Ol’ Harry Truman was a dirty socialist? Who knew?

220px-Harry-truman

President Harry Truman

A reader, the daughter of a now-deceased reporter for the Atlanta Journal, was digging through some old files of her father’s and came across something that she thought I might find interesting. She was right.

It’s a clip of a story written by her father, Odom Fanning, in 1949, reporting on a debate sponsored by the Gate City Lodge of B’nai Brith. Read the first two paragraphs alone, and you get the flavor of the piece. The parallels with today’s debate on health care are uncanny, missing only a reference to Marxist anti-colonial Kenyans out to destroy this country from within.

The president pushing the program at the time was Harry Truman, the man who had dropped the A-bomb on Japan and who, a year later, would commit U.S. troops to a land war in Asia, trying to block the invasion of South Korea by North Korean and Chinese communists.

those crazy Germans……… engineering a better system than either DEMS or REPS can come up with

Healthcare in GermanyFrom Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Germany has a universal multi-payer health care system with two main types of health insurance: “Law-enforced health insurance” (Gesetzliche Krankenversicherung) known as sickness funds and “Private” (Private Krankenversicherung).[1][2][3]

Compulsory insurance applies to those below a set income level and is provided through private non-profit “sickness funds” at common rates for all members, and is paid for with joint employer-employee contributions. Provider compensation rates are negotiated in complex corporatist social bargaining among specified autonomously organized interest groups (e.g. physicians’ associations) at the level of federal states (Länder). The sickness funds are mandated to provide a wide range of coverages and cannot refuse membership or otherwise discriminate on an actuarial basis. Small numbers of persons are covered by tax-funded government employee insurance or social welfare insurance. Persons with incomes above the prescribed compulsory insurance level may opt into the sickness fund system, which a majority do, or purchase private insurance. Private supplementary insurance to the sickness funds of various sorts is available.

In 2005, Germany spent 10.7% of GDP on health care, or US$3,628 per capita. According to the World Health Organization, Germany’s health care system was 77% government-funded and 23% privately funded as of 2004[4]. In 2004 Germany ranked thirtieth in the world in life expectancy (78 years for men). It had a very low infant mortality rate (4.7 per 1,000 live births), and it was tied for eighth place in the number of practicing physicians, at per 1,000 people (3.3). In 2001 total spending on health amounted to 10.8 percent of gross domestic product

It’s the same ol’ same ol’, Jay. Without the profit motive to repay their campaign donors, Republicans won’t like anything and will find anyway they can to try to make it all about them. I mean, may God help the health-care program that merely breaks even, or, may God forbid, holds down costs like Obamacare does.

But it reminds me of a campaign speech FDR made in ‘36, in which he soundly ridiculed this Republican tendency to try to make it all about them. It’s too funny, Jay, and a clear indication that this crap with the Republican Party has been going on far too long!

“Let me warn you and let me warn the nation against the smooth evasion that says ‘of course we believe these things. We believe in social security. We believe in work for the unemployed. We believe in saving homes. Cross our hearts and hope to die, we believe in all these things. BUT, we do not like the way the present administration is DOING them! Just turn them over to us. We will do ALL of them. We will do MORE of them. We will do them better! And most important of all, the doing of them will not cost anybody ANYthing.’”

So, the nexus of the debate about government today is what we call people? Socialist or not?

Really?

From the post directly above my writing this by lynnie gal: “plutocracy/feudalism”. Wow, let’s just debate with absurdity after absurdity. We can get so exceedingly stupid calling Romney in favor of the Divine right of Kings or bringing back the age of Pharoahs—-”Let my people Gooo!”

To these people labels matter more than policy.

Must be a new nadir in political “debate” brought to us by Democrats and the liberal media, and what we ought to expect is most important to the liberal-moron class of voters, the ignoramus driving around Atlanta with NPR on the radio and “Obama 2012″ on his bumper.

At least socialism has a modern meaning that everyone can understand. “Feudalism”???

This is the ol’ straw-man argument that Republicans want anarchy, to sell off fire houses and lay-off policemen and teachers.

At least conservatives are coherent in their arguments.

Moderite Line – “Part of your compensation is your health insurance so unless this is the only company you can work for then it is not a monopoly. As far as the CEO pay although his pay is way to much in my opinion you are being misleading. His total compensation for 5 years was $120 million. 95.8 million of his income was from stock gain.

Also, I provided a link if you do not want him to pay so much right to the owners of the companies which are provided in the link below.”
++++++++++++++++++
No M. Line, I have to pay $500 a month for 80-20% coverage.

So if I don`t like the coverage, just change companies? Brilliant! Why didn`t I think of that? Let the bottom feeding insurance companies wag the dog.

$120,000,000 in 5 years is OK, M. Line? The man has not touched a band aid!
Oh, but most of this composition is stock options.

My father, who also sustained blood clots in his lungs and legs, was also treated by the VA, and he was most appreciative of the excellent care he received there. With a blood thinner and monitoring routine that he followed very carefully, he survived an additional 32 years. He died at age 80 in 2000.

What exactly are you reaching for? Where does this say Harry Truman was a socialist? This is an article about universal health care, Harry Truman was obviously in favor, especially for the aged (he was the first Medicare enrollee in the 1960s, correct)?
The idea of universal health care was to reduce fear and keep you covered in case of emergency, just as Social Security was set up to keep elderly people from starving in the 1930s. SS was NEVER envisioned to be a 1-2:1 payee to receiver ratio like today with it paying for all sorts of stuff. Plus the average life expectancy wasn’t even 65 then.
And health care meant you got treatment if you were very, very sick. It wasn’t that someone weighed 325 pounds (no one weighed that much back then, just look at pictures) and went to the doctor because they had high blood pressure, aching joints, etc. and expected to have a pill cure their ills.

Not even Apples and Oranges. The world was much simpler then and people didn’t routinely live into their 80s/90s and have DECADES of medical care provided for them at little or no cost (Medicare payments in don’t even come close to covering cost of the program).

What people don’t seem to understand is that Obamacare is about access and insurance reform, NOT health care reform or cost containment. One of the major flaws is that the$700 IRS penalty it imposes on those without insurance is likely a savings from the cost of any plan in the vaunted health insurance exchange.where individual policies will likely cost $1500 or more a month. In addition, as there is a severe shortage of physicians and no requirement that they take Medicaid or exchange patients, there is a very likely scenario that individiuals who are currently without insurance now could conceivably have new Medicaid coverage via Obamacare…and nowhere to go taht accepts it. What then?

Don’t bother. Sowell’s long past his Sell By Date and has largely descended into hey-you-damn-kids-get-offa-my-lawnism, whereas Chesterton’s generally only good for a laugh or two. That said, if you’ve decided to rely on hope as your mechanism as you indicated, then it seems that you won’t be voting for that no-hoper Romney, now will you? After all, “Hope” wasn’t his slogan.

Just like Obama deserves the condemnation he is getting from most Americans for his over reaching takeover of our healthcare system. His real goal is Single Payor which is true for most liberals. Good point Jay,
Harry Truman was, most likely a socialist.
He definitely WAS a small town insurance salesman in way over his head in government. He got us into the Korean war without a plan to either get us out or win. He oversaw the almost complete destruction of our military such that when he sent units to Korea they were so understrength, underarmed and undertrained that they were overwhelmed and pushed almost totally out of Korea by an armed mob using 19th century tactics. He refused to listen to his own chosen and experienced military commanders and eventually fired the greatest military mind ever in the US Army.
Yes, you are quite correct, he does have lots in common with the disaster we how have in the Whitehouse!
He did do one great thing, he oversaw the building of the porch over the entry alcove to the front of the Whitehouse. That’s one up on Obama!

Obama is a socialist bordering on marxist and this video proves it. He does not believe in the thing (Capitalism and free enterprise) that has made a modern entitlement state possible in this country wherein even our poorest live better than 95% of the rest of the world. No, he hates capitalism and the only capitlistic things he does believe in are those that the government can control. Obama’s words speak for themselves. He does not like America and he does not like free enterprise. So Jay, you can try to tell yourself that his way is the best way but I say again, you are not a journalist but a propagandist for a distributionist socialist president. You, like so many of those enamoured of socialism or whatever leftist definition you want to put on it don’t even dare question anything Obama has done. Nothing. You are not to be taken seriously.

Interesting you should cast a backward glance to Truman at a time when the slightest collateral damage in one of current wars is roundly condemned and grist for political attacks. Bush is considered by some to be a “war criminal” because civilians died in some of aerial and ground attacks in both wars, but Truman is a fondly remembered as one of our greatest presidents despite having killed hundreds of thousands of civilians.

I am not making any judgements, but only an observation. You can’t have it both ways or apply two standards.

oldguy — “He got us into the Korean war without a plan to either get us out or win. He oversaw the almost complete destruction of our military such that when he sent units to Korea they were so understrength, underarmed and undertrained that they were overwhelmed and pushed almost totally out of Korea by an armed mob using 19th century tactics.”

oldguy, you’re either uninformed or dishonestly misrepresenting the truth.

Point #1 — We entered the Korean War after a UN Security Council vote unanimously condemned the invasion of the South by the North and recommended that member UN States provide military aid to South Korea.

Point #2 — There were 21 member States *besides* the US that participated, providing nearly a million men and women in support of the effort.

Point #3 — As far as units being understrength goes, I’m sure you’re aware that the Korean War took place only a few years after the conclusion of WWII — a period marked by massive demobilization of armed forces and the wholesale conversion of military materiel production facilities back into civilian factories and manufacturing plants. And guess who approved the cuts in spending for manpower and materiel acquisitions? That’s right, CONGRESS. Truman couldn’t spend one red cent that Congress didn’t appropriate.

Point #4 — Armed mob with 19th Century tactics? Try massively OUTNUMBERING the UN and ROK forces. North Korea’s forces by themselves were only about a division or so fewer in number than the US forces (the single biggest foreign contributor of manpower to the South Korean side) and the Chinese had *twice* the men in the field that the US did. If you want a chilling account of the human wave attacks during Korea from a grunt’s perspective, I commend to your reading About Face by David Hackworth.

Maybe you’ve never studied that period’s military history, but I have — and it’s plain to me that you just don’t know jack about it.

And notice in the video that Obama say he believes in Democracy with a “small d”. I guess that means he actually believes that democracy should somehow be constrained and take a backseat to some leftist ideology of re-distribution. You know, let the people vote just as long as their vote doesn’t mean anything and the government has the last say. As I said, Obama is at the very least a far left socialist bordering on communist and his own words prove it. He actually comes off in this video sounding like that he believes America needs itself a leftist dictator of the South American persuasion. Look for this video to start flying in the next few days.

For all you ;lovers of the VA Health system, As a Vietnam vet (607th MP’s Siagon 1968) I can testify from experience, it is crap! The Mds, in general, are poorly trained, undersupervised, and could care less about the patients. Medicines are in short supply and not always available when needed (I gave up years ago in getting my Lantus injectors for my insulin for them as they are always out). They have tried to substitute meds for my prescribed meds that my local Dr and friend has told my will be useless in the treatment of my BP and diabetes problems. I was told it would be 6 months before I could get a Steroid shot in my knee (My local Md got it for me the next day under my personal medical insurance). I don’t even bother to go to the VA anymore, I have NO confidence in them.
If you love it so much, may I suggest you go back and rent the old Jane Fonda movie (you know, the far right zelot, Hanoi Jane) called “Coming Home”. Very complimentary of the VA health System, and very true to life.

First off, oldguy, thanks for your service is what has to be the worst war we ever got ourselves involved in.

In fairness, it must be said that one can hear varying assessments of the VA – I guess depending upon what care is needed. Probably the best argument against government-run health care is the government’s track record on running other things. Like it or not, competition forces people to treat their customers well and increases consumer value over time.

Ok Joe,
Point 1 and 2 – What do they have to do with Truman and his shortcomings?
Point 3 – And who controlled that Congress, Truman Democrats. and BTW Obama seems to have no problems spending and/of cutting Trillions of dollars without going to congress.
Point 4 – The Chinese Communist army was largely made up of farmer/peasants and not professional soldiers. And their Cadre of NCOs were, in many cases, unable to read or write. They were experienced in war as they had recently pushed the Nationalists under Chang out of China (into Formosa) without Truman lifting a finger to help (he did send the 7th Fleet to keep the Communists from invading Formosa). Their tactics were very similar to the Russians in WW2, Throw masses of men at the enemy, reguardless of losses, until he was overrun.
I served with some Korean war vets in Nam, and BTW I have a masters degree in history from UNCCH, specialized in 19th and 20 century history.

It just seems like I’m never around when great historical events occur.

When our country landed a man on the moon, I was out near the very tip of the Aleutian Islands and missed it. When the Allman Bros. were playing for free at Piedmont Park, I was dealing bombs and projectiles in the Gulf of Tonkin out of the U.S.S. Firedrake, AE14.

So, I go to work today and leave my phone at home, and Mitt makes it through the whole day without a major gaffe?

“My experience with the health care gate keepers — the administrative staff — gainsays that claim.”

Health care is not really competitive right now – it has been operating more like a monopoly than anything. That’s the problem. Compare it to eye care. The government doesn’t have to take over running health care to fix that. Simple legislation should, in my view, be able to do the job. But I DO think there should be a mandate and/or waiver to ensure there are no freeloaders.
