Romney did just fine, but a game-changer? No
Meh.
Mitt Romney did a competent job of presenting himself as a competent candidate Thursday night. He humanized himself, presenting a side of himself that most Americans had not seen, and he competently delivered the standard conservative critique of the perceived shortcomings of Barack Obama in largely positive, unthreatening tones.
He also didn’t keep the fact-checkers busy deep into the night, as his running mate Paul Ryan had the evening before, largely because his speech lacked details or specifics. That’s fine; he and his speechwriters had clearly decided to hit on big themes and to stress the candidate’s softer, more humane side, and again, they succeeded in doing so. But I’m doubtful that the American people came away wowed by the performance or by Romney himself.
The talk of the night, instead, focused on Clint Eastwood and his empty chair. They were clearly the weirdest tandem of the evening, which is saying something when Newt and Callista are also on the bill.

I have looked over Romney’s plan. I don’t see how it will address any of the underlying issues that are crippling our country. I’ve seen where Romney endorsed Ryan’s Budget Plan. I have also read that budget plan, and I don’t see how it comes close to doing what it’s professed to do.
In other words, Romney’s talk and his veener looks good to the uninformed or uncaring. I don’t go for words or looks. I look at actions. Any man who has to hide his actions is a man that I don’t trust, and Romney is that man. Had the GOP nominated the person I think would have been much better, then I would have easily voted for that candidate. However, thanks to the choices I have to pick from, I have to do a great deal of soul searching before I hit that booth in November.

Come on everyone… it was a well-delivered speech and I would hope that the RNC coming to an end and the DNC coming up will now redirect our attention to the important issues in this election… not teleprompters, tax returns, “I built this,” “… put y’all back in chains,” or whatever else. The economy is first and foremost in our minds and Obama and Romney simply have competing visions on how best to help all Americans. There is no reason to demonize one side or the other simply because we disagree.

There was one plan that was put forth in January that talked about cuts under the guise of retooling and restyling our military to be better suited for challenges we’re likely to face in the future. If that’s the one you’re talking about, I remember that one. There’s good and bad in that plan in my opinion. If the goal is to reduce duplicity, fraud, and wastes, then that’s ok by me. If it’s simply cutting dollars with no regards of making sure each dollar spent is going to return it’s value in resources, then I can’t go for that type of thing.

The crescendo of the speech was surreal, abrupt and unsatisfying. Traditional nomination speeches end with a memorable optimistic line repeated for effect, consider John McCain’s “Stand Up and Fight” defiance. This speech’s closing call and response was a series of questions that ended with the crowd shouting “No!” It was a metaphor as well as an ill-advised rhetorical device.

Clint Eastwood earned plenty of bad reviews for his latest performance: a bizarre, rambling endorsement of Mitt Romney.
Clint, CAME across as sad and pathetic said the film critic Roger Ebert as Eastwood ad-libbed Thursday night to an audience of millions and one empty chair on stage at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla. Roger Ebert also said “He didn’t need to do this to himself. It’s unworthy of him.”

In the late 1970s, George Wallace announced that he was a born-again Christian and apologized to black civil rights leaders for his earlier segregationist positions. He said that while he had once sought power and glory, he realized he needed to seek love and forgiveness. In 1979, Wallace said of his stand in the schoolhouse door: “I was wrong. Those days are over, and they ought to be over.”
So to that extent he swore off his racist ways; one of a tiny handful of southern politicians to do so.
The others just defected en masse to the GOP…

I’m so glad so many Republican’s “got” Clint Eastwood. Like Clint saying Obama got us into war with Afghanistan and wrongly saying that Mitt Romney would bring the troops home tomorrow if he could.
Clint’s a smart guy. The line is shorter to the top if you’re a celebrity/woman/minority AND Republican. He might become the next Governator or perhaps the next Gipper. Republicans reward their non-male, non white, non ceo’s well. Talk about affirmative action.
I found it funny that the way the GOP chose to appeal to the American voter was painting themselves as the more socialist party. The party for medicare. The party for upward mobility. The party for racial equality. The party for gender equality. Funny because throughout this nations history, conservatives have been against all those things. They where against medicare. Reagan called it socialized medicine before anyone even knew what an ‘Obamacare’ was. Their hero Ayn Rand talked about rational self interest and called the poor leeches on society contributing nothing. They argued against a woman’s right to vote and cited the Bible saying that Eve had come from Adam’s ribs and so she should be subservient to man. And of course it was conservatives, who tried to stop blacks from voting, think that if you speak with a Mexican accent you should have to show your papers if an officer pulls you over.
The Republican party of Abe Lincoln is not the Republican party of today. That party was a progressive party. A party looking towards the future founded on the belief that slavery was immoral and that there should be a strong ‘REPUBLIC’ to set universal laws across the states that would make the US more unified. They where not the party of states rights. Interestingly enough it was the Democrats who believed in ‘MAJORITY RULE’ (aka Democracy is more important than a Republic) and they where the party of the conservatives. I am not here to lecture though, if you want to learn to about how the parties switched platforms you just have to go back and read up on the legacy of the las truly great Republican president, Teddy Roosevelt. Who’s anti fat cat and progressive policies caused a a split within the Republican party (which was always a party of elites) and eventually the progressives where forced to join the Democratic party which would not be 100% progressive until after the Voting Rights act was passed in the 60’s and the remaining racist and xenaphobic Dixiecrats/Reagan Democrats then left to the Republican party.
The Republicans always wanted this president to fail. And they hoped if they could just drive it through our skulls hard enough. If they could just get enough redneck uncles to forward birther conspiracy emails, if they could just get enough young people into Ron Paul – and then crush their hopes and dreams when they would eventually nominate Romney – that we would just forget about the 8 years that destroyed the economy and just blame the mulatto in office with the foreign sounding name.
Nice try. But hey, if that doesn’t work there’s always voter suppression..I mean stopping voter fraud *wink wink* Though I’m not sure how you are going to convince people that late voting or early morning voting contributes to voter fraud…but hey, you managed to have Paul Ryan go up there and lie for 20 or so minutes so you really are a party that has no shame.

Another website found that less than 0.0004% of votes are related to voter fraud, so the voter ID laws are really being used by the ultra conservative right wing GOP to silence the minority vote and raise their own polling numbers.
Whatever happened to moderate Republicans? I don’t see why the Republicans and Democrats can move financially to the center, and allow cultural progress to be made in favor of abortion rights and marriage for gay couples.
Those who oppose progress are going to be remembered on the wrong side of history, just as those who were against desegregation are laughed at today.
