Under President Romney, Mideast would be calm? Really?

From The Washington Post:

Advisers to Mitt Romney on Thursday defended his sharp criticism of President Obama and said that the deadly protests sweeping the Middle East would not have happened if the Republican nominee were president.

“There’s a pretty compelling story that if you had a President Romney, you’d be in a different situation,” Richard Williamson, a top Romney foreign policy adviser, said in an interview. “For the first time since Jimmy Carter, we’ve had an American ambassador assassinated.”

Williamson added, “In Egypt and Libya and Yemen, again demonstrations — the respect for America has gone down, there’s not a sense of American resolve and we can’t even protect sovereign American property.”

I’m sorry: That has to be one of the more ridiculous statements I have seen in a long time. Who’s running this campaign, Honey Boo-Boo?

So we are to believe that Mitt Romney, by the sheer Mitt-normity of his Mitt-strength, would square his Mitt-jaw and single-handedly suppress not just decades, not just centuries, but millenia of seething anger and frustration among hundreds of millions of people in the Islamic world. Their anger and insecurities would all vanish, and the roiling seas would be made calm?

It’s a feat that Ronald Reagan couldn’t perform — the death of 241 Marines in their barracks in Lebanon and the bombing of the U.S. Embassy in Beirut, with another 63 killed, bear clear testimony to his inadequacy. George W. Bush, the hard-bitten Texan, was such a wimp that Islamic terrorists dared to murder thousands of our fellow Americans here on our own soil and launch a dozen attacks against our embassies.

And Barack Obama? As Rush Limbaugh suggested yesterday, Obama is so weak that al Qaida offered up Osama bin Laden as a sacrifice to us, just to ensure that Obama would be re-elected.

Oh, but under the fearsome glare and resolve of the Mitt-y One, all would quake. Because all would know that if they dared to cross the line, His RomniPOTUS would … do what exactly? Smite them with a simple arch of his eyebrow?

P.T. Barnum once claimed that no one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people. The Romney campaign is putting that observation to a very stern test.

Why has the AJC made no reference to all of the reports in other media that the US was warned 24-48 hours in advance of an attack being planned against our Embassy, and did nothing?

All of the reports?

Other media?

Please expound.

I think you may have accidentally stumbled onto something here…. I think many think that American values DOES mean policing the world, sometimes into forcing them to do things the way we do them.

Stevie Ray @ 10:51– you have a point although you are a little off in the details. Obama did not live in the Middle East. He lived from around age 4 to age 10 with his mom and stepdad in Indonesia which is in Southeast Asia. His mom worked for the Ford Foundation on a program then. Otherwise, he had more foreign policy experience than Romney as a candidate but not much. He was on Senate Foreign Affairs, Veterans Affairs and Homeland Security Committees but he was a Senator for such a short period of time it would be inaccurate to claim a whole lot of foreign policy experience before he became President. But he has experience now from OJT and was wise enough to choose and listen to wise foreign policy advisers like Hillary Clinton. Honestly, I don’t know if many Presidents had much foreign policy experience. FDR had been Secy. of the Navy during WWI, Truman was clueless as to even our possession of atomic bomb, LBJ was a domestic policy man, and neither Ford, Carter, Reagan, Clinton, or W had much in the way of prior foreign policy experience. The only ones since WWII who were well-versed in foreign policy were Eisenhower, JFK, Nixon, and Bush, Sr. Obviously, it helped to have a lot of experience but some of those who did not, did well after OJT and some did not.

It’s a nice rhetorical trick Jay. Exaggerate what your opponent said, then say how ridiculous your exaggeration is. There was an implication in the aide’s statement that the assasination wouldn’t have happened. He never said “Mideast would be calm”. That statement is pure Jay Bookman.

Maybe Romney would have paid more attention to security in the embassy since there was some warning of unrest. It’s the way the game is played and it is legitimate. You criticize your opponent for whatever went wrong on his watch and say you would have done better. If you didn’t do this, you wouldn’t be a serious candidate. But of course Jay thinks Romney and his aides should not criticize Obama I guess. It makes sense. His friends and colleagues in the mainstream media sure don’t.

Kudos to you.

Ultimately, what has been revealed through Mitt Romney’s commentary regarding the situation in Libya is the unwavering belief many people have in American exceptionalism. But this is not simply a belief that America is exceptional; it is an arrogant worldview that incorrectly assumes that America can do no wrong and that Americans (even ones who pervert the first amendment with hate speech) are always right, no matter who is killed as a result of their actions—even other Americans.

JamVet: Nope. Nothing is Bush’s fault. He was the bestest ever and deserves to be on Mt. Rushmore…

I disagree. Bush should not have to share glory on Mt Rushmore. Why they should build an entirely new place to glorify him. Perhaps BUSHBUBBLEVILLE. The only news is provided by Fox pundits, everyone gets a flightsuit and a mission accomplished banner for their home. The skies are never cloudy so you can see them twin towers.

I was asking him to show what he claimed yes.

I asked him to show some proof any proof of what he claimed.

Do you not ask for proof of things posters here claim.

Especially given that you have not witnessed what it is the poster is claiming.

I think we should all verify things before we accept them as fact do you not?

Just because I question a statement made by Jay also does not mean I do not believe anything Jay says or writes as you also accused me of.

Blaming America first then apologizing to Muslims shows he is way out of his league.

Wow! The first time a politicial said something to get elected. That is what they do. The real problem is we keep voting for these professional politicians. The only fix is to quite putting Dems and Reps into office. Every election cycle the Dems/Reps play good cop/bad cop to maintain the status quo. It’s a virtual one party system. Without cleaning house there will be no change.

Meat guy, you have that uncanny Republican knack of missing a great deal that is obvious to other people. At least those over the age of about fifteen.

i.e., playing ignorant only gets you so far…

Thanks, DannyX.

Keep, I like it.

But seriously, I am very, very close to forgiving Bush and Cheney for the spectacular – in both terms of quantity and quality – misjudgments. It will take me MUCH longer to forgive their sycophants who still cover up for those debacles. And who would vote those two right back into office if they could.

Speaking of which, too bad Del imploded. He could tell us how much he hates Carter and how JC deserves the blame for getting those troops killed in the Iranian desert but Obama does not deserve the credit for successfully getting OBL.

Its a Republican thing, doncha know?

We need to bring Jimmy Carter out of retirement, and put him in charge of Middle East policy for the Obama admin. Another Nobel Peace Prize winning ignoramus. It’s seems the Nobel gets awarded to politicians that appease and capitulate, which history has shown to not only never work, but actually lead to even greater conflict. If Hitler were still around Obama would have offered him France proactively, instead of just turning their backs, as the world did, when he took Poland. Enough of you ignorant Obama apologists. The economy is in the tank, personal freedoms are being taken away, hundreds of Mexicans have been killed by guns his Admin. bought and shipped there, American companies nationalized for the first time ever, and now, as most predicted, his ME policy is bringing the entire world to the brink. It’s not enough to vote him out, he should be impeached!

Well, y’all can raise cain about what’s happening in Libya if you want to, but I’m paying pretty close attention to a Moral Crisis. Some French mag snapped pictures of a topless Princess Kate and published them and the British royal family is suing. That woman is stacked like a brick s__thouse! Anyhow, I don’t know what this evil world is coming to. In the pictures I saw on the innernet tubes you couldn’t see too much because some Richardhead pasted little stars over the most important parts. But it’s just a shameful violation of Privacy!

AU liberal, given the recent turn of events, i.e., GM facing another bankruptcy, and American Embassies in the Middle East again being violated and burned, it would appear the martyrdom of OBL by BHO has kept him very much alive. Your statement, given contemporary enhancement, is completely backwards.
