Advisers to Mitt Romney on Thursday defended his sharp criticism of President Obama and said that the deadly protests sweeping the Middle East would not have happened if the Republican nominee were president.
“There’s a pretty compelling story that if you had a President Romney, you’d be in a different situation,” Richard Williamson, a top Romney foreign policy adviser, said in an interview. “For the first time since Jimmy Carter, we’ve had an American ambassador assassinated.”
Williamson added, “In Egypt and Libya and Yemen, again demonstrations — the respect for America has gone down, there’s not a sense of American resolve and we can’t even protect sovereign American property.”
I’m sorry: That has to be one of the more ridiculous statements I have seen in a long time. Who’s running this campaign, Honey Boo-Boo?
So we are to believe that Mitt Romney, by the sheer Mitt-normity of his Mitt-strength, would square his Mitt-jaw and single-handedly suppress not just decades, not just centuries, but millenia of seething anger and frustration among hundreds of millions of people in the Islamic world. Their anger and insecurities would all vanish, and the roiling seas would be made calm?
It’s a feat that Ronald Reagan couldn’t perform — the death of 241 Marines in their barracks in Lebanon and the bombing of the U.S. Embassy in Beirut, with another 63 killed, bear clear testimony to his inadequacy. George W. Bush, the hard-bitten Texan, was such a wimp that Islamic terrorists dared to murder thousands of our fellow Americans here on our own soil and launch a dozen attacks against our embassies.
And Barack Obama? As Rush Limbaugh suggested yesterday, Obama is so weak that al Qaida offered up Osama bin Laden as a sacrifice to us, just to ensure that Obama would be re-elected.
Oh, but under the fearsome glare and resolve of the Mitt-y One, all would quake. Because all would know that if they dared to cross the line, His RomniPOTUS would … do what exactly? Smite them with a simple arch of his eyebrow?
P.T. Barnum once claimed that no one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people. The Romney campaign is putting that observation to a very stern test.

With Romney as President the middle east would know his position. As it is now, President Obama has strong sympathies for the muslim countries. That is the issue, would Romney have a more objective attitude towards Islam, it is my opinion he would.

There is no moral equivalence between an objectionable film and the murder of diplomats. To argue for same is to accept the ethically-bankrupt pretext for the anti-Americanism latent in the Muslim world.

Ira, 10:33,
All of the ones you mention are random in nature and not necessarily motivated by religious preference, the abortion doctor being an exception. McVey and Nichols were not religious zealots, just pissed off American citizens because of Waco. The Muslim involvement involves entire countries, entire populations and virtually everyone who calls himself/herself a Muslim. Muslims today attacked the German embassy in Sudan. There appears to be some kind of universal hate among these people against the West. We will have to confront it some time in the future. Bush tried and failed in Iraq. Bozo is failing in Afghanistan. The only one who has no choice but confrontation is Bebe. He has a country to protect. Granted, we are beset with a variety of violence that has nothing to do with Islam however, Islam seems to be the one that needs most attention.

No, I don’t think that, but that’s the only thing I have ever kept because people were making that claim here a lot.
You’re the first to actually insist that Jay PROVE that he did something he said he did. It is not possible for me to go back and find when he actually did it and show it to you. And yes, even if I did, you would deny it.
But I’m not wasting my time that way. If you feel like wasting your time with this nonsense, Google “site:blogs.ajc.com” and see if you can figure out the keywords necessary to find Jay’s posts. If you’re able to magically find anything Jay has ever said this way, please share your magic with the rest of us.

What is happening in the world is like the grating of two huge tectonic plates. Our main job is to protect ourselves from the overflow of their discontent. We can’t change their culture any more than they can change ours. The roots go waaaay deep. It may take them generations to make their accommodation to modernity. Think how long it took the US to rid itself of slavery, from the first rumbles of abolitionism to the Civil war. And even after that, racism is dying hard. Technology changes fast, but customary behaviors are extraordinarily tenacious. Consider this: If 200,000 occupying troops of a different culture were assigned to change the folkways of Mississippi, how long do you think it would take for the local good ole boys to stop ambushing them? A hundred years? Two hundred years?

Dear Both @ 10:53, good morning. When Reagan found millions marching in the streets against his nuclear policies, and “star wars” in particular, he adhered to his principles. He did not apologize for calling the Soviet Union an “evil empire” despite the horror “felt” by leftists. When George W Bush found millions protesting his “torture” policies, he refused to apologize for waterboarding the two guys whose disclosures led to the assassination of bin Laden.
We need not worry about such resolution in the current administration, but primary affirmation of American principles is a necessary precondition to the actions necessary thereafter, any time. “A decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them….”

Yet the “debate” always seems to come back to that because facts and data do not dissuade people from something like that. The data rarely seems to work for the right these days, and when it does there is a high probability it is being made up or cherry picked.
To take another example of cherry picked, that 4.5 million jobs thing is cherry picked for sure. Set your start marker at February 2010. That’s nonsense. It’s the same thing as Rand Paul specifically excluding the Postal Service from Federal jobs when he’s trying to make his case that federal employment has grown astronomically under Obama, AFTER first making the point that ALL OF GOVERNMENT has grown astronomically under Obama.

“The Embassy of the United States in Cairo condemns the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims – as we condemn efforts to offend believers of all religions. Today, the 11th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, Americans are honoring our patriots and those who serve our nation as the fitting response to the enemies of democracy. Respect for religious beliefs is a cornerstone of American democracy. We firmly reject the actions by those who abuse the universal right of free speech to hurt the religious beliefs of others.”
About four hours later, crowds began to form and over the next several hours, the protesters stormed the embassy compound, destroyed a U.S. flag and replaced it with an Islamic flag. About three hours later, according to the Washington Examiner, the embassy tweeted, “This morning’s condemnation (issued before protest began) still stands. As does our condemnation of unjustified breach of the Embassy.” (This tweet has disappeared from the Embassy Twitter feed.)

The whole problem started actually in WWII when Ike and others started looking at war as a political game! How to put the best foot forward politically. Again in Korea. Again in Vietnam. Then in Iraq and Afghanistan! What should have been done in all cases is to have allowed the military to do the jobs they have been trained to do, BREAK THINGS AND KILL PEOPLE! THAT IS THE ONLY WAY TO WIN A WAR! In all these cases since WWII, it has only been treated as a political incursion and a police action! Patton was right in WWII about Russia! MacArthur was right in Korea about China! Westmoreland was right in Vietnam when he said let me do my job and this will be over in 6 months! What did that do for him? GOT HIM FIRED BY SOME POLITICALLY MOTIVATED MORON! We should have hit Iraq and Afghanistan with everything available and the situations would have been pacified in 6 months or less! BREAK THINGS AND KILL LOTS OF PEOPLE! THAT IS WHAT AN ARMY IS SUPPOSED TO DO, NOT SIT BACK AND WAIT UNTIL IT IS ATTACKED TO FIRE AT THE ENEMY, NOT TO WAIT ANT TAKE SERIOUS ATTACK TO MAKE SURE SOME CIVILIAN IS NOT IN THE WAY! FIRST THING YOU HAVE TO LEARN IS THAT IN A WAR, THERE ARE NO INNOCENT CIVILIANS!! You know, WE EITHER DO IT NOW, IN THEIR COUNTRIES, WITH ALL FORCES AVAILABLE, OR, WE WILL AT SOME POINT HAVE TO DEFEND OURSELVES HERE ON USA SOIL! Unfortunately, I do not think enough of our citizens will have the courage to defend the country or themselves! …from Politifact;
John Murphy, a communications professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign who studies presidential rhetoric and political language, said Romney was wrong to label it an apology.
“First, the statement does not use the word ‘apology’ or ‘apologize’ and does not use any synonym for that word. There is no statement here that says, ‘We are sorry.’
“Second, the grammar of the statement condemns the actions of a third party. An apology, to be pedantic, is when the first party says to the second party, ‘I have offended you and I am sorry.’ This statement condemns a third party — misguided individuals — that does not officially represent the United States. The term ‘individuals’ dissociates them from the U.S. Therefore, it’s impossible to say that this is an apology from the U.S. to anyone.
“Third, the statement does not apologize for the right of free speech; it affirms it. It condemns those who abuse the right of free speech, but it claims that this is a universal right, as is religious toleration. So, the statement does not like what the misguided individuals said and did, but recognizes they have a right to do it.”
“It’s a condemnation,” Murphy said, “not an apology.”

The essential principle underlaying all other American principles is “individual freedom.”
John Stuart Mill – father of the modern liberal ideology:
Whatever crushes individuality is despotism, by whatever name it may be called and whether it professes to be enforcing the will of God or the injunctions of men.
We have a right, also, in various ways, to act upon our unfavorable opinion of anyone, not to the oppression of his individuality, but in the exercise of ours.
The only purpose for which power can be rightfully exercised over any member of a civilized community, against his will, is to prevent harm to others. His own good, either physical or moral, is not sufficient warrant.

“Rush (Limbaugh) should be arrested for being a terrorist. He must be to know that AQ offered up OBL to relect Obama. I mean he must have a terrorist source for that claim and the others he has made so he must be conspiring with them. Or is his defense “I just make things up to see what my idiot listeners will believe, can you believe how stupid my listeners are?”
What has Limbaugh contributed to intelligent discussion of the issues?
Nothing.

Dear Both @ 11:09, perhaps we can agree that leftists are unwilling to defend American principles if it requires risk or real action. I think conservatives would have little reservation about doing the heavy lifting, e.g., Iraq.

Dittoheads are as absurdly unethical and veracity challenged as their radio master!
The man is the biggest sitting sh*tsorm of prevarications, deceitfulness, dishonesty, distortions, equivocations, falsehoods, fibs, and lies known to modern western civilization, but his fanatical base swears he is as pure as the driven snow and is fact the George Washington of talking heads.
Their cowardice to call him what he is, is, in a word, disgusting…

We should look at the worldview of the 2 candidates. Obummer’s worldview is one of “celebrity”. Rommney”s worldview does include some rational to it. Tough times are ahead. Which do you want: a celebrity president or one that has a little common sense?

Kcin …………. and what camel did you ride in on? Thanks for not answering the question; something libs are good at…… smoke and mirrors. Can’t you admit that Obama had ZERO military experience when he came in to office AND he still has zero military experience? How is that different than Romney? Obama’s on the job training by Nanny Pelosi and Harry Weed nets him a grade of D+ with the military. Recent polls say that a vast majority of active military personnel will not vote Obama. Obama is our 1st “Reality Show” president. To nave to lead.

You made the claim from the beginning that I would not believe the proof even when shown to me.
And that was before I asked you personally for any proof.
Also I never claimed Jay should be unpartisian! That is a claim YOU are projecting onto me.
Jay made a smart azz post about “I wonder why that is?”
All I did was ask him the same question of himself.

Obama’s foreign policy is just like his failed energy policy and his failed economic poilicy- a total disaster. In Obamaland, U.S. allies do not trust us and our enemies do not fear us. In his speech in Cairo in 2009, Obama famously called for Muslims and Americans around the world to have mutual respect for one another. I suppose if Israel attacks Iran, Obama would call his buddies in Syria and Yemen and ask for an econmic boycot or try to put Israel in “timeout”. With the attacks on U.S. embassies this week, Obama’s Middle East strategy is obviously wrong. Tuesday, the New York times ran a shameful op-ed piece attempting to assign blame for 9/11 on Bush because of flawed intelligence data- pure partisan propaganda. Then, new attacks on American embassies around the world occur on 9/11.Uh Oh! What a shocker! You mean Obama’s muslim buddies in the middle East don’t like us and decided to attack us on a random date like 9/11? Who would have guessed that terrorists might find 9/11 significant and that we should beef up protection of Americans on foreign soil?Maybe Obama should go to an intelligence briefing and get caught up with what is going on in the world. Obama’s foreign policy is like his domestic economic poilcy. “It’s not really working right now (I inherited a horrible situation and can’t take blame for anything), but I promise it will get better as soon as THEY start paying for YOU.” Only in the case of his fatal foriegn policy, American citizens are dying. As President, Obama has to accept responsibility for that.

Yep, Mitt “Blood & Guts” Romney will likely get a vast majority 60% and Obama 40%.
Ironic, given that a combat veteran hero and man of inestimable courage and valor, not some pantywaist, quasi-French coward from Massachusetts only got 54% of the military vote in 2008…

Why has the AJC made no reference to all of the reports in other media that the US was warned 24-48 hours in advance of an attack being planned against our Embassy, and did nothing? Why do so many Obama sheeple, who jump on here to comment, use only the AJC fish wrapper as their only source of info? Why is a supposed comment by a candidates advisor, not the candidate himself, even warrant a mention in a political column? It’s because rather than engage in an honest discussion of the Middle East policies of Obama, Bookman chooses the low road of yellow journalism, and instead provokes the members of the Obama apology brigades to weigh in with their usual ignorance. Many many political observers, here in the US and abroad opined that the Obama apology tour of the ME, combined with his sophomoric attempts to personally involve himself in policy, an area where he had no knowledge, would result in exactly what has happened. Throw in his usual narcissistic arrogance, his total lack of ANY leadership qualities, and this leaves us with the sort of mess in the ME unmatched only since when Jimmy Carter facilitated the return of Khomeini to Iran, believing he was a moderate. The Middle East is going to dissolve into violence, Israel is going to bear the brunt of it, and responsibility lies with the empty chair Obama. Plain and simple. trying to divert attention with a column quoting one of Romney’s advisers is just another in the tank for Obama MSM charade. Why not quite Der Spiegal, which today clearly laid the coming ME conflagration on inept Obama policy? Oh, not in the AJC! You are doing your part Bookman, to insure the continuing decline of readership of the AJC.
