Romney claims Obama sympathizes with attack on U.S.
UPDATE 10:20: In a press conference, Romney just claimed that “it is never too early to condemn” attacks on U.S. personnel. Apparently, “never too early” means condemning the attacks before they have even occurred. He also made it pretty clear that no apology for his statements will be forthcoming.
He is simply wrong on this. Wrong factually, wrong politically, wrong as a matter of simple decency. He has bungled this badly, and is doubling down on the bungle.

With four American diplomats dead in Libya, including U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens, the United States has in effect come under attack overseas. The response of the Mitt Romney campaign has been to accuse the Obama administration of sympathizing with the attackers.
That charge is grotesque. It is also factually incorrect. It can be made correct only by going back in time and rearranging events to suit the Romney narrative, and that is not going to happen. Let’s take a look at how the tragic events in question played out:
1.) Alarmed at reports of rising anger in Egypt over an anti-Islamic film made in the United States, the U.S. embassy in Cairo tries to calm things Tuesday morning with a statement in which it “condemns the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims—as we condemn efforts to offend believers of all religions. Respect for religious beliefs is a cornerstone of American democracy. We firmly reject the actions by those who abuse the universal right of free speech to hurt the religious beliefs of others.”
2.) Hours AFTER that statement is released, as the Wall Street Journal reports, protesters in Cairo breach the walls of the embassy and pull down the American flag.
3.) Attacks in Libya — also launched well AFTER the embassy statement — end in the tragic death of four Americans, including the U.S. ambassador. They died in service to our country.
4.) Romney quickly puts out a statement calling it “disgraceful that the Obama Administration’s first response was not to condemn attacks on our diplomatic missions, but to sympathize with those who waged the attacks.”
5.) In the actual first U.S. response to the attacks, released about the same time as the Romney statement, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton condemns the violence in no uncertain terms:
“Some have sought to justify this vicious behavior as a response to inflammatory material posted on the Internet. The United States deplores any intentional effort to denigrate the religious beliefs of others. Our commitment to religious tolerance goes back to the very beginning of our nation. But let me be clear: There is never any justification for violent acts of this kind.”
The charge that an American president sympathizes with those who attacked this country should not be made easily. In fact, under the circumstances it is a charge that should not have been made at all. It would seem to me that an apology is in order from former Gov. Romney, RNC Chairman Reince Preibus, Georgia Attorney General Sam Olens and others who made such an unfounded charge at such a delicate time.

Regarding the gay comment…..homosexuality is condemned in the NT as well. However, the admonition against killing anyone remains.

I truly think the Republican Party is so out of the rhythm of this country, like a movie star who can’t stop staring at themselves in a mirror long enough to realize where they are. Jay’s timeline is flawed. It starts with the “hurt feelings” response from the Obama administration. Prior to that, I believe there were already rioting mobs outside the embassy. Something about tearing down the U.S. flag, etc. The violence had already begun, it just hadn’t peaked.

One can find a few so called “Christians” today who because of either an insane or depraved mind commit a savage crime in the name of Christ. However, I personally know of no incident where they did so while shouting “in the name of Jesus”.

Dear Jay @ 11:15, I am constrained to observe that there was a similar growth/development in the Clinton administration that paralleled that of Reagan, from the poor response to the Mogadishu “Black Hawk Down” to his later more aggressive response to the Balkan genocide.

Yes I would agree that there is a percentage of folks who are of the Muslim faith that are very radical. I would add that there is even a percentage that probably wouldn’t do any harm to the US or US interests but are sympathizers or even apathetic one way or another.
With that said, those folks are nowhere near the majority of the 1.5B Muslims in the world. If they were, we would be in real chaos daily, even in the US.

Since when is it the State Department’s job to “condemn” the continuing efforts of “misguided individuals” to “hurt the religious feelings of Muslims?” Or to “condemn” anyone for their criticism of a religious point of view? If that’s not sympathizing with the Muslim protesters (protests were already occurring BEFORE they arrived at the embassy. I don’t know what is. What is the U.S. government critiquing movies now? Are they going to condemn Trey Parker and Matt Stone next?? Give it a rest.

American embassies are attacked on 9/11 and American citizens are murdered on national tv and all you people are concerned about is how the candidate’s responses will affect the polls? Shame on you. How about a little interest in the families of the victims and the Americans still in harm’s way? How about sending a nuclear aircraft carrier off the coast of Libya to show support? This has been going on since the beginning of the “Arab Spring”.Obama commands little to no respect in the region and his refusal to meet with Israel yesterday emboldened our enemies. Exactly who are our allies in the region now- Syria, Iraq, the Saudis? The next question in Obama’s mind is how many fundraisers he can have in the next two weeks and what color tie he is going to wear on Letterman- not what can be done in the Middle East.
