Gov. Deal chooses party loyalty over Ga. citizenry

Gov. Nathan Deal faced a choice. He could choose to be loyal to his party’s political ideology, or he could choose to be loyal to some 650,000 of his fellow Georgians in need of health insurance.

He has chosen loyalty to party, declining to let Georgia participate in the expansion of Medicaid coverage offered through Obamacare. The result will be unnecessary illness, unnecessary pain and yes, unnecessary death. That may sound harsh, but it is also stark reality: When you deny health -care coverage to hundreds of thousands of people, as Deal has decided to do, those outcomes are inevitable.

There will be other consequences as well. The decision blocks an influx of billions and billions of federal health -care dollars — an estimated $14.5 billion between 2014 and 2019 alone — that would provoke significant job growth. Georgia taxpayers will be paying to fund that expanded coverage in other states, most of which will take it eagerly, but their governor has decided that they’ll get none of the benefits.

Turning that money away will also raise the risk of closure by rural hospitals, which are already struggling under the financial burden of providing so much care to the uninsured. (Last year, Georgia hospitals lost an estimated $1.5 billion caring for people without insurance, and rural residents are more likely to be uninsured than their urban and suburban counterparts.)

Medicaid expansion would have been a lifesaver to those hospitals and to the doctors who practice there, but that lifesaver has now been yanked away. That will have significant economic-development implications for Georgia beyond the immediate loss of federal dollars. The availability of modern health -care facilities is a prime consideration for any business or industry looking to relocate. As rural hospitals close and doctors leave, employers will leave as well, taking with them the last hope of prosperity for many small communities.

In announcing his decision at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Deal cited the potential cost to Georgia taxpayers, which his administration estimates at $4.5 billion over a 10-year period. However, independent cost estimates put the state’s share of expansion much lower. The Kaiser Family Foundation estimates it at $714 million for the first five years of the program, or roughly 0.17 percent of state GDP. The Urban Institute puts it at $716 million for the first six years.

However, as Tim Sweeney of the Georgia Budget and Policy Institute points out, even the governor’s figure of $4.5 billion “would represent only a 1.9 percent increase in total state spending.”

In assessing the costs, you also have to look at two other things: How great is the need for expanded health coverage in Georgia, and how much does the state already spend? Are we already spending as much if not more than other states?

Hardly. Georgia is 47th in state health spending per capita. It is 49th in the amount it spends per Medicaid patient. Twenty percent of our citizens are uninsured, the fifth-highest uninsured rate in the nation, and we stand at 39th in life expectancy. Yet according to the governor, we can’t afford to address any of those issues, even if it means a stronger state economy and better health care and longer lives for hundreds of thousands of Georgians.

We can, however, afford hundreds of millions of dollars to build a new Falcons stadium, not to mention billions of dollars in tax breaks to businesses. Priorities, you know.

People that berate an 82 yr old man are wussies as far as I am concerned.

But people who berate a young woman like Sandra Fluke are brave and honorable?

Despite the drama queen reactions (including the usually drama queen reaction from the queen PA), I have seen no one berating Eastwood personally. They are critiquing his bizzare presentation. But would it make you feel better if we just called him names about being promicuous or something similar.

Isn’t that exactly what you tools whining about Romney’s 13% tax rate are expecting?  Blaming him for only paying 13% as if it was him who wrote the tax code.  Let me tell you all something liberals, Obama paid the exact same tax rate Romney did on the same classifications of income and this BS about Obama or somebody’s secretary paying more in taxes is a LIE.  If you’re too stupid to get that, you are exactly the person the lie is intended to persuade.

Anyone who is fiscally conservative and socially moderate/liberal may actually enjoy this video. It says what most of us in the center have wanted to say at one point or another in the last few years. Pretty sure I’ll be blasted by someone, if not all of you – but I’m sure at least most of you will agree with one point or another. It may be fiction, but again, it says something a lot of moderates have been thinking for quite some time. http://youtu.be/yGAvwSp86hY

It is not the government it is the people who live in this state. How can you tell me this is the best government we can elect from this state? We have law firms, professors, doctors and accountants that in a blind dart contest could do better than these people but this is who we elect. We get what we deserve. For a small part of my life the city had more qualified mayors than the state had governors. The city got major league sports, airports and … Now both are out for themselves. We allowed it, look at the percent of voters who show up to every election, and most of them are doing no research just voting like it was a bodily function. This generation has destroy the church, marriage, the American family, the earth and a country by being selfish, fat and dumb. I mean what SHOULD I call someone whois too stupid to know what I think about Romney’s 13% ytax rate? i mean i am on record here MANY TIMES laughing about my own 9% tax rate that I paid last year. I love it home boy. Keep voting me tax cuts and I should be able to get it down to 0%. Or better yet, i can get a check from some hard working middle class worker who makes 1/4 or our household income to help defray the 20 grand I year I pay for private school for my elementary school aged daughter.

Keep voting Republican, I WANT more money to go out to Bones. I LOVE going to concerts and such. We have AWESOME healthcare so I don’t care that Nathan screwed 650,000 fellow Georgians. It doesn’t effect me one bit. Your Republican caused economy crash means my house value went WAY down. As a result my property taxes dropped like a rock. Thanks.

The crappy economy also meant the interest rates went way down as well. I was able to get a loan on my house at 2.75% for ten years which I promptly bought stock with since the stock market was down as well. It’s climbed up and I’ve made a bundle.

I’m LOVING not having to pay the same tax rate as the middle class. But I’m not going to sit here and say it’s RIGHT, because it’s not. It’s a damn travesty.

But I’m gonna suck it up while I can. Because one day, even brain washed right wing fanatics like you are going to get tired of footing the bill for my awesome lifestyle. And I’m not even filthy rich, I’m not even a 1% yet, although if I got a job at McDonald’s the extra income would push us into the one percent. Please, keep telling me how awful I have it and how terrible it is for me to pay 9% in income tax. Oh and grab me another beer while you are up please. And a big congratulations to the feds. The improved flood control system worked. This $14 billion project worked and We Built That! We probably saved a big part of the cost during this one storm.
Regarding Deal, he will handle this the same way the pubs handled the unemployment insurance fund. They gave tax breaks and depleted the fund during good times. Then, when the economy went south they borrowed money from the feds. I’m sure Deal thinks he can go to the feds, when the health care crisis hits Georgia.
If the US was serious about bringing down the cost of healthcare, we would put a big tax on the sweeteners that are making us obese, just like we tax tobacco. We would also require no fault insurance for gun owners, so the taxpayers do not have to pay for the treatment of uninsured victims of gun violence. Also, if the government decides that a fetus is entitled to the rights of personhood, then the government has an obligation to see that the fetus has access to prenatal care.

Last month, President Obama’s reelection campaign filed a lawsuit claiming that a recently enacted Ohio law eliminating early voting in the three days before an election, except for members of the military, violates the Constitution’s guarantee that all voters enjoy equal access to the franchise. The campaign’s lawsuit called for the right of all voters to cast an early ballot be restored in Ohio — it explicitly stated that expanding the franchise, not taking early voting away from military personnel as well, was the appropriate outcome.

In an opinion by Judge Peter Economus, a federal court agreed with the Obama campaign on Friday that the Ohio anti-voter law must be suspended:

“A citizen has a constitutionally protected right to participate in elections on an equal basis with other citizens in the jurisdiction.” In Ohio, that right to participate equally has been abridged by Ohio Revised Code ‘ 3509.03 and the Ohio Secretary of State’s further interpretation of that statute with regard to in-person early voting. In 2005, Ohio expanded participation in absentee balloting and in-person early voting to include all registered Ohio voters. Now, “in-person early voting” has been redefined by the Ohio legislature to limit Plaintiffs’ access to the polls. This Court must determine whether preliminary injunctive relief should be granted to Plaintiffs on their claim that Ohio’s restriction of in-person early voting deprives them of their fundamental right to vote. Following Supreme Court precedent, this Court concludes that Plaintiffs have stated a constitutional claim that is likely to succeed on the merits. As a result—and as explained below—this Court grants Plaintiffs’ motion for preliminary injunction.

Amusingly, the court’s opinion relies on the Supreme Court’s infamous decision in Bush v. Gore to reach this holding, citing Bush‘s statement that “[h]aving once granted the right to vote on equal terms, the State may not, by later arbitrary and disparate treatment, value one person’s vote over that of another.”

Fred,

How the hell do you only pay a 9% tax rate. You’ve stated on here several times that you draw $19,500 a month in retirement income which is taxed at ordinary income tax rates. You would be in the top rate. So how did you pay only 9%. In order to do that you would have to have capital gains taxes and losses in extraordinary amounts to offset that income to get down to an average of 9%. Mitt Romney has 200 million and after accounting for capital gains losses against capital gains he still could only get his rate down to 13% the last couple of years.

You really aren’t that bright, Fred. I’m glad you’re enjoying flaunting your wealth and financial prowess on a blog (where everybody believes you’re being honest about that……), but your defense of your positions is that of a high school aged kid who thinks they’re getting something over on their parents who know better.

Ah but son, I’ve met several people FROM this blog and they know I’m telling the truth lol. Your belief of lack thereof does not alter the truth. See, I’m not a Republican nor a right wing talk show host nor a Baptist. I don’t lie. My “stories” can be verified by real people on these blogs.I would be very surprised if Jay doesn’t know who I am lol.

Your main problem (other than a lack of grey matter) is that in your tiny little mind anyone who doesn’t walk lockstep with your whacked out far right wing fanatical narrow view is a “librul” or a “left wing pinko commie socialist DEMONCRAT. But reality isn’t that cut and dried son. YOU are on the lunatic fringe of the far right. Others here are on the luntic fringe of the far left. Many others are more moderate yet still are democrats or republicans. Others of us are independents. You far out lunatic fringe fanatics though look at everyone not in lock step with you as “the enemy.” And since your views are non supportable without lying you lie. Since you lie you accuse others of that lack of moral character. It helps you feel better about yourself for being a liar.

I understand. I feel for you, but I can’t reach you. Only YOU can free your mind from the stupidity to which you have chained it. You should try sometime, you might find you like it. Free thought is a neat thing, really, you don’t have to be afraid of it.

GREAT NEWS FOR DEMOCRACY!!!

Federal Judge Restores Early Voting In Ohio After Obama Suit

A federal judge in Ohio on Friday restored early voting rights in the three days before the election, ruling in favor of the Obama campaign.

U.S. District judge Peter C. Economus ruled that “restoring in-person early voting to all Ohio voters through the Monday before Election Day does not deprive UOCAVA voters from early voting.”

“Instead, and more importantly, it places all Ohio voters on equal standing,” Economus ruled. He said the state “fails to articulate a precise, compelling interest in establishing the 6 p.m. Friday deadline as applied to non-UOCAVA voters and has failed to evidence any commitment to the ‘exception’ it rhetorically extended to UOCAVA voters.”

The Romney campaign had falsely accused Obama of trying to curtail military voting when the suit simply sought to force the state to make early voting available to all Ohio voters.

“Danny X do loves his blame Bush card he do. So Danny is W still president???”

No, but Republican denial and lack of taking responsibility for the situation do nothing to help their cause. Repeating the insane mantra that bringing up Bush is taboo does not work with me. Nor does the new Republican mantra of “trust us” without any details.

Republicans can run from Bush all they want, I hope Democrats mention his name 100,000 times at their convention next week, reminding people of the disaster he left behind and the current Republican fools who have no idea how to fix the mess. Making sure Obama is a one term president is not a strategy to fix things. I said right here on the ajc blogs 4 years ago that whoever won the election would have a hard time being re-elected because thing were so messed up and a quick fix was impossible.

Twenty percent of our [Georgia] citizens are uninsured… -Bookman

Depending on the statistical source (CDC, USA Today, etc) anywhere from one-third to forty percent of Americans are obese. ONE-THIRD TO FORTY PERCENT. If you were serious about the health of Americans, Mr. Bookman, you’d ask them why they CHOOSE to be obese. That particular personal CHOICE subjects them to chronic and expensive to treat medical issues like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension and all the related problems that go along with them. Diseases that could be prevented by simply maintaining a healthy body weight. These are the diseases of choice and tremendous health care costs that could be avoided.

But then, you’re not interested in the health of Americans, Bookman, you’re just interested in controlling one-sixth of the American economy so Dem politicians can funnel these resources to their political cronies like the unions. Health care costs go up just like state university tuition and related operating costs and no end in site.

Gov. Deal knows when to say, no.

The gop lie about everything is a good way to determine that our President is doing a great job after a collapse.

They expected a booming economy after a collapse because they bought the hype on our President.

Steady job growth without going back to a recession like the eu austerity is the best economy you will get after a collapse.

Economists predict 12 million more jobs unless congress screws it up.

Nope I never said that. I said at least $19,500 was paid to us monthly (that’s the guaranteed part my wife has a GREAT job lol). I’m not retired lol, I’m “resting.” I still have my company which draws a lot of tax breaks even though I do as little business as I can. (I’m in the process of changing fields, when I get everything finished I’ll be re branded as a Computer Company). I’m not yet 50 so I can’t draw retirement income.

There is a way to write off some of my daughter’s school I think but I’m still researching it. Even so my accountant leaves money on the table every year. He told me years ago, “I can cut it to the bone but you WILL get audited at some point if I do.” So we leave some on the table so as not to endure the hassle of an audit. If you keep getting red flagged year after year they’ll finally make something up if they have to to nail you.

But nope, I’m not retired. Not even an AARP guy yet.

If you were serious about the health of Americans, Mr. Bookman, you’d ask them why they CHOOSE to be obese. That particular personal CHOICE subjects

Oy vey. Few people I know CHOOSE to be obese. Many have had bad eating habits from their parents, low priced food (as a result of USDA funding choices) are high calorie, and there are new studies that show that certain food products/chemicals and BPA containers may actually be in part or in some cases wholly responsible for encouraging fat storage. Of course, the lobbyist for those producers fight to keep their products in the marketplace without proper warning.

Perhaps instead of false blame, help to provide them real education about healthy eating, mrestaurantsants provide the calorie content of their meals on the menu so people know how much they really are getting in that portion, etc., etc.

You are right. you are BS aplenty.

Whining about people making poor choices does not fix anything. If you educate people and convince them to change their way of life, then you have a chance at keeping many of them out of the emergency rooms where they get very expensive care and ultimately increase the cost of health insurance for everyone above the cost to keep them healthy in the first place. And if the few that claim to be able to stay healthy forever and never need unaffordable healthcare do not want to pick up their tab for continuous coverage, they have options. They should feel free to exercise one of them.
