Obama re-election not likely to ease GOP intransigence

Perhaps out of a forced sense of optimism, President Obama has predicted that if he wins re-election, Republicans in Congress will be more willing to work with him than they proved to be in his first term, when defeating him became their primary goal.

As he told the Associated Press:

“What I’m offering the American people is a balanced approach that the majority agrees with, including a lot of Republicans. And for me to be able to say to the Republicans, the election is over; you no longer need to be focused on trying to beat me; what you need to be focused on and what you should have been focused on from the start is how do we advance the American economy — I’m prepared to make a whole range of compromises, some of which I get criticized from the Democratic Party on, in order to make progress. But we’re going to need compromise on your side as well. And the days of viewing compromise as a dirty word need to be over because the American people are tired of it.

That’s, I think, a message that will resonate not with every Republican, but I think with a lot of fair-minded Republican legislators who probably feel somewhat discouraged about having served in one of the least productive Congresses in American history.”

Congress Energy

Nancy Pelosi, who happens to have a ground-level view of the situation, disagrees, insisting that her Republican colleagues will be just as obstinate as ever.

“I see this president sit for hours being very respectable, but trying to find a path where there could be agreement when there is [none],” Pelosi said. “‘Never. Does never work for you?’ That’s really what they’re saying to the president.”

Conservative pundit Ramesh Ponnuru, writing in Bloomsberg, agrees with Pelosi:

“If the president believes anything like this would happen in his second term, he is kidding himself. If Obama wins re-election, the Republican Party will react by moving right, not left. It will become less likely to compromise with Obama, not more….

Republicans, especially at the grassroots level, would react to Obama’s re-election by assuming that Romney failed because he was too moderate. That’s a very widespread view among Republicans about why Senator John McCain lost in 2008. During the primaries, many of Romney’s opponents argued that he would lose because he would fail to energize conservatives. This interpretation of 2008 is probably wrong, and it will probably be the wrong explanation for a Romney defeat, if it happens. It will nonetheless be an appealing theory for conservatives.”

Pelosi and Ponnuru are probably correct. Absent a major and unexpected swing in voter sentiment, I’m doubtful that most Republicans will be any more willing to compromise and act reasonably than they have been for the past four years. A cult that defines itself by its own intransigence will not surrender that identity easily.

Sure, a few of their more responsible members — perhaps including House Speaker John Boehner and senators such as Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson of Georgia — may be willing to cut a deal with the president on spending and revenue, but the success of the ongoing Great RINO Purge probably ensures that they will be too few in number and influence to make a difference.

In other words, this game of political chicken is likely to continue for as long as a largely apathetic and ill-informed American public is willing to tolerate it. I don’t see that changing soon.

Re: Ponnuru’s statement. I said months ago that I wished a kook like Santorum would get nominated by the GOP because he would get such a beat-down that the far-right wing of the GOP would be put in their place and a true conservative, small government GOP would return. Romney is likely to lose (when you have more Americans on the dole than ever before, they are going to vote for the EBT President) and the right wing whackos will claim it is because Romney was not conservative enough.

All I can say is that next spring is going to be a great time to be a FOM (friend of Michelle’s) because there are going to be some awesome globe-trotting excursions lined up. It might take every plane in the USAF and Delta Airlines to haul the entourage.

Ok Fred, I’ll play. If your income is 3 or 4 times what the average(like mine is), either you were successful in your business or inherited wealth. Perhaps you are college educated and it payed off for you, I am not one bit jealous of your success. good for you. that should be what this country is all about. I appauld your success but just because a person is wealthy does not make him a good person, especially if he has a habit of being crude and attempting to talk down to others!
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

So what has this to do with you spouting the talk radio bumper sticker lies? Or YOU a slackard? Did you sit around and cheat YOUR employer out of money because you were a loser?

Apparently you were because you call OTHER “high achievers.” I mean by saying that you are saying you didn’t work hard. You didn’t achieve. and I’M talking down to YOU? YOU are talking down to yourself. The amount of money you make pal is not a measure of your hard work. Mother Theresa lived a life of poverty, ye tI would call HER a high achiever. Your hero Neal Boortz makes a crap load of money since he sold out to the Republican party, I would merely call him an asshat. A hundred years from now, hell 10, who will be remembered? Neal? Or Mother Theresa.

At 60 years old, one would have thought you would be wiser. I don’t have a boot in your neck, Boortz does. He LOVES you toting the mail for him, keep it up he’s gonna give you……… nothing but disdain. He MAY sya thanks if you park his car but don’t count on it. He’s important and you are a peon. I however see you as a person. A DELUDED person, but a person nonetheless.

Ostrich land.

Yep, if the foo sh*Its, wear it.

The COMPROMISE that President Obama offered last Friday to Catholic leaders regarding the religious exemption for contraception coverage is not only a reasonable solution to the situation, it is also a political win for Obama.

Obama announced last Friday that he would make an “accommodation” to nonprofit religious-affiliated organizations such as hospitals and universities, permitting them to be exempt from the requirement in his health-care law that says contraception must be included in all health-insurance plans. Female employees could obtain it directly from the insurance companies, with no increase in their premium.

These old white men want war. They want to orchestrate chaos, death on a massive scale, endless rivers of blood. Every 30-50 years this social pathology of conquest and destruction erupts in war on a massive scale.
No rational being can stand up against the tide of unreason that is overtaking the U.S. It won’t stop until we wage war against Arab countries and China and reinstate the draft to do so.
Obama’s flaw is that he is a rational being. He tries to reason with men who are beyond reason and possessed by blood lust. They don’t hear him. All they hear is the siren song of war and death.

Nope sorry. I have more faith than that. At SOME point people have to learn to get along. Free your mind bro.

As I said in my post to you, you ARE a high achiever. I can see it in your posts. Why do you let Boortz and the other cons say you aren’t? Why do you put up with that kind of crap? I won’t. Anyway, I bear you no ill will. I don’t hold grudges. Come back more often, not that my permission is needed, hell I may be banned tomorrow, one never knows…….

Both parties only pay lip service to the capital of Israel issue. Actually move our embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and then I’ll really believe you’re sincere.

“Charlotte, N.C. — The chief meteorologist at a Charlotte television station is questioning the decision by Democrats to move President Obama’s acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention to a smaller venue because of the weather. “Thursday night will likely be the best weather of the entire week,” Brad Panovich of WCNC-NBC TV wrote…”

I’m guessing the DNC ran out of cigarette packs, $20 bills, and pints of vodka.

Or maybe takers.

“Can’t wait for Slick Willie’s sermon tonight.”

Me too F. Sinkwich, Willie is very popular, new Gallup has his favorability rating at 69%, an all time high for Clinton, he will help Obama get a bump in the polls.

George W Bush wasn’t allowed to speak at the Republican convention. Imagine if he did? Romney’s negative Gallup convention bump would’ve been worse. Btw, is it still called a bump when you lose support during a convention? Is the correct term dump?

Romney convention dump, -1%

I’m sure she’s the good wife, with an entirely different Spartacus in mind!

Maybe the great rebel against the Romans, or maybe just a play on words and she means these guys?

LOOKS LIKE YOU GUESSED WRONG.

Where did you get your info? Rush’s blog???

Andre Sayegh, a Paterson councilman, is literally lobbying, sitting in the lobby of a hotel here, making calls, talking to fellow conventioneers, trying to find a way to get to see President Obama on Thursday night. He is one of more than 60,000 who won’t get to see the president because his planned open-air appearance has been moved inside.

“I drove 10 hours to see him,” says Sayegh, whose wife Farhanna is a delegate and will get to see Obama’s acceptance speech. It was moved inside the Time Warner Cable Arena because of forecasts of severe thunderstorms.

Jamvet@6:22 – I am not a registered Republican, I am an Independent. Open to best choices from either party. I like Bill Clinton and John Kennedy and Reagan and Bush. I started liking Bush when he stood up at the site of 9-11 and stated we will get those responsible for that. I think his approval rating was about 95% that day. I was proud for him to be the POTUS that day. I almost re-enlisted but quicky came to my senses understanding my age.

12, I don’t write of it very often (for obvious reasons) but when I got to boot camp in San Antonio in October of 1972, I was the only guy picked out of my flight of 55 men to go to Colorado Springs. (I watched a movie (LOL!) about the USAFA and had to make a decision on the spot.) I was only 17 and I declined, and have agonized over that decision for forty years. But overall, I still think that it was the right choice for me.

Sure, I could have retired long ago, probably as a full bird colonel or higher, but I could also be dead in the sands of Iran. Who the hell knows, how things are gonna turn out?!

Ironically, that class of 1972 was the very first to have female cadets…

__________

Not even those in the same party agree. Just ask the Speaker of the House about the tea party that came to the house in 2010. The right wing has kept him awake at night, and forced him to recant of some of the agreements he had made with the President.
And then there are, or were, the Blue Dog Dems.

Please provide a link citing any such a thing from any nationally elected republican.
