Sometimes, the apple doesn’t fall far from tree

Here’s a great rollicking blues number to breeze you into the weekend, from a group calling itself “Fistful of Mercy.” The song is “Father’s Son,” which takes on a little bit more significance if you listen closely to the vocals of the first lead singer in the group.

The voice will sound very familiar, and a glance at his equally familiar face will tell you why. It’s Dhani Harrison, son of George, playing with Joseph Arthur and the eclectic Ben Harper. “Fistful of Mercy” has been compared to the older Harrison’s work with “The Traveling Wilburys,” and there’s something about “Father’s Son” — the beat, the orchestration, the harmonies — that do sound very much like George’s work with that “supergroup” and his work in general.

Take a listen.

*********BREAKING NEWS*********************

Arkansas Sends Medical Marijuana Law to the Ballot

If voters approve the measure in November, Arkansas would become the first medical pot state in the South.

“Medical marijuana took one step closer to hitting the South on Wednesday, when Arkansas’ Secretary of State office confirmed that the issue will be on the ballot there this November. Arkansans for Compassionate Care handed in 69,000 valid signatures – well over the necessary 62,507 – for the Arkansas Medical Marijuana Act, which would set up non-profit organizations to cultivate and sell pot, while allowing patients who live more than five miles from a dispensary to grow their own. The November vote will mark the first time that voters in a Southern state can decide whether to legalize medical pot, and could make Arkansas the U.S.’ 18th medical weed state.”

Rest of article: http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/arkansas-sends-medical-marijuana-law-to-the-ballot-20120824

A medical marijuana bill has been introduced in almost every state in the south except Georgia. But Arkansas is the first southern state to allow the people to vote on it. This is an issue that gets NO ATTENTION from the AJC or our state legislature. It’s just ridiculous. Why does Georgia have to be last on everything? Seriously, we just got Sunday alcohol.

November 7 will be an interesting day in this nation. Once again, the liberals have “Out Liberalized” themselves and the country ain’t buying it. The economic numbers are sinking daily and there is no hope of turnaround before election day.

Liberals and progressives just cannot contain themselves whenever they get into power and time after time after time that is their downfall. They want everything now and anything short of that is unacceptable. Clinton suspects that Romney will win this election and he is setting up his wife for 2016 hoping that the damage Obama has done will come to fruition during a republican administration thus leading to her victory. What he apparently does not understand is that the damage Obama has done is so severe that the people of this nation just may not be buying anybody at that point. Hillary understood that she didn’t want any part of Obama for the next four years whether he is in office or not because she knew that it is not going to be pretty. Smart lady.

Downstairs, the question was brought up again about why Blacks support the Democratic Party with more than 90% of Black voters voting for (D)’s. Towncrier brought that question up earlier this week. I tried to point out the Lily White Movement as a beginning point to read up why things are the way they are nowadays. He, just like many others, either don’t know or don’t want to know the historical reasons why today’s vote is the way it is.

I can’t say that’s the definitive reason for today’s support, but it does go to show why the split between Blacks and the GOP began right after Emancipation.

Well, my thanks to Sooth for giving me my wish to hear Randy Travis. And talking about the apple not falling far from the tree, this would of been my great granddaddy’s birthday. He was born in 1861 and they called him Jeff, tho that wasn’t his real name. He got the nickname because when the yankee soldiers went marching by the farm in 1865, he set on a rail fence and yelled “Hurray for Jeff Davis!” Anyhow, when I was a little fellow he would walk up to my grandaddy’s place and set on the front porch, real quiet. Use to walk down that dirt road at the time cars were a new thing. He would walk in the middle of the road, and when one of the new-fangled cars come up behind and honked a horn, he would turn around and give the driver a good cussing, then continue ambling on his way in the middle of the road. Ornery man, but we hit it off. He use to wink at me while he was setting in that rocker. I still miss him after all these decades. This one’s for Grandaddy Jeff, and have a good weekend everybody.

Vanilla Fudge’s 1967 psychedelic/hard rock remake of “You Keep Me Hangin’ On” reached #6 on the Hot 100 chart two years after the release of the Supremes’ recording. While the edited version released on the 45 RPM single was under three minutes long, the album version was six minutes and forty-five seconds long.[clarification needed] The recording, done in one take, was Vanilla Fudge’s first single.[7]

“GEORGIA MOURNS THE PASSING OF HER LAST “REAL SON”

(SAVANNAH – August 21, 2012) On Saturday, August 18, 2012, in the south Georgia town of Terryville, the last surviving “real” son of a Confederate veteran from Georgia passed away. John Charles McDonald, 76 years old at the time of his passing, was the son of James Malachi McDonald (1847-1941) of the 4th Georgia Cavalry during the late War for Southern Independence.

As did so many Southern boys late in the War, James McDonald joined the Confederate army at the young age of 13 years old and served alongside his brothers in the 4th Georgia Cavalry until he was mustered out of the service at the end of the War in 1865 at the ripe old age of 16. Upon returning home from the service, James married and settled down in Montgomery County, Georgia. The last son born to this Confederate veteran was John Charles McDonald, born in 1936 during the Great Depression. John was just a small boy when his father passed away.

John McDonald was the owner of John McDonald Farms and was very well-known for his cultivation and promotion of the Vidalia onion in south Georgia. His passing on Saturday marks the end of an era in Georgia history – an era when children of the actual veterans who fought so gallantly to defend Georgia against the innumerable masses of Yankee invaders still lived to tell the stories of our fathers who now lie in hallowed graves throughout Georgia and beyond.

At the request of the McDonald family, a Confederate funeral ceremony conducted by the Sons of Confederate Veterans will be held for Mr. John Charles McDonald at the Sammons Funeral Home in Soperton, Georgia at 11:00 am on Tuesday, August 21, 2012.

The Georgia Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans join the family of John Charles McDonald in mourning his passing but also in commemorating the honourable heritage left by his generation and that of his parents. The Sons of Confederate Veterans was formed in 1896 by “real” sons of the veterans, themselves, for the purpose of perpetuating their stories, their memories, and the truth about the Cause of liberty and freedom from federal tyranny for which they lived, fought, and died. With the passing of Georgia’s last “real” son, the SCV in Georgia has committed to redoubling its effort to promote the true history of the South and her sons who fought to defend Georgia.”

Or Let it Be is to the Beatles. Over played to the point that no one ever listens to it anymore but if you actually DO listen, you remember why it IS a timeless classic. Unless I’m mistaken, this version was done on the last tour I saw of them, and one of their last. He had AIDS then and knew it. He was so awesome. I don’t know that there has ever been a more talented and versatile artist. Sorry it took so long. I was just listening to a lot of song and tripping down memory lane……

GOP Attorneys General Target Voting Rights Act, Ask Supreme Court To Strike Down Key Section

August 25th, 2012
7:56 am

Several Republican state attorneys general called a key provision of the Voting Rights Act unconstitutional and asked the Supreme Court to strike it down.
The officials from Alabama, Arizona, Georgia, South Carolina, South Dakota and Texas submitted a brief in a closely watched case arguing that the law oversteps federal authority and places an unfair burden on certain states.
The case at issue involves a plan to reshape a district in Shelby County, Ala., a largely white suburb of Birmingham. The new district maps led to the sole black council member in one of the county’s towns losing his seat. But the Justice Department blocked the certification of the voting results, and the town eventually redrew its districts. The black council member later re-won his seat.

Good Morning Music Lovers!

I had a gig last night so I am catching up with the links. A lot of good stuff.

The gig (Spiced Right BBQ) went real good because a lot of people showed up. Lots of cool kids of all ages who seemed to like the Blues.

A friend of mine went to a bar in Houston years ago and the bar handed out a percussion instrument to everyone when they came thru the door. I have been handing out shakers, tambourines, and clave sticks at some of our gigs.

Last night there were so many people, I just gave the kids something to play.
I have two kids, so I have seen how kids light up at Xmas and B`days, but I have never seen reactions like this.

While the band is playing, I walk out from behind the Congas and give a kid something to play.
When I walk over to them, they get this look of Oh No, here he comes! When I give them something to play it`s Oh Yes!
From then on most get a serious look, lock in and try hard to stay on time. When the song ends our guitar player makes it a point to thank the “percusion section” and the looks go from pride to, Hey, maybe I can do this one day.

This is fun stuff. A guy who came to a previous gig with his daughter came up last night and said they had bought a steel drum after coming to our gig. I told him give her a little practice time and we would love to back here up. DAYYYYOOO

My son(drummer) was firing on all cylinders last night. He has a solo in the middle of “One Way Out”.
During his solo the cooks came out of the kitchen banging on pots and pans with metal spoons! Hot damn, Hot Lanta.

Nobody who gets modern music can discount the gargantuan influence of both Dylan and McGuinn. And that awesome coverlinked by Brother Normal at 8:37 proves it.

And my heart always falls a little when I see those pictures of our “boys of the jungle” who came home in flag covered caskets like those in that Marmalade song, that I had long forgotten. But it restores my faith to see real American heroes of valor and sacrifice like Cleland and McCain and many others in those clips who did come home alive.

All you cool cats keep on playing that great music.

—————————————————————————

A pilgrim at the gray of dawn Leaving in the mist of morning On his journey of goodness Heaven sent, God blessed
Pilgrim laughing at the world Spreading joy at the touch of his hand Wiping out all the misery Making love and history
Those of us who don’t know war We shouldn’t try to make it ‘Cause so many did and even more died Do you think you could take it?
‘Cause love lies waiting at our back door Such a beautiful matter of fact Life’s like an apple with love as the core And I’ll tell you ’bout that
Just a man in my prime Love was there but I had no time I was cheered and adored And I thought fame was all the world
Battles won and victory cheers Were the sounds I’d heard for years But the woman I really loved Was losing me to all this blood
I only knew I had to win And build a world where I was king But leaders come and leaders go And that’s the truth I came to know
Love or war I could not choose And so both I had to lose

About 12 years ago my son had a band of 17 year olds and got asked to play a fest at the masquerade.
I get a phone call from Bobby Rush and he wants to borrow our drums for the gig. Oh wow, heck yeah you can use them.
The Jeneffer Nettles Band (later Sugarland) plays in front of our boys.

Well it`s August and hot and this is an outdoor gig. After the boys played my wife is ready to GO.
I tell her we have backstage passes and can go inside the air conditioned club.
She reluctantly goes in, but she ain`t happy. We are standing in the lobby and she is pleading her case to go home. She says, If you don`t slow your life down you are going to look worse than that guy and she points to a guy coming thru the door to the club.
I turn around and Hot Damn!, it`s this guy. He has a show that night at the club and we get to sit thru sound check.
