Can anybody identify that rectangular item in the upper left-hand corner of this AP photo, taken during Paul Ryan’s speech last night to the Republican National Convention?
The vice-presidential nominee seemed to be glancing at it quite a bit last night, almost as if he was reading from it. Anybody got any ideas? In fact, I believe that every single speaker at the convention with one exception — Condi Rice — has been staring at that thing during their speeches. It’s almost as if they needed somebody to tell them what to say.
I’m going to be watching Mitt Romney closely tonight, just to see if he too starts staring at that … whatever it is. Weird, huh?

The big mystery at the Democratic convention will be if anyone bothers to show up. It doesn’t really matter if they use a teleprompter or not because they don’t have anything to say. They can’t bring out their successful governors to brag about turning things around because there aren’t any success stories. The only surprise here is that Bill Clinton is not keeping a lower profile to dissociate from the Obama disaster. But hey, a check is a check in this economy. Voting for Obama twice is like backing up theTitanic and ramming the iceburg again.

Thulsa: The roads and bridges paid for a small portion of them, if any at all. Chances are most small business owners today are only paying for upkeep, and even then they are still not paying for all of the ones that lead to their business all on their own. OTHER PEOPLE are helping. So they did not “build” those roads and bridges.
Nor did they pay for their grade school and high school teachers. By ANY measure.

George Bush had an Bachelor’s from Yale, an MBA from Harvard, was Governor of Texas, and elected President of the United States TWICE. He was stupid like a fox.
Let me guess the retort: He only got where he did because of nepotism. If so, why aren’t Jimmy Carter’s kids, Ronald Reagan’s sons, and about a dozen Kennedys next in line for the White House?
Bush was a very smart man who was humble enough to act dumb. Being underestimated is a valuable secret weaon. I think he got a kick out of saying “nucular” instead of “nuclear” just to watch smarty-pants liberals’ heads explode. He knew what he was doing, and did it on purpose. The problem isn’t that a public speaker has a prompter. Speakers have always had notes or whatever to joy their memory. The problem begins when the speaker can’t do without one without either making a fool of himself because of his ignorance or without revealing his true political motives as Obama has done again and again (”You didn’t build this, the Government did!”) . Ryan has proven he can make great speeches without losing the message and making mistakes. As for Obama, Axlerod and Jarrett know that they cannot afford to have Obama speaking without total control of what the man is saying via the prompter because it would be too damaging. To that I only have to say it is too late. Obama and his two loonies (Pelosi and Reid) in Congress have already made very plain what their vision of America is and that is a citizenry totally dependent upon and totally controlled by the government. Entitlements are the avenue that liberals use to seek to control the people and in just 3.5 years under Obama far too many Americans who have just given up their self respect and dignity in return for for dependence upon the government. What Obama does not tell them is that this gravy train cannot go on forever and the time is growing really, really short when we can no longer function as a country because of our debt and that they will very soon be faced with an entitlement “Cold turkey”. And that is going to be far more painful than if they would have had leaders that would have given it to them straight up without making promises they could not possibly deliver such as Obama and the Democrats have done. Of course all Obama cares about is making another four years and after that it won’t matter to him (or Pelosi or Reid for that matter). They will have their cushy retirements with their cushy unlimited healthcare plans because they won’t have to live under Obama’s “Signature Legislation”, Obamacare. The rest of you idiot supporters of them will.

You know there’s lots and lots of lights. Lots. Really high-powered. They generate a lot of heat and make the speaker sweat, ruining the makeup. They also generate lots of…. light! In the face! In the eyes! Makes the speaker squint. Doesn’t look good. Makes’em look shifty.
That device? It’s a sunshield. Strategicallly angled so the person’s still illuminated but without the heat and the glare.

It’s not so much that Barry uses a teleprompter. It is that without it, he speaks his mind, uses his own words, and gives his game away. He is a great orator using his writer’s words, but contemporaneous speaking is not his strong suit.
The whole idea of Bookman’s column is to draw hits to the site. This is easily done by casting blood into the water. All of us rise to the bait. It is immature at best, but it works to drum up business. Much like circulation numbers used to to be used to set advertising rates, hit numbers are now used for the same purpose. My guess is Obama got an “A” in Public Speaking and an “F” in Economics.
And was able to get into Colombia and Harvard as a foreign exchange student.
Zero evidence to support either. In fact evidence actually points to Obama entering as a U.S. citizen, and that all of his grades were good enough to get him magna cum laude.

Yes, Ryan used one last night. Yes, Romney will use one tonight. No one is gonna be shocked.

So yes, his middle name does conjure unfortunate parallels for supporters.
Again, that is not my problem. I’m just using the name his momma gave him. If it is politically uncomfortable for liberals, all the better.
And for the last time, if Jon Stewart (who I watch every night) can ridicule Romney’s name, I have a clear conscience using “Hussein”. It’s just a word, right? You will see no allusion to B. Hussein Obama’s religion or birthplace in any of my posts. I’m merely using his name.

What is it with people hoping and wishing for a hurricane to hit Tampa during the RNC convention?
Hurricanes KILL people (dem and repub).
Hurricanes destroys homes and places of work.
Hurricanes shatters lives.
Have you ever survived a hurricane? I have.
Hurricanes don’t just drop into an area (say a convention hall), do damage, and then disappear.
Hurricanes leave a path of death and destruction where ever they go.
Why would anyone hope and wish that kind of hardship and heartache on their fellow Americans just because they don’t like the politics of a group holding a convention?
People who wish the death and devastation that a hurricane brings on other Americans for political “jollies” are sick.

Whatever you may think of Coulter, there is next to no one in their right mind who thinks she stupid. Because she plainly is not. She may not be right all of the time (she is not), but why don’t you take her argument on instead of dismissing it simply because she is Ann Coulter? What I said about fact checkers in general still stands – they are simply not as “factual” as we (even myself) want to think.

Towncrier: I am aware of Maddow’s criticisms of Politifact, and I have many of the same. But that’s why I read their analyses instead of relying on the rating. Here’s the bottom line on the welfare ad:
States are allowed to request a waiver of the work requirements, which will only be accepted if they submit a plan that is expected to get more people off welfare and working, to the tune of at least 20% more. The HHS sent out a letter confirming that they would accept NO plan that did not improve work requirements or included ridiculous things like “massages.”

Towncrier: Ann Coulter has a history of misusing evidence. She will make a claim, then use evidence that does not support her claim, and say that it does. Since YOU are the one asserting that the welfare ad is accurate, perhaps you would like to actually read analysis which asserts otherwise from, oh, EVERYWHERE else?
I do not sully my computer with anything from The Daily Caller anymore, not after they have been shown, repeatedly, to get things wrong. If your argument is then that other fact checkers cannot be relied upon because they sometimes get things wrong too, then you are simply creating an impasse on purpose to avoid examining the evidence that shows the welfare as is not only inaccurate, but a flat out lie.

He’d give the country back to the Indians!) She was inexperienced in the ways of the glaring limelight. She learned quickly and has been consistently one of the most gracious First Ladies, accepting the traditional role with warmth and charm. Actually, I did take one of her arguments on. She falsely claimed that everybody was quoting a single fact-checker about the welfare ads. That clearly wasn’t true.
That statement alone, a statement in a piece about others not telling the truth, illustrates (yet again) that nothing she tells us can be trusted. It’s tiring to argue with somebody who continually demonstrates that she’ll say anything to defend the indefensible.

“If your argument is then that other fact checkers cannot be relied upon because they sometimes get things wrong too…”
That was not an argument; it was a statement of fact in my opinion. In my book, purporting or claiming to tell the truth or facts and then NOT doing it then you lose all credibility. They are calling themselves “FACT CHECKERS”, for Pete’s sake. And they have been shown to be wrong many times. So they should cease and desist, imho. Coulter is making claims and arguments – she is NOT calling herself a fact checker.
“…then you are simply creating an impasse on purpose to avoid examining the evidence that shows the welfare as is not only inaccurate, but a flat out lie…”
Not so. But my problem with these so-called “fact checkers” is that I think we all want to be able to go to some authoritative source of information to determine the truth amidst all of the conflicting statements and evidence. So they were attractive to me – after all, who wants to spend hours determining the truth or falsity of every claim? But as I have discovered they, and the “evidence” they adduce, are not entirely reliable, I am put back in the same position. I no longer can trust their verdict so I refer to them only as a possible source of evidence for conducting my own investigation.
When they purport to present the facts and don’t then they are being dishonest and maybe worse.

Sorry…you (like all of us) will believe what you want to. In my epistemology there is nothing that can be absolutely known to be true. There are propositions and evidence and beyond that a choice must be made. There is always, in other words, an element of choice in what we believe.
If you want to ignore certain people or sources of information, that is your prerogative. I am not going to stop you. Listen to whom you will and believe what you will.

That statement is an obviously biased one – not much different that the ones Jay makes in his columns. I agree with you that is is a gross generalization meant to besmirch liberals (since you uses the term “herd” in the same breath). But that isn’t really the meat of her argument – it was only a put-down (which, she should really know, does not win people over). In my epistemology there is nothing that can be absolutely known to be true.
Sounds like a way to avoid facts. Is the earth round? Does it revolve around the Sun? Is there an asteroid belt? Does gravity exist and allow us to have a calculation for terminal velocity?
How do you know? If nothing is absolutely true, that in itself is an absolute statement.

You should read some Descartes, Kant, Hume and others. I am told the earth is round. People have believed otherwise. I have been shown photographs that it is round. But I had not independently verified this until I stood near the top of Mauna Kea and looked out over the ocean to indeed see that there was a curvature in the earth’s surface. My point is simply this: 99.99999% of what we “know” is from accepting the “authoritative” statements of others (which may or may not be correct).

USMC:
Speech by RADM J. Stark, USN, President of the Naval War College.
“The first reason I like Marines: They set high standards for themselves and those around them, and will accept nothing less.
I like the way Marines march.
I like the way Marines do their basic training whether it’s Quantico, San Diego, or Parris Island.
I like the idea that Marines cultivate an ethos conductive of producing hard people in a soft age.
I like the fact that Marines stay in shape.
I like the fact that the Marines only have one boss – The Commandant.
And I like the directness of the Commandant.
I like the fact that Marines are stubborn.
I like the way Marines obey orders.
I like the way Marines make the most of the press.
I like the wholehearted professionalism of the Marines.
It occurred to me that the services could be characterized by different breeds of dogs.
The Air Force reminded me of a French Poodle. The poodle always looks perfect…sometimes a bit pampered and always travels first class. But don’t ever forget that the poodle was bred as a hunting dog and in a fight it’s very dangerous.
The Army is kind of like a St. Bernard. It’s big and heavy and sometimes seems a bit clumsy. But it’s very powerful and has lots of stamina. So you want it for the long haul.
The Navy, God bless us, is a Golden Retriever. They’re good natured and great around the house. The kids love ‘em. Sometimes their hair is a bit long….they go wandering off for long periods of time, and they love water.
Marines I see as two breeds, Rottweilers or Dobermans, because Marines come in two varieties: big and mean or skinny and mean. They’re aggressive on the attack and tenacious on defense. They’ve got really short hair and they always go for the throat. That sounds like a Marine to me!
So what I really like about Marines is that first to fight isn’t just a motto, it’s a way of life.
From the day they were formed at Tun Tavern 200 plus years ago, Marines have distinguished themselves on battlefields around the world. From the fighting tops of the Bonhomme Richard, to the sands of Barbary Coast, from the swamps of New Orleans to the halls of Montezuma, from Belleau Wood, to the Argonne Forest, to Guadalcanal, and Iwo Jima, and Okinawa and Inchon, and Chosin Reservoir and Hue City and , Quang Tri and Dong Ha and Beirut, and Grenada, and Panama, and Somalia and Bosnia and (Iraq and Afghanistan) a thousand unnamed battlefields in godforsaken parts of the globe, Marines have distinguished themselves by their bravery, and stubbornness and aggressive spirit, and sacrifice, and love of country, and loyalty to one another. They’ve done it for you and me, and this country we all love so dearly.
They asked for nothing more than the honor of being a United States Marine.”

Bain Capital began looking at investing in the steel start-up in late 1993. At the time, Steel Dynamics was weighing where to locate its first plant, based in part on which region offered the best tax incentives. In June 1994, Bain put $18.2 million into Steel Dynamics, making it the largest domestic equity holder. It sold its stake five years later for $104 million, a return of more than $85 million.
As Bain made its investment, the state and county pledged $37 million in subsidies and grants for the $385-million plant project. The county also levied a new income tax to finance infrastructure improvements to benefit the steel mill over the heated objections of some county residents.
So is Mitt going to be telling us by way of this example how his company took advantage of tax subsidies in order to make his money before he then turned around and cheated us out of even paying income taxes on it. If he does, I sure hope he at least shares with us the details so all of us can enjoy making such a living off the hard work of the people that built all that.

Transfer payments are just that- transfer payments. They are not economic stimulators or promoters of economic growth. Those employee taxes such as payroll taxes go into the trust funds to help make sure that folks are not left homeless and destitute after Gordon Gekko comes through and loads down their company with debt and then takes all that money as fees and cheats the government out of its taxes to boot. Sales taxes, when collected typically go back into the state and local economies until the company is driven into banruptcy by the Mitt Gekkos or until the employees are forced out of their jobs by the Mitt Gekkos. But that wouldn’t fit your narrowitve, would it.
And can you prove where Mitt cheated us out of paying his taxes?

As for the purpose of the civil war yes. The overriding purpose was to preserve the union. But Lincoln and the GOP dominated north still get credit for ending the war. And as for abolitionists where they hell was the abolitionist movement strong? The GOP dominated north or the Dem south? Puh lease!
Plessy vs Ferguson and a few other examples? And? Don’t even try to compare life for blacks in the gop dominated North vs life for blacks in the Dem party dominated south. No need to guess. They are all using teleprompters (except Condi, the real college professor/intellectual). There was a report on PBS the first night of the convention that the speakers put their drafts on teleprompters and even an interview with Ann Romney complaining that she had never used one and preferred using just her notes. Evidently it is the regular procedure. You might ask someone who speaks at these affairs. I am sure they would not mind answering your question. Back to Condi. Apples and oranges. GE paid numerous taxes through its employees. And if you have a problem with them then perhaps you should take it up with O since Immelt and he are good buddies and he was the head of O’s jobs council. The zero taxes is that we pay for all those investments in “green energy” pipe dreams of yours. Surely you’ve heard the economics term- There is no free lunch. If you haven’t then let this count as econ lesson # 2.
“Those Bain companies that went bankrupt were of course adding to economic growth when they took all those government funds and pocketed them.”
Typical kook left thinking. In many cases the govt doesn’t “give” a business anything. They simply confiscate less of what that company earns. And the kooks then think something is being given. Secondly you must not know much about business. In business not every company makes it. Some fail. That’s just life missy. Bain capital has many success stories of companies like Target that made it big and employ tens of thousands of tax paying people and stores. But they’re not going to be able to save every company. Your fundamental misunderstandings of both business and the economy are frightening.

I don’t recall Condolezza Rice ever stating she marched in any protests during the 1960’s. She might be from the Selma Bridge generation, but if she wasn’t in the street, just living during that time doesn’t automatically make her part of the crowd.

You might want to go back and review the stats on lynching…the GOP West beat out the Dem South and GOP North alike…things getting slow? Go string up and mow down a few Indians and make sure you get the women and children…nits make lice, don’t you know…?
That shift, three years off having little to do with it, was dramatic and wholesale…Blacks had already begun to move toward the Democrats with the Al Smith campaign, the rise of the KKK up in the North in relation to the anti Catholic stance of the GOP had shown them what was in store…
And Plessy v Ferguson etc, and “comparison to the Jim Crow…” Stop and look at it, and put down the Sharia…those two decisions are what UPHELD Jim Crow…
All of what you cite…poll taxes, etc. had the seal of GOP approval…and, just pointing out a little something here that you GOPers (and no small few Democrats)citing Sharia just seem to completely overlook in your Black-White world the genocide of the American Indians, the genocide of the Native Hawaiians, the bloody repressions in the Philippines. Let’s not forget the Robber Barons, etc. etc…
Thulsa, honestly, the GOP has presided over some of the worst outrages of American domestic and foreign policy…
Now, the Democrats…don’t get me started there…but either party trying to come off as holier than thou in relation to the Gilded Age into the 1960s is an exercise in hypocrisy…

The shift came following the Flood of ‘27, Blacks voted overwhelmingly for FDR and he recognized that support by appointing the first Black (and woman, that liberal love of twofers) to the cabinet.
That was the big shift. The push actually began at the tail end of the Reconstruction period. The flood was just one of many catalysts that helped the shift progress along.

“TC, so how do YOU explain how the GOP has elected exactly four black US Senators since the first year of the Chester A. Arthur administration? Yeah, I thought so. LOL…”
I’m back for a bit. Dang, JV, you have really exposed your flank a bit with this statement. When I responded before, I didn’t have any idea how many Republican black senators there had been but just assumed you were right and that there likely had more Democratic senators. WRONG! There have been exactly 3 for both parties:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_African-American_United_States_Senators
You were probably thinking of the 3 and a half or so to 1 ratio of Representatives since Reconstruction…I don’t know since you haven’t got your facts straight to begin with. Perhaps you meant 4 Representatives since Arthur’s term began – but that wouldn’t be right either (since there have been 13).
Now, would you please answer my question about what is wrong with race-baiting liberals like you? And, while you are at it, please explain just what president Obama has done to solve our economic problems (as that is the main issue)?

Here’s how Romney would go about “liberating” a company: A private equity firm like Bain typically seeks out floundering businesses with good cash flows. It then puts down a relatively small amount of its own money and runs to a big bank like Goldman Sachs or Citigroup for the rest of the financing. (Most leveraged buyouts are financed with 60 to 90 percent borrowed cash.) The takeover firm then uses that borrowed money to buy a controlling stake in the target company, either with or without its consent. When an LBO is done without the consent of the target, it’s called a hostile takeover; such thrilling acts of corporate piracy were made legend in the Eighties, most notably the 1988 attack by notorious corporate raiders Kohlberg Kravis Roberts against RJR Nabisco, a deal memorialized in the book Barbarians at the Gate.
Romney and Bain avoided the hostile approach, preferring to secure the cooperation of their takeover targets by buying off a company’s management with lucrative bonuses. Once management is on board, the rest is just math. So if the target company is worth $500 million, Bain might put down $20 million of its own cash, then borrow $350 million from an investment bank to take over a controlling stake.
But here’s the catch. When Bain borrows all of that money from the bank, it’s the target company that ends up on the hook for all of the debt.
Now your troubled firm – let’s say you make tricycles in Alabama – has been taken over by a bunch of slick Wall Street dudes who kicked in as little as five percent as a down payment. So in addition to whatever problems you had before, Tricycle Inc. now owes Goldman or Citigroup $350 million. With all that new debt service to pay, the company’s bottom line is suddenly untenable: You almost have to start firing people immediately just to get your costs down to a manageable level.
“That interest,” says Lynn Turner, former chief accountant of the Securities and Exchange Commission, “just sucks the profit out of the company.”
WE JUST DON’T GET IT, HUH! Guess again, Mitt Gekko.

As for all the other stuff you brought in about the treatment of the Indians and all that you’re opening up a can of worms that Jamvet and I weren’t going into. We all know American presidencies of both parties have done all sorts of bad throughout history. That was not the scope of what we were talking about.
Jamvet was simply saying that in regards to blacks that the GOP had treated blacks poorly for 130 or 150 years or whatever it was. And I simply pointed out to him that prior to WW 2 or lets say 1927 that blacks had fared better and been treated better in GOP northern states than in Southern DEM states. And I don’t think too many people were argue that they weren’t.

Take a typical Bain transaction involving an Indiana-based company called American Pad and Paper. Bain bought Ampad in 1992 for just $5 million, financing the rest of the deal with borrowed cash. Within three years, Ampad was paying $60 million in annual debt payments, plus an additional $7 million in management fees. A year later, Bain led Ampad to go public, cashed out about $50 million in stock for itself and its investors, charged the firm $2 million for arranging the IPO and pocketed another $5 million in “management” fees. Ampad wound up going bankrupt, and hundreds of workers lost their jobs, but Bain and Romney weren’t crying: They’d made more than $100 million on a $5 million investment.

China’s Growing Economic Crisis
China has hit a wall. Just as in 2009, the premier is visiting key industrial cities such as Guangdong and Zhejiang. Wen is facing dour looks from manufacturers surrounded by mounting piles of unsold goods, a rare experience for the main engine of China’s economic rise.
Factory warehouses are cluttered with excess stock, store shelves are filled beyond capacity, and dealerships are choked with cars that used to speed from showroom to road. And yet Wen’s team in Beijing has been eerily silent about how it plans to revive things. That may be because the short answer is, it doesn’t.
Can it be that the absurd Worldwide neoliberal economic policies have reached their logical endpoint? Can it be that — by shipping well-paying jobs to low-wage countries — Worldwide demand has been destroyed to the extent that no recovery is on the horizon?
Let’s step back and take a look shall we? Greedy corporations can make more money by firing you and giving your job to a guy in China who will work for $200 a month. The mistake they made though is not realizing that “supply does not create its own demand.” The mistake they made is that demand, once destroyed is not easily revived.
So now we have a World where supply is king but there is no demand.

there’s absolutely no way to look at what Bain did at KB and see anything but a cash grab – one that followed the business model laid out by Romney. Rather than cutting costs and tightening belts, Bain added $300 million in debt to the firm’s bottom line while taking out more than $120 million in cash – an outright looting that creditors later described in a lawsuit as “breaking open the piggy bank.” What’s more, Bain smoothed the deal in typical fashion by giving huge bonuses to the company’s top managers as the firm headed toward bankruptcy. CEO Michael Glazer got an incredible $18.4 million, while CFO Robert Feldman received $4.8 million and senior VP Thomas Alfonsi took home $3.3 million.

Come on up, Mitt Gekko, and take a bow. You really know how to give it to the unsuspecting.
Which brings us to another aspect of Romney’s business career that has largely been hidden from voters: His personal fortune would not have been possible without the direct assistance of the U.S. government. The taxpayer-funded subsidies that Romney has received go well beyond the humdrum, backdoor, welfare-sucking that all supposedly self-made free marketeers inevitably indulge in. Not that Romney hasn’t done just fine at milking the government when it suits his purposes, the most obvious instance being the incredible $1.5 billion in aid he siphoned out of the U.S. Treasury as head of the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake – a sum greater than all federal spending for the previous seven U.S. Olympic games combined. Romney, the supposed fiscal conservative, blew through an average of $625,000 in taxpayer money per athlete – an astounding increase of 5,582 percent over the $11,000 average at the 1984 games in Los Angeles. In 1993, right as he was preparing to run for the Senate, Romney also engineered a government deal worth at least $10 million for Bain’s consulting firm, when it was teetering on the edge of bankruptcy.

As the racial demographics continue to change we are going to need people from all races and political ideologies to work through these issues in a constructive manner.
I think you are probably older than I am, so you have seen the changes good and bad.

You also don’t find it taught that many Blacks owned slaves or were Freedmen who were forced/sold into slavery after living here free for most of their lives. You also don’t find it taught that Blacks sold Blacks into slavery.

“That you have “issues” with this issue (LOL) explains why any historically, empirically accurate reference to the damning truth does not meet your approval is deemed race baiting.”
The post to which I responded was not an instance of race-baiting. It is all of the other inflamatory posts you have made over the months I have been here. The primary reason there are so few black Republican Representatives is because there are so few black Republicans! The reasons blacks have flocked from one party to another is still a question to be answered in my mind. Brosephus has tried to explain it as some kind of Pavlovian conditioning, but I don’t think that is a good explanation in and of itself. I have a hard time believing blacks are that unthinking in today’s information age. I think it has a lot to do with perceptions and that perhaps explains why so many liberals seem desperate to paint conservatives as racist because they feel it is the only way to keep blacks in the fold. I have said a number of times that I would have voted for Obama had he been less liberal just because he was “black” (or perceived that way – he is mulatto). And I would have liked Rice to run as VP in 2008 or this time.

“Where is it written that lynching must have a Black victim?”
josef,
It doesn’t. As a matter of fact I’ve told some of our black friends on here that many whites were also lynched. I’ve mentioned this several times because some of our black guests seem to think all lynching victims were black when that is far from the case. But again you miss the point. The point is that me and Jamvet were discussing the particulars of Dem vs Rep treatment of black citizens- not whites or anyone else. You continue to deviate into things that we weren’t talking about.
Regardless though Jamvet has ended the issue for us all. Upon his proclomation that we Suck with a capital S I now yield my position. A post like his 9:41 just don’t get much funnier even if it do come at our expense.

Missed your comment earlier, but to answer your question. Yes.
http://mlk-kpp01.stanford.edu/index.php/encyclopedia/encyclopedia/enc_childrens_crusade
On 2 May, more than a thousand African American students skipped their classes and gathered at Sixth Street Baptist Church to march to downtown Birmingham. As they approached police lines, hundreds were arrested and carried off to jail in paddy wagons and school buses. When hundreds more young people gathered the following day for another march, commissioner Bull Connor directed the local police and fire departments to use force to halt the demonstration. Images of children being blasted by high-pressure fire hoses, clubbed by police officers, and attacked by police dogs appeared on television and in newspapers and triggered outrage throughout the world.
On the evening of 3 May, King offered encouragement to parents of the young protesters in a speech delivered at the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church. He said, “Don’t worry about your children; they are going to be alright. Don’t hold them back if they want to go to jail, for they are not only doing a job for themselves, but for all of America and for all of mankind.”
That actually took place in Birmingham, Dr. Rice’s hometown. The good thing about growing up in Alabama was the ability to hear about many of these events with first hand knowledge. I still haven’t been able to get my mom to open up much about anything she did though but not for a lack of trying.

But it is clear she grew up a child of segregation and probably should not be marginalized by liberals in some way just because she is a black Republican.
To add, I’m not marginalizing her at all, and I will make no attempt to do so. I will not, however, place her on a pedestal to which she does not belong, especially after knowing people who risked injury and death during that same time. If it makes me sound awful, that’s not my intent. Personally knowing people who sacrificed tends to make me hold them up just a slight bit higher than those who did not. In my view, its no different than acknowledging a veteran who’s been to Iraq/Afghanistan 8 times in comparison to his friend who’s almost identical in life experiences to the vet except for the military service and combat.

Of course I do not know Herman Cain or his thought processes back in the 60s, however he did say the following:
The exchange started when O’Donnell presented the following passage from Cain’s book: “The Civil Rights movement was a few years in front of me. I was too young to participate when they first started the Freedom Rides and the sit-ins. So on a day-to-day basis, it didn’t have an impact. I just kept going to school, doing what I was supposed to do, and stayed out of trouble — I didn’t go downtown and try to participate in the sit-ins…counter to our real feelings, we decided to avoid trouble by moving to the back of the bus when the driver told us to…Dad always said, ‘Stay out of trouble,’ and we did.”

I think it was FDR and the New Deal that attracted a lot of blacks. Then after WWII the dems chased out the southern Dixiecrats, lead by Truman, who intergrated the Army.
Later, Kennedy and LBJ came along with civil rights. When Kennedy sent troops to Mississippi and later LBJ pushed the civil rights acts through and signed them, that finished off the deal.
Goldwater and later Nixon made outright appeals to southern segs to get them to vote GOP. They were both pretty blatent.

Cain responded that he was a high school student and, therefore, was not free to act on his own. Yet Cain claimed, “If I had been a college student I probably would have been participating.” When O’Donnell pointed out that Cain was actually a college student from 1963 to 1967 during some of the most well-known clashes, such as “Bloody Sunday” in Selma, which led to the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, took place.

“Northern blackds were probably in labor unions. That may also explain some of it.”
Doubtful. Some economists like Sowell have noted that unions used to be particularly ambivalent about letting blacks into their trades and to some extent still are today. For example blacks in construction and other trades have lower union representation than whites- a lot lower I think. They were kinda like good ole boy clubs that didn’t let blacks in. If you ever watch a union strike on tv for example the longshoreman out in Long Beach earlier this year I think it was you will notice that you don’t see very many blacks in them. Its kind of interesting but until I started reading about it I had no idea that unions resisted black membership and for such a long time. Not quite so with unions like the automakers union but with many other unions it seems to be that way.

Yep. Same here. And when I see a guy willing to beat up on children and call them brats because they move around I see a bully and a despicable, petty little man. And even if they are too cowardly to admit it and lack the stones to chastise your nasty comment I’m sure many of the liberals would probably feel the same way. I know they would if a con said that about the Obama children. And I don’t think anyone doubts that.

The master of debt creation is going to wipe out federal debt!
A sucker is born every minute!
“”"”"”"”"”"”"”By making debt the centerpiece of his campaign, Romney was making a calculated bluff of historic dimensions – placing a massive all-in bet on the rank incompetence of the American press corps. The result has been a brilliant comedy: A man makes a $250 million fortune loading up companies with debt and then extracting million-dollar fees from those same companies, in exchange for the generous service of telling them who needs to be fired in order to finance the debt payments he saddled them with in the first place. That same man then runs for president riding an image of children roasting on flames of debt, choosing as his running mate perhaps the only politician in America more pompous and self-righteous on the subject of the evils of borrowed money than the candidate himself. If Romney pulls off this whopper, you’ll have to tip your hat to him: No one in history has ever successfully run for president riding this big of a lie. It’s almost enough to make you think he really is qualified for the White House.”"”"”"”"”"”"”"”"”"”

Then after that everything will be hunky dory. The debt will magically disappear, economic growth will grow to 22%, everyone will own his castle, and jobs will be insourced that pay $600 an hour.

The left is upset, because all the “able to, but – not willing to work” will have to get out of the sack to drag their drunkin butts to the polling areas and vote once more. They have money for drugs and booze, cause we pay for their kids schools, clothes, food, and medical.way to go “Big O” you have quite an elite following.
