The big mystery of the 2012 GOP convention
Can anybody identify that rectangular item in the upper left-hand corner of this AP photo, taken during Paul Ryan’s speech last night to the Republican National Convention?
The vice-presidential nominee seemed to be glancing at it quite a bit last night, almost as if he was reading from it. Anybody got any ideas? In fact, I believe that every single speaker at the convention with one exception — Condi Rice — has been staring at that thing during their speeches. It’s almost as if they needed somebody to tell them what to say.
I’m going to be watching Mitt Romney closely tonight, just to see if he too starts staring at that … whatever it is. Weird, huh?

Towncrier: Ann Coulter has a history of misusing evidence. She will make a claim, then use evidence that does not support her claim, and say that it does. Since YOU are the one asserting that the welfare ad is accurate, perhaps you would like to actually read analysis which asserts otherwise from, oh, EVERYWHERE else?
I do not sully my computer with anything from The Daily Caller anymore, not after they have been shown, repeatedly, to get things wrong. If your argument is then that other fact checkers cannot be relied upon because they sometimes get things wrong too, then you are simply creating an impasse on purpose to avoid examining the evidence that shows the welfare as is not only inaccurate, but a flat out lie.

That comment rubbed me the wrong way, too, and I was ready to use it against her. The more I watched her though and the more I thought about it, I can see myself saying something very similar, say, if Unmentionable were elected President (ha! perish the thought, I wouldn’t vote for him. He’d give the country back to the Indians!) She was inexperienced in the ways of the glaring limelight. She learned quickly and has been consistently one of the most gracious First Ladies, accepting the traditional role with warmth and charm. She won me over when she chose the Huckabee show to announce her “cause” of childhood good nutrition, a cause on which she and he agreed and were passionate. That was a class act on both their parts, imauo.

I have read some of the liberal articles you have linked and often read articles from sites like the Huffington Post, the New Republic and others. I listen to arguments here as well, because while I have different values from many here, I also recognize that liberals are not always wrong (any more than conservatives are always right) and vice versa.

Actually, I did take one of her arguments on. She falsely claimed that everybody was quoting a single fact-checker about the welfare ads. That clearly wasn’t true.
That statement alone, a statement in a piece about others not telling the truth, illustrates (yet again) that nothing she tells us can be trusted. It’s tiring to argue with somebody who continually demonstrates that she’ll say anything to defend the indefensible.

I used to read both, and now I don’t because I have seen it’s a complete waste of time. If you can find someone else who isn’t also on my ignore list who says the welfare ad is accurate, then fine. And if you have a separate link to an analysis by “someone in the liberal camp” then that’s fine too. But this is Ann Coulter we are talking about. It is unlikely (but not impossible) that she misused whoever you were talking about’s analysis.

That was not an argument; it was a statement of fact in my opinion. In my book, purporting or claiming to tell the truth or facts and then NOT doing it then you lose all credibility. They are calling themselves “FACT CHECKERS”, for Pete’s sake. And they have been shown to be wrong many times. So they should cease and desist, imho. Coulter is making claims and arguments – she is NOT calling herself a fact checker.

Not so. But my problem with these so-called “fact checkers” is that I think we all want to be able to go to some authoritative source of information to determine the truth amidst all of the conflicting statements and evidence. So they were attractive to me – after all, who wants to spend hours determining the truth or falsity of every claim? But as I have discovered they, and the “evidence” they adduce, are not entirely reliable, I am put back in the same position. I no longer can trust their verdict so I refer to them only as a possible source of evidence for conducting my own investigation.
When they purport to present the facts and don’t then they are being dishonest and maybe worse.

Sorry…you (like all of us) will believe what you want to. In my epistemology there is nothing that can be absolutely known to be true. There are propositions and evidence and beyond that a choice must be made. There is always, in other words, an element of choice in what we believe.
If you want to ignore certain people or sources of information, that is your prerogative. I am not going to stop you. Listen to whom you will and believe what you will.

That statement is an obviously biased one – not much different that the ones Jay makes in his columns. I agree with you that is is a gross generalization meant to besmirch liberals (since you uses the term “herd” in the same breath). But that isn’t really the meat of her argument – it was only a put-down (which, she should really know, does not win people over). You have to learn to get past such childish attacks to evaluate the validity of one’s argument (I do it all of the time on the Huffington Post).

While I am no great supporter of many of their political positions, President Obama owes a great debt to Andrew Young, Colin Powell and Condaleeza Rice for paving the way to make it possible for him to be elected to the highest office in the land. These three were the face of our country to the world. They made it possible for him to be our face to ourselves. Give them their just due.

You should read some Descartes, Kant, Hume and others. I am told the earth is round. People have believed otherwise. I have been shown photographs that it is round. But I had not independently verified this until I stood near the top of Mauna Kea and looked out over the ocean to indeed see that there was a curvature in the earth’s surface. My point is simply this: 99.99999% of what we “know” is from accepting the “authoritative” statements of others (which may or may not be correct).

Well I did see an affiliate tv station of NBC which is the most liberal of the major networks. And the station if I remember was from philly- not exactly a Republican stronghold of course. If it was you wouldn’t have mobs randomly attacking people in the streets now would you? Just another Dem cesspool of anarchy and urban decay.

Those WMDs? Most of the Democratic party signed off on them prior to going to war. I won;t do your homework for you but you might google all of the Democrats that voted to go to war, stated that we have to find those WMDs and bring Saddam to a just end. And you blame Bush and the Repubs.
