Gov. Deal chooses party loyalty over Ga. citizenry

Gov. Nathan Deal faced a choice. He could choose to be loyal to his party’s political ideology, or he could choose to be loyal to some 650,000 of his fellow Georgians in need of health insurance.

He has chosen loyalty to party, declining to let Georgia participate in the expansion of Medicaid coverage offered through Obamacare. The result will be unnecessary illness, unnecessary pain and yes, unnecessary death. That may sound harsh, but it is also stark reality: When you deny health -care coverage to hundreds of thousands of people, as Deal has decided to do, those outcomes are inevitable.

There will be other consequences as well. The decision blocks an influx of billions and billions of federal health -care dollars — an estimated $14.5 billion between 2014 and 2019 alone — that would provoke significant job growth. Georgia taxpayers will be paying to fund that expanded coverage in other states, most of which will take it eagerly, but their governor has decided that they’ll get none of the benefits.

Turning that money away will also raise the risk of closure by rural hospitals, which are already struggling under the financial burden of providing so much care to the uninsured. (Last year, Georgia hospitals lost an estimated $1.5 billion caring for people without insurance, and rural residents are more likely to be uninsured than their urban and suburban counterparts.)

Medicaid expansion would have been a lifesaver to those hospitals and to the doctors who practice there, but that lifesaver has now been yanked away. That will have significant economic-development implications for Georgia beyond the immediate loss of federal dollars. The availability of modern health -care facilities is a prime consideration for any business or industry looking to relocate. As rural hospitals close and doctors leave, employers will leave as well, taking with them the last hope of prosperity for many small communities.

In announcing his decision at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Deal cited the potential cost to Georgia taxpayers, which his administration estimates at $4.5 billion over a 10-year period. However, independent cost estimates put the state’s share of expansion much lower. The Kaiser Family Foundation estimates it at $714 million for the first five years of the program, or roughly 0.17 percent of state GDP. The Urban Institute puts it at $716 million for the first six years.

However, as Tim Sweeney of the Georgia Budget and Policy Institute points out, even the governor’s figure of $4.5 billion “would represent only a 1.9 percent increase in total state spending.”

In assessing the costs, you also have to look at two other things: How great is the need for expanded health coverage in Georgia, and how much does the state already spend? Are we already spending as much if not more than other states?

Hardly. Georgia is 47th in state health spending per capita. It is 49th in the amount it spends per Medicaid patient. Twenty percent of our citizens are uninsured, the fifth-highest uninsured rate in the nation, and we stand at 39th in life expectancy. Yet according to the governor, we can’t afford to address any of those issues, even if it means a stronger state economy and better health care and longer lives for hundreds of thousands of Georgians.

We can, however, afford hundreds of millions of dollars to build a new Falcons stadium, not to mention billions of dollars in tax breaks to businesses. Priorities, you know.

Obama: “The Affirmative Action President”

“Years from now, historians may regard the 2008 election of Barack Obama as an inscrutable and disturbing phenomenon, a baffling breed of mass hysteria akin perhaps to the witch craze of the Middle Ages. How, they will wonder, did a man so devoid of professional accomplishment beguile so many into thinking he could manage the world’s largest economy, direct the world’s most powerful military, execute the world’s most consequential job?

Imagine a future historian examining Obama’s pre-presidential life: ushered into and through the Ivy League despite unremarkable grades and test scores along the way; a cushy non-job as a “community organizer”; a brief career as a state legislator devoid of legislative achievement (and in fact nearly devoid of his attention, so often did he vote “present”); and finally an unaccomplished single term in United States Senate, the entirety of which was devoted to his presidential ambitions. He left no academic legacy in academia, authored no signature legislation as legislator.

And then there is the matter of his troubling associations: the white-hating, America-loathing preacher who for decades served as Obama’s “spiritual mentor”; a real-life, actual terrorist who served as Obama’s colleague and political sponsor. It is easy to imagine a future historian looking at it all and asking: how on Earth was such a man elected president?

Not content to wait for history, the incomparable Norman Podhoretz addressed the question recently in the Wall Street Journal:

To be sure, no white candidate who had close associations with an outspoken hater of America like Jeremiah Wright and an unrepentant terrorist like Bill Ayers would have lasted a single day. But because Mr. Obama was black, and therefore entitled in the eyes of liberaldom to have hung out with protesters against various American injustices, even if they were a bit extreme, he was given a pass.”

Fred,

I may have to talk to my accountant cause I still can’t figure out for the life of me how you only pay 9%. Your wife’s income is ordinary income so again that puts you at or near the top marginal tax bracket. The math still doesn’t make any sense as to how you could have enough tax losses through your company to offset your wife’s earnings and reduce your rate all the way down to 9%. You using Mitt’s accountant?

Thulsa: I don’t know lol. I’m an S-corp so the company losses are deducted from our joint tax return. my accountant does my company and then our personal return and we sign it and wait for the money to come back. I never really checked for percentage before this year, just looked at how much we were paying. But when I looked at the figure this year I was like WHAT? That can’t be right. That’s less than 10 percent. But it was right. Now my wife is back in school for her doctorate and I think we can deduct THAT money and I’m going to go back to school in January and I know we can deduct that money as it will be “training” for my new Computer Company.

I wouldn’t be surprised (if they keep the taxes like they are now) if we end up paying less than 5% on gross income next year. Maybe even 0% depending on the start up costs of the computer business. I haven’t decided which route to take.

Yes and no. Got a close personal friend that was doing real well and then his business went south. He got foreclosed on his $2 million dollar house, sold his ferrari at a huge loss, had a porsche that he sold at a big loss also. Basically he lost everything but like a fool he was living beyond his means. And then I do business with another man whose uncle lives in a double wide trailer. The uncle has over 2 million dollars but he is happy in his trailer. He bought it when he was just starting out and just never wanted to move. I’ve seen a few people in million dollar homes get evicted. Happens all the time. And lately it seems like there is always some athlete or big time entertainer declaring bankruptcy or getting foreclosed on. Its remarkable.

Anyway, I was asking because I’m not quite there yet but at the rate that I’m going I will be in that high bracket where I’ve got to get my taxes substantially reduced. No mortgage though, no car payments, cash in the bank with no debt owed so in that regards I’m fine but I don’t have the 7 figures yet. Not even close.

Trouble in Paradise:

Washington Post:

“Just days before a congressional deadline, the Obama administration is deeply divided over whether to designate the Pakistan-based Haqqani network as a terrorist group, with some officials worried that doing so could complicate efforts to restart peace talks with the Taliban and undermine already-fraught relations with Pakistan.

Early this month, Congress gave Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton 30 days to determine whether the Haqqani group, considered the most lethal opponent of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, meets the criteria for designation — a foreign organization engaging in terrorist activity that threatens U.S. citizens or national security.”

What I’m saying is there is no one cause.

I think it was Doggone/Ga that brought up her consumption of a certain soft drink. When it was manufactured using HFCS she craved it almost as an addict. I believe she said she switched to a non HFCS based soft drink and her consumption decreased.

So yes, manufacturers have a vested interest to use HFCS especially if it encourages consumers to ingest more of it.

After it emerged that Obama was still taking time to fit in a campaign stop in Cleveland, Ohio before checking out how clean-up operations are proceeding in the Bayou state, the Obama campaign abruptly cancelled that event.

‘In light of the President’s travel to Louisiana to meet with local officials and view ongoing response and recovery efforts to Hurricane Isaac, President Obama will no longer travel to Cleveland, Ohio on Monday, September 3,’ the campaign said in a terse statement.

Romney had changed his schedule to head to an affected town outside New Orleans while Obama, who has yet to visit the Tropical Storm Isaac zone, headed off to Texas to campaign.”

You’re right of course about the associations. What we got in Romney was actually a hyper-decent human being, despite the fact that most of us conservatives wanted something else.

The pendulum does not swing both ways however, because Democrat nominee’s stories don’t have to be told at convention. They are carried for free by the media, in glowing analyses and ubiquitous puff pieces.

I noticed criticism last night on CNN, wherein Anderson Cooper (would he have gerbils JamVet?) criticized Romney for not telling his story. For being either too proud or too humble, (or both) Republicans may be criticized openly. For Democrats to be criticized they need to be…..well, we’re still waiting for CNN to criticize the President for something substantial.

Remember, the open advocacy of the liberal press began 30 years ago with Reagan. Succeeding Jimmy Carter, Reagan was the apparent creator of a heretofore unreported enormous homeless problem.

Today’s Arguing with Idiots Post from JamVet:

My gawd, all you KKKonservatives do is talk about black people!

How lazy they are, how entitled they are, how they are too stupid to join your Lily White Party. How they will nevr leave the plantation. How they live for Food Stamps. And on and on and on and on and on.

In some ways, it is hard to fault you, I suppose.

You never fell far from your deeply racist, arch-conservative, southern Baptist roots that your parents and families came from. (Don’t shoot the messenger.)

Wow, speaking of embarrassments, embarrassment, I just watched Clint’s “speech”.

What a train wreck.

His legacy now will forever be tied to that bizarre, semi-lucid and somewhat vulgar performance.

Talk about vulgarity! –and straw men.

Good luck.

Normal Free. I just want our elected President, who took an oath, to obey and enforce the laws on the books. This president is suing states trying to protect it’s citizens, while not enforcing the laws. No spin here. Just facts.

Fred,

You getting off cheap. A friend that was in the same business as the one that got foreclosed on closed down his business before things turned and got out completely. He made millions before he quit though. The accountant he introduced me to charges reasonably for pikers like myself. But my buddy had paid him 20k in accounting fees to keep him legal and reduce his burden. And leave some money on the table. I leave plenty on the table. I could legally write off crazy amounts of mileage but my accountant told me he won’t do it because it raises a red flag. Its just not worth it even though I’m legally entitled to it. Like you and him I also have a Subchapter S.

BTW, watch that semi-lucid performance of Eastwood’s.

When they pan the crowd, you will notice something very, very obvious.

Out of the hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of people there, you will not see ONE black face.

Seriously. Maybe you cons can point one out to me.

Maybe they were in the kitchen? Or maybe in the very last row? I couldn’t tell.

Now, granted that was also the exact same case in 2008 and 2004 and 2000 and 1996 and 1992 and 1988 and 1984 and 1980 and….

You get the idea…

Better join us in the real world. There has never been, and never will be, a time when EVERY law is enforced 100%. Never. There are always going to be people in the loop with the ability to make a judgement call on when to enforce something and when it’s not worth the effort, time and money.

Unless, of course, you’re willing ot pay a HELL of a lot more in taxes to hire the people to DO the investigating and the court appearences.

Not intended to be a factual statement…. The conned just don’t seem to understand that if its not true, its not a “fact”.

Seems to be lost on the GOP…. of course, look at Eastwood. “We don’t need lawyers in the WH”…. Anyone know what year Mitt got his law degree from the same school that Obama went to?

Carvel’s polling out today. It ain’t good for Barry. Now, polls on here to these loons only matter when their man looks good. The bad news is it’s still a electoral college event and that is in the Kings favor, but closing. Too many things have to line up for Mitt to unseat this guy. The polls are not good for Barry though. Can’t answer the state by state polling. It’s been a steady decline for Barry since Ryan came on……..But they will show you a MSNBC poll in a minute showing Barry up by 15……………………………………9,8,7,6………..any second now

Well, of course he does, that is a given. the 99% can disappear under bridges or cardboard boxes, fend for ourselves, die on the streets, go hungry, without access to ANY type of medical assistance. Just so long at the top 1% can continue taking more & more. but this is what the people voted for, or some of them, not all of us are that blinded by hatred. what i can’t understand is why people repeatedly vote against their own best interests.

JamVet,

Did you know that it was the black vote that helped put George Wallace back into office in 1982? Its an interesting footnote in history but he got over a third of the black vote to regain the governorship.

“To be sure, no white candidate who had close associations with an outspoken hater of America like Jeremiah Wright and an unrepentant terrorist like Bill Ayers would have lasted a single day.”

Why does one have to repost such utter bullcrap, especially when it’s so friggin’ wrong? Well, you’re right, they didn’t last a single day, they served their entire terms.

Why not talk about previous president with ties to the KKK? Is it because they were White and they had close associations with people that only hated N******S and not America as a whole? I’m so tired of hearing this bigoted crap. I’ll be glad when none of you bigots are able to use a single molecule of oxygen. Maybe this country will start to heal then.

Romney will win only if those most wealthy can find a way – any way – to steal the election. Maybe it is through illegal “laws” (see Ohio), maybe it is through spending so much money on TV commercials to brain wash people (see how much the republicans have raised), or whatever.

Thinking middle class Americans are sick of the republican tricks, lies, and twisting of truth.

You can lose the weight and you will feel terrific but….there’s no getting around it, sacrifice you must and be patient. No more junk snacks, no more pizza, no more fatty cakes, no more chocolate. Exercise is the key and you need to get into it, addicted to it, get high on it. In 90 days you will look like a completely new human being and a funny thing will happen, when you decide to have one of those junk snacks you more than likely will spit it out because the taste just isn’t the same – good luck!

Howver, we know that stores sell Depends™ by the box, so there’s obviously a market for diaper-wearing adults.
