I admit, I’m surprised: Romney campaign stirs the racial pot

I wish I didn’t have to write this, but apparently I do:

In his ambition to become president, Mitt Romney is trotting out the race card, calling upon and reinforcing old resentments and racial stereotypes to generate votes and support.

I had resisted that notion for months, despite evidence otherwise. I had given Romney a lot more credit than that, both as a person of decent instincts and as a leader. I honestly did not think that he would stoop to the likes of a Newt Gingrich, for example, with his description of Obama as “the food-stamp president” pursuing “Kenyan” values.

In addition, I think conservatives often have a valid point about the “race card” being played too quickly, based on too little evidence. I consider it a serious accusation that should only be made reluctantly, and only with sufficient proof to make it stick.

Unfortunately, the accumulating evidence against Romney has grown too powerful to deny.

Some of you perhaps came to this conclusion a while ago. Some of you no doubt reject it altogether and will continue to do so vehemently. That’s fine, because I’m only speaking for myself. And personally, the straw that broke the camel’s back came in a new interview with USA Today in which Romney charged that Obama was gutting the work requirement in welfare law in order to “shore up his base.”

Because as everyone knows, Obama’s true base can be found among those shiftless Americans too lazy to work and eager to collect welfare bucks for doing nothing, right Mitt? (And if you doubt the power of that narrative among an alarmingly large number of Americans, come back in an hour and read the comments that are sure to follow this post).

In hindsight, the claim that Obama was trying to gut the work requirement — and the prominent play that the Romney camp has given the claim — should have been enough to confirm his shameful intentions. In one ad, for example, Romney claims that “Under Obama’s plan, you wouldn’t have to work and you wouldn’t have to train for a job. They just send you your welfare check.”

Every independent observer to study the claim has confirmed that it is false. Not just slightly false, totally false. Politifact calls it a pants-on-fire lie. The Washington Post gives it Four Pinocchios. FactCheck.org also concluded the charge is false.

The reality is that several state governments, including Republican administrations in Utah and Nevada, sought flexibility in how to administer the law. That’s a conservative idea, right? Give states flexibility in figuring out how best to do things? When Obama took office, just 29 percent of welfare recipients were actually working or taking job training, so the idea of trying something new seemed attractive.

As Gary Herbert, the Republican governor of Utah, wrote in a letter last month defending the waiver request, “Some of these participation requirements are difficult and costly to verify, while other participation requirements do not lead to meaningful employment outcomes and are overly prescriptive.” Utah has no intention whatsoever of weakening work requirements, Herbert wrote.

But when the administration acceded to such requests, it was immediately accused of wanting to give taxpayer money away to welfare bums.

But again, the falsity of the charge is not what gives it away. What gives it away is the Romney campaign’s insistence on taking a very minor bureaucratic change and trying to elevate it into a major issue in the campaign. There is only one possible explanation for pushing the welfare claim so hard, and for hinting that the change is being implemented to “shore up (Obama’s) base.”

And that is an appeal to racism.

Obama and his surrogates have been busy for months sharpening divisions, creating wedges to divide and causes to make new classes of victims to motivate their base. Obama has been the most divisive president in history and his campaign has cynically played the race card all over and over again. The media has turned a blind eye.

But the American people have not.

Now Bookman and the media have orders from their masters to try to make the republicans somehow guilty too. Bookman, like the rest of the loyal lapdogs is writing his editorial on demand, parroting what the campaign needs him to say. It’s pathetic that so called journalists have decided to support the most partisan, most divisive administration in the history of our republic.

Since this is still active, I’ll toss in a couple cents. I think of myself as pretty non-biased racially. I grew up in a very white community in the 50-60’s. I was oblivious to the freedom marches in the South. I was oblivious to segregation. I now work in a very mixed race and ethnic environment. It is the only possible way for Governor Romney to win.

He stands to win ONLY if he can get every racist slimeball to crawl out from under a rock to the voting booth. What’s that…20-25% of the population?

We are unable to live in a world where there is so much for everybody. We tend to try and be above those who don’t have it or poor. Normally, we always say blacks and have pictures sent accross the TV or media anyway they can. racism in all forms hurt’s all of us no matter who we are. I am sure President Obama have taken so many hits and he will endure more of them but he takes it well. Romney don’t have the rights to create, start, talk or even have it mentioned that he is far better than President Obama, Ryan will break and bring Romney down….it will come over a dispute for something Ryan will do and not openly say. Then is the dressing of both of them, unprofessionally and they both look like streets thugs….in every way and none of us can discount their appearences. I think being a human being living here in America has gotten the best of our people because we have not tried to live together among one and other, rather, we try to be apart. I seen this in my own people; living where the whites does; dressing, talking, and even trying to emulate them. So none of us can talk, nor can other races, we all will sink together because what is under my foot you have the same. All of the material things we have……..it will not matter in the end. The buck stop with our elected leaders who put up a front and then can’t back up what they say……true with this 2012 2013 President election coming to surface!

They justify their abhorrent racially targeted statements by cloaking them in terms of fiscal policy.

Thus their code words – “entitlement society”, “poor work ethic”, “food stamp president, etc.

But occassionally their poisoned racial animus lips out as when Ricky Santorum said he meant “blah people” — when the world heard him say “black people” — as he spoke about parasitic Americans who get better lives by taking “somebody else’s money.

Or when Nut Gangrene declared that black people should demand jobs instead of food stamps. And he has proposed having poor students work as janitors in their high schools. Regardless of how they were intended, poor people and minorities sense that with those comments Gingrich is winking — some call it “dog whistling” — at certain white audiences by intimating that black people are lazy, happy to live off the government and lacking any intellect.

What is amazing is how some conservative poor , middle class whites believe a rich white millionare who dont give a dam about middle class whites, the man wants to give you a vocher for medicaid, after years of taking this out your check.

Obama mistake was believing in white America and trying to save these people, he should have let bin ladin attack the right one more time, he should have let the auto industry fail so more middle class whites would be unemployed, he should have let the teachers, firemen, police officers all lose their jobs.

President Obama did not learn what most blacks know, that whites dont respect you unless you are entertaining them on the sports field, and they have no loyalty toward the President unless he is white.

What people here are failung to realize….the GOP’s “Southern Strategy” was designed to marginalize black people nationally….and the deviser of that “Strategy” came out and SAID it in the late 60’s!! Kevin Phillips basically said that “….as a Republican, black people have no place in his party.”

“when in reality
the majority of welfare”

goes to the poor/middle class. Why bring race into this, Granny?

.

You’re so appealing when you are naive. Like a fluffy little kitten with great big eyes.

Race is part of it.

Well Jay, the white guilt ploy isn’t going to fly in this election. Obama has a record he can’t run on and the race card is laughable.

As I recall McCain got about half the white vote as did Obama in 2008, 48 to 52% or something like that. Further, Obama got a good percentage of the educated white and young white vote. McCain got many of the poor white votes. Obama got nearly all the black votes. So, making a statement about there being more whites on welfare and therefore Romney was not referring to minorities when talking about Obama’s welfare recipient base, or other such claims, is a fallacy.

White educated males, will vote for Obama because they realize the importance of moving America to the 21st century, when you have Mitt who will cut pell grants, they will come out like 2008.

Poor undecated whites will never vote for Obama even if he had unemployment rate at 0, look at Mich, Obama saved over million of these poor middle class white auto workers jobs and he is tied with the man who said let them go bankrupt, had this been Clinton or Bush poor whites would have been on their knees kissing their rear ends.

It does not matter if Obama has family values, morales, bigot white men backed Clinton and Newt this says it all about the character of of most white males”””

Now, if Romney will stay away from trying to appeal to White Southerners with any references to Uncle Remus’ “Tar Baby Story.”

Granny, I don’t really care for any of them. They’re all party mouthpieces.
The country would be better off if the party system was abolished. Not gonna happen.

I would vote for Wanda Sykes ALL DAY long before either of these two guys.

Romney made no racists remarks. The only mention of race in the article is mentioned by Jay.
Weak sauce there Jay!
