the next few days.

For all you ;lovers of the VA Health system, As a Vietnam vet (607th MP’s Siagon 1968) I can testify from experience, it is crap! The Mds, in general, are poorly trained, undersupervised, and could care less about the patients. Medicines are in short supply and not always available when needed (I gave up years ago in getting my Lantus injectors for my insulin for them as they are always out). They have tried to substitute meds for my prescribed meds that my local Dr and friend has told my will be useless in the treatment of my BP and diabetes problems. I was told it would be 6 months before I could get a Steroid shot in my knee (My local Md got it for me the next day under my personal medical insurance). I don’t even bother to go to the VA anymore, I have NO confidence in them.

In fairness, it must be said that one can hear varying assessments of the VA – I guess depending upon what care is needed. Point 1 and 2 – What do they have to do with Truman and his shortcomings?
Point 3 – And who controlled that Congress, Truman Democrats. and BTW Obama seems to have no problems spending and/of cutting Trillions of dollars without going to congress.
Point 4 – The Chinese Communist army was largely made up of farmer/peasants and not professional soldiers. And their Cadre of NCOs were, in many cases, unable to read or write. They were experienced in war as they had recently pushed the Nationalists under Chang out of China (into Formosa) without Truman lifting a finger to help (he did send the 7th Fleet to keep the Communists from invading Formosa). Their tactics were very similar to the Russians in WW2, Throw masses of men at the enemy, reguardless of losses, until he was overrun.

Health care is not really competitive right now – it has been operating more like a monopoly than anything. That’s the problem. Compare it to eye care. The government doesn’t have to take over running health care to fix that. Simple legislation should, in my view, be able to do the job. Heaven or Hell

While walking down the street one day a Corrupt
Senator (that may be redundant) was tragically
hit by a car and died.

His soul arrives in heaven and is met by St. Peter
at the entrance.

“Welcome to heaven,” says St. Peter. “Before
you settle in, it seems there is a problem. We
seldom see a high official around these parts,
you see, so we’re not sure what to do with you.”

“No problem, just let me in,” says the Senator.

“Well, I’d like to, but I have orders from the
higher ups. What we’ll do is have you spend
one day in hell and one in heaven. Then you
can choose where to spend eternity.”

“Really?, I’ve made up my mind. I want to be
in heaven,” says the Senator.

“I’m sorry, but we have our rules.”

And with that, St. Peter escorts him to the
elevator and he goes down, down, down to hell.

The doors open and he finds himself in the middle
of a green golf course.

In the distance is a clubhouse and standing in
front of it are all his friends and other politicians
who had worked with him.

Everyone is very happy and in evening dress.
They run to greet him, shake his hand, and
reminisce about the good times they had while
getting rich at the expense of the people.

They played a friendly game of golf and then
dine on lobster, caviar and the finest champagne.

Also present is the devil, who really is a very
friendly guy who is having a good time dancing
and telling jokes.

They are all having such a good time that before
the Senator realizes it, it is time to go.

Everyone gives him a hearty farewell and waves
while the elevator rises.

The elevator goes up, up, up and the door reopens
In heaven where

St. Peter is waiting for him, “Now it’s time to visit
heaven…

So, 24 hours passed with the Senator joining a
group of contented souls moving from cloud to
cloud, playing the harp and singing. They have a
good time and, before he realizes it, the 24 hours
have gone by and St. Peter returns.

“Well, then, you’ve spent a day in hell and another
in heaven. Now choose your eternity.”

The Senator reflects for a minute, then he answers:
“Well, I would never have said it before, I mean
heaven has been delightful, but I think I would be better off in hell.”

So St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he
goes down, down, down to hell…

Now the doors of the elevator open and he’s in
the middle of a barren land covered with waste
and garbage.

He sees all his friends, dressed in rags, picking
up the trash and putting it in black bags as more trash falls to the ground.

The devil comes over to him and puts his arm around his shoulders.

“I don’t understand,” stammers the Senator.
“Yesterday I was here and there was a golf
course and clubhouse, and we ate lobster and
caviar, drank champagne, and danced and had
a great time. Now there’s just a wasteland full of
garbage and my friends look miserable. What happened?”

The devil smiles at him and says,
“Yesterday we were campaigning,

Today, you voted..”

No one is perfect. Truman is still one of the greatest presidents that this country has ever produced. A true leader with a plan who overcame enormous obstacles with the military by firing it’s most popular general, led whole recovery of Western Europe after the war and having the vision to integrate the military. Not sure how he would have felt about gays in the military service but that will have to wait for another day. David McCullough’s biography of Truman has to be one of the best reads of the century. His military record in WW1 was nothing short of amazing. And to top that, when he retired from the WH, he took a pension of $17,500/yr and refused free postage and also refused to give speeches for payment. Said it dirtied the image of the presidency. A true patriot like we have not had in some time. If Bozo could be half the man Truman was, he would be a genius.

DC has spun the “it would have been much worse” just like Bush spun the reasons for invasion of Iraq. To be blindly beholden to the prior or current administration is rather funny to observe.

Real economic growth during the recovery – now three years old – has averaged 2.2%, less than half of the historic average for post recession rebounds

There are 1.1 million fewer people on non-farm payrolls today than when President Obama took office.

If the labor force participation rate had remained unchanged, the unemployment rate would now be above 11%.

There are asshats who say, “He’s not MY President.” Like they are some sort of Island or something. The truth is, no matter WHO gets elected he is MY President. It doesn’t matter whether I voted for him or not, he is STILL my President and was fairly elected under the Constitution of the US.

All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you name it. That that’s an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what…. These are people who pay no income tax. Forty-seven percent of Americans pay no income tax. So our message of low taxes doesn’t connect. So he’ll be out there talking about tax cuts for the rich. I mean, that’s what they sell every four years. And so my job is not to worry about those people. I’ll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives.”

oldgy, there is no doubt that many GIs have gotten a raw deal in the VA system.

No system is perfect. Especially one that is gargantuan. It serves more than six million veterans via152 hospitals; 800 community based outpatient clinics; 126 nursing home care units; and 35 domiciliaries.

And in spite of your experience, the fact remains that it for countless veterans it has been top notch, Grade A, industrial strength, kickass health care.

The Gold Standard.

The VA offers the “gold standard” in surgical care, a model that is being adapted to the private sector, said Darrell Campbell Jr., M.D., at the University of Michigan

And I salute them every single time I drive past that hospital on Clairmont Avenue. I will never stop singing their praises. Never.

Thank you to the doctors, nurses, staff and volunteers – the best of the best! And a salute to General Shinseke, among many others, who have served us well.

Romney pivots after controversies distract campaign.

Washington (CNN) — Republican challenger Mitt Romney tweaked his campaign strategy twice this week in an attempt to refocus the election debate on President Barack Obama’s record after controversial remarks that brought criticism from both his Democratic opponent and some GOP colleagues.

The Romney team has struggled to build momentum after a grueling primary race, stymied at times by self-inflicted wounds that have helped fuel a Democratic depiction of the multimillionaire former businessman as being out-of-touch with working-class Americans.

Last week, Romney came under fire for an initially incorrect statement that criticized the Obama administration in the aftermath of assaults on U.S. diplomatic compounds in Egypt and Libya on the anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Issued before it was known that the Libyan attack by armed militants killed U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans, Romney complained about how the American embassy in Egypt responded, even though the embassy statement he referenced came out before the assault took place.

“The comments are very unfortunate,” said Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine. “It clearly isn’t helpful and it’s surprising that a disciplined candidate would make those kind of comments.”

Three GOP Senate candidates in tough races this fall have distanced themselves from Romney’s comments. Sen. Dean Heller, R-Nevada, told CNN on Wednesday that he had “a very different view of the world” than what Romney expressed.

“As a United States senator, I think I represent everybody, and I think every vote is important,” Heller said, adding: “I don’t write off anybody.”

A day earlier, Republican Sen. Scott Brown of Massachusetts and GOP candidate Linda McMahon of Connecticut released campaign statements denouncing Romney’s comments.

Washington (CNN) – A new poll out of Wisconsin this week shows Republican Senate candidate Tommy Thompson suddenly falling behind in his race against Democrat Tammy Baldwin.

Thompson is blaming the slip, in part, on the rocky campaign of Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney.

“The presidential thing is bound to have an impact on every election,” Thompson told Madison television station WKOW on Wednesday. “You know, whether you’re a Democrat or Republican. If you’re a standard-bearer for the presidency is not doing well, it’s going to reflect on the down ballot.”

You pay Drs and hospitals less for their services and many (the ones who are good enough to make it on their own) are going to drop service to us Medicare patients; my Dr has already quit taking new Medicare/medicaid patients and he says he will have to quit providing medical services to those of us who are Medicare users if they lower his reimbursement. Agreed. But I do have first hand experience with this particular segment (I know someone who owns and rents a good number of houses to such women) so that is the example I used. And from what I can see, it is an abuse. No doubt there are other kinds of people living off the dole in other ways. I did not mean to exclude them.

“The children of whom you are complaining are in this situation through no fault of their own. Would you favor cutting them off from public assistance?”

I would favor the government underwriting the costs of adoption so such kids (or those who might otherwise be aborted) could grow up in an environment that gives them a good shot at having a good and productive life. A lot of these kids are “learning” a lot of counter-productive things and are half fated to repeat the failures of their mother (and the men who come and go from her life).

The school on Little House on the Prairie was a private school and it served everyone. The whole community pitched in and paid for a teacher based on what they could afford and it was all working just fine until Obama came along. Then the added cost of providing separate facilities and lunchrooms and wagon buses with back seats was just too much for the town so they abandoned the private school model and opted in to the public education system and it has been down hill ever since. Just ask any Republican and they’ll tell you it’s the truth.

I don’t so much have THE solution as I have an understanding that there is a problem that needs to be resolved – and not ignored with people throwing up their hands in defeat. I am an engineer by profession and engineers solve problems – not run away from them or let them persist year after year, decade after decade.

I can tell you that there is a lot of partying, drinking, promiscuity and keeping up with the Jones’ (in terms of large screen HD televisions, cell phones, music systems and the like) in these homes. There isn’t much of a family structure there to begin with. So maybe the government could start by checking in on these recipients at their homes and demanding some kind of responsibility and accountability. Drug testing was a first step towards this in some states. It had a LOT of opposition (go figure) from some quarters.

On your side, if liberals are unwilling to take some strong steps to correct the problem, then it only proves they are not serious about solving it.

One man’s opinion but worth listening to ………. echos of Nam:

Ex-Navy SEAL: “This ‘moron’ endangering lives”

“Training Iraqis and Afghans to maintain western-style security is a waste of time and U.S. military leaders are so afraid of offending people that they refuse to do what’s necessary to win.

That’s the thesis of a very blunt book by former U.S. Navy SEAL Carl Higbie, entitled “Battle on the Homefront: A Navy SEAL’s Mission to Save the American Dream.”

Is He Lying To You?1) Search His E-Mail Address 2) See Hidden Pics & Social Profiles Now! Spokeo.com/Uncover-Liars
Background ChecksAmerica’s most Trusted source for In-Depth Background Checks http://www.S2verify.com

Higbie tells us of his two tours in Iraq and the stunningly inept Iraqis he was ordered to train.

“It was unfathomable how dumb the people were over there,” Higbie told WND. “It’s difficult to get them to do basic tasks such as reading a map or doing jumping jacks. And we’re giving them guns!”

He says simple concepts are impossible for them to grasp, so expecting loyalty to a Western nation or thinking they will comprehend a security strategy is a waste of time.

“They don’t reason like us, they don’t think like us. They’re not capable of learning complex things, especially loyalties to Western democracy.”

Higbie served in Iraq under President Bush in 2007 and in 2009 under President Obama. He claims there was a “night and day” difference in policy, including the Obama administration directive that U.S. troops not carry live ammunition.

“They want to tie your hands as soldiers so they don’t have an ‘incident.’”

Higbie says these rules of engagement are handcuffing our forces and preventing them from winning wars.

In fact, the ex-SEAL saves his harshest criticisms for military leaders for agreeing to wage a culturally sensitive war to win hearts and minds rather than kill our enemies.

“We need to fight to win or come home.”

He specifically lashes out at Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey, calling him a “moron” for not fighting to change policies on joint security patrols in Afghanistan until Afghans had killed more than 50 of our own troops.

Higbie recounts how misguided rules of engagement put his own life in danger, how his book led to his dismissal from the U.S. Navy and what the response has been from officers and enlisted personnel.”

They love Bozo, the one person “with a Muslim background” that could put us on better footing with these idiots. All of those posters that they burned with some guy that looked like Alfred E Newman with the missing tooth just couldn’t be Bozo. Nah. Must be some mistake.

That won’t faze a liberal one bit – some like DDR say we shouldn’t care who (or what) the POTUS sleeps with (even if he is married with children) and how many times he does it. He is not dishonoring his position as world leader by having sex and committing adultery in the Oval Office with a woman who could be his daughter. There is no chance of blackmail in such cases. Shoot, he may have let the dog hump his leg for all DDR cares. NO BIG DEAL. But let a candidate for office not release 10 years of tax returns and THEN (in her twisted mind) he is not acting “above reproach”. And you thought to ask her if she had a point? Scout,

When my brother was in Iraq the big issue he had was with the pay and the greed of the Iraqi officers. At first we would pay the officers and they would then disburse payments to the Iraqi enlisted men. When it was found out that the Iraqi officers were keeping most of the money and paying the enlisted men a pittance the U.S. officers had to step in directly and pay the officers and then pay the enlisted men their due wages to make damn sure they got paid. I still have some hope for the Iraqis allthough they are still a bunch of backward ass folk but as for the Afghans there is no hope for their sort of backwardess. Those folks are beyond help.

Most of the Republicans involved in sexual trysts have left office (or never get elected initially or again – as with Cain and Gingrich). There are always exceptions. “That was the most useless, worthless briefing that I have attended in a long time. Believe me, there is more written in every major and minor publication in America about what happened.” said Senate Foreign Relations Committee member Bob Corker (R-TN), emerging from the all-senators briefing that included Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Deputy Secretary of Defense Ash Carter, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, and Joint Chiefs Vice Chairman Adm. Mitt Romney’s campaign handed out $112,500 in bonuses to four of its top staffers, according to new disclosure records filed Thursday.

[...]

The bonuses came the day after Romney formally accepted the Republican presidential nomination at the party’s convention in Tampa. Despite strong fundraising since May, new records show that the campaign was struggling badly for money in August because it had run low on primary funds and was unable to tap into contributions collected for the general election until after the nomination. Instead, the campaign borrowed $20 million.

A business model where a failing business is loaded up with debt which is in turn doled out in fees to senior staff before the whole thing comes crashing down around their ears? This is unheard of.

I’m not buying that 99.99%. That 99.99% may not wage terrorist bombings against us but there is no doubt that they don’t like us and are against us in principle. When Pakistan announces that tomorrow is a national holiday so that the entire nation can protest against us please don’t give me this crap that 99.99% of them are friendly to us or even tolerant of us. They are not.

All true. But we’re not in the year 1300. What happened many centuries ago I don’t give a damn about. It has nothing to do with the here and now. If we all spent our lives engaging in recriminations about shyte that happened 8 centuries ago then how would humans ever progress. Ahkmed and Akbar are still pissed at each other because akbar’s great great grandfather from 40 generations ago stole a goat from Akhemd’s great great grandfather. Mick,

I agree with your 11:01. The problem I see though is that those uneducated mobs are the majority of the population in the poorer Middle eastern nations.

And even then I wonder. I remember watching a 60 minutes episode in which they visited Kuwaiti college students 10 years after the first Gulf War. It was nothing short of disgusting. These spoiled beyotches blamed the U.S. for there not being enough jobs for Kuwaiti young people. To them a job is starting off as a mid level manager at a white collar firm. Kuwait like Saudi Arabia I think imports most of its labor because most jobs like restaurant jobs and every day blue collar jobs are beneath them. They blamed us for oil not being priced high enough to where they could live even more opulently then they already did. These were wealthy college kids but the idea was the same even they would had bailed their asses out 10 years earlier. They were not in the least bit grateful to the U.S. and they blamed us for most of their problems which were few to begin with. Those folks dislike us no matter what.

“William, you are so blind and so incredibly foolish that you think that YOU are the arbiter of these matters and NOT the Torah and Talmud. Nor the countless rabbis who have studied, pondered and considered this very question for hundred and hundreds of years.”

First of all, genius, anyone has the right to reason and make judgements about things – as you demonstrated when you (ironically and now – in the face of your continued insistence otherwise – hypocritically) presumed to define what a Christian is (need that link to your post again?). I never said I was THE arbiter of who was and was not a Jew. Indeed, I do NOT run a certification organization for Jews – got it? I expressed by belief and it upset you. Too bad.

I will bet top dollar I know the Torah a whole better than you do. The Torah stipulates a lot of requirements that are not even close to being observed by most Jews today – especially in America. For instance, it says that you must, as a male, be circumcised on the 8th day in order to enter into a covenantal relationship with God. While most Jews – secular or not – unthinkingly observe this practice, some have not (http://www.npr.org/2012/08/22/159807599/some-israeli-parents-rethink-ritual-circumcision.).

The Talmud is a collection of teachings based upon the Torah which are mere extrapolations that may or may not be correct in their interpretation or application of the Torah. These kind of secondary, supplemental writings occur in almost every religion and to me don’t amount to much of anything. But that is another subject

“It is truly beyond belief that you are actually doubling down on your stupid.”

Mirror, mirror on the wall….

“It is almost pathetic to watch you as you have desperately scrambled around the Internet over the past week to learn a few things about Judaism and Jewish scholars.”

Huh? I don’t require Jewish “scholars” to back me up. My conclusion is a logical deduction from my knowledge of the Torah. Secular Jews are make little no attempt to observe the Torah itself (except possibly income coincidental way) and so the Torah would say they should be “cut off”.

Since before we even had the debate at hand we were discussing the reason for the liberalism of Jews, I thought the other day to look into this question for the first time. And I presented you with one of the articles I found. You, stupidly, thought I was “scrambling” around somehow to defend my position. I don’t need to do that. I can simply read the Torah as it stands, unchanged for thousands of years, and figure out who is real Jew and who isn’t. And secular Jews don’t make the cut. It is that simple. They are biologically Jews, but that is like saying you have something in common with your sperm donor father you have never met.

“You are no intellectual.”

Of course not. Again, no one on this blog is.

Sorry for it being so late of a reply, got busy.

Anyway calm down! That’s 1st

Where to begin????
Well I guess we should start with your unfounded claim that I spout off the 47% stuff. I don’t.
So we have established your tendency towards overreacting, placing those with whom you disagree with into simple groups, or you are a failed circus mind reader?

See when i hear the 47% don’t do this or that I see it as more of symbolic reference to symbolize all of those whom do abuse the system or those who do indeed have a sense of entitlement. To entertain the idea that there are not people out there doing that shows ones ignorance to the situation.
See when I hear that 47% thrown out there I do not think of military personnel along with many other hard working people. I especially see those in combat or those disabled through their service have paid ANY and ALL debt to this society of ours. Therefore I cannot place them into that category.

I don’t think that makes me a republican or a democrat rather it makes me an intellectual thinking being. Who understands that two human beings can hear te exact same thing and take away two entirely different understandings. And neither one of them have to be wrong or right. I also happen to think ones ones doesn’t make them a bad person. It is their actions and what is in their heart that determines that.

Do you honestly believe Mitt Romney thinks that Combat Vets are Moochers?
Or could he have just simple been using the 47% as representation for the above mentioned group.

Now a debate can be had about the actual percentage of those abusing the system? My guess would be higher than the dems thinks and lower than the repubs think.

And there is no debate poor judgement was used by Mitt Romney in saying what he said but does that mean that he truly thinks combat vets are moochers? Come on!

When you do that you are as simple as Rush and Hannity and all the others you called out.

Oldguy — “Ok Joe,
Point 1 and 2 – What do they have to do with Truman and his shortcomings?”

You mean the shortcomings you *alleged* while simultaneously ignoring the functional changes happening to the military at the time?

“Point 3 – And who controlled that Congress, Truman Democrats.”

Truman Democrats does not equal Truman. I get it. you don’t like Truman. That’s fine as far as it goes, but sharpen your aim.

“and BTW Obama seems to have no problems spending and/of cutting Trillions of dollars without going to congress.”

Yawn. If you want to make a political point then make it. If you want to talk about war, then talk about it. Make up your mind.

“Point 4 – The Chinese Communist army was largely made up of farmer/peasants and not professional soldiers.”

So was the US Army of the time. The draft was still in operation, if you’ll recall.

“And their Cadre of NCOs were, in many cases, unable to read or write. They were experienced in war as they had recently pushed the Nationalists under Chang out of China (into Formosa) without Truman lifting a finger to help (he did send the 7th Fleet to keep the Communists from invading Formosa). Their tactics were very similar to the Russians in WW2, Throw masses of men at the enemy, reguardless of losses, until he was overrun.”

Deride it if you wish, but it seemed to work pretty damn well for them for a while.

“I served with some Korean war vets in Nam, and BTW I have a masters degree in history from UNCCH, specialized in 19th and 20 century history.”

You also have a big chip on your shoulder about Democrats, too, and I’m pretty sure that’s coloring your opinions here.

Towncrier — “Liberals are guilty”

Thanks for clearly indicating your raison du etre. It’s always helpful for us to know EXACTLY what others think of us.

“of focusing on those making up that 47% who are not actually unfairly or wrongly dependent up on the government in perhaps an effort to ignore or draw attention away from those who are.”

Please quantify “unfairly or wrongly dependent on the government.” How many Americans are we talking about? Who are they?

“I happen to know from first hand experience there are scores and scores of unmarried mothers of children from a number of fathers who are on the dole – plain and simple. THAT is who Romney is really talking about and liberals know it.”

Then let him find his stones and SAY it.

“So they deflect, as they are prone to do.”

Because conservatives waffle, equivocate and use weasel words, as they are prone to do.
