The big mystery of the 2012 GOP convention

be6eb3a071c9b318190f6a706700d39e

Can anybody identify that rectangular item in the upper left-hand corner of this AP photo, taken during Paul Ryan’s speech last night to the Republican National Convention?

The vice-presidential nominee seemed to be glancing at it quite a bit last night, almost as if he was reading from it. Anybody got any ideas? In fact, I believe that every single speaker at the convention with one exception — Condi Rice — has been staring at that thing during their speeches. It’s almost as if they needed somebody to tell them what to say.

I’m going to be watching Mitt Romney closely tonight, just to see if he too starts staring at that … whatever it is. Weird, huh?

I would agree that even “most” of the Republicans are not so far right as y’all’ve been accused of, but the wacked out loonies have hijacked the party and set the agenda. I had hoped that with the selection of Romney y’all were making a move back toward the center, but his choice of that self-hating closet case Ryan signaled that y’all are headed even further to the nastiest extremes…

“but if you ask the Kurds, Sadam did have them and did use them…”

Yes, he did…at least 10 years BEFORE we invaded. And those attacks were one of the main reasons for the no-fly zones that we patrolled for those 10+ years. And the remnents of those weapons that WERE found were too aged and deteriorated to be of any use whatsoever.

If the Kurds are going to be used as an excuse for invasion…we should have done it, as of NOW, 20 years ago.

I don’t know why anyone would care about elected officials using teleprompters… Republican or Democrat. Very few individuals are gifted with the ability to just speak to large audiences completely unscripted and the flack Obama has received seems a little silly to me. That said, pointing out hypocrisy or double standards isn’t going to enlighten debate in this election by much. : /

Both political parties seem to be run by those at the extremes rather than those in the middle. Take a good look at the posters on this blog. USMC:

Speech by RADM J. Stark, USN, President of the Naval War College.

“The first reason I like Marines: They set high standards for themselves and those around them, and will accept nothing less.

I like the way Marines march.

I like the way Marines do their basic training whether it’s Quantico, San Diego, or Parris Island.

I like the idea that Marines cultivate an ethos conductive of producing hard people in a soft age.

I like the fact that Marines stay in shape.

I like the fact that the Marines only have one boss – The Commandant.

And I like the directness of the Commandant.

I like the fact that Marines are stubborn.

I like the way Marines obey orders.

I like the way Marines make the most of the press.

I like the wholehearted professionalism of the Marines.

It occurred to me that the services could be characterized by different breeds of dogs.

The Air Force reminded me of a French Poodle. The poodle always looks perfect…sometimes a bit pampered and always travels first class. But don’t ever forget that the poodle was bred as a hunting dog and in a fight it’s very dangerous.

The Army is kind of like a St. Bernard. It’s big and heavy and sometimes seems a bit clumsy. But it’s very powerful and has lots of stamina. So you want it for the long haul.

The Navy, God bless us, is a Golden Retriever. They’re good natured and great around the house. The kids love ‘em. Sometimes their hair is a bit long….they go wandering off for long periods of time, and they love water.

Marines I see as two breeds, Rottweilers or Dobermans, because Marines come in two varieties: big and mean or skinny and mean. They’re aggressive on the attack and tenacious on defense. They’ve got really short hair and they always go for the throat. That sounds like a Marine to me!

So what I really like about Marines is that first to fight isn’t just a motto, it’s a way of life.

From the day they were formed at Tun Tavern 200 plus years ago, Marines have distinguished themselves on battlefields around the world. From the fighting tops of the Bonhomme Richard, to the sands of Barbary Coast, from the swamps of New Orleans to the halls of Montezuma, from Belleau Wood, to the Argonne Forest, to Guadalcanal, and Iwo Jima, and Okinawa and Inchon, and Chosin Reservoir and Hue City and , Quang Tri and Dong Ha and Beirut, and Grenada, and Panama, and Somalia and Bosnia and (Iraq and Afghanistan) a thousand unnamed battlefields in godforsaken parts of the globe, Marines have distinguished themselves by their bravery, and stubbornness and aggressive spirit, and sacrifice, and love of country, and loyalty to one another. They’ve done it for you and me, and this country we all love so dearly.

They asked for nothing more than the honor of being a United States Marine.”

Bain Capital began looking at investing in the steel start-up in late 1993. At the time, Steel Dynamics was weighing where to locate its first plant, based in part on which region offered the best tax incentives. In June 1994, Bain put $18.2 million into Steel Dynamics, making it the largest domestic equity holder. It sold its stake five years later for $104 million, a return of more than $85 million.

As Bain made its investment, the state and county pledged $37 million in subsidies and grants for the $385-million plant project. The county also levied a new income tax to finance infrastructure improvements to benefit the steel mill over the heated objections of some county residents.

So is Mitt going to be telling us by way of this example how his company took advantage of tax subsidies in order to make his money before he then turned around and cheated us out of even paying income taxes on it. If he does, I sure hope he at least shares with us the details so all of us can enjoy making such a living off the hard work of the people that built all that.

they both suck,

Well it fits my narrative you see. Tee hee. Seriously Jamvet brought up 130 years of history. So if the subject is history then its appropriate to talk about it since it was the subject.

“but not when talking about a portion of the 47% who “don’t pay taxes”.

Looks like keep need an economics lesson he do. If you don’t pay taxes and you in fact pay a negative tax rate then you’re not really contributing much to economic growth or the tax base for that matter. Transfer payments are just that- transfer payments. They are not economic stimulators or promoters of economic growth. If they were then we could all sit on our asses and just trade transfer payments and spend that money in the economy and the economy would boom. Reality is otherwise. Silly keep.

They BOTH suck

Funny how you leave out all the taxes including employee taxes, sales taxes, and economic activity that was generated due to Bain employees that was injected right back into the local economy. But then that wouldn’t fit your narrative now would it?

Those employee taxes such as payroll taxes go into the trust funds to help make sure that folks are not left homeless and destitute after Gordon Gekko comes through and loads down their company with debt and then takes all that money as fees and cheats the government out of its taxes to boot. Sales taxes, when collected typically go back into the state and local economies until the company is driven into banruptcy by the Mitt Gekkos or until the employees are forced out of their jobs by the Mitt Gekkos. But that wouldn’t fit your narrowitve, would it.

And can you prove where Mitt cheated us out of paying his taxes?

Of course, can’t you read. I paid a higher percentage than he did on less. He cheated. He still cheats and he wants to cheat even more.

How much did you pay?

Keep Up the Good Fight!

Hmmmm.. oh I get it. GE and other corporations who pay zero taxes are not really contributing to economic growth. Those Bain companies that went bankrupt were of course adding to economic growth when they took all those government funds and pocketed them.
