Gov. Nathan Deal faced a choice. He could choose to be loyal to his party’s political ideology, or he could choose to be loyal to some 650,000 of his fellow Georgians in need of health insurance.
He has chosen loyalty to party, declining to let Georgia participate in the expansion of Medicaid coverage offered through Obamacare. The result will be unnecessary illness, unnecessary pain and yes, unnecessary death. That may sound harsh, but it is also stark reality: When you deny health -care coverage to hundreds of thousands of people, as Deal has decided to do, those outcomes are inevitable.
There will be other consequences as well. The decision blocks an influx of billions and billions of federal health -care dollars — an estimated $14.5 billion between 2014 and 2019 alone — that would provoke significant job growth. Georgia taxpayers will be paying to fund that expanded coverage in other states, most of which will take it eagerly, but their governor has decided that they’ll get none of the benefits.
Turning that money away will also raise the risk of closure by rural hospitals, which are already struggling under the financial burden of providing so much care to the uninsured. (Last year, Georgia hospitals lost an estimated $1.5 billion caring for people without insurance, and rural residents are more likely to be uninsured than their urban and suburban counterparts.)
Medicaid expansion would have been a lifesaver to those hospitals and to the doctors who practice there, but that lifesaver has now been yanked away. That will have significant economic-development implications for Georgia beyond the immediate loss of federal dollars. The availability of modern health -care facilities is a prime consideration for any business or industry looking to relocate. As rural hospitals close and doctors leave, employers will leave as well, taking with them the last hope of prosperity for many small communities.
In announcing his decision at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Deal cited the potential cost to Georgia taxpayers, which his administration estimates at $4.5 billion over a 10-year period. However, independent cost estimates put the state’s share of expansion much lower. The Kaiser Family Foundation estimates it at $714 million for the first five years of the program, or roughly 0.17 percent of state GDP. The Urban Institute puts it at $716 million for the first six years.
However, as Tim Sweeney of the Georgia Budget and Policy Institute points out, even the governor’s figure of $4.5 billion “would represent only a 1.9 percent increase in total state spending.”
In assessing the costs, you also have to look at two other things: How great is the need for expanded health coverage in Georgia, and how much does the state already spend? Are we already spending as much if not more than other states?
Hardly. Georgia is 47th in state health spending per capita. It is 49th in the amount it spends per Medicaid patient. Twenty percent of our citizens are uninsured, the fifth-highest uninsured rate in the nation, and we stand at 39th in life expectancy. Yet according to the governor, we can’t afford to address any of those issues, even if it means a stronger state economy and better health care and longer lives for hundreds of thousands of Georgians.
We can, however, afford hundreds of millions of dollars to build a new Falcons stadium, not to mention billions of dollars in tax breaks to businesses. Priorities, you know.

Republicans elected the fool. Now they have to live with the consequences. Will the party base step up to the plate and show how charitable they are and take care of these people. No. Sure, a few people will get a little care but no effort by churches across the state will come close to matching the billions in funds from the fed. So, the poor and destitute and ill will be ignored and if anyone asks about them, I’m sure the Real Deal will be quick to tell us how he made sure they were all given equal opportunity to pull themselves up by their bootstraps, like any true follower of the teachings of Christ would do.

Why is this a suprise. He’s going to choose whomever butters’ his bread. And that would be the RGA. The Republican Governors Association has been against the ACA since the start. And since the RGA helped Deal by pouring millions of dollars into the election in 2010, he is going to decide the way they want him to decide.
But we can give over $1Billion in tax incentives in the hope they will bring jobs.

Gov. Deal is right to turn away “billions and billions of federal health-care dollars”. It’s easy to forget that we are federal taxpayers, too. And that’s money the government doesn’t even have – they borrow ~ 40% of every dollar just to pay the bills.

Looking at historical evidence in which the Federal Government moves the costs of their programs from their budget to that of the states after a few years Gov. Deal made a wise decision. THe Feds are only promising a few years of payment at which they can bail and leave the state with the cost of funding the program. Oscar,
You are correct. I found this in the AJC. They extended the hotel tax. I think the GWCC still has to actually spend the funds. I believe Kyle has blogged about the opportunity cost of the stadium, how this tax money can’t be used for other things (spent elsewhere, debt reduction, other tax reductions).
On April 14, 2010, the GOP-controlled House – with near unanimous support from the minority party — gave final, overwhelming approval to HB 903, a bill to permit the extension of the existing hotel/motel tax in Fulton County until the year 2050.
A Republican-controlled Senate had bestowed its similar, oversized blessing one day earlier. A Republican governor, Sonny Perdue, signed HB 903 into law.

Republicans live in a fantasy world where one day you wake up and decide to get a job. So you just go to the job store and pick the most appealing option from the shelf full of available jobs. The vast majority of unemployed adults (of all political beliefs) would prefer to be employed over taking a handout. Corporate profits are back to or near pre-recession levels and many companies are sitting on all time high piles of cash while doling out large bonuses to the Cs & Vs but refuse to add staff. Maybe they should’ve had Honey Boo Boo up there talking to the chair.

They did have more viewers than Honey Boo Boo.

As usual, the liberal press in it’s disparate attempt to reverse the march of sanity coming to this years election, misleads, distorts and factually misrepresents anything Republican. Many states have opted out of medicaid because of real and threatened cuts to meidicaid by the Obama administration and the very real possiblility of all of the costs of the program being shifted to the tax payers of each state. Governor Deal is representing each of us by not going along with this non sense. Forbes magazine said: “states have a significant fiscal incentive to drop out of Obamacare’s expansion of the Medicaid program. States fear, among other things, that the federal government will shift more of the program’s costs to the states over time, leaving states with an unsustainable spending commitment. It turns out that this fear isn’t merely theoretical. During the “supercommittee” deficit-reduction talks last year, President Obama proposed reducing federal funding for the Medicaid expansion by $100 billion over ten years, with states picking up the difference. No wonder governors from both parties are thinking twice about the program.”
“It’s not free,” says Florida Gov. Rick Scott (R.). “You’re still paying it…they’re only going to cover [all of the Medicaid expansion] in the first three years. Then Florida taxpayers are going to be on the hook…Eventually we’ll be on the hook for 50, 45 percent of it”

If it were my decision, I would make it illegal for states to give tax breaks to companies like they currently do. Those large companies already enjoy tax breaks that the mom & pop operators can only dream of. Call me crazy or whatever, but if supply sided tax cuts are supposed to be stimulative, they shouldn’t be tossed like Mardi Gras beads to get jobs.
I think it’s sad that any state or city has to pay a company just to get them to locate somewhere. When you give a bully an inch, he’ll take a foot. When you give him that foot, he’ll take a yard. By the time he takes that yard, you are completely owned. Thanks to politicians, citizens have given up a thousand yards.

Georgia will be just fine!!
Maybe all the uninsured will move to the states that is participating in the expansion of Medicaid coverage, then the hospitals and doctors here in Georgia won’t have to write off all the deadbeats that don’t pay.

Anyone paying attention to the South China Sea tensions between Japan, the P. I., China and the U. S. A. would know this.
China has warned us recently to stay out of their affairs in the area. That’s funny. I remember in the Navy, we used to practice exercises on the supposition that China and we would get into it over those islands…

So voting one way or another doesnt make a difference ………. Okay, explain this.
A recount confirms Debbie Whitlock as the winner in the Stephens County Commission Post 2 Republican run-off, but only by a single vote.
Whitlock won the recount for the Stephens County Commission Post 2 race by one vote Thursday evening over Ray Willis.
The final count was 1,508 for Whitlock and 1,507 for Willis. That one-vote margin is one vote narrower than the two votes that separated the candidates in the results from Election Night.
Whitlock lost one vote in the mail-in absentee ballot count, going from 97 to 96. Her other vote totals remained the same.
Willis’ vote total remained the same across all categories and precincts.
Willis said Thursday evening he was still considering his options moving forward.
According to Stephens County Registrar Theresa Kelley, any further challenge to the election results would have to be made in Superior Court in Stephens County.
There is no Democratic or Independent opposition on the November ballot for the Post 2 race.
The recount took more than an hour as both candidates and representatives for both candidates were on hand to watch the recount. During the recount, Kelley and the Board of Elections first re-counted mail-in absentee ballots, than re-counted ballots cast electronically on machines, all following the same process that is done on Election Night itself.

The cynical part of me almost wishes that Romney would win just so the Repuplicans can be given full credit for the wreckage their policies create. However, they have fielded the most unlikeable candidate since…Michael Dukakis? (Note for political parties: Massachussets governors, not all they’re cracked up to be). If the polls done this weekend don’t hand Romney the electoral college, fuggitaboutit.
On topic, the only possible reason for the Deal deal is pure politics. This is expected to be a base election. So, it’s all about getting the base fired up. Sad that Georgians will have to suffer because Deal is choosing to play into the national party narrative.
While Georgia should be a comfortable win for Romney, some polls showed his lead slipping back to the margin of error in recent weeks. Have to remember that in 2008, Georgia almost elected a Democratic senator in what was supposed to be a walk-away for the Republicans. I guess this is a play-to-the-base while they’re tuned in kind of move.
Given the demographic changes in the country, this is probably the last presidential election where the Republican coalition as it has been constituted for the last thirty plus years will stand a chance of winning. In general, the population is becoming, more diverse, more educated, more secular, and more urban, and the pre-Baby Boom generation is dying off.
Can the party of Jan Brewer become the party of Latinos? Seems like a stretch.

“That will have significant economic-development implications for Georgia beyond the immediate loss of federal dollars. The availability of modern health -care facilities is a prime consideration for any business or industry looking to relocate. As rural hospitals close and doctors leave, employers will leave as well, taking with them the last hope of prosperity for many small communities.”
With all due respect, the “last hope for prosperity” is not federal dollars. It is economic growth and opportunity.
In the end, Deal likely hinged his political future to Romney with this action.

“or he could choose to be loyal to some 650,000 of his fellow Georgians in need of health insurance.”
I see. So loyalty means forcibly taking money from one group of people to give more free shyte to another group of people. Got it.
“When you deny health -care coverage to hundreds of thousands of people, as Deal has decided to do, those outcomes are inevitable.”
So is Deal telling these people right now that they are not allowed to go to a Doctor or a hospital? And if so then are you telling me that for years and years that 650,000 Georgians have been denied healthcare because they weren’t given Medicaid?
“There will be other consequences as well. The decision blocks an influx of billions and billions of federal health -care dollars — an estimated $14.5 billion between 2014 and 2019 alone — that would provoke significant job growth.”
Really? Transfer programs promote “significant” job growth. Well allrighty then. Let’s put everyone on Medicaid and watch the Georgia economy go BOOM.
“Medicaid expansion would have been a lifesaver to those hospitals and to the doctors who practice there, but that lifesaver has now been yanked away.”
You sure about that Jay? Getting paid in the case of hospitals by Medicaid is better than nothing but in the case of Doctors most doctors say that treating Medicaid patients actually costs them money. The reimbursement rate does not adequately compensate them for treating the patient. Is it any wonder that so many Docs do not take Medicaid?
“Turning that money away will also raise the risk of closure by rural hospitals, which are already struggling under the financial burden of providing so much care to the uninsured.”
You can also help those rural hospitals and docs via tort reform. Jackpot justice in some rural counties has driven obstetricians out of business throughout the south.
“The decision blocks an influx of billions and billions of federal health -care dollars”
Jesus H. Christ. Typical liberal. You act like this is all free money. Good God sir. Don’t you realize that we all have to pay this money back? Don’t you know that?
“However, as Tim Sweeney of the Georgia Budget and Policy Institute points out, even the governor’s figure of $4.5 billion “would represent only a 1.9 percent increase in total state spending.”
History lesson sir. Go back and look at what the govt initially said Medicare and Medicaid would cost. Then look at the astounding difference between the projected costs and the actual costs. When you do that you will realize that your argument has no credibility. None.
As it stands now Medicaid on average consumes 22% of state budgets. Now someone said the other day its up to an average of 30%. Not sure about that but I know its average the last time I looked it up was at 22%. And that is a staggering amount of money for one item.
“We can, however, afford hundreds of millions of dollars to build a new Falcons stadium, not to mention billions of dollars in tax breaks to businesses. Priorities, you know.”
I’ll agree with you on the Falcons stadium. But as usual your fallacious thinking on tax breaks to businesses needs to be addressed. First of all when you give a tax break you’re not actually giving money to anyone. You’re simply confiscating less money from them. Despite what liberals think when someone earns their money its their money first and foremost- not the gubments money.
Secondly, by giving these “tax breaks” these businesses employ people and the business and the paychecks of their employees pay sales taxes, state income taxes, local taxes, a lot of taxes that pay for you guessed it- Medicaid and other govt largesse.
Thirdly, many of these businesses pay enough that their employees can then go out and get their own insurance or the business has a generous group plan that pays for health insurance. That’s that many fewer unemployed people that will be on the Medicaid rolls.

There’s that good old Obook/bama logic: state spending means, (let me make sure I get his own words right) “a stronger state economy and better health care and longer lives for hundreds of thousands of Georgians”. Yes, there it is, folks, the sum total of Democrat philosophy; and if you care, socialist, communist, anti-American etc. It must be a wonder to these folks that American society existed and thrived before the “Great Society”.
It did you know, Mr. Bookman.
And government isn’t the answer to everything. The greatest crisis we face now isn’t what they think it is either. If the US goes the way of Obama, the way of budget-less knee-jerk wasteful spending–that is, the way of Greece and the soon-to-be plunging European economy–then how many billions of dollars we need or we need to save for healthcare won’t matter, because those billions will hardly buy what they can today. Not only can Democrats not address this grave problem (nor the economy, by the way), but they can not even acknowledge it, or at least they won’t until Romney takes office.
The answer to all of this isn’t government, indeed not. The answer is less of it.
For attempting to forego, as much as possible, the federal government’s coercion on healthcare Deal should be congratulated and applauded.
Let’s not forget either that Obamacare wasn’t so much a cost-bending program (the intent of cost-bending has failed utterly anyway), but it was a cost-shifting plan. Medicare, Obamacare, Medicaid, who knows what went where?
Obama sure doesn’t, nor does he care. Obamacare? That’s the recipe for, “unnecessary illness, unnecessary pain and yes, unnecessary death.” And single-payer healthcare is the prescription for the “death panel” politburo created by Obamacare.

It would be like you refusing to take tax deductions out of “principal.” We, Georgians, are STILL going to pay that damn money, only;y thanks to Deal we get nothing for it. Although I’ll bet he or someone close to him stands to profit big time by him sticking it to us once again.

This whole thing could be wrapped up in a neat little package, and Obama would be dealt a bonecrushing, debilitating blow if Romney released 10-12 years of tax returns about a month before the election. I’m just entirely flabbergasted that the Romney handlers passed on the opportunity to bring everything to an end in Tampa with a blockbuster revelation of his honesty, and patriotism by showing us how he made his money, thus giving us a glimpse of how he’d lead the country out of an obvious morass…..instead he gives us a washed up actor and a chair.

I think Governor Deal has already been a better governor than many expected, and is certainly head and shoulders above the previous occupant of that office. But this is simply a very bad decision. I understand the economic pain that state government has endured and the tough choices that have to be made, but he seems to be basing his decision to deny health care to many struggling Georgians on the basis of faulty numbers and political gamesmanship. We hope and pray that he will reconsider. This is a cruel decision that will leave a legacy that no governor should wish to claim.

This must be the rhetorical over-exaggeration of the day.
Americans need to be far more concerned about how Obama’s spending OUR money than how Romney made his.
Besides, if you want, you can buy the book, The Real Romney, written by leftists also. They have some idea how he made his money, but you don’t care about that, do you?

Fred, and do you agree with everything he writes just out of sheer hate for the cons? Cause it sure looks that way much of the time.
“Deal turning down the cash was stupid and pointless.”
That’s your opinion and there isn’t much factual basis to it. First of all we have to pay a lot of those federal dollars. This notion that these “federal dollars” are free is mindnumbingly stupid. And even if those federal dollars were free money the cost to the state in future years is not.
All I ask you to do is one thing Fred. Go google the initial projected costs of Medicare and Medicaid and then compare it to the eventual ACTUAL costs. At that point you will then understand why it simply will not be affordable. Besides as RB pointed out Obamacare solved the uninsurance problem. People are now required to buy insurance or pay a fine/tax.
“A grandstanding gesture that will cost more in the long run but it’s not his money so he doesn’t care.”
Again. Look at history sir. Look at the historical projected vs actual costs of Medicaid. You will then understand that accepting the Medicaid provision will cost us more in the long run.

A player picks up a muffed punt only 7 yards from the goal line and a touchdown. He proceeds to return it in the opposite direction that would give his opponents 2 points and possession of the ball. What does the opposing team do? They tackle him before he can return the punt all the way back to the wrong endzone.

I love it home boy. Keep voting me tax cuts and I should be able to get it down to 0%. Or better yet, i can get a check from some hard working middle class worker who makes 1/4 or our household income to help defray the 20 grand I year I pay for private school for my elementary school aged daughter.
Keep voting Republican, I WANT more money to go out to Bones. I LOVE going to concerts and such. We have AWESOME healthcare so I don’t care that Nathan screwed 650,000 fellow Georgians. It doesn’t effect me one bit. Your Republican caused economy crash means my house value went WAY down. As a result my property taxes dropped like a rock. Thanks.
The crappy economy also meant the interest rates went way down as well. I was able to get a loan on my house at 2.75% for ten years which I promptly bought stock with since the stock market was down as well. It’s climbed up and I’ve made a bundle.
I’m LOVING not having to pay the same tax rate as the middle class. But I’m not going to sit here and say it’s RIGHT, because it’s not. It’s a damn travesty.
But I’m gonna suck it up while I can. Because one day, even brain washed right wing fanatics like you are going to get tired of footing the bill for my awesome lifestyle. And a big congratulations to the feds. The improved flood control system worked. This $14 billion project worked and We Built That! We probably saved a big part of the cost during this one storm.
Regarding Deal, he will handle this the same way the pubs handled the unemployment insurance fund. They gave tax breaks and depleted the fund during good times. Then, when the economy went south they borrowed money from the feds. I’m sure Deal thinks he can go to the feds, when the health care crisis hits Georgia.
If the US was serious about bringing down the cost of healthcare, we would put a big tax on the sweeteners that are making us obese, just like we tax tobacco. We would also require no fault insurance for gun owners, so the taxpayers do not have to pay for the treatment of uninsured victims of gun violence. During a trip to Epcot at Disneyworld, Pennsylvania delegate Mark Harris [R] and his wife were shocked and offended to find a Mexican employee working at the amusement park’s American pavilion, which showcases the different cultures in the United States. According to the couple’s blog, Harris complained to staff that he was “highly offended” that a “person from Mexico” was working in the American pavilion when other nations’ pavilions were staffed by people from each respective country

Sad thing is, none our loyal opposition party (that’d be them Democrats) rhetoric will match this for clarity, and it should. But it won’t.

Last month, President Obama’s reelection campaign filed a lawsuit claiming that a recently enacted Ohio law eliminating early voting in the three days before an election, except for members of the military, violates the Constitution’s guarantee that all voters enjoy equal access to the franchise. The campaign’s lawsuit called for the right of all voters to cast an early ballot be restored in Ohio — it explicitly stated that expanding the franchise, not taking early voting away from military personnel as well, was the appropriate outcome.
In an opinion by Judge Peter Economus, a federal court agreed with the Obama campaign on Friday that the Ohio anti-voter law must be suspended:
“A citizen has a constitutionally protected right to participate in elections on an equal basis with other citizens in the jurisdiction.” In Ohio, that right to participate equally has been abridged by Ohio Revised Code ‘ 3509.03 and the Ohio Secretary of State’s further interpretation of that statute with regard to in-person early voting. In 2005, Ohio expanded participation in absentee balloting and in-person early voting to include all registered Ohio voters. Now, “in-person early voting” has been redefined by the Ohio legislature to limit Plaintiffs’ access to the polls. This Court must determine whether preliminary injunctive relief should be granted to Plaintiffs on their claim that Ohio’s restriction of in-person early voting deprives them of their fundamental right to vote. Following Supreme Court precedent, this Court concludes that Plaintiffs have stated a constitutional claim that is likely to succeed on the merits. As a result—and as explained below—this Court grants Plaintiffs’ motion for preliminary injunction.
Amusingly, the court’s opinion relies on the Supreme Court’s infamous decision in Bush v. Gore to reach this holding, citing Bush‘s statement that “[h]aving once granted the right to vote on equal terms, the State may not, by later arbitrary and disparate treatment, value one person’s vote over that of another.”
Wonder if Paragraph 12 Denier Recon and the other conned will start whining and lie more about this one.

Fred,
How the hell do you only pay a 9% tax rate. You’ve stated on here several times that you draw $19,500 a month in retirement income which is taxed at ordinary income tax rates. You would be in the top rate. So how did you pay only 9%. In order to do that you would have to have capital gains taxes and losses in extraordinary amounts to offset that income to get down to an average of 9%. Mitt Romney has 200 million and after accounting for capital gains losses against capital gains he still could only get his rate down to 13% the last couple of years.

Since you lie you accuse others of that lack of moral character. It helps you feel better about yourself for being a liar.

GREAT NEWS FOR DEMOCRACY!!!
Federal Judge Restores Early Voting In Ohio After Obama Suit
A federal judge in Ohio on Friday restored early voting rights in the three days before the election, ruling in favor of the Obama campaign.
U.S. District judge Peter C. Economus ruled that “restoring in-person early voting to all Ohio voters through the Monday before Election Day does not deprive UOCAVA voters from early voting.”
“Instead, and more importantly, it places all Ohio voters on equal standing,” Economus ruled. He said the state “fails to articulate a precise, compelling interest in establishing the 6 p.m. Friday deadline as applied to non-UOCAVA voters and has failed to evidence any commitment to the ‘exception’ it rhetorically extended to UOCAVA voters.”
The Romney campaign had falsely accused Obama of trying to curtail military voting when the suit simply sought to force the state to make early voting available to all Ohio voters.

No, but Republican denial and lack of taking responsibility for the situation do nothing to help their cause. Repeating the insane mantra that bringing up Bush is taboo does not work with me. Nor does the new Republican mantra of “trust us” without any details.
Republicans can run from Bush all they want, I hope Democrats mention his name 100,000 times at their convention next week, reminding people of the disaster he left behind and the current Republican fools who have no idea how to fix the mess. Making sure Obama is a one term president is not a strategy to fix things. Twenty percent of our [Georgia] citizens are uninsured… -Bookman
Depending on the statistical source (CDC, USA Today, etc) anywhere from one-third to forty percent of Americans are obese. ONE-THIRD TO FORTY PERCENT. If you were serious about the health of Americans, Mr. Bookman, you’d ask them why they CHOOSE to be obese. That particular personal CHOICE subjects them to chronic and expensive to treat medical issues like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension and all the related problems that go along with them. Diseases that could be prevented by simply maintaining a healthy body weight. These are the diseases of choice and tremendous health care costs that could be avoided.
But then, you’re not interested in the health of Americans, Bookman, you’re just interested in controlling one-sixth of the American economy so Dem politicians can funnel these resources to their political cronies like the unions. Health care costs go up just like state university tuition and related operating costs and no end in site.

Oy vey. Few people I know CHOOSE to be obese. Many have had bad eating habits from their parents, low priced food (as a result of USDA funding choices) are high calorie, and there are new studies that show that certain food products/chemicals and BPA containers may actually be in part or in some cases wholly responsible for encouraging fat storage. Of course, the lobbyist for those producers fight to keep their products in the marketplace without proper warning.
Perhaps instead of false blame, help to provide them real education about healthy eating, mrestaurantsants provide the calorie content of their meals on the menu so people know how much they really are getting in that portion, etc., etc.

Whining about people making poor choices does not fix anything. If you educate people and convince them to change their way of life, then you have a chance at keeping many of them out of the emergency rooms where they get very expensive care and ultimately increase the cost of health insurance for everyone above the cost to keep them healthy in the first place. And if the few that claim to be able to stay healthy forever and never need unaffordable healthcare do not want to pick up their tab for continuous coverage, they have options. They should feel free to exercise one of them.

Obama: “The Affirmative Action President”
“Years from now, historians may regard the 2008 election of Barack Obama as an inscrutable and disturbing phenomenon, a baffling breed of mass hysteria akin perhaps to the witch craze of the Middle Ages. How, they will wonder, did a man so devoid of professional accomplishment beguile so many into thinking he could manage the world’s largest economy, direct the world’s most powerful military, execute the world’s most consequential job?
Imagine a future historian examining Obama’s pre-presidential life: ushered into and through the Ivy League despite unremarkable grades and test scores along the way; a cushy non-job as a “community organizer”; a brief career as a state legislator devoid of legislative achievement (and in fact nearly devoid of his attention, so often did he vote “present”); and finally an unaccomplished single term in United States Senate, the entirety of which was devoted to his presidential ambitions. He left no academic legacy in academia, authored no signature legislation as legislator.
And then there is the matter of his troubling associations: the white-hating, America-loathing preacher who for decades served as Obama’s “spiritual mentor”; a real-life, actual terrorist who served as Obama’s colleague and political sponsor. It is easy to imagine a future historian looking at it all and asking: how on Earth was such a man elected president?
Not content to wait for history, the incomparable Norman Podhoretz addressed the question recently in the Wall Street Journal:
To be sure, no white candidate who had close associations with an outspoken hater of America like Jeremiah Wright and an unrepentant terrorist like Bill Ayers would have lasted a single day. But because Mr. Obama was black, and therefore entitled in the eyes of liberaldom to have hung out with protesters against various American injustices, even if they were a bit extreme, he was given a pass.”

Fred,
I may have to talk to my accountant cause I still can’t figure out for the life of me how you only pay 9%. Your wife’s income is ordinary income so again that puts you at or near the top marginal tax bracket. The math still doesn’t make any sense as to how you could have enough tax losses through your company to offset your wife’s earnings and reduce your rate all the way down to 9%. You using Mitt’s accountant?

Thulsa: I don’t know lol. I’m an S-corp so the company losses are deducted from our joint tax return. my accountant does my company and then our personal return and we sign it and wait for the money to come back. I never really checked for percentage before this year, just looked at how much we were paying. But when I looked at the figure this year I was like WHAT? That can’t be right. That’s less than 10 percent. But it was right. Now my wife is back in school for her doctorate and I think we can deduct THAT money and I’m going to go back to school in January and I know we can deduct that money as it will be “training” for my new Computer Company.
I wouldn’t be surprised (if they keep the taxes like they are now) if we end up paying less than 5% on gross income next year. Maybe even 0% depending on the start up costs of the computer business. I haven’t decided which route to take.

“Besides, without knowing exact numbers, you can visit someone and know if they live in a trailer park or a decent neighborhood……….”
Yes and no. Got a close personal friend that was doing real well and then his business went south. He got foreclosed on his $2 million dollar house, sold his ferrari at a huge loss, had a porsche that he sold at a big loss also. Basically he lost everything but like a fool he was living beyond his means. And then I do business with another man whose uncle lives in a double wide trailer. The uncle has over 2 million dollars but he is happy in his trailer. He bought it when he was just starting out and just never wanted to move. I’ve seen a few people in million dollar homes get evicted. Happens all the time. And lately it seems like there is always some athlete or big time entertainer declaring bankruptcy or getting foreclosed on. Its remarkable.
Anyway, I was asking because I’m not quite there yet but at the rate that I’m going I will be in that high bracket where I’ve got to get my taxes substantially reduced. No mortgage though, no car payments, cash in the bank with no debt owed so in that regards I’m fine but I don’t have the 7 figures yet. Not even close.

Washington Post:
“Just days before a congressional deadline, the Obama administration is deeply divided over whether to designate the Pakistan-based Haqqani network as a terrorist group, with some officials worried that doing so could complicate efforts to restart peace talks with the Taliban and undermine already-fraught relations with Pakistan.
Early this month, Congress gave Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton 30 days to determine whether the Haqqani group, considered the most lethal opponent of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, meets the criteria for designation — a foreign organization engaging in terrorist activity that threatens U.S. citizens or national security.”

I think it was Doggone/Ga that brought up her consumption of a certain soft drink. When it was manufactured using HFCS she craved it almost as an addict. I believe she said she switched to a non HFCS based soft drink and her consumption decreased.

After it emerged that Obama was still taking time to fit in a campaign stop in Cleveland, Ohio before checking out how clean-up operations are proceeding in the Bayou state, the Obama campaign abruptly cancelled that event.
‘In light of the President’s travel to Louisiana to meet with local officials and view ongoing response and recovery efforts to Hurricane Isaac, President Obama will no longer travel to Cleveland, Ohio on Monday, September 3,’ the campaign said in a terse statement.
Romney had changed his schedule to head to an affected town outside New Orleans while Obama, who has yet to visit the Tropical Storm Isaac zone, headed off to Texas to campaign.”

You’re right of course about the associations. What we got in Romney was actually a hyper-decent human being, despite the fact that most of us conservatives wanted something else.
The pendulum does not swing both ways however, because Democrat nominee’s stories don’t have to be told at convention. They are carried for free by the media, in glowing analyses and ubiquitous puff pieces.
I noticed criticism last night on CNN, wherein Anderson Cooper (would he have gerbils JamVet?) criticized Romney for not telling his story. For being either too proud or too humble, (or both) Republicans may be criticized openly. For Democrats to be criticized they need to be…..well, we’re still waiting for CNN to criticize the President for something substantial.
Remember, the open advocacy of the liberal press began 30 years ago with Reagan. Succeeding Jimmy Carter, Reagan was the apparent creator of a heretofore unreported enormous homeless problem.

Not intended to be a factual statement…. The conned just don’t seem to understand that if its not true, its not a “fact”.

Carvel’s polling out today. It ain’t good for Barry. Now, polls on here to these loons only matter when their man looks good. The bad news is it’s still a electoral college event and that is in the Kings favor, but closing. Too many things have to line up for Mitt to unseat this guy. The polls are not good for Barry though. Can’t answer the state by state polling. It’s been a steady decline for Barry since Ryan came on……..But they will show you a MSNBC poll in a minute showing Barry up by 15……………………………………9,8,7,6………..any second now

Mr. Marcus, South Africa doesn’t have Republicans…
Reagan and the racist South African regime. Reagan was very slow to criticize the South African Apartheid regime. He vetoed economic sanctions against the regime (Congress overrode the veto). Reagan’s political ally, the Reverend Jerry Falwell, traveled to South Africa and endorsed the apartheid regime– encouraging his flock to buy Kruggarands in order to offset sanctions against the regime. Falwell referred to Nobel laureate Bishop Desmond Tutu as a “phony.” (Note: during the 1960’s, Falwell used the Bible to justify the preservation of Jim Crow laws by arguing that blacks were stricken with the “Curse of Ham” and thus, it was God’s plan that they be submissive to white people).
• In 1983, as a show to the South, Reagan fired three members of the U.S. Civil Rights Commission and replaced them with right-wing ideologues.

During these past four days at the RNC convention, janitors have worked around the clock picking up after delegates, conservative stars like Ann Coulter and Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.), and the thousands of reporters in cavernous filing rooms. And many are doing so making less than minimum wage.
Carolyn Walker said she has been cleaning the convention center for 13 years. She had been making $8 per hour until a few years ago, when the cleaning contract went to another company, Cleanevent USA. The new company meant a new, downsized paycheck. She’s now making minimum wage — $7.67 per hour. But that wasn’t the only hit to her wallet.
Walker said the company charges her $6 per week for uniforms. “It stinks to tell you the truth,” she said. “We work very hard.” It effectively means she’s making less than Florida’s minimum wage.

Reagan denigrated the Voting Rights Act of 1965. A little background on the Act: Prior to the passing of the Act, voting by blacks in states in the deep South was less than 10 percent. This was largely because of sham literacy tests, in 1980, far from applauding the numerous injustices that the Voting Rights Act remedied, Reagan denounced it, declaring that it was “humiliating to the South.”

Brocephus,
I don’t call this out because in my view its factually accurate EXCEPT for one thing. I would have replaced the word “white” candidate with liberal or Democratic candidate. Reason being that liberal candidates white or black get a pass for past racist associations but for now let’s just examine the white ones- Robert Byrd as a former Klan leader, George Wallace as a former segregationist, Al Gore’s own daddy, Bill Clinton’s mentor Senator from Arkansas who I think was also a segregationist, and on and on. Harry Reid with the negro dialect comments. If Reid was an R the media would have raised hell and demand that he step down. What he said was dramatically worse than what Trent Lott said- though I despise Trent Lott for wholly separate reasons as a hypocrite and big spender.
I don’t think there is any question that there is a double standard. I just disagree with the poster and I believe that he mistakenly believes its based on race. I can see why but its not. I think its based on ideology and party affiliation.

Reagan attempted to revoke the federal ban on tax exemptions for private schools that practiced racial discrimination.
• Reagan used a stop at the Neshoba County Fair in his 1980 campaign to inject dog whistle politics aimed at unreconstructed Southern segregationists by the tactical use of code words like “states’ rights.”
• In 1986, Reagan nominated Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III to be a judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Alabama. During the confirmation hearings, it was disclosed that Sessions had engaged in a pattern of behavior that was hostile to civil rights and racial equality. Sessions had referred to the ACLU and the NAACP as “communist-inspired” and un-American because they “forced civil rights down our throats.” Thomas Figues, a black Assistant U.S. Attorney testified that Sessions said he thought that the Ku Klux Klan was “okay until I found out they smoked pot.” Figures also testified that Sessions called him “boy” and testified that “Mr. Sessions admonished me to ‘be careful what you say to white folks.’”

Ohbarrassment,
I am not pretending anything. I merely stated my observation based on what I’ve read from you today. There’s a difference.
As to the healing you speak of re: the election of this President, yes, I have seen some healing. The racism of my grandparent’s generation is but a fraction of what it once was, although the few hold-outs are scary indeed. The difference between my parents’ views on race at the age my children are now, and those of my children, is vast. With Obama’s election, one big milestone of a racist society was erased: The notion that any American kid could grow up and be President — unless he’s black. If you’re white, you probably never thought much about it, but I guarantee you that black children heard that unspoken “unless” loud and clear. That is no more, and that is a good thing, regardless of how you feel about this President’s limited ability to clean up the colossal mess he inherited.
More healing is needed, though. Those who seek shall find.

HDB,
Well we have a little bit of agreement. I wouldn’t say thought that you can understand it better than I can with the suggestion being you can understand it better cause you are black. That right there seems to be a fairly racist view.
but the problem is that too many on one side still have the racial animus…”
Not quite. I’ve known white people who have low opinions of black people. But then I’ve known Indian and Asian people who have low opinions of black people also. Doesn’t make an entire race bigoted. But of all the white people I’ve known that may have some negative views of blacks I’ve never known any of them that go out of their way to screw black people out of a job, promotion, or a business contract. As a matter of fact I’ve seen the opposite. I know lots of white people that go out of their way to see that a black person gets a fair shot either at employment or at their business or just at things in general. I think there is a mentality amongst “some” not all black people that white people wake up every day looking for a way that they can screw a black man out of an opportunity or just looking for a way that can screw a minority person out of something. And that is simply not true.
“and too many on the other are looking for payback!! Pure and simple…”
I see more of that than anything else. And that’s a shame. Two wrongs do not equal a right. But there is one thing that I’ve seen several times in life that I find disturbing and that is this black tribalism. Everyone has it but it seems much more prevalent amongst blacks. I’ll give you a quick example. My girlfriend was laying in bed the other night watching this stupid show she watches about all these mothers who have their daughters in a competitive dance school. 5 white ladies and a black lady. The black lady happens to be my gf’s favorite and from what little I’ve seen she seems to be the nicest one and the most sensible one on the show. But I digress. Another black lady- very aggressive, very loud, etc. came on and there was a dispute between her and one of the white women. Well the black woman wanted to get into a physical fight over it. And before that she yelled at the other black woman. And she yelled to her something to the effect- “You supposed to have my back” even though she was clearly in the wrong and being overly aggressive. This isn’t the first time I’ve seen black people make naked racial appeals to other blacks based solely on race. I’ve seen it several times in real life and they tend to do it right there in front of white people as if appealing to each other just on the basis of race is okay.
Frankly I don’t understand how it is that black people complain about racism but they think its perfectly acceptable to do things for each other or take the side of each other against a person of another race based solely on race. Can you explain that? Because if everyone goes around siding with people based solely on skin color then we are going to have an incredibly racist and segregated society in every facet of our lives.

I don’t call this out because in my view its factually accurate EXCEPT for one thing. I would have replaced the word “white” candidate with liberal or Democratic candidate.
Doom
That’s the thing. If one thing is wrong, the entire statement is wrong. Had he not used the word “White”, then he may have had a point. However, he did not do as you said you would have done. Therefore, his statement was wrong. TO try to downplay it or excuse it is tantamount to co-signing it, IMHO.
Also, trying to conflate the argument by switching to party and or ideological affiliations give the impression that you tend to want to agree with him. It’s a simple premise. Either what he said was right or wrong. There’s no middle ground.

Award for Most Overheated Argument of Day. Also, most ironic pronouncement…”single molecule of oxygen.”
Award for Dumbass of the Day. Seems that somebody forgot that humans breathe O2 and not just O. As a matter of fact, unless you forcefully separate them, oxygen is always O2 in the normal environment. The oxygen we breath is a compound that’s made up of TWO oxygen atoms. When you combine two or more atoms, that substance becomes a molecule. Geez, he really let the stoopids out then…
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxygen
At standard temperature and pressure, two atoms of the element bind to form dioxygen, a very pale blue, odorless, tasteless diatomic gas with the formula O2. This compound is an important part of the atmosphere, and is necessary to sustain terrestrial life.
Sometimes, people should really not type out the stuff they “think” they know, especially when they don’t really know what in the hell they’re talking about. However, anybody who blogs under a name that contains the word embarassment likely has no qualms about showing of his/her ignorance at every available chance.

Where did I state anything that specifically pointed to Republicans, Conservatives, or any political leanings at all?
I’ll even help you out. Here’s my entire post which you obviously allowed the voices in your head to interpret for you instead of actually reading what I wrote.
Why does one have to repost such utter bullcrap, especially when it’s so friggin’ wrong? Well, you’re right, they didn’t last a single day, they served their entire terms.

Regarding his statement I don’t agree with it. As I said I would have used “liberal or Dem” instead of white. So I do disagree with the premise of his statement. No.
But while I disagree with his statement I don’t think its crazy out of line or even racist and I’ll tell you why. I want you to ask yourself this just to toy with his statement for a moment or 2. If John McCain or Mitt Romney had sat in a pew for 20 years listening to a hate spewing preacher who commonly invoked racial animosity do you honestly think that man would have made it as high as garnering a party nomination? When it comes to provocative racial comments there really is no question that a white candidate- at least an R white candidate, is held to a substantially higher standard then say a black Democrat. And I don’t think that’s really debatable.

One way and one way only.
Heal ourselves first.
We don’t have a problem with the “government” or the “schools” or whatever.
We have a huge problem with ourselves. Self-centered, shallow and unempowered. Willfully!
As individuals we can do a LOT better and we can damn well stop blaming everybody and everything else.
If this country sucks, (and it doesn’t!) it is because of you and me. Period.
THAT is personal responsibility.
And if I had the money I would greatly refine that basic message and travel the country with it.
I would point at all of the people in the crowd and tell them that the problem in America is with you and you and you and…………………………….. me.

That’s all I was asking. Your extended explanation gave the impression that you were trying to validate his point. If that’s not what you were doing, then my apologies for insinuating as such. That was just the impression that I got.
If John McCain or Mitt Romney had sat in a pew for 20 years listening to a hate spewing preacher who commonly invoked racial animosity do you honestly think that man would have made it as high as garnering a party nomination?
Yeah. Honestly, given the fact that we haven’t heard anything relating to what either candidate has listened to in church, we don’t exactly know what kind of message they have listened to, do we? We can only go off of assumptions.
Bringing the Wright sermon up as a point opens you up to quite a few faults you’d have to defend with that argument too.
#1 Can anybody prove that Obama was there for every sermon, every week for those 20 years?
#2 Did Rev. Wright preach that same sermon or that same general topic/meme each week for 20 years?
#3 If #2 is yes, then why have we not heard numerous other sermons instead of that one line of one sermon being repeatedly looped?
I could keep going, but I don’t wanna tire you out. I understand your point about Rev. Wright. However, if you take an isolated line from a single sermon, can that accurately and truthfully be articulated as the message that was heard for 20 years?

I don’t want to wear you out with the Reverand Wright stuff either cause frankly I get tired of hearing the shyte. But O acknowledged that he had a 20 year relationship with Wright and his church. The man married him, O had said he was mentored by the man, and unless I’m mistaken I think he was godfather to their children. From his own account O had a close relationship with the man and if memory serves correct I think he had also referred to him as a father figure. Anyway, I just believe in the old Chinese proverb that if you lie down with dogs you wake up with fleas. I just don’t like my president to be associated with fairly radical elements. But enough. I have a 20 year relationship with my friend who was my best man at my wedding. That doesn’t mean that I’ve been attached to his hip for 20 years, nor does it mean that we believe the same things. We are as close as blood brothers, but we are still our own individual persons.
You’re inferring far more into relationships than what has been expressed and/or proven. Jumping to conclusions can sometimes lead to right answers, but that can also lead to very ugly mistruths. I simply choose to deal with proven fact instead of inferences and innuendo, but that’s just me.

As an American, you should also know that people have the freedom to practice their religion or lack thereof without fear or reprecussion. Contrary to your opinion, nobody’s trying to tell Christians what they have to do. Instead, people are trying to tell Christians that, in America, YOU can’t dictate what others do.
I go to work daily to ensure that people have the freedom to continue to do that, as well as ensuring you have the right to express your religion without persecution. Expressing your religion does not mean you get to force your beliefs on others.

At times I must agree………….
That book was filled with so many holes. Anyone can go to youbtube and watch him side step and stutter when he was doing interviews when the book came out.
If the book is a crock, why the hell do I want to spend money to go see the movie which it is based off of?
That would be like me saying, you want to know about Bush, go watch Fahrenheit 9/11. That would be a joke, just like that fauxumentary, 2016

My family is deep in the church. I know true righteousness when I see it. I also know false prophesy and such when I see it. For his sake, I hope he straightens his spirit out before his judgement day.

Grew up in the church, but not a religious man. Of courseone only gets a degree of any individual’s persona on a blog, but I can truly say I haven’t come across many that will bring the Bible in one hand and selective condemnation that always suits his needs in the other…….. to the extent it is displayed here.

Last night, he tried to test my knowledge of the history of my people in this country as though I wouldn’t know it. I just like to throw stuff back in his face. As a member of the Secret Service, he knows that anybody who even sniffs classified documents have to clear security clearances. He likes to brag about his different jobs, but I’ve known Marines, Secret Service Agents, Air Marshals, and all. He can pull that bluster with uninformed people, but not me.

I’m with you. When called out for selective condemnation and hypocrisy, you have never seen a better two step and semantics game than is displayed on this blog.
He would have been the man in TX………….. That two step is deadly.
From last night, I read it. He has posted that thing about the black slave owner 10 if not 1 million times as if that justifies the slavery or the racism that took place even from people who didn’t own slaves.
Granted not all people were or are racism, but deflection, lies and semantics to downplay or justify speaks directly to the character of the individual…………………. And I don’t give a damn if they single handily won an entire war.

I’m with you there. Most times, I ignore posts like that, but for some reason, I’m in the mood to bash people over the head with the truth. I guess I’m finally tired of all the lying that’s been going on during this campaign. I can’t see how people can live with themselves acting as we witness here and other places. As a man, I couldn’t live with myself if I exhibited the character of some of the people here.

Amen to that. But I have to say, what else can you expect when it is the head of the “clan” who is leading the way with constantly repeated lies. It’s not the lie that is the problem, it’s the saying it over and over when you KNOW he knows he’s lying.

I didn’t read everything last night and this morning. I’ve been in that boat before though. I look at it as we’re all human and subject to act that way. I’ll give people benefit of the doubt for a while before forming an opinion of them. I try not to hold things against people for long periods of time either, unless it’s something I consider seriously offensive. If I lose respect for people though, I seldom engage them at all here after that happens.

Add one more thing, I don’t even think the individual actually believes that the issue is one sided and it fully aware of the facts and history.
The need to be contrary to Jay and the left leaning bloggers drove the doubling, tripling and quadrupling down to deflect from what Lindsey Graham had said about “angry white males”.
We all have our days and moments, just shocked me a little that this individual would just keep it going and going, with numerous bloggers and you were one of them.

I think that’s the one that pushed me over the edge as well. I find it funny as the more I try to look at the GOP as a viable party, the more they turn me off. I’ve seen other opinion writers discuss the idea that the Romney campaign is going to bring changes to future campaigns in how they push lies with no reputable media calling their bluff or pointing out the lies.

be careful when liberals attempt to downplay the cost of their cherished gov’t charity. when they discuss miniscule % of GDP; as opposed to the increased cost per tax payer. You will also see liberals animated by statistics in aggregate; this way spending huge amounts of cash to improve a problem in . 0001 of a way seems logical to them.

The bottom 43% of Americans, related to their class status, will not be able to move upward, out of their inherited class status. Likewise, the top 40% of Americans, related to their class status, will not fall below their inherited class status. Moreover, this has been true for the last TWO DECADES, at least, in America.
In other words, class mobilitiy is coming to an end in America. This lack of upward mobility is same situation that existed in Great Britain and Europe when America’s founders fled their situation of lack of upper mobility there – more than three centuries ago.
I just heard this data from Chris Hayes on his Saturday show, “Up.” Moreover, Hayes said that President Obama did not create this situation in his 3 short years as U. S. President, in spite of the falsehoods that Republicans are trying to communicate about his administration’s policies related to this lack of upward mobility. Watch out for Republican duplicity – it seems that Republicans have become committed to perpetuating duplicity and deceit in order to fool the public, to gain power through appealing to the public’s biases. Don’t be fooled. Protect American upward mobility and egalitarianism – those values on which this nation was formed. When Republicans talked about their families’ rise from poverty to wealth at the Republican Convention, they were usually talking about their ancestors’ upward mobility, not their own, in that they had been born into wealth – the recipients of this past upward mobility, themselves – not the creators of it for future generations of Americans, according to Hayes’ observation.
Vote the Democratic ticket in November. Be aware.
