I wish I didn’t have to write this, but apparently I do:
In his ambition to become president, Mitt Romney is trotting out the race card, calling upon and reinforcing old resentments and racial stereotypes to generate votes and support.
I had resisted that notion for months, despite evidence otherwise. I had given Romney a lot more credit than that, both as a person of decent instincts and as a leader. I honestly did not think that he would stoop to the likes of a Newt Gingrich, for example, with his description of Obama as “the food-stamp president” pursuing “Kenyan” values.
In addition, I think conservatives often have a valid point about the “race card” being played too quickly, based on too little evidence. I consider it a serious accusation that should only be made reluctantly, and only with sufficient proof to make it stick.
Unfortunately, the accumulating evidence against Romney has grown too powerful to deny.
Some of you perhaps came to this conclusion a while ago. Some of you no doubt reject it altogether and will continue to do so vehemently. That’s fine, because I’m only speaking for myself. And personally, the straw that broke the camel’s back came in a new interview with USA Today in which Romney charged that Obama was gutting the work requirement in welfare law in order to “shore up his base.”
Because as everyone knows, Obama’s true base can be found among those shiftless Americans too lazy to work and eager to collect welfare bucks for doing nothing, right Mitt? (And if you doubt the power of that narrative among an alarmingly large number of Americans, come back in an hour and read the comments that are sure to follow this post).
In hindsight, the claim that Obama was trying to gut the work requirement — and the prominent play that the Romney camp has given the claim — should have been enough to confirm his shameful intentions. In one ad, for example, Romney claims that “Under Obama’s plan, you wouldn’t have to work and you wouldn’t have to train for a job. They just send you your welfare check.”
Every independent observer to study the claim has confirmed that it is false. Not just slightly false, totally false. Politifact calls it a pants-on-fire lie. The Washington Post gives it Four Pinocchios. FactCheck.org also concluded the charge is false.
The reality is that several state governments, including Republican administrations in Utah and Nevada, sought flexibility in how to administer the law. That’s a conservative idea, right? Give states flexibility in figuring out how best to do things? When Obama took office, just 29 percent of welfare recipients were actually working or taking job training, so the idea of trying something new seemed attractive.
As Gary Herbert, the Republican governor of Utah, wrote in a letter last month defending the waiver request, “Some of these participation requirements are difficult and costly to verify, while other participation requirements do not lead to meaningful employment outcomes and are overly prescriptive.” Utah has no intention whatsoever of weakening work requirements, Herbert wrote.
But when the administration acceded to such requests, it was immediately accused of wanting to give taxpayer money away to welfare bums.
But again, the falsity of the charge is not what gives it away. What gives it away is the Romney campaign’s insistence on taking a very minor bureaucratic change and trying to elevate it into a major issue in the campaign. There is only one possible explanation for pushing the welfare claim so hard, and for hinting that the change is being implemented to “shore up (Obama’s) base.”
And that is an appeal to racism.

Well, it’s just about bedtime for a working man. And for some reason this song’s been running thru my head all day. It’s sorta about a poor man vs. a rich man, and I reckon that makes it a OK election tune. Anyways, if you wasn’t here when this one come out in 1963, you don’t know enough to blog and somebody needs to change your diaper, give you a good spanking, and put you to bed. Nobody sung a song like Lefty Frizzell, and there ain’t been another one since he passed on. I don’t know about you, but I’ve had enough of the fussing tonight and so it’s time for you to go to bed with old Lefty’s sound running thru your head:

I know this is just speculation. But, suppose you were to ask 100 blacks why they vote democrat, or why they would never vote for a republican, how many do you suppose would give the same answer as you did above?

SoCoBro – I should do the same thing more often. I’m a romantic so I like to research a lot of “romantic history” from the rennaissance period and/or from the Harlem Rennaissance.
If I veer off into the realm of politics in my research, it’s only by chance. For instance, I was researching Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God, and found out about her hometown in Florida — a veritable All Black city that’s been that way since Reconstruction; that led to my interst in other “all black towns”; and the existence of Rosewood.
You’ve just showed me that I have to start digger deeper into my “roots”.

I wouldn’t think there are more than 5-6 that know the historical perspective. That said, when it’s been going on for 100 years, who would know that anyway? It’s not like you can pick up any history book and find that information.
It’s no different than many Blacks who don’t know how to swim because their parents and/or siblings didn’t know how to swim. When you have a system that works, you don’t change it. Liberal Republicans got Blacks elected after the Civil War. Progressive minded people helped during the fight to end Jim Crow and segregation. Those things are almost instinctive in the Black Community. If it were Conservatives that had done all that, you’d likely see Blacks voting 95% for GOP candidates.
Look back at how the percentage has increased for Democrats and compare that to the decline of moderate and liberal Republicans.

I’ve dabbled into the towns and communities. Funny that you mention Rosewood. You don’t find that story or the story about Tulsa, Oklahoma in history books either. The Greenwood section of Tulsa was known as the “Black Wall Street” because of the concentration of wealth within that neighborhood. All that money didn’t keep it from getting burned down during the riots of 1919 though.

Earlier this week, RNC Chairman Michael Steele told a group of 200 students at DePaul University that African-Americans “don’t have a reason” to vote for Republican candidates.
During his remarks he also acknowledged that for decades the GOP pursued “‘Southern Strategy’ that alienated many minority voters by focusing on the white male vote in the South.”
Steele was asked to explain why an African-American should vote Republican at a university-sponsored discussion on the conservative movement. The RNC chairman’s response: “You really don’t have a reason to, to be honest — we haven’t done a very good job of really giving you one. True? True.”
Steele also discussed with students his own experience being the victim of racial discrimination — a subject that the he has openly addressed in the past. Steele told TV One’s Roland Martin in November that even some of his fellow Republicans are “scared” of him because of his race.
Steele acknowledged his party’s failure to reach out and connect with African-Americans and other marginalized communities. “We have lost sight of the historic, integral link between the party and African-Americans,” he explained.
Steele went on to make a candid statement about how the disconnect between Republicans and minorities is not new and has been a part of the party’s strategy for years. The Chicago-Sun Times reports on what the RNC Chairman had to say:

That’s where you’re wrong. People try to paint it as a race thing when it’s nothing of the sort. The message that the Republicans peddle is not one that will go over well in the Black Community. As I’ve asked other people before, how can you tell someone to pull themselves up by their bootstraps when they are walking around with bare feet?
You don’t have to promise any giveaways either. All you have to do is level the playing field. When people have been continuously mistreated simply because of the color of their skin, anything they hear that remotely sounds that way will be perceived as such. Find an animal that has been abused. Raise your hand like you’re going to hit it and watch the response.
It’s all conditioning, and it will not change in 5-10 years. You’re talking about a community that has been physically and mentally shackled for close to 200 years on this soil. You can’t change that mindset in a single generation. You can’t will that kind of change either. It has to be genuine outreach to want to help someone to help themselves that will get there. As long as you have the current mouthpieces belittling the race as a whole, you set things back years each time they say something stupid.

The only one playing the race card here is Liberal Jay. The Left always jumps on this race thing when they have NOTHING ELSE TO TALK ABOUT! King Hussein Obama does not subscribe to real American values. With that fact laid out here, it’s no surprise that Lil Hussein has thrown out the work requirement. This “president” uses “his” anti-colonial values to justify wealth redistribution which is the key component to “his” gutting Welfare Reform.
What in the world is racist about calling out this president on his failed policies? Give it up, you McFly Commie Libs. You know that your “president” failed even worse than your hero, Jimmah Carter. It’s not racism, you naive secular progressives. It’s called, the “man” fell down on the job. I would say that a lot of African-American men would be much better than King Hussein Obama. Dr. Keyes and Herman Cain come right to mind because they are real men who would stand up to liberalism, dictators while creating real private sector jobs. President Romney and Vice President Ryan WILL seriously end Welfare as we all know it – for good! You clueless libs are going to be in for a rude surprise in January.

To sum it up in one word, attitude. You can’t denigrate me and then expect me to vote for you as though nothing happened. Blacks pick up on those dog whistle phrases just as well as others do.
How often do you suppose they have heard ‘Republicans are racist” ?
As many times as they’ve heard Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and others being referred to as race pimps. Actions speak louder than words. Don’t devolve every friggin’ incident into race and you won’t be viewed as racist.
If they caught Biden’s comment,?
Yep, and if you pay attention, you’ll hear laughter after he said that. It’s all in presentation. If you say something and mean it as humorous, it will come through in the context. If you don’t mean it as such, that will show as well. Compare the reactions to Biden’s comments and those from someone like Chris Rock. The two of them are pretty much saying the same thing and getting the same reaction.

“The message that the Republicans peddle is not one that will go over well in the Black Community.”
So what part of the R message is that doesn’t resonate. The part about rugged individualism and self reliance, individual responsibility, limited govt, free market capitalism, getting a hold of runaway debt? I have a difficult time believing African Americans are against all these things. Or am I wrong?
“As I’ve asked other people before, how can you tell someone to pull themselves up by their bootstraps when they are walking around with bare feet?”
That’s a nice bit of hyperbole and rhetoric but how many people have you seen running around barefooted? Seems to me that a lot of kids from poor neighborhoods somehow manage to run around in $100 Nikes as opposed to being barefooted. Enough with the nonsense about opportunity or lack of bootstraps. Prestigious colleges in California are packed out with Asians who went to many of the same tough inner city schools as many blacks. The difference in the 2 groups isn’t about opportunity or about not having bootstraps. Its about values such as family(including the 2 parent family), an incredible emphasis on education and hard work, staying out of trouble, etc. Until you address the uncomfortable truths of why black people are failing absymally relative to other minorities you’re going to be continously mired in collective failure.
Poor Central Americans who can’t even speak our language travel 3,000 miles through a desert in which hundreds die every year just to reach America and make enough money doing menial labor to support themselves and their families back in CA. These poor, uneducated Latins that can’t even speak English forgot to get the memo about how hard life is. Waaaaaa! So did the Asians whose forefathers were little more than indentured servants working on railroads.
I don’t want to hear any of the lame ass excuses and crap about not even having bootstraps to begin with. That’s a bunch of garbabe and frankly if you haven’t been to a 3rd world country outside of resorts then you don’t know what the hell not having bootstraps really means. This is the land of opportunity and if someone can’t make it here then they can’t make it anywhere. People need to quit their damn whining, quit blaming their failure on some racial bogey man, look in the mirror about the cultural habits that keep them down, and get their shyte together.
Just another uncomfortable truth brought to you by Doomy.

Women know when they are being talked down to; as do blacks.
The 3 card monty game that republicans are playing are fooling no one.
SoCoBro: Sometimes I wish I were older so that I could have talked to people who survived those incidents in order to record things as they really happened. This country was founded on violence, and it only acts and reacts in violent incidents.
I do sometimes too. However, then I think about stories that my Grand used to tell. It’s enough to make your hair stand up on the back of your head. I think of the story he told of his older brother, who was only days out of the ARmy still in his uniform , after WWII and was lynched by an all white mob in Alabama for being “uppity”.
Nope — it may be the good old days for some, but for me, I’m glad they’re, mostly, gone.

they both suck,
I understand that. I never said Rs have a monopoly on free market capitalism. Plenty of D professionals and business owners out there. I was simply asking Bro specifically what element of the R platform is it that black America disagrees with?

“How about writing about a solution to this mess instead of pointing fingers?”
Because as has been cynically noted the Ds always fall back to a position of riling up their base by conjuring up some racist bogeyman. As several people have noted Jay’s attempt to conjure up racism out of Romney’s statements on the welfare law is quite a stretch. Its unfortunate but conjuring up the racial bogeyman out of thin air is how they roll. And equally unfortunate is how many of their STOOOPID voters fall for that crap.

Here and now. Blacks do not vote democrat for the reasons you are giving. Some? Sure. The majority? No way. I don’t have any study on it, and I’m certainly not black.
That’s freaking amazing! A BLACK MAN tells you what he feels, and others like him about republicans, but you DON’T BELIEVE HIM!
What else do you want? How dumb is that?

Silly comment. You would be hard pressed to find a nation on earth that wasn’t founded on violence and whose people have never warred against others. Violence has been a part of human history since Cain slew Abel. And for the record Rosewood was nearly 100 years ago. A tragic and shameful black eye on U.S. history. But this is 2012. Constantly bringing up stuff like Rosewood from almost a century ago seems to have become nothing more than an outlet for vengeful hate masquerading as political correctness.

DDR,
Where did I state that I don’t believe him? I do believe that is what he “feels”. But that’s not what I asked him. I asked what it is about the R platform that black America opposes. And you’re reading all this other crap into it that I neither said nor suggested. How STOOOOPID is that?
“Doom – You’re in luck, your pals the repugs are trying to turn this country into a 3rd world country. Congrats.”
Well DDR its under your president that middle class incomes have declined almost 4 % since the recession ended. Sorry ma’am but W isn’t president anymore. Hasn’t been for nearly 4 years. And we haven’t been in recession for well over 3 years either.
“You don’t know half the crap you’re talking about.”

Black mob violence aimed specifically at whites? Just another uncomfortable truth that DDR would rather not address. Its more befitting her hateful narrative to stick with an event from nearly 100 years ago like Rosewood. After all we live in 1920 and not 2012 right DDR?

Well we see how this goes. You point out a fact that doesn’t fit someone’s hate filled narrative and what do they respond with? A lot of hate filled invective that doesn’t address the fact of how many prominent African Americans W hired in high level positions. Facts don’t matter to libs. Hateful, emotional rhetoric is how they roll.
