Michelle Obama and modern American identity

Last night, Michelle Obama delivered what by many accounts was the best speech not just of the opening night of the Democratic Convention but of either convention to date. As David Gergen put it on CNN, “If they have two more nights like this, they can probably break this race open.”

(Text available here.)

Gergen’s enthusiasm aside, statements by spouses do not swing elections. (The exception may have been Hillary Clinton’s 1992 rescue operation on “60 Minutes,” in which she stalwartly defended her husband against philandering charges.) But in her well-written, well-delivered speech, the current First Lady nonetheless accomplished something important, reminding a rapt audience in Charlotte and tens of millions watching at home that she and her husband are very much in the modern American mainstream, drawing upon this nation’s traditional values to guide both their private lives as well as their political sentiments.

Even those who disagree strongly with those political sentiments should be able to acknowledge that Obama and his wife are quintessentially, honestly American, and that Obama’s story reflects much of what is best about this nation. Whatever their final verdict of his presidency, for example, historians will marvel that the first black person elected to the White House was elected just seven years after the attacks of 2001, and that he was named Barack Hussein Obama. They will attribute that success, quite accurately, to an American generosity of spirit, a true example of American exceptionalism, even as they are also forced to note the sour paranoia that it inspired in some quarters.

As Obama himself put it in a 2004 speech to the Democratic National Convention, “I stand here knowing that my story is part of the larger American story, that I owe a debt to all of those who came before me, and that in no other country on earth is my story even possible.”

That’s the part that some conservatives cannot accept. To acknowledge that Barack Obama is just as American as they are is to acknowledge the ways in which their America has changed, and they cannot bring themselves to embrace those changes. In their minds, to do so would be to lose an America that has already gone, transformed into something still true to its roots but recognizably different, as it has always been different.

Instead, they flock in large numbers to the demogogic “2016: Obama’s America,” seeking reassurance — no matter how absurd — that this Obama is indeed something different, something unAmerican and even anti-American, and that their own deep-set suspicions are valid.

That is not the Obama that most of their fellow citizens see. It was certainly not the person whom his wife described to them last night. And it’s sad. Those who instinctively reject not just Obama’s policies — which are of course subject to fierce and honest debate — but Obama as an American are in fact alienating themselves from their own country. They are defining themselves out of its mainstream, and by doing so they lose what they are trying so passionately to retain.

Billybob — “mick, classic that a dem like you now blames the republicans for obamacare….very enligtening”

Dude, you haven’t been paying attention. The public mandate was originally Newt’s/Heritage Foundation’s idea. Romneycare is simply Obamacare on a state basis. Other than that, there’s no substantive difference.

Even further, cap-and-trade was a Republican idea, but now that the Democrats have warmed to it, the GOP can’t run away from it fast enough.

You really need to do some reading and thinking of your own, IMO — instead of just buying into what you’re told. Some of the Democratic programs you’re raging about were *Republican* ideas *first.*

And y’all said you wanted us to listen to and adopt some of your ideas. But see what y’all do when that happens?

The point is…Elvis has left the building. The dew is off the rose. Ratings for your convention is rock bottom. America has had enough of your elected failure. As of yesterday, Obama was to give his acceptance speech in Bank of America Stadium , which holds 70,000 seats, Rain or Shine. As of today, that speech will now be moved into an auditorium of 20,000 seats. No, it’s not because of weather. It’s because of not being able to fill the stadium with enough Democrats who want to hear an empty suit.

Hey, I can’t make this stuff up. Read the writing on the wall. You guys are the only ones with blinders on and the diminishing ones who are in denial. Just like the Braves chances of winning the WS, it’s time for you all to join them in singing, Turn Out the Lights, the Party’s Over.

[CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- In a politically savvy move, Democrats on Tuesday used clips from Mitt Rommey's losing 1994 campaign for Senate against the late Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.) in a moving video tribute to Kennedy, who served nearly five decades in the Senate.

Clips shown during the first night of the Democratic National Convention included Romney's now infamous reiteration of his pro-choice position, in which he assured voters, "You will not see me wavering on that." ]

When you fight as hard for children that are *actually* drawing breath, then I’ll care what you have to say about feti. And not before then.

“and by telling women to step up to the plate and take responsibility for their ‘mistakes’(obama’s words)…”

Who the hell are *you* to ‘tell women’ ANYTHING? Who do you think you are?

“that leads your thinking to compare me to the taliban…….that is awesome…..you may want to rethink that thought…”

I’ve rethought it. You and the Taliban share some similar views on women. And I imagine that you’d treat women the same way if you thought you could get away with it.

“either way you’ve got nothing except blindly following the killing of unborn babies in the name of ‘not taking responsibility for your actions’…”

What a pathetically foolish statement.

What I’ve *got* is greater freedom — the freedom for women to make their own medical decisions. We already know that the GOP’s against that, since they banded together to use state power to FORCE one man — a Mr. Schiavo, of whom you may have heard — to not act in his wife’s best interest.

but did your hand cramp when it came time to hold last nights speakers for accountable for the multiple exaggerations and mischaracterizations? Or are those not lies?

Of the so called “fact checking” lists, I found only ONE fact check to have any real merit: the 4.5 million jobs claim.

It is actually TRUE that women make 77% of what men do. The fact checkers would have us believe that this FACT isn’t real because not everyone who pays women less INTENDS to pay women less. That’s absurd.

It is TRUE that during Romney’s tenure as governor MA was 47th in job creation, but a focus on wordsmithing and semantics makes it somehow not true and intentionally makes Romney look better as a governor than he actually was (in his last year MA was 28th, let’s forget where he was before that).

FURTHER:

-Democrats say Romney will increase taxes on middle class families, based on a Tax Policy Center report that said it is one of his possible choices if he is to keep his impossible promise, but since Romney PROMISED that he wouldn’t do that, we take him at his word and Democrats are lying.
-”Gutting” Pell Grants, mentioned only once, we take Ryan at his word that he wouldn’t reduce the max amount even though he has also said he would leave it up to Congress to work out the details and THEN CBO could score it, but not before. We are also to believe that the word “gutting” when used by Democrats is different than the word “gutting” when used by Republicans to describe Medicare cuts and defense sequestering. What I’m trying to say is that the media fact checking on this particular thing seems like a reach based on their handling of similar statements from the Republican side, in which they basically agree that “gutting” is accurate for them, but not for Democrats.
-Romney’s government bailout – not speaking to it. Requires more research. But probably not worth much as a talking point and unlikely to remain as a major force anyway.
-$6,400, an accurate “up to” amount based on Ryan’s 2011 plan, which he and Romney SAY they have redone and have made “more generous.” No evidence exists to support their counter to this, and playing word semantics on whether or not we mean the current plan or Ryan’s last plan which is also basically the same as his 2010 plan seems like a deliberate “benefit of the doubt” argument again, leading us to believe that somehow, after two solid plans that show this exact figure, Ryan changed his mind and Romney/Ryan are totally with you all now.
-Democrats vs Republicans in historical references to racism and social issues – more semantics. Attempting to pick this one apart is an attempt to make it seem as though the Democratic Party of now is the KKK embracing party of old, while simultaneously giving the Republican party of now credit for ending slavery and a few votes on the Voting Rights Act. It blurs the line between conservative and liberal ideals. Liberals intend to include more people in voting and citizenry and conservatives, historically and some today, seek to exclude or diminish voting rights and citizenry.

We just have different outlooks on life. I don’t think you’re very well versed past what you read on this blog or what Obama tells you. But that’s ok.

Huh?

Nah I’m good

But apparently you don’t like me telling you the truth about yourself.
As evident by you once again projecting what you think about others as fact.

Still not ready to hold your party accountable?
Or are you just a self appointed republican police?

Do you have a job? Do you work? By the way, I do not belong to the Republican part.

huh,

You deflect blame to our President and never hold the gop accountable.

You are part of the problem and your party has no solutions.

Do you have a job? Do you work?

Let’s cut to the chase. What are you getting at by asking these questions? Is the implication that somehow one who does not currently have a job has no right to an opinion?

getalife,

I do know some things. I know you come across as one angry individual. Not everyone is going to agree with you in this life….no need to get all out of sorts.

It is not about me, it is about a better future for your children.

It will never happen until you cons hold your failed party accountable.

Got it?

I wouldn’t exactly call them my party but I do think they have a better grasp of the economic fundamentals

Two laughs for the price of one!

Spendaholic Republicans pretending to be non-spendaholic non-Republicans!

Deval Patrick at the Dem convention:

“Mitt Romney talks a lot about all the things he’s fixed. I can tell you that Massachusetts wasn’t one of them. He’s a fine fellow and a great salesman, but as governor he was more interested in having the job than doing it.”
and
“This is the president who delivered the security of affordable health care to every single American after 90 years of trying. This is the president who brought Osama bin Laden to justice, who ended the war in Iraq and is ending the war in Afghanistan. This is the president who ended “don’t ask, don’t tell” so that love of country, not love of another, determines fitness for military service. Who made equal pay for equal work the law of the land. This is the president who saved the American auto industry from extinction, the American financial industry from self-destruction, and the American economy from depression. Who added over 4.5 million private sector jobs in the last two-plus years, more jobs than George W. Bush added in eight.”

Woo-hoo — We Won’t Go Back! :)

getalife,

Have you researched the bills drafted by Republican members of the house and senate regarding job creation? Those are solutions that were offered.

Adam-It is actually TRUE that women make 77% of what men do.

in blanket terms (money made by women vs money made by men) yes it’s true, but females with the same human capital as a ma gets the same pay….there is nothing lopsided in men vs women pay

Adam,

No, that is not the implication but it does give me some insight on how someone might form an opinion.
