The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Monday shows Mitt Romney attracting support from 48% of voters nationwide, while President Obama earns 44% of the vote. Two percent (2%) prefer some other candidate, and five percent (5%) are undecided.

Rasmussen only polls people who will vote. Obama has a lock on the people who will not vote. LOL.

Do I vote? LOL I not only vote but I’m the poll manager for my precinct. As an independent, I usually watch or scan, but there is no need to do so this year. The Republicans are running on an “Obama sucks” plank with everything else the same (or worse) ideas that put us in this mess to begin with. Why do I need to watch to know that? I can hear it every day all day on talk radio or FOX if I wanted to. I can read it from the braindead hard line righties here.

As far as the Democratic convention? What’s to watch? Obama is going to spout the same stuff he did (and has been since) 4 years ago. While the ideas aren’t “fresh” they have never been tried because the block party of no, the Fright wing, has blocked everything he’s tried. Yet in SPITE of their crappy Country damaging posturing, the Economy is slowly coming back. Even so, there is nothing new to be seen at the Democratic convention…….. unless there is a revolt and by a miracle Hitlery gets the nod. Now THAT would be exciting . But still not enough to watch, I’d vote for her over him anyway given a choice.

Romney got a small bounce; Obama will get a small bounce. The conventions are later in the year, shorter, and fewer are watching them. As well, Romney announced his VP a couple of weeks back rather than wait for the convention — and Romney got a small bounce from that, so there wasn’t much room for any additional bounce. Traditionally, one of the things that drives a convention bounce is the announcement of the VP candidate. In a week, the race will be back where it was. But where was it? Obama seems to have a ceiling in the mid – high 40s that is exceedingly difficult for him to get above. What that actually means is that for all intents and purposes, Romney is really ahead, regardless of what anyone in the msm tells you. Remember, back in 2008, Obama only got 52.8% of the popular vote. Obviously his ceiling this time around is below that, and possibly substantially below. This time around, Romney will not be at a massive unprecedented (in recent decades) financial disadvantage the way McCain was in 2008. If anything, Romney will have the financial advantage going forward.

It does not concern me in the least if Barack Obama is reelected. I manage my money, know my expenses and know my income. The only issue that I am in complete agreement with the incumbent, is the need of green energy.
Where I live has developed a tropical climate and I am 30 miles from Canada
. Greenland has lost its glaciers for the first time since the last ice age.
It is really quite pleasant, where there was a lot of rain, is nearly arid, the days which now would be 70 have been in the 80s. Making out a lot better than the southern states and Florida will be seeing a lot fewer snobirds.
I would like Mitt as the next Prez, however, with global warming, time is limited. I hope I am not sounding pessimistic. Adios

Well, here I am, out making my rounds instead of looking for free hot dogs and burgers at the VFW or American Legion. And all because the boss didn’t want to make a big deal about Labor Day and the unions and such. I kinda see his point but it would be real nice to have the day off.

Anyhow, me and the missus watched the Clint Eastwood speech and we kinda agreed he’d been sampling the stuff I haul pretty heavy. I mean, when you’re talking to a empty chair you know you’re in the bag. It’s sorta like Elliott Boggess when he got a snootful and tried to get into a fight with a totem pole that was out in front of McClung’s store.

So it’s no wonder to me that Romney never got much of a bump out of the convention. I mean, with all those TV watchers saying, “Look, it’s bunch of drunks,” nobody’s going to pay much attention to the Truth that was coming out of Romney’s mouth.

Anyhow, it’s back to hauling and lugging for me. I’ll try and not get wet when the rain comes, but I sure wish I was home.

True and very insightful. Now if we just knew what Obama’s plans are. So far, nothing. But then, he has been so busy telling lies about Romney he hasn’t had time to formulate anything but the same failed policies of tax increases, deficit increases, forced energy shortages, higher food prices, lower wages, weaker military, and more wasted tax payer money given to his friends. Good morning everybody and happy Labor day! The polls I am looking at were at the GOP convention. When cameras showed the people who attended and it was all middle aged and older white people. What I did not see was groups of young voters, black, Asian or Hispanic voters. If this reflects the general voting public and I think it does then Romney will lose. As one of you wrote earlier I was not interested in the fact the candidates are nice guys, loved their mama and children. I want to know what they are going to do to better our country.

Think about it. The Romney/Ryan ticket represents a party that has shown itself to be so criminally incompetent that its previous president, occupant of the executive branch for 8 of the last 11 years, cannot even be mentioned by name. That’s what you call discredited. Meanwhile, it’s current congressional representatives have approval ratings at all-time historical lows.

And YET, this party’s ticket is still in a dead heat for the presidency and could with just a little help from say a Euro zone meltdown, still entirely possible at this point, have things tip its way and win.

All of which tells us what?

That the two-party system works like a charm to churn public outrage and disaffection, shifting it back and forth between parties, while inoculating the GOP, the truly radical party, from ever becoming entirely discredited as a result of its radical policies. In other words the ruling class consensus is able to pursue its radical policies of wealth redistribution while operating under cover of an ostensibly two-party system.

Pre convention polls show a very tight race. Despite this, I’m cautiously optimistic. First I don’t want overlook the dark cloud behind my silver lining. The Romney Ryan boys have very deep pockets. Obama has proven to be an all time great at fund raising, but he’s no match for the GOP money machine. Is our little experiment in democratic government about to go to the highest bidder? I guess we’ll find out won’t we.

Now for the silver lining. There’s the little matter of the two and half hour Marathon Ryan claimed to have run. A little lie. Not much more than fib really. Just one of many, but at some point you reach the lie that broke the camels back. A campaign that stated it wouldn’t be dictated to by fact checkers still has to retain the faith of the voters. If they’re not to be held accountable by facts, then who are they to be accountable to? Only the voters really. At the end of the day we get the government we deserve. Some of us enjoy being lied to, and some of us don’t.

Clinton wants Hillary to run in 016 and therefore is allowing Obama to attempt campaigning on his record which Obama cannot do on his own. Given the fact that Democrats have a pretty slim depth chart in comparison to Republicans, Hillary is probably a shoo in for the nomination in 016. Clinton needs to appear as though he’s doing his best to support Obama to gain as much reciprocating support for Hillary in 016. Clinton’s mission at the convention will be to swing the undecided vote about 5% over to Obama with his keynote address. If Obama comes away with a 5 point plus bump it may signal that Clinton succeeded. It’s really a must do for the Obama campaign to get the majority of undecided voters as typically at this stage of a race the undecided’s break for an incumbents opponent.

College football opening weekend is like Christmas to me. I was spending Sat. afternoon drinking beer and watching football. I let my 10 month old puppy out back for about 2 minutes and took my eyes off of him. I guess he saw a bird or squirrel or something in the front and took off running. He got out in the road and the rest is history. It all happened about 2 hours before Bama was about to play UM which was to be the highlight of my year. Instead this is the saddest I’ve ever been in my life. My only consolation is that he died instantly. Its been personally devastating to me and I couldn’t eat for a day and woke up at 3:38 this morning and couldn’t sleep since then. He always slept in bed with me and that little 8 lb tyke was the world to me. He was a shizu and his name was Marley.

I thought about it all weekend and tried to make sense of it. I figured the good Lord is trying to tell me something and everything happens for a reason. While I was thinking about it I thought about keep up the good fight and doggone and some of the other dog lovers on here. I thought about keep because I remember the man was working with abused dogs and one of em chewed his hand up and had to be put down. And keep was kinda down over the fact that the dog had to be put down. There’s a lot of good in the man. Anybody that loves dogs there has to be good in them. Same with doggone and a lot of other liberals on here that I give a hard time to and generally just engage in jackassery.

So I’m going to make a pledge in honor Marley and call it the Marley pledge. I’m going to do my best to more civil to people like keep, kam, adam, etc. the whole lot of you durn libruls. I’m just sorry for all the times I’ve been a jackass to you guys. And I’m going to try my best to be civil and stay true to making something good come out of Marley’s passing and recognize the good in not only dog lovers like keep and doggone but everyone else on here. Hopefully I’ll keep that pledge. But ya’ll know my jackassery so you know it won’t be easy. I hope you guys call me out and hold me to it when I slip.

Rasmussen is a Republican stooge poll–everybody knows that. That was the worst convention I’ve ever witnessed. Of course they couldn’t help the hurricane problem (unless you believe the Pat Robertson schtick and God was punishing Republicans.) But, the decision to put the doddering, foolish Clint Eastwood on stage to humiliate an empty chair where he imagines our president sits–that is classic comedy gold. I guess I was wrong about Republicans not having a sense of humor. They are really funny–they just don’t intend it. Doom, sorry to hear about your puppy. It’s tough to lose them. Look up the Rainbow Bridge. It’s corny but it sometimes help to think about them still being the puppies they always will be in our mind.

As for the rescued dog who attacked me while having a flashback, fortunately he still lives on a farm with lots of fence area to run and I see him sometimes. But I still have multiple scars. And I still work with service dogs every day to help train them for those who need them. It’s one of the great joys in life.

TD: Sorry for your loss. It is hard regardless of whether they are a puppy or full grown and old. They always are glad to see you, regardless of how long you’ve been gone. We had a pup get loose; thankfully she went to another neighbors fenced yard to play with her neighbor dog. The wait and search was pure hell, until the neighbor called.

Once you have dealt with your loss, please consider adopting one from a pet rescue. My wife donates her time to Small Dog Rescue, which merged with Furkids. They usually have adoption sessions each Saturday at the Petco in Sandy Springs. They have too many abandoned dogs, in my opinion. God bless. It is obvious the joy your dog brought to you. God’s creatures. As they say dog is god spelled backwards.

Common: They’ve really backed away from the salt thing causing high BP so I never much look at it. I’m worried about fat and calories. I’ll start paying more attention to the salt though. I was telling my wife the other day thta I need to cut back on the amount I use in cooking as well.

I might be alone, but this 69 year old white veteran was highly offended by an old man addressing an empty chair as if he was speaking to the Commander in Chief of US armed forces. They are free to disagree with Obama, but they are not free to disrespect the office he holds. Given our success against Al Qaeda, the intelligent use of force in Libya, and the work his wife does for veterans, his term has been good for the armed services.
If Ryan is permitted to introduce veterans to vouchers as a substitute for the full faith and credit of the United States, we will understand very clearly the difference between these two parties.
Regarding dogs I recommend a shelter dog that is a combination of a Shihtzu and poodle. He’s a lot of fun, and the combined name is a triumph the Sh*tpoo.

The Clinton administration is just a complicit in the financial melt-down as Reagan, Bush I and Bush II. He signed the legislation which dissolved the barriers between institutions put in place after the Great Depression; his economic team ignored Brooksley Born’s warning about the unregulated derivatives market; his term as president did nothing to prevent the continued decline of the middle class.

So if by “embrace” you mean “hold in disdain”, then yeah, I totally embrace Clinton.

“1. GDP growth turns negative. The gross domestic product declined at an annual rate of 0.5 percent in the third quarter of 2008—the largest decline since the third quarter of 2001. The drop in growth followed a 3.8% decline in consumer spending—the largest decrease since the second quarter of 1980. Spending on homes also declined by 16.0% in the third quarter of 2008, marking the 11th quarterly decline in a row and the longest continuous decline in residential real estate spending since the 11th quarter period that ended in March 1958.

2. Job losses accelerate. The U.S. economy lost 2.6 million jobs in 2008, including 524,000 jobs in December. Fifty-nine percent of job losses came during the last quarter.

3. Unemployment rates reflect broad labor market recession. The unemployment rate was 7.2% in December 2008—the highest level since January 1993. The African-American unemployment rate stood at 11.9%, the Hispanic unemployment rate at 9.2%, and the unemployment rate for whites at 6.6% in December 2008.

4. The job market recession is the most severe in decades. The labor market shrunk by 1.9% over the course of 2008—the fastest decline during the 12 months after a recession started since the recession that started in May 1960. The unemployment rate rose 2.3% during the first 12 months of the recession—the fastest such increase since the recession that started in January 1970.

5. Wages have temporarily outgrown inflation. Factoring in inflation, hourly wages were 2.3% and weekly wages were 3.3% higher in November 2008 than in December 2007. These increases followed lower prices in November 2008 and are unlikely to continue.

6. Benefits decreased before the crisis. The share of private sector workers with a pension dropped from 50.3% in 2000 to 45.1% in 2007, and the share of people with employer-provided health insurance dropped from 64.2% in 2000 to 59.3% in 2007.

7. Families are still burdened by high levels of debt. Household debt averaged 130.3% of disposable income in the third quarter of 2008, down from a record high of 133.5% at the end of 2007, but higher than any level recorded before September 2006.

8. The housing crisis deepens. New home sales in November 2008 were 35.3% lower and existing home sales were 10.6% lower than a year earlier. Median sale prices for new homes dropped by 11.5% and those for existing homes by 13.2% during the same time. It would take more than 11 months to sell all houses on the market at the current rate of new home sales. This has been true for four months in a row now, making this the worst new home sales market since the Census Bureau collected these data in 1963.

9. Homeowners lose wealth. The values of all homes fell by $656 billion in the third quarter of 2008 after accounting for inflation, and they were 13.6% or $2.4 trillion lower than a year earlier, making it the largest such drop since the Federal Reserve collected these data in 1952. Home equity as a share of home values also fell to a record low of 44.7% in the third quarter of 2008.

10. Mortgage troubles mount. One in 10 mortgages is delinquent or in foreclosure. The share of mortgages that were delinquent during the third quarter of 2008 was 7.0%, and the share of mortgages that were in foreclosure was 3.0%. The share of new mortgages going into foreclosure stayed at its record high of 1.1% in the third quarter.

11. Families feel the pressure. Credit card defaults rose to 5.6% of all credit card debt by the third quarter of 2008—an increase of 35.4% from the fourth quarter of 2007.

12. Business investment declines. Business investment declined by 1.7% in the third quarter of 2008—the largest decline since the first quarter of 2004. Business spending on equipment and software also dropped for the third quarter in a row, the longest such decline since the first quarter of 2002.

13. The trade deficit remains high. The trade deficit stood at 4.9% of GDP in the third quarter of 2008. Despite declining slightly, the trade deficit remains at a historically high and ultimately unsustainable level.

14. Large deficits are looming. Following years of fiscal and economic mismanagement, the federal government’s deficit is expected to reach $1.2 trillion in 2009, even before a necessary economic stimulus has been enacted.”

Good grief! If reimbursement rates are greatly cut, then that means fewer doctors will accept Medicare patients. Certainly, fewer good doctors will do so. That means that wait times will increase and quality will be less. That’s Economics 101. To say that doing this means no cuts to Medicare benefits is economic illiteracy. That being said, I support such cuts being made as I think entitlement spending needs to be kept from exploding in the future, even if it means lower quality and lower individual benefit level. What I don’t support is using these cuts to mask just how expensive ObamaCare really is. That’s dishonesty.

Lets refresh our memories on the w disaster:

“1. Lies about an optional war. Some may argue that Bush wasn’t lying about the weapons of mass destruction — that he, and many others, believed they were there. The problem is, he, and most everyone in his administration, misrepresented (lied) about the nature of the intelligence that (they claimed) led us into war. Within the intelligence community — yes, Bush’s own intelligence community — there was much, much more disagreement about the nature and threat of these weapons (and even whether they existed) than what Bush-Cheney-Rice-Rumsfeld claimed. Also in the category of outrageous lies, it is now clear that Bush, during the run-up to the war, was routinely lying when he said he had made no decision about going to war, that he was trying to exhaust all diplomatic options. Memos and staffers have since made it clear that Iraq was a target for war even before 9/11.

2. The optional war itself. It was clear that an invasion of Iraq was not tied to 9/11 and that it would not do anything to deter terrorism and that, in fact, it would make terrorism worse. Bush and his followers might believe otherwise, but I would argue that this is empirically true. The vote for the war authorization was pushed right before a midterm election, and Bush was demanding its passage, clearly making war a political issues. That alone is outrageous conduct for a president. But I would be happy to eliminate this one from the list, if enough readers think I should.

3. The fiasco in handling the optional war that was started from lies. Even John McCain, military strategists and such right-wingers as Pat Buchanan acknowledge this one. Because of arrogance, ignorance and just plain stupidity, the war was mismanaged from the start. It led to countless unnecessary deaths, a disastrous loss of prestige and diplomatic clout for America, and, predictably, it became an al-Qaeda training and recruitment tool.

4. Tax cuts that overwhelmingly favor the rich in a time of war. It is possible, as far as policy goes, to argue for tax cuts, even in the face of crushing deficits. It may be possible to argue, in a supply-sider’s dream, that it is appropriate for the rich to garner most of the benefits for the tax cuts. But it is nearly impossible, unless one lacks sufficient powers of reasoning, to argue that we should enact tax cuts that disproportionately favor the wealthy, when war demands sacrifices and sufficient revenue to be waged successfully.

5. Trillions in new debt, and annual deficits in the half-trillion-dollar range. This may be paired with the item above. Bush and the Republicans have not only failed to pay for the tax cuts they so eagerly handed out to rich supporters who then gave them campaign contributions, they also put forth billions in new spending, making Democrats look like chumps when it comes to pork-barreling. Oh, and by the way, they also enacted the biggest entitlement program in history since Social Security, the pharmaceutical drug bill, that provided billions to drug companies while restricting drug price competition. Also, the Bush administration lied to members of his own party about the cost of the 2003 Medicare bill, just so they could be tricked into voting for it.

6. The weakening of the dollar. Again, this may be paired with the items above. Many experts have speculated that the dollar’s reign as the world currency may end fairly soon, and its displacement can be directly tied to Reagan-Bush-Bush policies favoring vast debt, massive gaps in wealth between the rich and middle class, a weakening of the manufacturing economy, and changing the U.S. from the largest creditor nation in history to the largest debtor nation in history. I won’t give Bill Clinton a pass on this one, since the manufacturing sector decline continued under his watch and, some might argue, accelerated as a result of NAFTA. But it is clear that idea that taxes are heresy under Republicans — even at the expense of the nation and at the collapse of the dollar — has taken on its Biblical status under George W. Bush.

7. The aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Here was a president so disengaged that American citizens were left stranded, and people died, during his inaction. Yet, in his words, “Brownie, you’re doing a heckuva job.”

8. The suspension of habeas corpus. This has taken several forms under George Bush — by executive decision, through legal opinion by the likes of hack John Yoo and by the establishment of prisons to hold prisoners without charge or trial. But one moment Americans should never forget is the passage of the Military Commissions Act of 2006. Congress must share the blame on this, but without Bush’s “leadership,” it never would have passed. The law cast aside the Constitution and the principle of habeas corpus, which protects against unlawful and indefinite imprisonment. The Congress also gave the president absolute power to designate enemy combatants, and to set his own definitions for torture.

9. “Enhanced interrogation”/torture/extraordinary rendition. Bush said he knew and approved of the harsh tactics that led to such outrages as Abu Ghraib. Bush says the U.S. doesn’t torture because it doesn’t torture. Whatever you call it, it amounts to an illegal usurping of executive authority. John McCain was against it before he was for it. Some Americans may believe terrorists deserve torture in some cases, and I won’t disagree; however, it is clear that, under George W. Bush, America tortured some innocent people, and in some cases it transported prisoners to other countries so they could be tortured there.

10. Halliburton/Blackwater. These companies are by symbols for the privatization of war. Military contractors, often having no accountability to anyone, have stolen billions, wasted more billions, and kidnapped, raped and murdered in the name of the United States.

11. Guantanamo. While military prisons are routine in wartime, the problem with Gitmo is that it has been set up to hold terrorists as well as the innocent. And because of the end of habeas corpus, there is no way for the innocent to be set loose. In addition, it has undoubtedly created terrorists out of innocent people; even setting loose the innocent has become a grave risk, thanks to George W. Bush. But Guantanamo is not the only place where the innocent are held. Just last month, the U.S. released AP photographer Bilal Hussein after holding him in Iraq for two years without trial.

12. Presidential signing statements. Bush has made unprecedented use of these extra-legal statements in which he declares all or part of a law unconstitutional because (he says) it encroaches on executive authority. Therefore, he’ll sign the bill but ignore the parts he disagrees with. These statements have been used on a limited basis by other presidents in particular situations. But George Bush has claimed the authority to disobey more than 750 laws. Among them, reported the Boston Globe, are “military rules and regulations, affirmative-action provisions, requirements that Congress be told about immigration services problems, ‘whistle-blower’ protections for nuclear regulatory officials, and safeguards against political interference in federally funded research. Legal scholars say the scope and aggression of Bush’s assertions that he can bypass laws represent a concerted effort to expand his power at the expense of Congress, upsetting the balance between the branches of government.”

13. The Healthy Forests Initiative — would allow more logging and development in our national parks.

14. The Clear Skies Initiative — would weaken many parts of the Clean Air Act to allow more pollutants in many areas. Aside from what these laws do is the Orwellian Newspeak — giving names to policies or laws that are, at best, misleading. (Read: Patriot Act.)

15. Mining safety. Bush cut funding for mining safety and stacked the Mine Safety and Health Administration with industry executives, who fought against better regulations to protect lives and limbs. In 2006, forty-seven coal miners died on the job, the most in any full year since 1995, when forty-seven also were killed. Thirty-three were killed last year. Not all the deaths can be blamed on Bush and his industry-friendly appointees, but most assuredly, some can.

16. The U.S. attorney scandals. In this case, seven U.S. attorneys — Republicans — were fired in 2006. The reasons for the dismissals remain unclear, but allegations were that they were made for partisan political purposes. Anyone who doubts that partisanship (see Monica Goodling) was a factor — which, by the way, undermines the justice system of the United States — has not been paying attention to the way George Bush operates. Investigations into the matter have been impeded, but it is without question that the scandal has eroded morale in the Justice Department.

17. Stop loss. This U.S. military policy amounts to a back-door draft. While legal, it erodes morale, weakens the military and subjects soldiers to repeated danger and the possibility of physical and mental problems. Apparently, a weaker military is a policy of this administration, since it has overextended personnel and refused to provide adequate body armor to troops. In addition, Bush favored cutting funding for Veterans’ Administration, denying crucial medical care to the troops that he sent to war.

18. Alienation of U.S. allies.

19. Cutting of food stamps. This could be an ideological difference, so many might argue it’s not fair game in a list of Bush disasters. However, one aspect of the Bush prescription drug plan related to this issue can’t be viewed as ideological: as reported by Salon, “More bad news about that prescription drug plan: Seniors who use it may lose their food stamps.”

20. “So?” Dick Cheneys’ response to a question noting that the vast majority of Americans believe Iraq was a mistake and want the troops to come home.

21. FISA/illegal wiretapping. Bush still claims that violating the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act is okay because he’s fighting the terrorists. But there’s nothing in the law that prevented wiretapping; it allowed temporary wiretapping until warrants could be issued. That didn’t matter to Bush; he’d rather violate the law when possible.

22. 9/11. Bush and his administration ignored repeated warnings that a major terrorist act was pending on U.S. soil. Richard Clarke said he tried for months to have Bush and Condaleeza Rice make terrorism a priority, but they ignored him. Whether you believe Clarke or not, the fact is that there was a memo about bin Laden being determined to strike in the U.S., and Bush went on vacation to Crawford, Texas, shortly before the Twin Towers fell.

23. Global warming. Bush now admits it’s a problem, although Bush officials trashed science by redacting independent governmentally commissioned studies on the issue. But even though he says it’s a problem he has no proposals to do anything about it in the near term.

24. Health care. More children (9 million) are without health insurance today than when Bush took office. The nation is facing catastrophic health care costs for the next century; Bush has ignored the problem.

25. Energy policy. The records of Dick Cheney’s task force on energy are secret, so we don’t know how much of the nation’s energy policy was dictated by energy companies. But it is certain that it was a great deal; Bush’s pattern in this area is the same as in others; i.e., put oil and gas officials in charge of energy policy; put pharmaceutical companies in charge of drug policy; let health industry lobbyists write health policy legislation. Gas prices have soared and record profits are now routine business for the oil companies; people think their taxes are lower under Bush, but they are paying more for gas, food and other basic necessities – and they are also paying more state and local taxes because of federal budget cuts.

26. Immigration. For Bush or against him on this issue, it can hardly be argued that he has put forth a successful policy.

27. The Pentagon information apparatus designed to praise George Bush’s war by touting military officers — paid by private contractors — as objective observers. This was a deliberate attempt to lie to the American people through a compliant and incompetent mass media.

28. Plants in press conferences. Jeff Gannon, a right-wing gay escort, was given press credentials and allowed to lob softball questions at Bush during White House news conferences.

29. A weaker America — we are weaker militarily, economically and on the world stage than the day George Bush took office. Some Republicans seem to fear Democrats because they say the Democrats want to destroy America. But it is hard to imagine a series of policies that have done more to hurt America than those forced upon us over the last seven years. Three-fourths of Americans know the country is on the wrong track, yet half of them support “more wrong track,” as Bill Maher put it. This is because the Republicans are very good at distracting large numbers of people from the disasters that this administration has fostered. One method they use is that they claim that criticisms of policy, particularly war policy, amount to criticisms of America. I want to make it clear that this tactic won’t work here. The above criticisms are not criticisms of America; they are criticisms of George W. Bush. It is because I love this country that this list was compiled. It was George Bush, not America, who brought us to this place.

30. A divided America. After 9/11 Bush had that rare opportunity to unite the nation, and the world, to defeat terrorism. Instead of using this goodwill – instead of bringing us all together to fight a common enemy — he squandered it. A generation has been lost to Bush’s petty petulance and his unilateral, misguided use of executive power. One would think that most conservatives, and most Republicans, would worry about expanded executive power. But many of them haven’t. One wonders how they will feel about it when a Democrat takes office.
