Michelle Obama and modern American identity

Last night, Michelle Obama delivered what by many accounts was the best speech not just of the opening night of the Democratic Convention but of either convention to date. As David Gergen put it on CNN, “If they have two more nights like this, they can probably break this race open.”

(Text available here.)

Gergen’s enthusiasm aside, statements by spouses do not swing elections. (The exception may have been Hillary Clinton’s 1992 rescue operation on “60 Minutes,” in which she stalwartly defended her husband against philandering charges.) But in her well-written, well-delivered speech, the current First Lady nonetheless accomplished something important, reminding a rapt audience in Charlotte and tens of millions watching at home that she and her husband are very much in the modern American mainstream, drawing upon this nation’s traditional values to guide both their private lives as well as their political sentiments.

Even those who disagree strongly with those political sentiments should be able to acknowledge that Obama and his wife are quintessentially, honestly American, and that Obama’s story reflects much of what is best about this nation. Whatever their final verdict of his presidency, for example, historians will marvel that the first black person elected to the White House was elected just seven years after the attacks of 2001, and that he was named Barack Hussein Obama. They will attribute that success, quite accurately, to an American generosity of spirit, a true example of American exceptionalism, even as they are also forced to note the sour paranoia that it inspired in some quarters.

As Obama himself put it in a 2004 speech to the Democratic National Convention, “I stand here knowing that my story is part of the larger American story, that I owe a debt to all of those who came before me, and that in no other country on earth is my story even possible.”

That’s the part that some conservatives cannot accept. To acknowledge that Barack Obama is just as American as they are is to acknowledge the ways in which their America has changed, and they cannot bring themselves to embrace those changes. In their minds, to do so would be to lose an America that has already gone, transformed into something still true to its roots but recognizably different, as it has always been different.

Instead, they flock in large numbers to the demogogic “2016: Obama’s America,” seeking reassurance — no matter how absurd — that this Obama is indeed something different, something unAmerican and even anti-American, and that their own deep-set suspicions are valid.

That is not the Obama that most of their fellow citizens see. It was certainly not the person whom his wife described to them last night. And it’s sad. Those who instinctively reject not just Obama’s policies — which are of course subject to fierce and honest debate — but Obama as an American are in fact alienating themselves from their own country. They are defining themselves out of its mainstream, and by doing so they lose what they are trying so passionately to retain.

maybe, but it has never been so blatantly stated and acted upon before this. The Republican Congress members should be arrested for criminal neglect to the people of the United States. We could have had jobs by now, lowered the deficit, and balanced the budget, if only The GOP had honestly worked for the People instead of passing multiple anti abortion resolutions that aren’t worth the paper they are written on.

But this is why I say there are only two kinds of Republicans, the Rich and the Duped…and the Duped are mostly because of self inflected wounds.

“There’s been a net loss of nearly 1 million public-sector jobs since Obama took office, despite a surge in temporary hiring for the 2010 census.”
=================================

The above statement is taken from the data you gave. Anyone who will look at truth knows that that loss of public sector jobs has been a direct result of Republican ideology. The stimulus money, authorized by Obama, acutally helped to sustain many teachers and other state workers in their jobs, when Republican-dominated state legislatures have been intent on laying off these “government” workers to “starve the beast of government” as part of their ideological agenda. Some analysts have even speculated that – if these state workers had not been laid off by Republican ideologues – that the current unemployment rate for the nation would be close to 7.2% presently. Furthermore, because Obama single-handedly decided to help save GM, those auto workers were able to keep their jobs and GM now turns a profit.

“a bunch of faux outrage”? Tell that to some schmuck who has been out of work for the last year or two. Tell that to some conscientious black male about 28 without a HS education who is trying to find a job. Tell that to all of those who file for unemployment compensation every month which will soon run out for most of them. I am sure that this outrage is very real for them. For all of this concern, those in the WH don’t seem to let that interfere with Hawaii vacations, fancy wardrobes and spending the taxpayer dime on themselves. Tell me how Michelle’s 7500 dollar jacket identifies her with the little guy.

A 28 year old without a HS diploma, regardless of race or gender, would have a difficult time finding a job period seeing as how manufacturing jobs began leaving the US long ago. Not sure why you had to mention race.

New polls show Paul Ryan on the Republican presidential ticket making Wisconsin a major player in November.

CNN has changed Wisconsin on its electoral map from leaning toward President Obama, to a toss up. A new Public Policy Polling survey has Mitt Romney ahead of the president in Wisconsin. And they’re pointing to Paul Ryan as a major reason why.

According to the most recent polls President Obama can use all the help he can get from the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte this week. Three new polls show Obama either tied or behind Republican challenger Mitt Romney in North Carolina. President Obama won the Tar Heel State in 2008 by a slim margin, but he will need to make some gains on Romney in the next two months in order to earn North Carolina’s 15 electoral votes again.

Obama currently trails Romney by two points, 47.3 percent to 45.3 percent, in a Real Clear Politics average of four polls from the last week.

Barack Obama approaches his nomination for a second term with the lowest pre-convention personal popularity of an incumbent president in ABC News/Washington Post polls since the 1980s. He’s also at his lowest of the year among registered voters, with trouble among women.

This is Elliot running away because he has been caught out. I posted the church like he asked and since he cant’ substantiate his lie and lacks the moral character to own up to it, he has to run away. He’ll be back in 45 seconds to post under another name. And alt……. maybe even under the name he usually uses lol.

@USMC…Faktchek: Obama campaign caught spreading lies again!…
Lets do a fact check on Romney and his statement about creating 12 million job..But, I’m sure you believe that, right? Talking about the impossible. That’s 250,000 jobs a month for 4 years..”Mission Impossible”

I love how Libs say the Republican are the reason why the economy is so bad when in fact not asingle Democrat voted for Obama’s latest budget….FAIL
+++++++++++++++++++++++

Not meant to be factual, but not a lie since he posts out of ignorance not malice.

Obama’s “latest” budget never made it to the floor to be voted on. The Republicans pulled out of talks. But in fact his FIRST budget was rejected unanimously. There ya go Mark, you are now no longer ignorant of the truth. You have been properly informed.

Step away from the talk radio and mass email lies Mark T. We’ll help educate you.

I think Republicans can sense what is happening. Last night was the turning point in the election.

After the very weak Republican convention that didn’t even produce a Romney bump, the Democrats came out swinging and produced a first inning home run. Tonight it is Bill Clinton’s turn. After Clinton’s speech we could be looking at a run rule. As I remember Clinton has been known to give to a good speech. Thursday when President Obama speaks the fat lady will have already sung, (and no Jm I don’t mean Michelle.) As in turn out the lights, the Republican Party is over.
