I wish I didn’t have to write this, but apparently I do:
In his ambition to become president, Mitt Romney is trotting out the race card, calling upon and reinforcing old resentments and racial stereotypes to generate votes and support.
I had resisted that notion for months, despite evidence otherwise. I had given Romney a lot more credit than that, both as a person of decent instincts and as a leader. I honestly did not think that he would stoop to the likes of a Newt Gingrich, for example, with his description of Obama as “the food-stamp president” pursuing “Kenyan” values.
In addition, I think conservatives often have a valid point about the “race card” being played too quickly, based on too little evidence. I consider it a serious accusation that should only be made reluctantly, and only with sufficient proof to make it stick.
Unfortunately, the accumulating evidence against Romney has grown too powerful to deny.
Some of you perhaps came to this conclusion a while ago. Some of you no doubt reject it altogether and will continue to do so vehemently. That’s fine, because I’m only speaking for myself. And personally, the straw that broke the camel’s back came in a new interview with USA Today in which Romney charged that Obama was gutting the work requirement in welfare law in order to “shore up his base.”
Because as everyone knows, Obama’s true base can be found among those shiftless Americans too lazy to work and eager to collect welfare bucks for doing nothing, right Mitt? (And if you doubt the power of that narrative among an alarmingly large number of Americans, come back in an hour and read the comments that are sure to follow this post).
In hindsight, the claim that Obama was trying to gut the work requirement — and the prominent play that the Romney camp has given the claim — should have been enough to confirm his shameful intentions. In one ad, for example, Romney claims that “Under Obama’s plan, you wouldn’t have to work and you wouldn’t have to train for a job. They just send you your welfare check.”
Every independent observer to study the claim has confirmed that it is false. Not just slightly false, totally false. Politifact calls it a pants-on-fire lie. The Washington Post gives it Four Pinocchios. FactCheck.org also concluded the charge is false.
The reality is that several state governments, including Republican administrations in Utah and Nevada, sought flexibility in how to administer the law. That’s a conservative idea, right? Give states flexibility in figuring out how best to do things? When Obama took office, just 29 percent of welfare recipients were actually working or taking job training, so the idea of trying something new seemed attractive.
As Gary Herbert, the Republican governor of Utah, wrote in a letter last month defending the waiver request, “Some of these participation requirements are difficult and costly to verify, while other participation requirements do not lead to meaningful employment outcomes and are overly prescriptive.” Utah has no intention whatsoever of weakening work requirements, Herbert wrote.
But when the administration acceded to such requests, it was immediately accused of wanting to give taxpayer money away to welfare bums.
But again, the falsity of the charge is not what gives it away. What gives it away is the Romney campaign’s insistence on taking a very minor bureaucratic change and trying to elevate it into a major issue in the campaign. There is only one possible explanation for pushing the welfare claim so hard, and for hinting that the change is being implemented to “shore up (Obama’s) base.”
And that is an appeal to racism.

That pig won’t fly Jay. Obama did not have to drop the work requirement to make the plan more flexible to states….. that is just his excuse. Name me a state, any state, that asked for the work requirement to be dropped. Not saying that people on welfare are his base but am saying that this will result with more people added to the rolls – voting people. Romney’s was not a racist statement but a fact. Obama is throwing candy to a particular part of his base. The one’s that fought and criticized the Republicans and Clinton for making seeking work a requirement to receive welfare are among Obama’s base – most of them vote democrat.

I’ve heard Al Gore and Hillary Clinton adopt black accents while campaigning with a primarily black audience. I heard Joe Biden say Romeny was trying to “put y’all back in chains” to a primarily black audience. And somehow Romney is a racist for suggesting Obama’s base (more white than black) is full of people who would favor work requirements be removed for welfare receipients (more white than black)? This is the “evidence” that Jay finds too powerful to deny?

I fail to see any proof of the racial charge.
The work requirements thing is based on him giving Sebelius the power of waivers. She’ll give out waivers for work requirements left and right. He’s watered down the work requirement in effect, if not codified into law. It’s like immigration, he didn’t change the law, he just told people not to enforce it. Accomplishes the same thing without that whole messy law thing getting in the way/

Having read thru your piece a few more times, I realize I was hitting a roadblock thinking of Romney as a racist or one dealing in stereotypes. My error was that is not the point of the piece. I know a much higher percentage of African Americans are on welfare than whites, but the stereotype I think of is someone who has made bad decisions (drugs, high school dropout, children outside of marriage). ———————————————————————
That’s rich. The Obama Campaign has largely been focused on targeting people by race, ethnicity and gender based on stereotyping each group. In addition, the Obama Campaign and its support groups have already spent a few hundred million dollars running ads implying that Romney is a tax cheat, a felon and just about the most nasty person imaginable. No sitting president in modern times has come anywhere close to running such a negative campaign focosed on assasinating the character of its opponent. I believe Jay Bookman, a while back, praised the Obama Campaign for deploying such a “shrewd” strategy.

Lord Help: Liberals like Ezra Klein, like Jay, are almost invariably caught by surprise and mystified by these tactics, because they violate the norms of gentlemanly good faith that they like to imagine are the true rules of the political game that are played by.
The “puzzlingly anachronistic” thing about this line of attack is the fact that it’s pure fiction, fabrication. Since Clinton’s capitulation to the right wing in the 90s and his virtual dismantling of welfare, it’s been absurd to speak of Democrats as a party of big welfare state wealth transfers to the indolent. By attacking welfare, Clinton basically did away with it and codified as bipartisan hostility to the New Deal welfare state, just as Barack Obama has done with the War on Terror security state.
But come election time, this poses a little problem for predatory sociopaths like Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan. That’s why they have to redirect the attention of today’s voters away from current reality back 25 years to a different world, back to a time when the “tax and spend liberal” was an actual creature and a target.
Our two parties are both so close — or were before the GOP went completely mad — that with each election these sociopaths have to invent ever more contorted schemes for distorting reality to make it fit some stereotype of 25 yrs ago.

Again, stick to the facts folks. Obama’s people didn’t say Romney was a felon. Romney was trying to distance himself from some of the tricks his old company Bain had done and said he’d left it in 1999. Unfortunatley for him, the papers he signed and filed with the SEC (that’s Securities and Exchange Commission, not Southeastern Conference) said he ran the company until 2002. So, Obama’s people said he was EITHER a felon, because filing false papers is a felony, or a LIAR. See, they didn’t insist he was a felon. They left an opening.

The premise of this column is ridiculous. Romney’s claim has nothing to do with racism, it has everything to do with the producer-verus-moocher struggle that it ruining this country.
Everyone knows Obama need not worry about “shoring up his base”, in regards to blacks. Blacks will vote for him no matter what, because of the color of his skin.

“Jay, I am not a Romney fan, I plan to vote for Obama in November, and I really don’t see how these comments have anything to do with race. Your reaching here, and it’s emabarassing.”–Laurie
That’s because you are intellectually honest and “In touch” with reality, Laurie. Jay is not.
Jay takes his orders from the Leftwing fringe of the DemocRat Party operatives.
“Talk about ANYTHING except the ECONOMY and the dismal record of Dear Leader Obama.”
How’s the economy, Jay??? $16 Trillion debt… etc.

Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and most of the talking heads on MSNBC have made a living playing the race card. The race card has been how they define their worldview. It is almost as if they can’t acknowledge that we have made progress and actually have an African-American President, female Supreme Court justices, and minority leaders in both Government and private sector positions. I would argue that your blog today panders to stereotypes of bigoted GOP members in the same way you imply Romney is doing to the Democratic base. Frankly, you want to talk about race because it avoids how poorly the country is doing as a whole. Regardless of your ethnicity, gender, or sexual preference, if you eat food, use electricity, pay taxes, or are looking for a job, you are being negatively affected by Obama administration policies.

it does not surprise me in the slightest. anyone who will pander to the Teaanderthals, er I mean Tea Party as much as Willard has, will not think a thing about playing the race card. His air of entitlement is showing.

“Which of you is prepared to argue that the stereotypical welfare recipient is white?”
Well now it is a fact unless it has very recently changed that on average 38% of all welfare recipients are white while only 37% are black. More whites on the dole. And in my neck of the woods out here in the country there are a whole lotta white folk on the dole- not to mention on the meth, in the jails, etc.

I think there’s some truth to that interpretation, Class. I’d still argue that race is a big part of it too — inseparable, really — but I can see what you’re saying.

No. I think Obama, like other Democrat Presidents – their base is the poor/middle class. Read that sentence carefully. POOR/MIDDLE CLASS. Nowhere did I mention race.

Romney represents the moocher ideal. Let’s let our armies and police fight to protect our rich, but let’s go ahead and cut the taxes the rich pay for these services. Heck, let’s not tax capital gains at all. Let’s only tax income produced from actual work. That ought to let Romney’s friends off the hook for taxes.
Now, if you’re refering to “Obamacare” as a give away, I guess you’ll be happier with “Romneycare,” as introduced under Mitt in the state of Massachusetts. Oh, wait, they’re the same.

It is kind of funny seeing conservatives rush to offer the “but most people on welfare are white” argument.
Especially since any time I’ve made that point on this blog, I get excoriated about the “percentages” of Blacks on welfare based on population is much higher than Whites on welfare

On another note:
I may be wrong and if so will retract this but based on my observations of our flag at government installations over the past few days, the first man in the history of the world to walk on the moon did not rate the United States flag at half-staff after his passing. Not even for a few hours. I guess it just wasn’t politically correct.
By the way, a couple of things you may not know:
1) Astronaut Gus Grissom, had he not bee killed in a training accident, was to have been the first man on the moon.
2) The following statement was to have been read by the president had Armstrong and Aldrin been stranded there (which was a distinct possibility):
“Fate has ordained that the men who went to the moon to explore in peace will stay on the moon to rest in peace.
These brave men, Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin, know that there is no hope for their recovery. But they also know that there is hope for mankind in their sacrifice.
These two men are laying down their lives in mankind’s most noble goal: the search for truth and understanding.
They will be mourned by their families and friends; they will be mourned by their nation; they will be mourned by the people of the world; they will be mourned by a Mother Earth that dared send two of her sons into the unknown.
In their exploration, they stirred the people of the world to feel as one; in their sacrifice, they bind more tightly the brotherhood of man.
In ancient days, men looked at stars and saw their heroes in the constellations. In modern times, we do much the same, but our heroes are epic men of flesh and blood.
Others will follow, and surely find their way home. Man’s search will not be denied. But these men were the first, and they will remain the foremost in our hearts.
For every human being who looks up at the moon in the nights to come will know that there is some corner of another world that is forever mankind.”

“Which of you is prepared to argue that the stereotypical welfare recipient is white?”
Not me, and not by a long shot. But I find it rather odd that so many who are ready to jump like white on rice on this one are the same ones who’ll throw out trailer park, redneck and what have you and then claim they’re not referring JUST to Southern whites, heavily drawn from my fellow liberals. This “code word for” thing cuts both ways and until such time as we recognize it as such, it will continue. I loathe, detest and despise this type of smug piety, And, no, I’m not accusing you of it, but I am saying that you do let that go unchallenged when it surfaces on a regular basis, but you’ve got a good record of challenging it from those who come down just as mean, hateful, spiteful and, well, trashy, on the rural, white, fundamentalist Christian population class…
