I admit, I’m surprised: Romney campaign stirs the racial pot

I wish I didn’t have to write this, but apparently I do:

In his ambition to become president, Mitt Romney is trotting out the race card, calling upon and reinforcing old resentments and racial stereotypes to generate votes and support.

I had resisted that notion for months, despite evidence otherwise. I had given Romney a lot more credit than that, both as a person of decent instincts and as a leader. I honestly did not think that he would stoop to the likes of a Newt Gingrich, for example, with his description of Obama as “the food-stamp president” pursuing “Kenyan” values.

In addition, I think conservatives often have a valid point about the “race card” being played too quickly, based on too little evidence. I consider it a serious accusation that should only be made reluctantly, and only with sufficient proof to make it stick.

Unfortunately, the accumulating evidence against Romney has grown too powerful to deny.

Some of you perhaps came to this conclusion a while ago. Some of you no doubt reject it altogether and will continue to do so vehemently. That’s fine, because I’m only speaking for myself. And personally, the straw that broke the camel’s back came in a new interview with USA Today in which Romney charged that Obama was gutting the work requirement in welfare law in order to “shore up his base.”

Because as everyone knows, Obama’s true base can be found among those shiftless Americans too lazy to work and eager to collect welfare bucks for doing nothing, right Mitt? (And if you doubt the power of that narrative among an alarmingly large number of Americans, come back in an hour and read the comments that are sure to follow this post).

In hindsight, the claim that Obama was trying to gut the work requirement — and the prominent play that the Romney camp has given the claim — should have been enough to confirm his shameful intentions. In one ad, for example, Romney claims that “Under Obama’s plan, you wouldn’t have to work and you wouldn’t have to train for a job. They just send you your welfare check.”

Every independent observer to study the claim has confirmed that it is false. Not just slightly false, totally false. Politifact calls it a pants-on-fire lie. The Washington Post gives it Four Pinocchios. FactCheck.org also concluded the charge is false.

The reality is that several state governments, including Republican administrations in Utah and Nevada, sought flexibility in how to administer the law. That’s a conservative idea, right? Give states flexibility in figuring out how best to do things? When Obama took office, just 29 percent of welfare recipients were actually working or taking job training, so the idea of trying something new seemed attractive.

As Gary Herbert, the Republican governor of Utah, wrote in a letter last month defending the waiver request, “Some of these participation requirements are difficult and costly to verify, while other participation requirements do not lead to meaningful employment outcomes and are overly prescriptive.” Utah has no intention whatsoever of weakening work requirements, Herbert wrote.

But when the administration acceded to such requests, it was immediately accused of wanting to give taxpayer money away to welfare bums.

But again, the falsity of the charge is not what gives it away. What gives it away is the Romney campaign’s insistence on taking a very minor bureaucratic change and trying to elevate it into a major issue in the campaign. There is only one possible explanation for pushing the welfare claim so hard, and for hinting that the change is being implemented to “shore up (Obama’s) base.”

And that is an appeal to racism.

When I see a politician caught in a lie, I generally wait to see what happens after it becomes common knowledge that it’s a lie. It is Romney’s repeated use of this lie – an egregiou, out and out LIE, that makes me reject anything he says. And everything he says.. There is no way, after all this time, that he doesn’t know it’s a lie…but he repeats it and repeats it and repeats it.

I therefore consider that everything he says is a lie.

A lot of people have the “gut feeling” (see: Truthiness) that Obama wants to give away government money to people who don’t work. Many of these same people believe Obama wants to take away their guns. Facts don’t seem to matter to the people who think like this. I assume that a lot of talk radio shows reinforce these feelings. In fact, many of these people believe that Obama’s mother sent in a fake birth announcement to a Honolulu paper 50 years ago because she wanted to make sure that her half Kenyan son born in out of the USA, who she’d just given the most foreign sounding name possible, could run for president some day. If they can believe something that far fetched, then I don’t want to be the one to break the news about Santa Clause and the Easter Bunny to them.

You obviously must not be present anytime the topic of welfare comes up. Anytime someone mentions that more Whites are on welfare than Blacks, the “percentages to population” argument rears it’s ugly head. Just own up to the fact that some on the right automatically associate welfare with Blacks. Santorum has done it, Gingrich has done it, and now Romney’s flirting around with the edges of it.

Romney may not be deliberately playing the race card here, but those who answer to the dog whistle can clearly hear the notes being played in that song.

It’s only racial if you think people on welfare are only people of color.

Bingo… There are as many… if not more… poor whites on welfare as poor blacks. Someone who makes this a racial argument IS a racist. If the first image that comes to your mind is a black person when someone says “welfare” , then YOU (Jay Bookman) are a racist.

If you look at some of the things that qualified as “work” before welfare reform signed into law by Bill Clinton, then allowing those things again IS gutting welfare reform… for all races.

Paul

August 27th, 2012
2:58 pm

Jay

You may be reading it a bit too narrowly? “His base” could apply to the more liberal, activist wing. I did a look on Google under “liberals opposed to welfare work requirements’ and found examples from Clinton’s 1996 welfare reform to stricter work proposals under Bush.

As an example, “Now the Bush administration wants even tougher work requirements. Once again, most liberal Democrats think it is a mistake to worry about making every last single mother work when we have not yet ensured that those who already work can provide for their children” from The American Prospect at

http://prospect.org/article/liberal-lessons-welfare-reform

I can see broad lines of “more work” and “less work” as a general principle split among Democrats and Republicans. Given the history of tension along those lines, I don’t think it necessary to narrow it down further to the racial angle.

But having said all that, we all know what stereotypes come to mind when we hear phrases such as “young moms with lots of kids on welfare” and “welfare as a lifestyle passed from generation to generation.”

So I could be persuaded with more evidence. But I’m not yet ready to make that connection.

Jay I agree wholeheartedly with you. When a candidate moves away from the truth and facts and plays strictly on emotions and fear, the underlying reason/tactic becomes clear. Someone in Alabama actually painted the back window of their car with this: “If it ain’t White is ain’t Right. Nobama”

The NYT also has a piece on race in this election today, referencing some of the data you cite in your solid arguments here. http://campaignstops.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/08/27/making-the-election-about-race/?nl=opinion&emc=edit_ty_20120827

39% white 11,661,000 of 29,900,000 recipients

38% black 11,362,000 of 29,900,000

17% Hispanic 5,083,000 of 29,900,000

“There is only one possible explanation for pushing the welfare claim so hard, and for hinting that the change is being implemented to “shore up (Obama’s) base.”…WHITE PEOPLE

White people on welfare…39%…you are truly a hack Jay.

It is kind of funny seeing conservatives rush to offer the “but most people on welfare are white” argument.

The race card has been played so often in the past 15 or so years for pure political reason that is really does not mean anything except to the African American community and the very far leftest. Might I add that this is yet another example.

The sad thing is we really do have clear cases of racism in this nation from time to time and because the Democratic party has used it for nothing more then political gain the real charges are getting ignored as well.

Keep up the good work Dems.

Reading comprehension is a bit lacking…

Please, for all of those talking about who said what about ‘his base,’ please reread the article…slowly…

I don’t think that your typical democrat can percieve the difference.

You got punked by a story about a predator drone strike on a Wisconsin wedding and posted it here as if it was true.

I really appreciate your comedy.
That counter-punk must really burn.

Codes and dog whistles are used that way, as I know you know, Jay. Deniability, even if not really plausible. They trip up when their candidates use “bla.. people” or when local candidates aren’t careful in the code choices. Etc.

They will bitch about a poor man paying 0 % in taxes, but kiss the butt of a wealthy man paying a smaller % than themselves in taxes, that’s a GOP wannabe.
