Sometimes, the apple doesn’t fall far from tree

Here’s a great rollicking blues number to breeze you into the weekend, from a group calling itself “Fistful of Mercy.” The song is “Father’s Son,” which takes on a little bit more significance if you listen closely to the vocals of the first lead singer in the group.

The voice will sound very familiar, and a glance at his equally familiar face will tell you why. It’s Dhani Harrison, son of George, playing with Joseph Arthur and the eclectic Ben Harper. “Fistful of Mercy” has been compared to the older Harrison’s work with “The Traveling Wilburys,” and there’s something about “Father’s Son” — the beat, the orchestration, the harmonies — that do sound very much like George’s work with that “supergroup” and his work in general.

Take a listen.

The UCL draw for groups is on August 30th, and if the Fox Soccer Channel is gonna continue to carry the Tuesday and Wednesday games, I’ll be looking for a place to watch Chelsea play as I don’t have FSC up here in this small hamlet in the N.C. Mtns. (Well, there is a place that has FSC up here but it’s much more fun to watch a game with other fans)

This has to be one of the weirder FNMs since I have been on this blog. I don’t even know if weirder is a word, but spellcheck didn’t object. Perhaps it is because we are heading into the R convention, to be followed shortly by the D convention. “Pollyanna” me wants to hope that we all can come together after the election.

If he hasn’t seen Mix-A-Lot’s video for “Put’em on the Glass”, you’ll need to show that one to him next time you two get together. I’m not linking that one here. I’ve been a Mix fan since he first came out with Square Dance Rap. As for Shawnna, she had a single a long time ago, in the early 90’s and faded away. When she first reappeared, I didn’t realize it was her.

josef: No problems. It’s all you lol. QUeen (Freddy) was such an awesome group. Probably one of the best of our lifetime. What was so funny about them is that when they “came out” it was such a surprise. Like their NAME wasn’t a clue lol?

I tried to find and play my favorite song of theirs, but it’s just impossible. I love so many of them. Bohemian Rhapsody is now to them like Stairway to Heaven is to Led Zeppelin. Or Let it Be is to the Beatles. Over played to the point that no one ever listens to it anymore but if you actually DO listen, you remember why it IS a timeless classic. Unless I’m mistaken, this version was done on the last tour I saw of them, and one of their last. He had AIDS then and knew it. He was so awesome. I don’t know that there has ever been a more talented and versatile artist. Sorry it took so long. I was just listening to a lot of song and tripping down memory lane……

GOP Attorneys General Target Voting Rights Act, Ask Supreme Court To Strike Down Key Section

August 25th, 2012
7:56 am

Several Republican state attorneys general called a key provision of the Voting Rights Act unconstitutional and asked the Supreme Court to strike it down.
The officials from Alabama, Arizona, Georgia, South Carolina, South Dakota and Texas submitted a brief in a closely watched case arguing that the law oversteps federal authority and places an unfair burden on certain states.
The case at issue involves a plan to reshape a district in Shelby County, Ala., a largely white suburb of Birmingham. The new district maps led to the sole black council member in one of the county’s towns losing his seat. But the Justice Department blocked the certification of the voting results, and the town eventually redrew its districts. The black council member later re-won his seat.

Good Morning Music Lovers!

I had a gig last night so I am catching up with the links. A lot of good stuff.

The gig (Spiced Right BBQ) went real good because a lot of people showed up. Lots of cool kids of all ages who seemed to like the Blues.

A friend of mine went to a bar in Houston years ago and the bar handed out a percussion instrument to everyone when they came thru the door. I have been handing out shakers, tambourines, and clave sticks at some of our gigs.

Last night there were so many people, I just gave the kids something to play.
I have two kids, so I have seen how kids light up at Xmas and B`days, but I have never seen reactions like this.

While the band is playing, I walk out from behind the Congas and give a kid something to play.
When I walk over to them, they get this look of Oh No, here he comes! When I give them something to play it`s Oh Yes!
From then on most get a serious look, lock in and try hard to stay on time. When the song ends our guitar player makes it a point to thank the “percusion section” and the looks go from pride to, Hey, maybe I can do this one day.

This is fun stuff. A guy who came to a previous gig with his daughter came up last night and said they had bought a steel drum after coming to our gig. I told him give her a little practice time and we would love to back here up. DAYYYYOOO

My son(drummer) was firing on all cylinders last night. He has a solo in the middle of “One Way Out”.
During his solo the cooks came out of the kitchen banging on pots and pans with metal spoons! Hot damn, Hot Lanta.

Nobody who gets modern music can discount the gargantuan influence of both Dylan and McGuinn. And that awesome coverlinked by Brother Normal at 8:37 proves it.

And my heart always falls a little when I see those pictures of our “boys of the jungle” who came home in flag covered caskets like those in that Marmalade song, that I had long forgotten. But it restores my faith to see real American heroes of valor and sacrifice like Cleland and McCain and many others in those clips who did come home alive.

A pilgrim at the gray of dawn Leaving in the mist of morning On his journey of goodness Heaven sent, God blessed
Pilgrim laughing at the world Spreading joy at the touch of his hand Wiping out all the misery Making love and history
Those of us who don’t know war We shouldn’t try to make it ‘Cause so many did and even more died Do you think you could take it?
‘Cause love lies waiting at our back door Such a beautiful matter of fact Life’s like an apple with love as the core And I’ll tell you ’bout that
Just a man in my prime Love was there but I had no time I was cheered and adored And I thought fame was all the world
Battles won and victory cheers Were the sounds I’d heard for years But the woman I really loved Was losing me to all this blood
I only knew I had to win And build a world where I was king But leaders come and leaders go And that’s the truth I came to know
Love or war I could not choose And so both I had to lose

About 12 years ago my son had a band of 17 year olds and got asked to play a fest at the masquerade.
I get a phone call from Bobby Rush and he wants to borrow our drums for the gig. Oh wow, heck yeah you can use them.
The Jeneffer Nettles Band (later Sugarland) plays in front of our boys.

Well it`s August and hot and this is an outdoor gig. After the boys played my wife is ready to GO.
I tell her we have backstage passes and can go inside the air conditioned club.
She reluctantly goes in, but she ain`t happy. We are standing in the lobby and she is pleading her case to go home. She says, If you don`t slow your life down you are going to look worse than that guy and she points to a guy coming thru the door to the club.
I turn around and Hot Damn!, it`s this guy. He has a show that night at the club and we get to sit thru sound check.
