As we slide into the Labor Day weekend, I cannot think of a more appropriate way to mark the holiday than to enlist some exceedingly rich people — all of them self-made capitalists of course — to sing the praises of the hard-working people, the lowly of birth, the rag-tagged people, the salt of the earth.
So … SAAALLLUTTTTE!

“dog, you truly are one badass blues kinda rocker, ain’t ya?”
Thanks mon.
I`m 61 and was lucky enough to get to live through the good stuff. I would climb to the top of south Ga. pine trees for transistor radio reception. Reception was best right before a thunder storm. (those cons don`t even know who they are dealing with do they?)
My son is the walking music history lesson. He has 37,000 songs on his iPad. All hand picked, no 100 here 100 there.

The good book says if your raise the children up in the way they should go, they will not deviate from it. (Or something like that.) While I’m not quite as “up there” as you are, I took that aspect of parenting seriously as well. Being able to “name the British supergroup” was an important travel game in our car!

Actually, the Dear Doctor lyics are so funny I will show them all:
Oh help me, please doctor, I’m damaged
There’s a pain where there once was a heart
It’s sleepin, it’s a beatin’
Can’t ya please tear it out, and preserve it
Right there in that jar?
Oh help me, please mama, I’m sick’ning
It’s today that’s the day of the plunge
Oh the gal I’m to marry
Is a bow-legged sow
I’ve been soakin’ up drink like a sponge
“Don’t ya worry, get dressed,” cried my mother
As she plied me with bourbon so sour
Pull your socks up, put your suit on
Comb your long hair down,
For you will be wed in the hour
So help me, please doctor, I’m damaged
There’s a pain where there once was a heart
I’m sleepin, it’s a beatin’
Can’t ya please take it out, and preserve it
Right there in that jar?
Oh help me, please doctor, I’m damaged
There’s a pain where there once was a heart
It’s sleepin, it’s a beatin’
Can’t ya please tear it out, and preserve it
Right there in that jar?
I was tremblin’, as I put on my jacket
It had creases as sharp as a knife
I put the ring in my pocket
But there was a note
And my heart it jumped into my mouth
It read, “Darlin’, I’m sorry to hurt you.
But I have no courage to speak to your face.
But I’m down in Virginia with your cousin Lou
There be no wedding today.”
So help me, please doctor, I’m damaged
You can put back my heart in its hole
Oh mama, I’m cryin’
Tears of relief
And my pulse is now under control

Yeah Jam, I went thru a period before rock came out when I listened to all the military branches songs.
And then there the unofficial branch songs. like the U.S. Marine Corps version of “Bless ‘em all.” Oscar Brand recorded the best version, but it is not on YouTube. Here are salient lyrics:
We sent for the Army to come to Tulagi
But General McArthur said no,
I’ll tell you the reason it isn’t the season
Besides you’ve got no USO.
Well we sent for the Navy to come to Tulagi
The dear little Navy agreed,
In ten thousand sections from eighteen directions
Oh Lord what a screwed up stampede.
Then we sent for the Air Force to come to Tulagi
The Air Force appeared on the scene,
And They bombed out two donkeys, five horses three monkeys
And seven platoons of Gyrenes.
Then we sent for the Coast Guard to come to Tulagi
And waited for them to appear,
They sent back a letter we like it here better
But maybe we’ll make it next year.
Then we sent for the nurses to come to Tulagi
The nurses they made it with ease,
Their arse on the table each bearing this label
Reserved for the officers please.
Bless ‘em all, bless ‘em all
Bless ‘em all, bless ‘em all
The long and the short and the tall,
Bless all the sergeants and corporals too
Bless all the privates and above all bless you
So we’re saying good bye to them all
As back to our fox holes we’ll crawl,
There’ll be no promotion this side of the ocean
So cheer up my lads bless ‘em all.

skydog, my mom lives in North Platte, Nebraska. If you head south out of town on Hwy. 83, you do not hit another town until you get to McCook, about 60 miles away.
And going north out of town, it is even more remote!
I remember getting up on cold winter Saturday mornings, hopping on my bike and delivering the North Platte Telegraph and I could hear Union Pacific trains 30 miles or more away.
That quiet seems so damn far away now…
