As GOP convention kicks off, Obama still favorite

With the 2012 Republican Convention about to open its doors, here’s how the race shapes up at the moment, based on RealClearPolitics’ poll average:

polling

In other words, too close to call. The investors at Intrade still make Obama the favorite, with 55.8 percent of dollars invested favoring the incumbent and 43.7 percent predicting a Romney victory. At fivethirtyeight.com, Nate Silver predicts a 2.4 percentage point margin for Obama come Nov. 6, with a 69.3 percent chance of an Obama re-election.

And according to Gallup, 58 percent of Americans believe Obama will be re-elected, compared to 36 percent who predict a Romney victory. Among Democrats, 86 percent predict victory for Obama, while Republicans are less confident in their champion, with just 65 percent predicting that it will be Romney raising his hand to take the oath of office in January.

Still a long way to go, including debates. But at this point Obama is showing strength, especially considering how poorly he should be doing as predicted by models that focus solely on the economy.

Jay, why do you and other media lie about the economy? This is a Goldilocks economy of not too hot for inflation and not to cold for recession, not even one quarter of negative growth. Look at the facts.

Manufacturing Employment

Obama increase 532,000 since 1/2010
Last Republican Administration lost 4,560,000 in 8years.
Clinton increase 321,000 in 8 years.
Second to last Republican Administration lost 1,267,000 in 4 years.
Can somebody in the media say “outsourcing anti-American anti-union Republicans”

What will a new Republican Administration do differently from the last one?

Total Nonfarm Employment

Obama increase last month 163,000 is not double or triple, but more than 14 times greater than last Republican Administration’s average

Since 2/2010 increase of 4,001,000 employees

Last Republican Administration 1,095,000 / 8 years = 136,875 / yr or 11,406 / mo. (all government employees for example Department of Homeland Security)

Clinton 22,740,000 / 8 years = 2,842,500 / yr or 236,875 / mo.
Carter 2,584,000 / yr or 215,400 / mo.

I don’t think the DNC and Obama’s campaign management see it quite the same way. I bet they’re very concerned that their strategy of destroying Romney’s candidacy over the last 5 months before the Republican convention failed. They thought they had another opportunity a few weeks ago when Romney selected Ryan. They felt certain they could launch a mediscare attack against Ryan’s plan and that failed. In fact a recent ABC poll shows most trusting Romney/Ryan over Democrats with handling Medicare and that’s a huge shift. The race is neck and neck with the Dems using up their firepower in failed attempts to gain campaign traction. Should Romney/Ryan get a post convention bump in the polls and in a few weeks after the convention show some building campaign momentum along with Romney doing well in the debates I think Obama will probably lose reelection.

The incumbent always has the edge in most any presidential election. At this point, Bozo should be much further ahead than he is to be sure of a win. One of the best predictors so far has been that Univ of Colo group that predicts presidential elections, mainly based on economic predictions and the unemployment rate. They have been right in every prediction, since 1980. They predict that Romney will get 320 electoral votes and carry most of the swing states. We shall see, libs, we shall see.

K71 — “What is it about this buffoon that enamors his voter base?”

He’s not kissing the rear ends of the putative ‘job creators,’ who aren’t actually creating any jobs.

“I can see the ones who get a check every month for not doing much for it. They don’t want their gravy train to melt away. But seemingly intelligent people, like many on this blog, seem to have blinders on or they are just ignoring the obvious.”

From where I’m standing, *you’re* ignoring the obvious.

“We are broke. Our GDP is nearing our debt.”

How come deficit spending under Bush never seemed to bother Republicans? Didn’t Dick Cheney say that “deficits don’t matter,” or was that someone wearing a mask that said that? Why is it that the MOMENT a Democrat got elected, the GOP largely got religion on debt and deficits, but up until that point, they were all for spending like a shipful of drunken sailors on liberty in a foreign port?

“We have over 20M people who are still out of work.”

Were you aware that the labor force shrinkage *began* under President Bush?

“Our growth is stalled at the lowest it has been in decades.”

Maybe if Congress spent some time working on helpful legislation instead of voting to repeal the ACA thirty-some times, then we could get some recovery going. Just sayin’.

“And blaming Bush is just not going to cut it anymore.”

You’re an intelligent and educated man, which makes it amazing to me that you can’t seem to recognize that many of the problems you’re complaining about — particularly the economic and employment-related ones — EXISTED and/or STARTED under President Bush, If you’re going to steadfastly refuse to recognize and/or admit that, then you need not wonder why Democrats are being so obstinate on this point. It’s because Republicans have been obstinate on this point for the last four years.

“This clown owns this economy, lock stock and barrel.”

Is that why Republicans keep complaining about the Clinton recession and the Carter ‘malaise?’

“I just, for the life of me, cannot see why all of you are willing to stick with such a loser.”

Because your guy is worse and will make the situation worse.

“Is your ideology that prevalent?”

No. See above.

“Is it because you want to give him another chance to make it right? Why???”

It’s because we don’t want the Republicans to have another chance to drive the middle and lower class into the poorhouse. Y’all did an AMAZINGLY spitty job with the economy from 2001-2009, and from what Romney’s said, released and published, he’s going to go right back to the same road Bush was on. It’s true that Obama hasn’t done a very good job with the economy, but given that he’s largely been working with Congress’ backing, he’s gotten a lot more done than I thought he would.

If y’all can’t GTFO the way in Congress and HELP the President HELP the country, then I see no reason whatsoever why y’all deserve my time, my effort, my donations or my vote.

kayaker, to answer your question as a “seemingly intelligent person,” I will vote for Obama because the Republicans talk fiscal responsibility but never quite seem to deliver. “Deficits don’t matter,” to quote Dick Chaney during the Bush administration. President Bush also started two wars and instituted a tax cut at the same time, which is not fiscally responsible at all. Jobs got worse during Bush — in number and quality. And Bush pushed that Medicare drug benefit through, unfunded. And supported TARP to bail out his bank buddies. So Republicans talk one thing, do another.

In the meantime, they also are anti-people — anti-women, anti-gay, anti-innocent bystanders, anti-struggling working poor, anti-soldiers, anti-union, anti-employee, anti-sick person, anti-the air we breathe and the water we drink. People are just collateral damage in their fight for more money and power for the already rich and powerful.

If the Republicans really were fiscally responsible and if they did not work so hard to appeal to people’s worst fears and prejudices, I might be able to vote for one.

But as it stands — no way.

regardless of what side you’re on, what I believe to be most critical with Jay’s chart is the fact that an incumbent POTUS allegedly has such a scant lead (wonder what the margin of error is). Essentially, for those who haven’t taken and understood a statistics class, the election is a toss up. Dems, if BHO is so great, why aren’t is numbers better? Cons, if Romney is truly the answer, why are his numbers higher? Answer – we in the middle of the political arena are hosed yet again. As has been pointed out already, this was President Bush’s argument for election in 2004. Pray tell, for whom did YOU vote in 2004?

“If DEMS take control of both houses and Romney wins, I would think the obstructionist label would simply move from red to blue..thoughts?”

It’s certainly possible, but you won’t see me endorsing such behavior. That said, Democratic Congresses have been *far less* obstructionist to Republican Presidents than vice-versa. For example, the number of vacant Federal judgeships has almost doubled from the Bush administration to Obama’s. So whatever happened to the Republican battle-cry of a few years ago — that the President’s nominees deserved ‘an up or down vote?’

A few weeks ago when Jay Bookman did on of his posts claiming Obama was clearly ahead, I had brought up that astute observers of how early presidential polling tends to substantially skew Democratic and of past presidential elections could see that the election would be very likely trending to Romney and that the polling results showing Obama ahead by the margins it showed were actually consistent with Romney really being ahead.

I had also brought up how the behavior of both the Obama and Romney campaigns wwere consistent with Obama really being the one who was behind. Obama Campaign was desperately flailing around burning through money to run ads attacking Romney like there was no tomorrow, whereas Romney was content to just lay back and absorb the blows.

I think the election is Romney’s to win. The only way Obama can go up at this point is for Romney to self-destruct, whereas there is tremendous up-side potential for Romney. Romney has absorbed a few hundred million dollars of negative advertising from Obama and Democratic Party support groups which attempted to smear and character assassinate him. As well as much of the msm lackeys doing their part to create the narrative of distractions that Obama wanted, yet Romney is pretty much even in the polls with Obama, with Obama being a few points below 50%.

It will become increasingly difficult for Obama and his msm lackeys to continue the campaign of distractions. As such, it’s likely that the below 50% that Obama is at is a stubborn ceiling he will have a very hard time getting above.

Obama is the known quantity and a majority of voters are looking for an excuse to vote for a new president. Which is why I think if Romney gives a good convention speech and performs well in the upcoming debates, that Obama will substantailly fade as Election Day approaches. I could be wrong, but I think the current election will most resemble the dynamic of the 1980 election.

BIG bump for Obama in the latest collective polling analysis:

http://www.electoral-vote.com/

That’s a tough row to hoe for Romney. To win, he’d have to take Florida and any three of VA – WI – OH – MI. If he doesn’t take FL, then he has to take ALL of VA – WI – OH – MI and either NV or CO. And he’d have to accomplish that *without* losing any states he’s already got (and both IA and NC are a little shaky).

In the final analysis, it’s the EVs that tell the tale. And right now, they’re telling Romney to get his rear in gear.

A man is what a man does. Compare the two. The only conclusion is Romney.

Polls are designed to give a predetermined outcome. Either by the contorted questions asked and/or the affiliation of the person being asked. The more educated here will say no, point to statistical analysis, etc., but if you ask mostly Democrats you will get a Democrat outcome.

This election is a test of Americans’ BS filter. If most work, Romney will win. If not, Obama. After all, Romney is up against the Democratic party and most media.

we’ve spent over $1.2 Trillion more than we’ve received

We’ve got unfunded liabilities of over $1 million per tax payer
we have over 12 1/2 million folks unemployed and over 23 million either unemployed or underemployed

I thought that it was going to be a pretty close election until last night while surfing the web, I read some of Debbie Do Right’s posts. If she represents the Obama mainstream, then Romney will win in a landslide. With regular gas approaching $4 per gallon because of the hurricane, it is a good thing that we had the foresight to build an alternative pipeline from Canada so that we could diversify our refining capabilites. Oh that’s right, we are still waiting on Obama’s alternative energy programs to kick in. Last month the annointed one directed that 16,000,000 acres of public park land be set aside for solar panel farms. And this week, Mom and Pop businesses have been retroactively fined up to 250% for buying Chinese solar panels. So U.S. citizens are being penalized for not supporting Obama energy department companies owned by bundlers who cannot produce a market competitive product. Therefore, taxpayers have to subsidize this energy by paying artificially inflated prices in a recession.Just look at Iowa wind energy subsidies. Without $billions of Federal taxpayer subsidies, wind energy simply does not work according to the most recent Alliant quarterly report.. And to add insult to injury, the Obama administration is creating protectionist legislation to discourage international trade. We need to encourage international growth and trade to get out of the recession, not become more dependent on Federal government programs that can’t survive without tax payer money.. As more Americans become aware of Obama policies like the public land give away, we will get coalitions of diverse special interest groups like the Sierra Club and the Tea Party joining to protest policies much like we saw in the Atlanta TSPLOST debates. One thing is for sure, if Obama is re-elected, you can count on your power bill tripling because of EPA regulations and unrealistic energy policies.

Obama promised to cooperate with congress if reelected–not like last time with his classy *the election is over John* and *I won Eric* and continual trash talking and smearing conservatives. I would be willing to struggle through 4 more years of recession/depression if there is a republican House and they refuse to cooperate. I am probably more confident of an Obama win than are some of his supporters here, who are already preparing excuses if he should lose. Thomas (Newsweek) and Halperin (Time) have conceded Obama’s media advantage and they are by no means republican supporters.

But hey you dont really want to discuss this honestly because then you might have to admit the truth about the tax cut failures, Bush stimulus, and off the book wars and the responsibility of govt.

Letting the Bush tax cuts expire alone raises/saves over $1 Trillion in the next 10 years.

This from cnnmoney.com:

The S&P/Case-Shiller national home price index, which covers more than 80% of the housing market in the United States, climbed 6.9% in the three months ended June 30 compared to the first three months of 2012.

“We seem to be witnessing exactly what we needed for a sustained recovery; monthly increases coupled with improving annual rates of change,” said David Blitzer, a spokesman for S&P, in a statement. “The market may have finally turned around.”

And a few months later their checks will stop coming and I’ll finally be able to find somebody to clear the brush in the back of the trailer for, say, $1.50 per hour.

All these polls don’t mean nothing. While you’ve been taking them we’ve been cleaning out the voting lists. It won’t be possible to get rid of all the librul voters but we’ll go a pretty far way.

Agree with the confusion about baseline polling data..seems to me the best base is registered voters because “likely voters” from a statistics stand point, leaves too much subjective room as to broaden the margin of error that is not accounted for in the latter measure…

It’s in your face, liberals. This country is has never, ever, been worse off than during your administration. What’s the matter with you people?

You put this inexperienced community organizer in the WH and surrounded him with people like you. The end result of your social experiment is a paralyzed economy, unemployment of 8.3 percent, the private sector uncertain of the future, the country’s credit rating down graded, the country’s global image tarnished, run away debt at $16 trillion dollars and growing every year, a bigger government, a government run by union thugs, Black Panther supporters, tax cheats, anarchist supporters, and congressional looters. A mixed bag of socialists, Marxists, and left wing kooks.

Based on your support for this elected social experiment and your appetite for 4 more years of American demise, the choice is clear in November. The lines are drawn.

You represent the enemy within this country and have been responsible for all that has happened. The very idea of relishing the carnage that you put into motion is hateful and down right Un-American. I don’t think that the American people will be so stupid as to buy into your agenda this fall.

Hope & Change was a joke, subsequently seen as a joke, and will always stand for your attempt to fool America. With that said, let the serenade of those who voted for Obama begin with their “progressive” carping. I certainly don’t expect to change your convoluted thinking, but do enjoy calling you out for what you are…misguided, naive, government sheep, and eternal hippies.

If Jesus were a Republican:

The Lazy Paralytic
…. The disciples had never seen Jesus so angry about his possessions. He continued, “This house is my life. And the roof is the best part.” The disciples fell silent. 7. “It’s bad enough that you trash my private property, now you want me to heal you?” said Jesus, “And did you not see the stone walls around this house?” “Yes,” said the man’s friends. “Are these not the stone walls common to the towns and villages of Galilee?” 8. “No,” Jesus answered. “This is a gated community. How did you get in?” The man’s friends grew silent. 9. Then Jesus turned and said to the paralytic, “Besides, can’t you take care of your own health problems? I’m sure that your family can care for you, or maybe the synagogue can help out.” 10. “No, Lord,” answered the man’s friends. “There is no one. His injuries are too severe. To whom else can we go?” 11. “Well, not me,” said Jesus. “What would happen if I provided access to free health care for everyone? That would mean that people would not only get lazy and entitled, but they would take advantage of the system. 12. Besides, look at me: I’m healthy. And you know why? Because I worked hard for my money, and took care of myself.” The paralyzed man then grew sad and he addressed Jesus. “But I did work, Lord,” said the paralytic. “Until an accident rendered me paralyzed.” “Yes,” said the man’s friends. “He worked very hard.” 13. “Well,” said Jesus, “That’s just part of life, isn’t it?” “Then what am I to do, Lord?” said the paralytic. “I don’t know. Why don’t you sell your mat?” 14. All in the crowd then grew sad. “Actually, you know what you can do?” said Jesus. “You can reimburse me for my roof. Or I’ll sue you.” And all were amazed. 15. “We have never seen anything like this,” said the crowd.

Keep – No – informed something you should try. If you don’t let all of the Bush/Obama (let’s be honest, they are as much his as Bush’s now that he kept them when he had the super majority) tax cuts expire, the effect is minimal. The key to revenue growth is to have more participation (the proposals to let the cuts expire for only the upper level income taxpayers is dishonest and reduces the impact by 2/3’s). The debt belongs to all of us, Democrat as well as Republican, black or white, working or not.

Romney believes that he needs 61% of the white vote to win….and he’s pulling out all of the GOP-induced racial animus in order to scare the white populace into voting for him!!

Republicans have been pulling this trick since the 60’s; Kevin Phillips, the deviser of Nixon’s “Southern Strategy” plainly said that black people had NO PLACE in the GOP….even though black people helped FOUND the GOP!! An interesting dynamic…….

3- Does he really have any convictions? He has changed his position on about every issue there is.
4- Why did his company make millions while shutting down plants? Reckon he could have spared some to help the displaced workers?
5- His tax returns have an ugly side he is deathly afraid of us seeing.
6- How did he amass an IRA of 20-100 million?
7- Why does he want to eliminate Capital Gains taxes? Is he looking for a 0% tax rate for himself and friends.?
8- If you think he is interested in the well being of the rank and file American, you’re missing the mark. He only wants the title and $ associated with it.

If a Republican is a vegetarian, he doesn’t eat meat.
If a Democrat is a vegetarian, he wants all meat products banned for everyone.

Democrats demand that those they don’t like be shut down.

If a Republican is a non-believer, he doesn’t go to church.
A Democrat non-believer wants any mention of God and religion silenced.

Republicans wanted to ratify it anyway, but they were willing to kill it if necessary to protect the Bush tax cuts. In other words, tax cuts for the wealthy came before national security.

It found, to no one’s surprise, that all of the speeders were zapped with radar guns at close to 400yds out. At this distance, it was impossible to see who was driving or to determine what ethnic group they belonged to. Turns out that more black speeders were stopped because more blacks were speeding. Duh.

JHM, in fact, it is the Declaration of Independence; which is NOT ‘law’ that…declares, “…all Men are created equal, and that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights.” I don’t know that women are considered part of this; but it seems to me that ALL MEN includes Hispanics, African-Americans, homosexuals, and even Muslims. in addition; the Declaration makes no distinction between the Judeo-Christian “creator” and any other “creator”, which means those who recognize or defer to Wiccan creator, the Muslim creator, or even the secular humanist “creator” (aka the Big Bang)are endowed with the very same inalienable rights as white Christians.

0311 — “We “assert” our rights against government because they were already there as given by our Creator.”

Fortunately, there’s no creator or jesus in the Constitution. Ergo, no creator or jesus in our government.

“I “man” makes up the rights …………. the we get entities like Nazi Germany.”

And when man’s version of god makes the rules, we get atrocities like the Crusades and the Spanish Inquisition. Oh, yes, and entities like the Taliban.

“And if you disagree with me that’s fine ……………… it just illuminates the difference between you and me.”

Yes. My statements are based on fact. Yours are based on belief.

No….the demographic breakdown that was transmitted states this: this election will be based on demographic trends because this is a segmented campaign. Romney needs to get a higher percentage of Hispanic votes (38%) than McCain did to counteract a possible loss of white voters….or Romney needs to get 61% of the WHITE vote to counteract the loss of Hispanic voters. John Boehner has already come out to say that he’s hoping that blacks and Hispanics don’t turn out to vote!! Are the voter-ID laws part of the disenfranchisement process that the Republicans are mastering this time???

Very true. Too bad we are not in many cases supporting better candidates as a whole, but the “better candidate for the principles we believe in.”

Seems like a subtle difference on paper, but can be a vast difference in reality. That goes for both D and R.

We need a viable 3rd and even 4th party to push the lethargic Ds and Rs.

Warren Buffett is a national treasure and a very ethical businessman imo. Nonetheless, Buffett has a net worth near 200 times greater than the net worth of Romney. Yet, Romney apparently pays a masively higher percentage of wealth in income taxes than Buffett? How can that be? Well, for one thing, Buffett avoids paying much in income taxes relative to his wealth because he ensures that a relatively very very tiny share of his massive wealth is actually ever realized as income. Most of his wealth is tied up in Berkshire Hathaway stock. Berkshire does not pay a dividend and Buffettt never sells any of his Berkshire stock holdings. So Buffett is able to take maximum advantage of compounding since near 100% of his wealth escapes being subject to income taxes.

A very wise man once said this to me.

There is nothing particularly evil or bad about the German people that caused the Nazis to rise in their country. And there is nothing so good or special about anyone else — including Americans — that a similar thing couldn’t happen to them as well. We must all be ever watchful for signs of intolerance and repression in order to guard against that sort of thing happening in our own societies.

Even though it’s against the law, lobbyists are throwing parties for members of Congress at the Republican National Convention, NBC News reports.

The 2007 Honest Leadership and Open Government Act prohibits lawmakers from attending convention parties that are “directly paid for by a registered lobbyist” or “a private entity that retains or employs such a registered lobbyist.” Here’s the loophole: As long as lobbyists and their employers do not directly pay for the party, it’s a free-for-all.

So lobbyists are creating separate consulting firms to throw parties on their behalf. These consulting firms are then selling party sponsorships to the lobbyists’ corporate clients, so the events still offer an opportunity for corporations to get cozy with lawmakers.

Furthermore to the moron that made that asinine statement about choosing abortion as birth control let me say this. Abortion is not something I personally will ever choose. But the choice I can make is to use birth control to choose the point in time that I want to have my children and Rick Snatorum flat out said he would take that choice away from every woman in America. Republicans advocate too many policies that actually promote the very things they want to eliminate. Deny a woman birth control and what do you get? Again I say when women are denied the right to control their own bodies like that we should tell men to do it with each other because they won’t get it from us.

After all, God sent two hurricanes during the 2008 convention, and republicans did not get the message that God wants us to care for the least of us. I don’t normally preach, but the coincidences are very strong.
Personally, I worry about the safety of the republican platform. After all, if Chris Christy, Mike Huckabee, and Dick Morris all get on the speaking platform at the same, it might exceed the design capacity for both ego and weight. It will not be a pretty picture.

These conventions are nothing more than partisan preaching to the choir. Does anybody other than the fans of each party even watch these things. I know I have better things to do.

I already know who wants to check my papers and treat me like I don’t belong here. All the speeches in the world don’t erase laws that get passed in certain states controlled by certain parties. After 9/11 it seems a tidal wave of pent up hate got unleashed in this country and directed at a heck of a lot of people that are just as good an American and love this country just as much as the wingnuts and haters profess to. I want the America prior to 9/11 back. It was a much nicer country then.

You must think that this is some sort of conspiracy against black drivers. Of course, you can ignore that nearly half of the male prison population in this country is black and they only represent about 6% of the population mix. Police officers, both black and white, gravitate to where the potential perps are. It it walks like a duck……

So, if we’re supposed to go off of stereotypes and sh*t like that, explain to me why we should turn the country over to a White man who made his money on Wall Street? Aren’t White men in suits from Wall Street all crooked and above the law when it comes to what they can get away with. Why break the rules when you can pay somebody to change them.

It seems to me that there are two views on the economy. I think everyone agrees that deficits DO matter, and the the deficit (and the debt) are too high.

So, do we grow the economy to the point where it can withstand the needed cuts, or do we cut first and let the chips fall where they may?

I personally believe the prudent course is to strengthen the economy first, as I believe immediate cuts are likely to cause the economy to take a dump. Any thoughtful comments in opposition are welcome.

At the time the Declaration of Independence was written, the term “all Men” did not include the people who you say it was. It was basically White male land owners. Why do you think the “Three-Fifth’s Compromise” ended up in the Constitution? Blacks were not considered Men and Hispanics were not even thought of in the context of this country.

daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn … and David Brooks puts the boot in:

Mitt Romney was born on March 12, 1947, in Ohio, Florida, Michigan, Virginia and several other swing states. He emerged, hair first, believing in America, and especially its national parks. He was given the name Mitt, after the Roman god of mutual funds, and launched into the world with the lofty expectation that he would someday become the Arrow shirt man.

(snip)

After his governorship, Romney suffered through a midlife crisis, during which he became a social conservative. This prepared the way for his presidential run. He barely won the 2012 Republican primaries after a grueling nine-month campaign, running unopposed. At the convention, where his Secret Service nickname is Mannequin, Romney will talk about his real-life record: successful business leader, superb family man, effective governor, devoted community leader and prudent decision-maker. If elected, he promises to bring all Americans together and make them feel inferior.

@ USinUK, profitability of larger corporations does not define the entire US economic picture. Here is a pretty good synopsis of the situation.

http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2011/08/01/companies-near-record-profits-amid-high-unemployment/

A few excerpts:
“In July, corporate giants such as 3M, Caterpillar, Goodyear, Microsoft and Apple reported all-time high revenues in the second quarter of 2011, though the stock market still slumped amid fears of an economic slowdown and a possible government default.”

“The prosperity of large corporations may seem surprising at a time when many indicators show profound weakness in the world’s largest economy.

The US unemployment rate stands at 9.2 percent, and the government last week said growth in the second quarter was a feeble 1.3 percent, far below economists’ expectations.

But analysts say US corporations are doing well in part because they slashed costs during the recession, laying off workers and reining in spending on plants and equipment, which boosted profit margins.”

“One reason that companies are holding so much cash — and not spending it on investments or hiring new workers — is that they are worried about the shaky economic situation in the United States and Europe.”

“Another notable result from the latest round of earnings reports is that many US companies are showing their best results in fast-growing markets such as Asia and Latin America rather than at home.”

Darn that Fox News!

Health care is the only sector of the economy still thriving (unless you want to count gold & precious metals) and it is being supported by massive gub’ment spending of our tax dollars which will soon end due to the fact that there are now insufficient funds in the several trillion dollar range. The checks will keep coming but the banks won’t cash them due to “insufficient funds”. Thus the greatest bubble in world history is about to burst.

I was listening to a discussion of the Medicare dilemma this morning on Morning Joe. Larry Kudlow was there in his Brooks Brothers outfit making comments like, “we are going to have to raise the retirement age to 67, 68, or 70.” Larry Kudlow is constantly harping on the onerous federal government intruding into business and keeping them down. So I wonder if Larry understands what an aging workforce does to business? Larry loves the status quo, employer-based health insurance model. The caveat is that the older the workforce, the more expensive it is for business to cover their employees. Many businesses would like to hire younger employees with new ideas but can’t because they have an aging workforce that won’t retire. Businesses can’t dismiss their aging workforce en masse as that puts them at risk for age discrimination lawsuits. When businesses offer big retirement package incentives to all of their retirement age workers, they have to take a huge charge on their earnings. That hurts them financially. So, Larry, please tell me why it’s better for business to bear the burden of the elderly?

@USinUK. Oh yeah, if we could just cut CEO compensation all our troubles would be over! You do realize that the primary goal of any private business is not to maximize employment but to maximize profits for its owners or shareholders. If they can do that by investing in expansion then they will do so, jobs will be created, and it is a win/win situation for everybody. If companies don’t believe that it will be profitable to expand based upon the current financial and economic climate then they will hold onto their earnings until the business climate improves thus the situation we have today. The economic policies of Obama has done next to nothing to improve that business climate.

Our growth is stalled at the lowest it has been in decades. And blaming Bush is just not going to cut it anymore. This clown owns this economy, lock stock and barrel. I just, for the life of me, cannot see why all of you are willing to stick with such a loser. Is your ideology that prevalent? Is it because you want to give him another chance to make it right? Why???
____________________________________________________
I am mostly apolitical but when I see statements like this I just have to put in my two cents. Obama does not own this economy! Before Bush even left office experts were saying it would take 6-10 years or maybe longer for the housing mess to get back to normal. The reason the economy is bad is because banks are not lending money. There is no money in the system and businesses can not get credit lines to expand and hire. If you go back and read about every downturn and recession since the country was formed as I have you will see every time banks tighten credit, there are layoffs and company’s going out of business. It does not matter who got elected or who you elect until this changes the US economy will be in a recession. I work in investment banking and I hear the stories every day about US banks not lending to anybody, no matter your credit or how much real estate you own. Its also interesting that a “peanut farmer” (Carter) and an “unknown black guy” Obama who usually could never have gotten elected in this country but only did so after 8 years of Republican rule that was so bad that Americans were ready to elect anybody who ran no matter their qualifications to be President. Reagan raided the Social Security fund (mistake) and gave them a big government IOU, Nixon took us off the gold standard (mistake) because it allowed politicians to spend money on anything they wanted without raising taxes. You think American would have invaded Iraq blew it up and spent 1.6 trillion and counting rebuilding it if they had to raise your taxes to 60,70,80% to pay for it? History fact the economy in 1939 was just as bad as it was in 1929 and the government threw everything at it including the kitchen sink. It was only World War 2 that pulled us out. Fact Republicans controlled both houses of congress and the Presidency from 1920-1932. The big issue in 1924 was tax breaks for Americans making 100k or more per year. Obama came into office very inexperienced and into a mess. He could have done worse than he did in the crisis he and our country faced. Now he has experience, knows where the bathrooms are and if reelected can do whats necessary and whats sure to be unpopular to take the country forward. Romney says he will cut taxes, increase revenues, increase defense spending and fix social security and Medicare and also create 12 million new jobs. Give me a break! It would take him two years to find all the bathrooms in the White House and then its time to start running for re-election again.

Yea, that 9th Ward drives the nation’s economy.

How about improving the natural capital?

“There have been some suggestions concerning the usage of natural capital in order to further aid New Orleans’ economy. One such is that, as opposed to rebuilding on flooded lands, restoring acres of wetlands to profit from the economic wealth.[83] The Mississippi delta provides the United States with one of the largest fisheries and the most important flyway terminus, enabling New Orleans to profit from these ecological industries.[83] Furthermore, by increasing the wetlands, it would help create a natural barrier that could aid New Orleans in future storms.[83] It is estimated that if New Orleans were to restore 1,700 square miles (4,400 km2) of wetland lost prior to 2005, the natural capital would be worth an estimated $6 billion/year, or $200 billion at the present value.[83] While New Orleans has made numerous efforts in rebuilding their economy, and has been successful with tourist-attracting events such as Mardi Gras, the natural capital provided could further assist the city in returning to its pre-Katrina wealth and economy.”

He said he’d back a plan that would bring revenues to roughly 20% of gross domestic product in order to fix the unsustainable revenue levels caused by the Bush tax cuts and the GOP’s adherence to a no-new-taxes pledge

“The American people are ready for the truth — they can handle the truth,” Rigell told the Daily Press editorial board. “They can handle solutions. They want solutions and they want leadership.”

And the truth, Rigell says, is that the “Bush tax cuts” coupled with Grover Norquist’s “no new tax pledge” signed by the vast majority of Republicans in Congress have locked federal revenue in at a rate that is unsustainable.

“We have a structural deficit that should scare every American across this country,” Rigell said. “I think our house is on fire.”

The stock market hit the bottom of the Bush crash in Obama’s first quarter in office. Since then, it has doubled. In fact his stock market gains trail only Clinton and FDR. It is ironic that if you want the stock market to do well, you need a democrat in the White House. Obama’s gain has been about $5 trillion.
The housing market has stabilized after losing $5 trillion in value during the Bush term. So, on personal wealth, Americans are $5 trillion ahead during Obama’s term.
People seem to have forgotten that when Obama took office, we lost 800,000 jobs in one month, and the housing market went down 18% in one quarter. We didn’t know where the bottom was. Democrats stabilized the financial system, used the stimulus to stop the hemoraging in the labor market, and saved the auto industry.
The one area that continues to be a drag is government employment – since congress and state governments think this is a good time to fire teachers, cops and firefighters.
Changing course now will put us back at the edge of the cliff.

Obama’s Jobs Data

The Claim: Stephanie Cutter, deputy Obama campaign manager, said his record on job creation coming out of a recession was better than that of former Presidents George W. Bush and Ronald Reagan.

“Over the past, you know, 27 months, we’ve created 4.5 million private-sector jobs. That’s more jobs than in the Bush recovery, in the Reagan recovery,” she said.

The Background: The economy is the No. 1 issue in the campaign, and Republicans have hammered President Barack Obama on the sluggish recovery.

The Facts: Cutter was wrong. Bush and Reagan did better than Obama. She misspoke about the number of months it took Obama to see the recovery of 4.5 million private sector jobs. It was 29, not 27.

Measuring from the employment trough in February 2010, through July 2012, the economy did add the 4.5 million jobs Cutter cited. Over the same span from the employment low point under Bush, 4.7 million private-sector jobs were created.

Reagan’s record was 3.5 million better than Obama’s. There were 8 million private sector jobs added during the first 29 months after the December 1982 low point, compared with Obama’s 4.5 million. By another measure, net job growth since the official end of the recession 37 months ago, Obama does outperform Bush, 3.4 million to 1.1 million. Reagan’s recovery still leaves Obama in the dust: 9.1 million.

Emphasis mine.

Reagan’s dead and has been out of office over 20 years, so bringing him in as some sort of foil for Bush is weak tea indeed. The more pertinent comparison is Bush – Obama, and by that measurement, Bush is behind.

Economists generally agree that 150K new jobs must be created each month just to keep up with population growth, let alone put unemployed people back to work. Under Bush, that happened just 25% of the time (24 months out of the 96 months he was President).

Rosita, JHM,

But all joking aside, and O’Rourke is of course correct (though his ‘confession’ is partly intended to inoculate them from criticism) they get away with this because of the pure, breathtaking cynicism of their program and the lack of an equally ruthless and determined opposition (the Democrats too often play the patsies).

By co-opting and cowing the press, who have no historical depth or intellectual/critical depth, they are able to continue convincing the masses that they are the fiscally sound ones — a lie if there ever was one — and the Democrats are the fiscally irresponsible ones. Then, once in office, they raise spending through the roof in an effort to speed up the train of the welfare state that they hope will crash.

Easy. He’s part black. They think he will raise their taxes and give the tax money to people who don’ work.

The truth is, Romeny, if elected, would raise middle class taxes, and give the tax money to the top one per cent, who don’t work, and would cut the taxes on the top one per cent.

Obama has been a huge disappointment to me.

Well, me too, dang it! I thought at the very least he’d cancel these Equal Opportunity laws and get rid of this Civil Rights junk and put a stop to all this welfare Those People are getting. You just can’t imagine how shocked I was when it never happened. And after I’d voted for old cancer-face McCain and let Obama know how I feel, too. Sometimes you just can’t trust a politican to do what you want them to do.

WHITE PEOPLE like YOU .

Mr. Redneck I would not BE SO PROUD to be called a Redneck.

Redneck
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Redneck is a derogatory slang term used in reference to poor, uneducated white farmers, especially from the southern United States.

It is similar in meaning to peckerwood, cracker (especially regarding Georgia and Florida), hillbilly (especially regarding Appalachia and the Ozarks), and poor white trash (but without the last term’s suggestions of immorality).

I recall listening to the 1952 GOP convention on the radio. Listened to the call of the role of states, as they yielded to a neighboring state, or nominated a favorite son. And after a state vote, there would often be a move to poll the delegates, and the speaker would call the name of each delegate from that state and he would say how he voted. No women delegates were there.

Jay I never used “homophobic” slurs….. just your interpretation or opinion. I don’t hate “gay” people and not afraid to be around them. I disagree with their lifestyle but don’t hate them for it. I said that the so called “gay” kiss in at Chick Fil A was wrong and in the face and shouldn’t be done around children. I also said I wouldn’t appreciate heterosexuals doing the same. I did call someone a skank for Obama……. I think they had called me worse before that which brought on my childish response. Will refrain from that in the future. I don’t normally refer to others by name unless they attack some one else by name. Still one person being wrong is no excuse for me doing the same. I am a fiscal conservative which I know Obama and you disagree with. Spending my way out of debt never worked for me. As for being a “sock Puppet” I am out numbered on here by the socialists and libs by a margin of at least 6 to 1. By the way there are others living at my house who do respond to you on my computer. No way to prove that one way or the other is there? I won’t let them give there opinion any more if that will make you happy? Are there no sock puppets being moderated from the left? Oops! Is calling someone a socialist an insult? Also, I do not take kindly to the ignorant insulting God. I don’t insult them for being atheists or whatever. God is not a politician – He never wavers, flip flops or “evolves”. I’ve got problems with the Dems and the Repubs over this debt and have said so. Didn’t vote for Bush II or Obama. Most of you people on this blog seem intelligent. Why do you constantly bring up Bush, he is gone over 3 1/2 yrs ago, probably would not have been re-elected if he could have ran again(which he couldn’t)! 10 yrs from now are you same people going to bring up Obama’s name constantly also? Let’s bring up Kennedy and Eisenhour next, they were not perfect either. Romney has his faults but he brings some good qualities to the table, Obama has not made any progress from the hand he was dealt. If he is re-elected, nothing good will come from it unless you are part of the free-loaders off tax-payers money society. Congress will surely fight him every step of the way! Give the new guy (Romney) a shot and get rid of him in 4 yrs, if he makes no progress in making this a better country. We are so divided, sometimes I think the only answer is to divide the country up into two halves and give each side their own country. One side can not borrow money from the other when they foolishly run out. I want to live on the Conservative side, where we think of our children and grandchildren’s future and not the other where they LIVE FOR TODAY and have no concerns about the national debt. Enough said!

Slightly ironic that people who hate the fact that W’s name still pops up are the very same people who kept bringing up Jimmy Carter during the last election, and Carter was president a generation ago. Bringing up Bush now is a cheap shot, but bringing up Carter in 2008 was fair game?

Seems there’s a few issues that get combined into one so the responses to general statements are all over the map.

- the financial collapse occurred at the end of Pres Bush’s watch

- the basis for the collapse were many, with lack of regulation and oversight, as well as risky practices by lending institutions, leading the pack

- Bush presented Pres Obama with a fiscal year well along that was a trillion and a half in the red, with vastly lower revenues and increasing requirements for social safety programs

- Obama team regularly pointed this out

- at some point many people began tiring of the message of “this is what Bush left us to deal with” and took the attitude of “fine…. now fix it!”

- Obama message on steps taken to correct and positive results (total jobs numbers, Bush v Obama, or new spending programs, Bush v Obama) was muddled.

- Any explanation of what’s being done invariably gets back to why the steps are still necessary in the first place.

Hence the divorced wife and credit card example.

Your answer was non-responsive, and I have explained this to you several times. Since you aren’t quick enough on the uptake to get it. I will explain once more.

You said this: Kind of a shame to let all that talent get wasted on government dependance,

That is *clearly* an implication that I personally receive government assistance. I have asked you several times to elaborate, and you have offered nothing but pitiful dodges. I now conclude that you were attempting to insult me, but that since you neither the character nor the courage to come right out and expressly articulate what you were clearly implying, you’re probably afraid to do so for some reason.

“Everyone on this blog now sees you for waht you are. A blowhard.”

Ben – the left is like a school of crazed piranha when faced with the TRUTH. They can’t handle the TRUTH. They actually think you are making fun of them. Folks Ben didn’t make that itinerary for the Dem Convention up. My wife just got a copy of it in the mail – inviting her (and her money) to the convention. Like I said though, Dems aren’t that good at scheduling because they only gave Al & Jesse a total of 15 minutes to speak in prime time. No way that’s going to work!. My wife is a member of Mensa (top 2%) worldwide in I.Q. and she still has some degree of common sense. She isn’t going to vote Obama!

B. Shockley — “By disavowing government handouts, I’m afraid I have demonstarted EXACTLY that…courage of my convictions.”

No. You have repeatedly refused to demonstrate the courage of your convictions by clarifying what you were trying to say to me earlier. Don’t muddy the waters.

“You…well…not so much.”

Hey, I’m still here. You…well…not so much.

That’s why we have charities, the antithesis of compassionate liberals, i.e. those always willing to help the poor with other people’s money.

but your opinion is ….. registered.

oh and, Ben….JHM did come back….

You can count on him. So can I.

I like that.

Just going to have to disagree with you on affirmative action. Adding to test scores based on race, sex, etc. is giving one group an advantage over another based on their race, sex, etc. That’s all I have to say about this subject.

Joe Hussein Mama , obviously I am doing it wrong because if I was doing it the Santorum way I’d have 6 or 7 kids by now. And darn if I know how I could pay for them all. But I guess sick Rick Santorum would help me out since I would have been doing it “the way things ought to be”. LMAO

First let me say, Santorum is an idiot and an azz.

But, he is NOT on the ballot for president.
He is not in Congress.
He hs NO power to do anything outside his family.

Ryan, on the other hand, IS in congress, and it’s HIS views on BC and abortion that need to be defeated.

Not a powerless Santorum.

Just my opinion of course,

Mama – I read Ben’s comment. You could have inferred that he was speaking directly to you if you are that sensitive. On the other, hand I can infer that he wasn’t. You wanted an answer and received one.

Bloggers, please note that Kamchak will mock people for bringing up socialism, but has not the courage to discuss it.

Nope, I merely want to get the definitions straight.

When you say “socialist society” I want to know that you aren’t referring to a four legged quadruped with retractable claws.

Regarding millionaires and billionaires – I know most of you do not consider me rocket science material, but it just seems to me that if millionaires and billionaires make more money, the middle-class and low-achievers will also? I have no wealth envy, as I think it benefits all!

When Michael Steele said that there were ONLY 32 black delegates to the 2008 GOP Convention in St. Paul…..and the evidence is clear that the GOP doesn’t WANT black people in the party (refer to Kevin Phillips, deviser of the Nixonian “Southern Strategy”, i.e., “black people have NO PLACE my Republican Party”), the question IS an appropriate one!!

Jay – It seems reasonable to me that it is the REAL Democrat Convention Schedule. What do you disagree with? I have already pointed out that Jesse will most likely not be allowed to speak due to his current fragile mind. Get well soon Jesse. However, Al Sharpton will be more than happy to take Jesse’s time but I am concerned that 15 minutes will not be long enough. Holding Al to 15 minutes – if they can do that maybe they can save the economy.

Mama – If I had been banned you wouldn’t be replying to me now would you? How many sock pockets have you used? Ben was attacked repeatedly and maybe he got a little carried away. Responding to attacks from the left on here draws Jay’s ire. I have heard just as bad from the left as the right. Guess he has banned Debbie Do Right? Don’t know what Debbie Did Wrong (sorry) so Jay bans equally without regard, to etc. etc. etc. etc.

Morality — “Mama – If I had been banned you wouldn’t be replying to me now would you?”

Not necessarily. There are several posters here who have used various means to circumvent banning. In fact, Ben himself *admitted* to having been banned a few weeks ago and point-blank asked Jay if he was going to get thrown back off for doing so.

“How many sock pockets have you used?”

None. Real men don’t need sock puppets.

“Ben was attacked repeatedly and maybe he got a little carried away.”

Making personal attacks when one is not themselves attacked is not ‘getting carried away.’ That’s why Ben got warned, and, I suspect, it’s why he took off immediately thereafter.

“Responding to attacks from the left on here draws Jay’s ire.”

I didn’t attack Ben. I simply held his feet to the fire on an implied insult he made against me. He didn’t have the character either to clarify what he meant or to retract it.

“I have heard just as bad from the left as the right.”

Irrelevant. Ben’s warning was due to Ben’s behavior. Not anyone else’s.

“Jay – mama called me a sock puppet…… is that something I should be offended about? Be nice mama.”

Jay clearly said earlier today — on this very thread — that you have a history of using sockpuppets. If you don’t like the accusation, then take it up with Jay.

In a recent Bookman blog the race issue was mentioned. Elsewhere on the web I’ve read that, privately at least, a number of members of the GOP acknowledge that this is their last best chance to return to majority power by appealing almost entirely to white voters. (Then, of course, they intend to further manipulate the system so they can keep power) While the GOP may not overtly use racism, certainly every “closet” racist and biggoted buzzword in their vocabularly keeps popping up along with every effort to deliver the message, ‘Obama’s not like you and me’.

I have little doubt that Mitt Romney personally knows more about how the US and world economy works than Obama and/or any of the advisors that are actually on the side of the employee class of Americans does.

I also have no doubt that Romney has every intention of using that knowledge for the best interest of the wealthiest among us. Everything he has said indicates that he, like the rest of the moneyed investor employer class actual ownership of the GOP, have a total lack of regard for the right of every person to exercise their own “free will”. The GOP has abandoned BOTH individual liberty and equal right under law as far a the right of the average American (especially women) to make their own personal life style choices. The so-called “smaller, less intrusive government” to the GOP and under a Romney presidency, would apply only to PROFIT$ and the pursuit thereof.

If the GOP can continue to get the “follower class of people” to not notice these two truth — if the GOP can keep them in a religious stupor through the election, so they will not consider the actual EFFECTS of GOP policies on the employee class of Americans as well as “least among us”, AND, if they can get them to the polls to vote, the GOP stands a good chance of overcoming any purported incumbant advantage.
