Paul Ryan delivered a damn good speech last night.
You could argue with and dispute many of the points that he made, but that’s the thing about a speech: You don’t get to argue with it while it’s being delivered. A speech of that sort creates a protected reality, giving the speaker an unchallenged, extended moment in which to define himself, his party and his world. Ryan used that moment well.

(The best example of that phenomenon may have been Ryan’s predecessor, Sarah Palin, who in the same speech four years earlier created an attractive image of herself and her world that crumbled the moment she left the stage.)
Ryan, a creature of Washington for all of his adult life, knows his business and his role. As the enthusiastic response of his fellow Republicans demonstrated, last night he made their world his world, succeeding in linking speaker and audience in common outlook and purpose. The larger, more difficult question is whether he made a similar connection with millions of Americans watching from home.
In many ways he probably did. When he spoke of a tough economy — “23 million people, unemployed or underemployed. Nearly one in six Americans is living in poverty. Millions of young Americans have graduated from college during the Obama presidency, ready to use their gifts and get moving in life. Half of them can’t find the work they studied for, or any work at all” — it was an America that everybody in the convention hall and in living rooms recognized.
When he warned of our deepening national debt, and the fear that our children would live more cramped and difficult lives than we have, he echoed fears felt by any American who is paying attention to public life.
But the next morning, once the music has died, the applause has disappeared and the janitors are sweeping the floor of the previous night’s discards, things come into focus a bit more sharply.
For example, it was interesting to watch Ryan bewail the fact that this country’s credit rating had been downgraded, failing to mention that it was downgraded because he and his fellow Republicans conspired to create an artificial and completely unnecessary crisis over the debt ceiling. It went oddly unmentioned.
Ryan also noted that Obama had created a bipartisan debt commission whose report had come to nothing, yet somehow the congressman neglected to point out his own prominent role in its demise. He himself, as a member of the Simpson-Bowles commission, voted against accepting its recommendations and by doing so he made sure the report went nowhere.
Likewise, when Ryan accused Obama of “raiding” Medicare of $716 billion, he failed to note that in his House budget that made him famous, he too diverted $716 billion from Medicare. Instead of using it to extend health care to millions of uninsured Americans, he used it to finance more tax cuts for the wealthy. A difference in prioirities, I suppose.
Finally, in a speech that stressed responsibility and tough decisions, Ryan put the nation’s burgeoning debt entirely on the shoulders of one man.
“Yet by his own decisions, President Obama has added more debt than any other president before him, and more than all the troubled governments of Europe combined,” Ryan charged. “One president, one term, $5 trillion in new debt.”
Surely the chairman of the House Budget Committee, where all spending bills originate, must have played some tiny role in that process, did he not? Surely a politician committed to truth-telling on tough topics would not ignore the role that he and his own party played — budget-busting tax cuts that never produced promised economic growth; two wars, one necessary but badly led, the other a tragic misadventure, and both of them hugely expensive and unfunded; and an economic crisis unmatched in 80 years, touched off by a steady deregulation of Wall Street that he and his fellow Republicans insist even now must be deregulated even further.
Surely these too played a role, did they not?
And if nothing is being done in Washington, it is useful to ask whether a party that scorns compromise, that ejects from its membership any who dare question its holy agenda, and that pursues an extremist economic platform to the exclusion of all else just might, perhaps, maybe bear some responsibility for that state of affairs?
These are the kind of “details” that can be swept away, momentarily, in the emotion of a good speech well-delivered. But they do not go away forever. The next morning — this morning — they still stare all of us in the face.

Welcome to imbecile nation, where an attempt to help provide health care for the 50 million uninsured in this country is a “cold power play”, something that “we didn’t even ask for”.
Paul Ryan is a two-bit punk and a liar who is a parasite on the body of the people. Never really done any constructive thinking or work in his life, yet gets up every day and dedicates himself to stripping others less fortunate than himself from the possibility of securing or maintaining their livelihood.

Tired of the smear…The USA has a big financial problem. Medicare will be totally broke – out of money – in twelve years. Obama did take / steal $7+ billion from medicare to make his bill financial neutral – which has been proven it is not. Like it or not, whether a Republican or democratc, you have a choice..surrender to big government and vote Obama ot Vote Mitt and Ryan and have a chance, yes that is correct, a chance to regain freedom. Obama and his administration have shreddded the constitution from the EPA, to the NLRB. I love the media treats Obama and company as celebraties..hollywood style while the USA is going to hell….real median household income went from $50,112 when Obama took over to $49,777, the number of unemployed went from $11,616,000 to $14,485,000, the number of Federal Employess ( big brother is watching) went from 2,779,000 to 2,840,000, the number of food stamp recipients went from 31,983,716 to 43,200,878, national debt in trillions went from $10.627 to 14.052. As for medicare where Obama stole $7+ billion..it was designed as an insurance program..the citizens paid into it all their working life to pay for insurance in their retirement..Obama looks as if it is another slush fund for him to spend…Gee Jay, that tingling feeling down your leg may not be what you think. We have a choice..big brother in Obama or a chance to get back to freedom – Mitt and Ryan..May God have mercy on The USA’s soul!!!

Ryan’s a smart guy. So’s Romney. No one who isn’t gets to that level (but some try awful hard to challenge that assertion).
So Ryan must absolutely know how duplicitous his statements are. Which means he’s willing to bet those not yet decided are ignorant enough to not see thu his falsehoods.
In response to those who say ‘well, Obama…” as a justification, I will note the major difference is the one Jay outlined yesterday. This is not a case of an occasional misstatement. It is not the case of carefully shading a statement so it can give a false impression. It is the central strategy of the campaign to use major elements that have repeatedly been shown to be false.

GOP Convention, Mitt Romney Haunted By Ghost Of George W. Bush
WASHINGTON — George W. Bush made it clear months ago that he wouldn’t attend the Republican National Convention this week in Tampa. But his absence is not just physical; it’s metaphysical.
That’s because Bush’s very existence belies two of the most critical selling points of GOP nominee Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign: That tax cuts for the rich will create jobs, and that Romney is bringing a fresh new approach that can turn the country’s fortunes around.

“Our credit rating was downgraded because of our debt.”
Bollocks:
S&P removed for the first time the triple-A rating the U.S. has held for 70 years, saying the budget deal recently brokered in Washington didn’t do enough to address the gloomy outlook for America’s finances. It downgraded long-term U.S. debt to AA+, a score that ranks below more than a dozen governments’, including Liechtenstein’s, and on par with Belgium’s and New Zealand’s. S&P also put the new grade on “negative outlook,” meaning the U.S. has little chance of regaining the top rating in the near term.
(snip)
S&P said the downgrade “reflects our opinion that the fiscal consolidation plan that Congress and the administration recently agreed to falls short of what, in our view, would be necessary to stabilize the government’s medium-term debt dynamics.” It also blamed the weakened “effectiveness, stability, and predictability” of U.S. policy making and political institutions at a time when challenges are mounting.

Sure it does. A damn good speech draws people in, gets them pumped up, makes them want to do something. Doesn’t necessarily have to be factually accurate to be a good speech.

Again, from the conservative website (I really have to give them credit for publishing this):
“Fact: While Ryan tried to pin the downgrade of the United States’ credit rating on spending under President Obama, the credit rating was actually downgraded because Republicans threatened not to raise the debt ceiling.
Fact: While Ryan blamed President Obama for the shut down of a GM plant in Janesville, Wisconsin, the plant was actually closed under President George W. Bush. Ryan actually asked for federal spending to save the plant, while Romney has criticized the auto industry bailout that President Obama ultimately enacted to prevent other plants from closing.
Fact: Though Ryan insisted that President Obama wants to give all the credit for private sector success to government, that isn’t what the president said. Period.
Fact: Though Paul Ryan accused President Obama of taking $716 billion out of Medicare, the fact is that that amount was savings in Medicare reimbursement rates (which, incidentally, save Medicare recipients out-of-pocket costs, too) and Ryan himself embraced these savings in his budget plan.

It’s clearly President Obama’s fault that George Bush and the Republicans, including dear Mr. Ryan, passed legislation for tax cuts in 2001 and 2003 that were not offset by any reductions in spending, legislation for two wars with no funding and an unfunded prescription drug benefit. Just ask any Republican. They’ll tell ya. And it just goes without saying that President Obama caused the Great Recession, that began in December of 2007, and triggered the increases in spending on food stamps and Medicaid and unemployment benefits, etc. And of I would be remisss to not mention that President Obama’s stimulus just wouldn’t be the same if it had not included the Republican demands for more tax cuts, a third of the total, that they claimed would stimulate the economy even more than the stimulus money that they, including dear Mr. Ryan, begged for to fund actual construction jobs, etc., in every state in the Union. .

one more quote from the same WSJ article:
The firm’s conclusion “was pretty much motivated by all of the debate about the raising of the debt ceiling,” John Chambers, chairman of S&P’s sovereign ratings committee, said in an interview. “It involved a level of brinksmanship greater than what we had expected earlier in the year.”
Obama is over
August 30th, 2012
9:20 am
“None of us should have to settle for the best this administration has to offer, a dull adventure-less journey from one entitlement to the next, a government planned life, a country where everything is free but us.”
Obama is going to have to defend stripping $716B away from seniors to finance Obamacare. Ryan has destroyed Obama in the past on this issue and will do so again over the next 60 days.
Obama can no longer blame others for the environment he inherited. His record speaks for itself. Obama has to finally accept responsibility and accountability for his actions. He also needs to learn that respect is something that is earned, it is not automatically granted because of a title. Perhaps Obama will find the respect he so desperately desires after he is back in the private sector. Jimmy Carter gained nore credibility through Habitat for Humanity than he did in office, but then again, Carter does not have the ego that Obama does. The economy, foreign affairs, energy policy, tax and entitlement reform, unifying Washington- Obama has failed miserably in all of these areas that he optimistically laid out in his inaugural address. Obama will be on the defensive for the next 60 days. I am sure that his team will focus on character assasination, the race card, and wealth envy because that is all they have to run on.

The credit rating agencies CLEARLY STATED — when they announced the downgrade — that it had much more to do with Congress’ intransigence about raising the debt ceiling than with anything the President said or did.

Recon – “Unnecessary crises over debt. Good grief Jay where did you get this cut and paste?”
Here Recon, facts and reading are your friend. You’ll notice the BOTH parties are mentioned.
From the S&P:
“The political brinksmanship of recent months highlights what we see as America’s governance and policymaking becoming less stable, less effective, and less predictable than what we previously believed. The statutory debt ceiling and the threat of default have become political bargaining chips in the debate over fiscal policy. Despite this year’s wide-ranging debate, in our view, the differences between political parties have proven to be extraordinarily difficult to bridge, and, as we see it, the resulting agreement fell well short of the comprehensive fiscal consolidation program that some proponents had envisaged until quite recently. Republicans and Democrats have only been able to agree to relatively modest savings on discretionary spending while delegating to the Select Committee decisions on more comprehensive measures. It appears that for now, new revenues have dropped down on the menu of policy options. In addition, the plan envisions only minor policy changes on Medicare and little change in other entitlements, the containment of which we and most other independent observers regard as key to long-term fiscal sustainability.”

After all, the wealthiest will get more tax cuts and the military spending will increase. Doesn’t that make it all worthwhile.

—————–
Cynthia, I’ll skip that last question and deal only with the first.
Almost a third of the stimulus in question comprised tax cuts, not spending. It was yet another attempt by Obama at compromise, yet another attempt that was spurned by Republicans.
Every independent economist that has looked at the stimulus, including the CBO, has judged it a success at softening the economic blow of the largest crisis in 80 years and in preserving jobs at a critical moment. Such packages are standard in such situations.
Bush passed a stimulus, including spending increases, shortly after he took office in 2001 (remember those $600 checks mailed out to each household, all of which was added to the deficit?) and again in 2008, when the economy had already begun its steep descent.
Paul Ryan voted in favor of both of them.

Illionois was downgraded by S & P on Tuesday because of never ending debt accumulation and no plan going forward.. Only one state in the country has a lower bond rating- California. Imagine that. Could it be that entering into above market contracts with organized labor in exchange for voting/campaign contribution support is a failed model that comes at a ridiculous cost for taxpayers? I wonder if Obama will intervene in the threatened longshoremans’ strike in Savannah? In an election year, that would require a spine and a sense of leadership responsibility. Obama has neither.

When Ryan talks about leadership, I think you are missing the point. A great leader would not let this happen under his watch. He would find a way to work with the rest of D.C and accomplish something. All of this ‘it’s not Obama’s fault’ line of reasoning is so bogus and such a lame excuse. He’s got zero leadership skills. He does have great persuasive skills over the dumb masses, that is clear. Come on now. That’s a bunch of horse manure. The S & P may give that as a reason in order to appear non-partisan but we’ve been arguing about the debt and deficits for years. They didn’t downgrade the debt cause some folks were arguing about it. They downgraded it because it was getting out of hand and used the excuse that it was about partisan wrangling so as to not take sides. If I remember correctly I think the administration had also leveled not so thinly veiled threats against the rating agencies in the wake of the housing fiasco and the ratings of all those wall street instruments that turned out to be junk.
“Surely the chairman of the House Budget Committee, where all spending bills originate, must have played some tiny role in that process, did he not?”
Well this is kinda breathtaking. On the one hand you criticize Ryan and the Repubs for forcing the debt issue in order to get the Dems to start taking debt reduction seriously. Then you turn around and criticize him for being part of the spending spree that you just criticized him for trying to stop. Geez.

Perhaps it is the conned that fail to understand the relationship given that Paul Ryan’s plan would not balance the budget for 28 years. That means that under his budget, more money must be borrowed each year for 28 years and that means that the debt continues to rise for 28 years and that means that the debt ceiling will continue to rise to compensate for those 28 years.

Jay Bookman writes: “For example, it was interesting to watch Ryan bewail the fact that this country’s credit rating had been downgraded, failing to mention that it was downgraded because he and his fellow Republicans conspired to create an artificial and completely unnecessary crisis over the debt ceiling. It went oddly unmentioned.
—————————————————-
While that’s the narrative the Dmeocrats and their dishonest msm lackeys have created, it’s not the reason why the credit rating was downgraded. The downgrade was because Obama and Congress failed to agree to a fiscal plan that S&P felt would stabilize the government’s medium-term debt dynamics.

Jay: good blog this morning. About all I can add is that the loose relationship with facts, more to your point, failure to include all of them, is not unique to the GOP. We have heard the same sort of half-truths from the Obama campaign and surrogates this cycle. In fact, both sides do this during every election cycle, debate, or presentation in which one side or the other is trying to sell their ideas to their constituency. In others words, business as usual.

Looks like Jay has inherited the “blame” game from King Obama. I wouldn’t have expected anymore from him. Its ok when the democrats who control the Senate blocks legislation passed by the House. Its ok when the President himself calls together a group of Republicans and Democrats and says basically that things will be done his way because after all “I won” . . . oh the web that Jay continues to weave.

Dartmouth political scientist Dean Lacy found the more a county receives in federal government payments, the more likely it is to vote RepublicanThe New York Times referred to Lacy’s research in its understated but still rather shocking feature “Even Critics of Safety Net Depend On It.” As Lacy elaborated to a WNYC reporter: “The counties that are getting more in crop subsidies, housing assistance, and Medicaid payments are a lot more Republican. So it really is about that catch-all category that you might call welfare.” Yet because their local congressmen and women tend to defend that type of “welfare,” Lacy says, “they have the luxury of voting on social issues knowing that these federal spending programs will be kept in place.”
So that is why so many posters here on the govt dole have a disconnect.

It amazes me that the entire focus of the right is on government borrowed money, they have not kept a similar watch on private sector borrowing money during the Bush administration. A sign similar to the one so Newt Gingrichishly displayed in this Moose Club convention should have had a similar sign during the Bush years that showed the private debt of the American people and corporations.
The debt gave the American people a false impression of their net worth. It was money spent that was not made and the Bush administration let it be their car in every garage, their turkey in every oven. The GOP Enron gave its employees the false impression they were employed at over the qualification salaries they were receiving. I remember Ebbers at MCI having a 600 million dollar personal line of credit with Bank of America and more from his own company. As Obama says these people did not do this by themselves they did it with the help of the private sector, which then reported this easy money as profits giving a false impression of the success of the company, then bringing the price of its stock up above any real premium value. This is where the country went bust and it would have stopped there but one of Bush’s last moves was to bail these banks out endorsing their stupidity or clever greed. Why would you do something like that? They were partners, making a false statement about the condition of this country, one making huge money the other looking like a genius politician with a false economic plan that was really cooking the books. What we see now in this economy is probably what the Bush years would have looked like if he had been honest. And now they want to bring the same people back to fake some more prosperity. That is what puts Obama at a disadvantage, he is trying to win without steroids and put real prosperity on the books something that has not been tried for several years.

If they were really downgrading the debt just because the pols were arguing about how to reduce the debt then we would have a DDD rating given the continuing debate over how to reduce the debt. If a married couple carries a 5k visa balance and the husband and wife are arguing about how much to pay down on the credit card does their credit get dinged because they are arguing about how much to pay on it? No. Equifax could give a flip about that. They care only about ability to pay.

If you Google “Obama teleprompter,” you’ll get 2.5 million results as it’s been a running joke among conservatives for nearly six years.
Why this became such a touchstone for conservative attacks on President Obama is completely mystifying, but with this year’s general election taking shape it’s a good time for progressives to arm themselves with one quick and easy way to respond to any use of the words “Obama” and “teleprompter” in the same sentence.

What’s bad news for Obama is that 75-80% of Americans vote for cause and effect. Example, you’re black, you vote for the black guy. You’re Gay, you vote for someone who supports YOUR issue. So if you are trying to survive in an Obama economy, High unemployment, $4 gas, etc, you vote cause and effect. It’s caused by Obama ( fair or not, but it’s his show) and it’s effecting you. So, the guy in the office is the blame ( see George W.). And when all you hear is, it’s not my fault and God, anybody but the other guy as your battle cry, you lose. Hello President Romney.

I voted for Obama b/c I thought it would inspire hope in minorities and we could get past wasting our energies trying so hard just to get along as a country, and work on some tough issues. But guess what happened instead? His election opened up the floodgates of the entitlements and the ‘where’s my Obama check’ mentality. it did the exact opposite of what I thought it would do.
I think back to an old episode of Good Times, where Florida stresses over how they will come up with some money to pay a bill or face going on welfare. They were too proud for welfar and looked at it like a sign of defeat. Our country looks at entitlements as a god given right, a perk even, the more you can bilk out of the system the better. It’s what poor people do, ask them, I know lots of them. They don’t even see the harm, it f you can get a check, get a check.
How does one have an intelligent debate with people like this? They have zero long term or strategic thinking and are incapable of seeing beyond their next check. My only hope is that people of this mind set do not vote or raise offspring to follow in their footsteps. God help us all.

Joe Mama,
So the administration’s usual bullying tactics had no play in S&P’s reasoning for downgrading our debt? It would strain credulity to believe it didn’t.
However, it appears to me that it was the prudent thing to do, and had S&P not lowered the credit rating, one could charge them with dereliction of duty. The Obama Administration seemed to be using intimidation tactics in the media, going after the reputation of S&P as the Administration was attempting to defend themselves. It seems rather unfortunate that the US Treasury Secretary and the Obama Administration would use such tactics, and throw this debt rating downgrade into the media as a political football.

Jay Jay Jay… The rousing speech by Ryan was certainly a serious punch in the gut for you liberals. Not really for dems. Especially the few and far between that can think for themselves. The credit rating was downgraded because of the enormous debt created and continuing under Obama the regime. If you want to blame it on Ryan for not supporting Simpson/Bowles go for it but that’s a real stretch. Obama didn’t support if either. Seems to me he would be the main character that would matter in its support? But no using liberal logic it failed all because of a Congressman named Ryan. Laughable Jay. Then you go on to say Ryan’s plan for Medicare would give more tax cuts for the wealthy. Even more laughable Jay. He used the monstrosity of Obamacare as a starting point for his plan. he had to. Its the law of the land forced on us solely by dems. Then after a revision those cuts that you fruits on the left continue to lie about were reinstated sing a method that would repeal Obamacare and restore the $716 billion Obama is stealing from seniors. Lastly Obama does shoulder all the blame for the debt he has accumulated. That’s a fact you simply cannot ignore. Oblama has received zero votes for every single budget he’s put forward. The Senate is supposed to work with the house and produce their own budget. Harriot Reid has failed the American people and produced none. Ryan has passed a budget reducing the deficit that dems in the Senate won pass.

Uh. Yes. I did read them. So are you opining as Jay did also that the main reason for the debt downgrade was due to the arguing? Or do you think the actual debt itself may of had something to do with it? For example on the link I just posted S&P went back and forth over what the O administration said was questionable accounting regarding 2 trillion dollars. They were going back and forth about the debt itself- not the arguing that was going on between Ds and Rs. Jay,
You are spot on about Ryan’s musings last evening.
We can truly never be sure about what is true about any numbers regarding deficit, medicare, et al because the truth is likely somewhere in the middle IMO…
The deficit is any elected officials fault as we all know we are not their primary interests.
The lie about GM plant closing is laughable to be sure. The lies will continue next week as well…I’m seeing that DEMs are beginning to pull the race card more often at this time….that’s scary and possibly suggests desperation since they know they will get outspent so the odds are against second term for Obama..

As I have said before, if the GOP nomimated Jessus Christ himself, you liberals would reject the nomination and demonize Christ for being too religious.
Paul Ryan’s background, credentials, and character stands on its own. Your choice of nomimation is in stark difference to Ryan. My God, you people cannot even defend Obama’s background, credentials, or character, let alone his presidentail record.
It’s just more of the same. Old trumpets of disdain, distraction, and diversion. You’ve got nothing. You’ve got frustration. You’ve only got loony tune Bookmans to lead your charge.
Check out the rest of your biased bunch of media goons doing your bidding. Ron Fournier (National Journal)”Blacks wouldn’t have to work under Romney”. Low class misrepresentation. By the way…he and his Democrat friends created Fact Checkers (phoney fact checkers)that Bookman gets his info from. John Harris (Politico) who is married to the former head of NARAL in Virginia. Andy Barr of Politico left Politico to work for the DNC. Johnathan Allen of Politico once worked for Debbie Wasserman Schultz. Yahoo just fired news Washington Bureau Chief, David Chalain, for talking on a live mic he didn’t know was live that “Romney had no problem partying while black people drowned”.
The point is that Bookman’s essay this morning is just another pointless condemnation and attack like the rest of his media associates who hate Republicans.
Do we need another 4 years of 8.3% unemployment, debt in the statosphere of trillions, no budgets, economic paralysis, global humiliation, reduced credit rating, Obamcare that will further gut our treasury, a bloated government, a government run by criminals, tax cheats, union thugs, and left wing freaks. RIGHT!

Bookman’s gonna write some real salty pieces from now ’til November. And some voters with his sense of liberal righteousness will be swayed. Like Obama, he’s never run even a lemonade stand and like Obama he has never ever felt the heat from building a small business while dealing with government restraints; restraints that defeat some of the strongest willed. Some forget, but Hillary was pushing a mandate for employer-sponsored healthcare in 93-94. When asked about small businesses having a problem with affording the care, she said that if they couldn’t afford it they shouldn’t be in business. And at the same time, Ted Kennedy said that small businesses were bottom-feeders. I’ll never forget that and my vote will reflect that.

Interesting that the left is here bashing Ryan for the very same thing Bookman said was needed just a few days ago: Compromise.
So the lesson is this. Do not compromise-ever. Because when you do, and then you go back to your deeply held principles, the fact that you compromised will be used as a sledge hammer against you.
George H.W. Bush lived that lesson. He paid the price. (Read my lips).
Imagine if Ryan had just gone along with the debt ceiling increases last year.
Today, Bookman would be bashing him for now speaking out the ever increasing debt, and how Ryan had no right to now speak out against it.
If you want compromise in the future, you should choose NOT to attack those who have tried to in the past.

I learned an interesting thingy about oil and efficiency of oil companies….30 years ago plus, there was a 10-1 ratio of barrel price and gas price…ie when barrel price was $1..gas was .10 a gallon and so on…..if that same ratio applied today, at current barrel price of $95, we’d otherwise be paying $9.50 a gallon..factoid that gets lost amongst the pitiful energy policy of pushing energy at 13-17 cents per kilowat to .2 cents for oil….

Doom — “So the administration’s usual bullying tactics had no play in S&P’s reasoning for downgrading our debt? It would strain credulity to believe it didn’t.”
Maybe so, but it goes against the *publicly stated8 reasons that the rating agencies gave. Again, if you’ve got some evidence for your speculation, I’m certainly open to seeing it.
“However, it appears to me that it was the prudent thing to do, and had S&P not lowered the credit rating, one could charge them with dereliction of duty.”
One wishes they hadn’t been so derelict in the rating of MBSs and CDOs.
“The Obama Administration seemed to be using intimidation tactics in the media, going after the reputation of S&P as the Administration was attempting to defend themselves. It seems rather unfortunate that the US Treasury Secretary and the Obama Administration would use such tactics, and throw this debt rating downgrade into the media as a political football.”
Again, AFAICS, you’re speculating. But I’m still open to seeing evidence if you have any.

“So are you opining as Jay did also that the main reason for the debt downgrade was due to the arguing?”
Yes. And since that’s why the CRAs *said* they were doing it, I don’t see where you’re getting this other notion.
“Or do you think the actual debt itself may of had something to do with it? For example on the link I just posted S&P went back and forth over what the O administration said was questionable accounting regarding 2 trillion dollars. They were going back and forth about the debt itself- not the arguing that was going on between Ds and Rs.”
No, they were *clearly* speaking to the intransigence and arguing, and they *said so* in their public announcement.
“And for the record if anyone out there believes that the debt itself had little to do with the downgrade then I suppose they are living in a state of suspended disbelief.”

Dodd-Frank was supposed to address the derivitives market, the ratings agencies, and restore stability to the banking system while controlling systematic risk for the U.S. economy. What we got was another stack of hundreds of rules putting small financial service companies out of business, increasing costs and lowering access to credit for consumers, and ultimately concentrating fatal systematic risk for the economy into a handful of “too big to fail” firms. While you people assign blame for the housing crisis to Wall Street and the GOP, the GSE’s have moved from “implied guarantees” to explicit guarantees of the Federal government. In the meantime, FNMA/Freddie have hemorrhaged in exceess of $180 BILLION in losses since 2008. Obama’s solution: Let’s give homeowner’s who have defaulted on their mortgages $3000 a piece before the election. Government is just as responsible for the housing market bubble as Wall Street. Unlike the Democrats, I am more concerned about what we are going to do about it than assigning blame to Bush. By the way, 75% of U.S. mortgages are created by four giant institutions directly because of Dodd-Frank.

Both wars were and are badly led. Both wars were and are morally wrong, and sadly, a total waste of human life, the lives of our troops and the the lives of the people of these two countries. Our national security was never threatened by these countries. The plotters and executors of 9-11 came from Saudi Arabia and Pakistan (Osama Bin Laden’s home). Maybe you can explain why either war was necessary. Please be my guest. But for me and I think many people here and around the world, these two wars were and still are nothing but war for war’s sake, one more flimsy excuse to further enrich the arms manufacturers at incomprehensible cost in human life, injury, and destruction for all those directly involved. Billions in welfare for the defense contractors? – Great! Any type of welfare for the truly poor in America? – Outrageous! Socialism! No way!

A lie means knowing better than what you say AT THE PRECISE MOMENT YOU’RE SAYING IT. And that, ghost, is the difference between a lie and an honest mistake.
And besides, since we give our presidents 6 months to a year to get their policies in place and working, President Obama has been adding jobs to our economy for the last 29 months from the time his got in place.
Everything else that came before – the crash of the economy and all the jobs lost – were straight up Republican caused with George W. Bush, and if you try to tell me it wasn’t their fault, well, that would be the perfect example of a lie! Got it now, ghost?

Bottom line, Obama will not do anything to improve our economy and lessen unemployment…because he has no idea how to do it. Romney, who has successfully run businesses his entire life knows how to do this and will do this. Ryan, is the numbers/math guy who can apply our revenue to lessen the 16 trillion dollar debt we face. Obama will just add another 5-10 trillion in another term.
The choice is clear. All the other issues are just a distraction for the real problems we face as a nation. Vote Romney in Nov.

Very true. I believe that person would be the Democratic congressman John Spratt for the period of time that president Obama went unchecked and the budget went out of control.
But of course you were trying to mislead by implying that Ryan has been chairman of the budget committee overseeing this massive growth in government spending when in fact he has been fighting against it since the Republicans took over the house.

The Big Lie as a propaganda technique: (quoted from Wikipedia article)
“The phrase was also used in a report prepared during the war by the United States Office of Strategic Services in describing Hitler’s psychological profile:[5][6]
His primary rules were: never allow the public to cool off; never admit a fault or wrong; never concede that there may be some good in your enemy; never leave room for alternatives; never accept blame; concentrate on one enemy at a time and blame him for everything that goes wrong; people will believe a big lie sooner than a little one; and if you repeat it frequently enough people will sooner or later believe it.[7]“

joe, your belief that Romney knows how to run a business and that this is what is needed in a leader is kind of touching, but completely misguided.
What exactly do you think Romney’s business “success” consists of? Who was it successful FOR? Do you realize that his “success” consisted of funneling vast sums into the pockets of Mr. Romney and his associated usually at the expense of workers, and on the basis of very dodgy tax schemes? Besides, even if we grant that Romney has a certain business acumen, what in the world does that have to do with leading a country?

Maybe someone can explain to me why when the Dems and the Repubs can’t come to an agreement it is the Repubs that won’t compromise. Isn’t it equally incumbant on the Dems to compromise? And why is it that historically when they do compromise it seems like the Dems get to spend on what they want and the Repubs get to spend on what they want. The taxpayers never seem to be represented in these wonderful compromises over the past 50 years.

The claims of Romney as a vulture capitalist and gutting any number of companies is simply a political ruse to assign victimhood to whatever is the middle class.
Bain’s record of bankrupcies to total investments is on line with average business failures…this guy from the steel company who desparately attempts without success to legitimately link his wives death to plant shutdown is merely a puppet without factual connection.
In fact, Bain likely kept the company going a few years longer than it should otherwise…investors probably took a bath on that aspect of that particular fund.

A little Economics 101 for the private sector challenged Jay and his lemmings. The U.S. was downgraded because we are $15,000,000,000,000+ in debt – not because of the so called debt ceiling crisis. Downgrades are rated on a countries likely chance to repay the debt and it’s lack of collateral. We have NO collateral other than the millions of acres of land owned by the Fed government but will never be sold because #1) environmental wackos lock on the Dems and #2) the damage it would do to the current real estate depression by flooding the market with even more product to sell. The lack of confidence by Moodys, A.M. Best Weiss Research, etc. that Obama and Congress will restrain their run away spending and reduce the debt is very unlikely based on past history. They also know Obama Care is a huge Ponzi scheme that will be the final straw to bankrupting America. That is why our bonds were downgraded.

The national debt is now the private debt turned into government debt by bailing out the banks. When we bail out the banks we paid off all the bad decision of our private sector to over buy houses, unpaid credit cards, we picked up that entire debt. Not only are we bailing out the banks we are bailing out the companies that received money from those bad loans. They sold product to the homeless and poor took their money and were never liable, they created a market where there was no market in America, this money shifted to the rich as booked profit was kept by the rich and paid for eventually by the government bailing out the banks. It is a Ponzi scheme participated in by the Bush administration and laid off on the Obama administration by current Republicans.

A little History 101 for the factually-challenged. The credit rating agencies SPECIFICALLY STATED that their downgrade actions were NOT taken due to the amount of debt, but because they doubted that Congress and the President were capable of continuing to service the debt in an efficient and timely manner — SPECIFICALLY BECAUSE they were arguing over an increase in the debt ceiling.
The credit rating agencies agree with us, not you. And I suspect they’re more in tune with economic matters than you are.

1. My granddaddy never had much money but he worked hard and honestly for a living and put food on the table.
2. My granddaddy was a worthless insurance agent that tried to cheat everybody he met and run around with his fat hanging from a pair of speedos. And oh yes, he was a Alabama fan.
I don’t know about you, but I know what will be said about me.

jay….Likewise, when Ryan accused Obama of “raiding” Medicare of $716 billion, he failed to note that in his House budget that made him famous, he too diverted $716 billion from Medicare. Instead of using it to extend health care to millions of uninsured Americans, he used it to finance more tax cuts for the wealthy. A difference in prioirities, I suppose.

Oscar – if everyone agrees we need to cut spending, then why do the dems use that as a bargaining chip. i.e. both want to cut spending, Dem wants to raise some taxes, Rep wants to raise no taxes. Then why don’t they cut spending if both agree? The truth is that Dems will only agree to cut spending (really just the rate of increase in spending) if they get tax increases. All the while, we are speeding toward the cliff of financial meltdown. But Jay and the mainstream media paint this as intractable republicans. Both sides are somewhat intractable. Of course maybe when you are right you should be firm in your position.

My bad..
Bain did indeed saddle this company with debt and reaped impressive profits….the original investment was between 8 and 24 million depending on who you asked and they clearly made less than typical profit…the fees i’m finding were closer to $4.5 million but they also made total return of between 12 and 18 million..hard to get the actual numbers but I concede my contempt prior to investigation…
Still most of PE and Venture deals, especially in Bains case, a very small percentage of total dealflow, were more favorable in terms of outcomes for workers et al..

Couple of funny notes on the day after…..
1) It is laughable to see the liberals among us touting a FOXNews “article” that challenges some of Ryan’s speech. The attempt to misrepresent is yet again from LIBERALS who are pointing to an OPINION piece. It would be as silly as a conservative opinion piece published on MSNBC & pointed to as evidence the “even MSNBC believes” something.
2) Liberals are being quick to challenge Ryan for “lying” and “blaming” Obama for the GM plant that closed in his hometown. He did neither. He said that Obama visited in 2008 and predicted that the plant would remain open for “100 years”, had subsequently closed, & was still empty today. Those are FACTS. The other facts are that Obama was wrong in his prediction (WAY WRONG on the order of the plant actually didn’t even stay open until he took office) and nothing in Obama’s term gives evidence that things are improving.

11:40 a.m. If the shoe fits wear it. Thank You! That’s exactly what I just said. The bonds (debt) were downgraded because of the LACK of confidence that the U.S. can: #1) repay the debt (if it was $15 instead of $15 + TRILLION there would be no lack of confidence -so common sense, lacking in brain dead zombies, says that the amount of debt is the #1 reason for the downgrade.) and #2) there is no WILL for the Prez or Congress to reduce the debt or change out of control spending. When there is doubt bonds will be repaid and there is a lack of collateral to cover the loss then bonds are downgraded. If the rating services knowingly fail to downgrade when the environment calls for a downgrade they will be in danger of massive law suits and investigations and fines from the Fed gub’ment. Ironically Obama sent in the pencil pushers to intimidate the rating services because he did not appreciate the downgrade on his watch which was very bad PR for him. Knowing that Obama would retaliate put the rating services under a lot of pressure but not acting would have left them vulnerable to being fined, sued, incarcerated and put out of business. The rating services do not take the downgrading of the U.S. lightly thus showing the seriousness of our debt situation. Doubt if dead brain zombies are knowledgeable of how the world wide market works better than me as I do have a Masters in Finance and have been investing in the market for years. Got check the market now so see youze latter.

S. Ray — “…we and the banks would have been much better served if they simply gave a trillion to homeowners to continue to make mortgage payments…”
I actually suggested something very much like this on another discussion board back in 2008-2009. I thought it might work something like this:
Use the bailout money to ‘buy out’ existing risky mortgages. Require the homebuyers to to take on a new mortgage with new, favorable terms (for example, a longer term). When the buyers eventually sell, the government gets all of the appreciation (if any), but the buyers are shielded from loss (the government absorbs the downside) if they lose money on the house or go bankrupt.
Result: bad mortgages get off banks’ books and they get paid. Homebuyers don’t automatically lose their houses (though some might have anyway in the ensuing job market crash) and are insulated from loss of their investment in the home. The government gets paid back for the mortgages and gets to keep any upside in the investment.
THEN come the investigations and prosecutions of homebuyers and mortgage sellers who fudged numbers and filed false documents. With jail time, please.

An infinitely more intelligent and ethical question is will you Bush devotees ever acknowledge the gawd awful, cataclysmic, across the board, epic, serial disasters that he left us to fix?
Of course not!
Thousands of dead GIs, all KIA’d needlessly. Tens of thousands more maimed and broken. Countless American families ruined so the chickenhawks could feel good about themselves.
Trillions of dollars “missing” and wasted in that botched invasion and occupation based on lies, deceit and shameless self-serving Halliburton interests. Using the Us Constitution to wipe his ass. (Ask all of the Republican lawyers in the ABA about it. Or don’t.)
The disgrace of getting the United States of America added to the list of countries that torture. For the first time ever.
Illegal spying on American citizens.
Throwing away the single most sacred American liberty ever devised – habeus corpus.
And then of course there was that itsy bitsy little problem in September 2008. $10,000,000,000,000.00 “disappeared”. Basically overnight. By the sleaziest, most unapologetic criminals in the nation’s long history. Economic devastation and despair not seen in this country in nearly a hundred years. MASSIVE unemployment and underemploymet. RECORD bankruptcies and foreclosures. Entire industries shipped overseas. Rising poverty and fear.
And though, you desperately want to sweep ALL of it under the nearest rug you can find forever, tough t*tties, I will never let you.
And even worse. You are so stubborn and foolish that you Party First, America Second boys are dead set upon trying to get George Willard Bush right back into office so that the horrifically incompetent and immoral neocons can do it all over again.

I’m an independent voter, and I cast a leery eye to the extremes of both sides. I also remain undecided about who to vote for in November. With that said, Paul Ryan is a very attractive, young and, no doubt, energetic voice for the republican party. He is held in relatively high esteem by the conservative movement as a deficit hawk and someone with a grand plan to solve our nation’s fiscal ills. The problem with Mr. Ryan is that when he was sworn into Congress in January 1999, he came into a fiscal surplus. Since Mr. Ryan has been in office, he has voted for the Bush tax cuts without any offsetting spending reductions; he voted for an unfunded ware in Afghanistan; he voted for an unfunded war in Iraq; he voted for an unfunded prescription plan; he voted for TARP. Each of these votes has contributed to most of the deficit we are experiencing today, yet I have not heard Mr. Ryan acknowledge his responsibility for contributing to our current state, nor have I heard any conservative point out Mr. Ryan’s role with the current deficit. Everyone seems to think he has a brilliant plan to fix it. I’m just not convinced. I may end up voting for Romney/Ryan, but I may not either. Are we growing our economy as much as I would like to see now? No! But we are in a better place now then we were four years ago. The stock market is nearly double where it was at its worst; we are growing jobs, meager as it may be, but a hell of a lot better than losing 800,000 jobs a month under Bush. Is that enough for me to vote for Obama? I am still thinking it over. But none of us should idly allow Mr. Ryan to come across as some budget savior. He isn’t!

And what do have to look forward to when the supreme leader steps to the mike? He will not need a teleprompter for this one – “I have blown everything up, but that Romney is a bad guy, so vote for me.”
Then they will have the tribute to all 57 states by N. Pelosi, a personal finance seminar by C. Rangel, the Obama Energy Plan Symposium and tire gauge demonstration, the “Free Gov. Blagoyovich ” rally, and finally stupid pet tricks by J. Biden. Can’t wait.
