Ayn Rand, Paul Ryan and the issue of morality

aynrand_AF

In a more fact-based world, the centrality of Ayn Rand to Paul Ryan’s perspective on the world would be undeniable. She is, so to speak, the fountainhead from which much of his political thought flows. But rather than take my word for it, listen to Ryan himself, just three short years ago, laying it out explicitly in back-to-back videos prepared by his congressional campaign:

For those unable to watch the video, the earnest Ryan says, among other things:

“What’s unique about what’s happening today in government and in the world and America is that it’s as if we are living in an Ayn Rand novel right now. … I think Ayn Rand did more than anybody to build a moral case for capitalism, the morality of individualism, and this to me is what matters most.”

Again, Ryan’s voluntary, unprovoked and clearly heartfelt profession of Randian philosophy came in 2009, just three years ago, and it is just one in a long string of public expressions by Ryan of his loyalty to and faith in Rand’s philosophy.

More recently, of course, Ryan has attempted to pretend that none of that has occurred, proclaiming it “urban legend” that he had been influenced by Rand and claiming to “reject her philosophy.” However, if that’s true, this sudden change of heart has not been accompanied by any matching change in Ryan’s political outlook. It remains today what it was when he was still willing to publicly celebrate Rand’s claim to moral authority.

Why is this relevant? Well, Randian philosophy — “objectivism” they call it — is to my mind soft-headed, romantic claptrap that attempts vainly to masquerade as hard-headed, pragmatic economic theory. Its appeal is emotional, not intellectual. And while for individual persons, particularly young people, Rand’s work may be effective as a “self-help philosophy” and motivational tool, as the basis of a society or economic system it would be profoundly impractical and even cruel.

That shouldn’t be a surprise, of course, given that Rand rejected the existence of society in the first place. In fact, she treated the very notion of social responsibility as a conspiracy by which the weak parasites of the world attempt to seize the products of the strong and virile creators. In the video above, Ryan clearly buys into that world view, arguing that Randian individualism represents “the moral foundation of America.”

On that count, I personally find the witness of Thomas Jefferson more convincing, given that he helped to lay the foundation in question. Even back in Jefferson’s day, “self-interest, or rather self-love, or egoism” was being proposed by some as the basis of morality, but the drafter of the Declaration of Independence was having none of it.

Self-love, Jefferson warned, “is no part of morality. Indeed it is exactly its counterpart. It is the sole antagonist of virtue, leading us constantly by our propensities to self-gratification in violation of our moral duties to others…. Take from man his selfish propensities, and he can have nothing to seduce him from the practice of virtue.”

Ryan’s background also plays into the problem. Like his running mate, he is a child born into relative wealth and privilege. That does not make either Ryan or Mitt Romney evil, wrong, foolish or misguided. To the contrary, their shared background says nothing at all about their personal character or leadership abilities.

It must, however, affect their perspective, just as being born into poverty or struggle affects the perspective of those who experience the world from that end of things.

Knowing that you have been born into that rarified world, with all the advantage that it confers, ought to make you a little humble about lecturing others about lifting themselves up by their bootstraps. It ought to make you a little less arrogant about your own success, and a little more sympathetic toward those to whom raw luck has been a little less kind. It should make you acknowledge, to yourself if no one else, that you stand where you stand in part because of factors over which you have had no control, and to understand that others stand where they stand in part because of factors over which they too have had no control.

However, in Ryan’s political rhetoric and policy pronouncements there is little evidence of the leavening power of humility. The philosophy of Rand has served to inoculate him and others against such dark thoughts, whispering in their ears the reassurance that that their success is testament only to their own merit, and freeing them of any obligation to assist others.

I don’t accept that argument. It is antithetical to human nature and to thousands of years of human history in which the individual has had responsibilities to the group, and the group has had responsibilities to the individual. The genius of the American system in particular has been its ability to create a workable, ethical balance between those competing responsibilities.

The “morality” that Ryan proposes would toss that balance aside, creating a system the likes of which has never been seen, and which would meet no definition of the word “moral” that I, or Jefferson, would accept.

You know the economy is tough when two younger women just over the age of 21 are trying to get you to be their sugar daddy. Two things wrong with this:

1) I’m not wealthy
2) I’m not THAT old

Apparently, a man covered in flour and driving a late 90’s model BMW is a show of wealth…or flash.

“So Doomy, who is your QB?”

We got the same guy back who led us to the national title.

“Any good receivers?” Yep. Lots of em.

“How about running backs?” 4 deep at the running back position. The guy replacing Richardson actually had more yards per carry the last 2 years than Richardson. Over 7 ypc which is astounding in college football.

“I have no doubt whatsoever that Alabama crushes Michigan defensively, i just don’t know who you have on offense to score.”

We have a mammoth O-line that is the best in the nation. 3 starters are projected 1st round picks. All 5 will be in the pros and the only new starter is a kid that will be gone in 3 years. He was the nation’s no. 2 recruit coming out of high school. Kid is a monster.

“Off hand I would take Bama and 13 but before I plunk down a grand, I wanna KNOW.”

If little ole Doomy plunks down a grand Fred should do 5k.

Hpw does that go over with ose GOP bible thumpers??? When the Catholic Church put Ryan on the carpet for espousing her beliefs, he did a Romney back flip and summersault disavowing Rand. She is also a hypocrite of GOP genre, railing against all public benefits and then accepted Medicare and social security benefits.

bman,

In my broker days I had a friend who did pretty well but wasn’t super rich. He had the habit of attracting gold diggers even though he wasn’t that monied. Anyway, a common tactic of his was that he would pick up a girl take her to lunch and tell her before lunch that he had to see a real estate agent to look at some houses he was interested in buying. Well invariably either she would ask if she could come along or he would say “Hey my realtor find a house that she thinks meets my needs. Do you mind if we stop by and take a look real quick since its on the way?” Well he had the realtor showing him multi-million dollar mansions in Buckhead and of course the girls were caught hook, line, and sinker. You can imagine the rest of the story and the typical ending where he would kick them to the curb, call block them, and he did all this without them ever knowing where he worked or seeing his real house which was a nice house on the lake but not a 2 million dollar Buckhead mansion.

Yeah. The first game last year was a defensive slugfest but keep in mind we missed 4 field goals in that game and turned the ball over at the 1 yd line. We moved the ball consistently and nearly doubled up LSU in total yardage but just didn’t finish drives and then again there was the matter of all them missed field goals. Both teams will again field great defenses.

There is a difference between agreeing with much of Rand says about certain principles and being *influenced* in some sinister way. Mr Bookman seems to be earnestly trying to validate the *you didn’t build that* screed of Obama and Warren. Individual sovereignty is the only moral stance—any other condones slavery of one sort or another. Ayn Rand lived under the slavery of collectivism and one does not have to adopt her embrace of atheism to see truth in much of her philosophy. Ryan is a devout catholic. His family may have been relatively well off, but he worked he grill at a MacDonald’s beginning in his sophomore year in high school. He does seem to have been surrounded by supportive and loving family and friends. He has received praise from colleagues on both sides of the aisle in Congress. I don’t think he is some sort of amoral monster who threatens Mr Bookman’s universe.

And then on Friday Tennessee vs NC State and Boise State VS Michigan State will tell us something as well.

Saturday the only half way decent game other than Bama and Michigan is BC vs Miami.

I dunno why they even bother to schedule the two meaningless games on Sunday (Kentucky vs Louisville and Baylor vs SMU) but the Monday game, GT vs VaTech could be interesting.

He said she was the most beautful women he had ever seen in his life. A young man in his 20s comes up to her and starts playing in the surf and hanging out with her. Next thing Jim knows the young man comes up to him cause the girl saw him taking photos of her. He asked Jim if he was American and was told by the girl to tell Jim that he could have her if he wanted her as long as he would take her back to America as his wife or girlfriend. He politely declined and the young man was ecstatic about it since he now had a shot at pursuing her. To the young man it was not even that big a deal since he knew he couldn’t compete with American money. Jim was 65. Good thing for her it wasn’t evil ole Doomy…

I agree 100% and that part is all I really care about.

Ayn Rand’s work is very comforting in the new age of narcissistic a-holes, but her life proved how much of a joke it and they are. Just once again proves that the new age conservative doesn’t actually have a philosophy, its just lame justifications for instant gratification.

Our host’s essay is perfect evidence of the immorality of leftism – the attack on Ryan does not critique any policy he has advocated, nor any legislation he has proffered, but is a conventional leftist exploration into the politics of personal destruction. “Ryan ought not be president because he is evil.” The usual leftist argument.

We’re trying to get the joke out of the White House. Maybe you could try helping solve the problem…

Does it make you feel patriotic to belittle our Country this much? Make you feel like a REAL man? I’m just curious. YOU and crap like THIS is the reason the rest of the world won’t take us serious.

Ayn Rand often said that she believed altruism to be evil. As a disciple of Rand, Ryan exhibits his agreement with Rand through both his budget and many of his political actions. His claims to be a follower of St. Thomas Aquinas are foolish. If you read Aquinas’ beliefs on society and state (the Polis), you find that he believed we all owe each other whatever is necessary for a quality of life. Paul Ryan does not begin to exhibit that belief.

If he thinks we are living in her fictitious world, he should be in a mental institution.

He got stumped on fox today but corporate media gave him a free pass as usual.

I’ve passed on all Moore’s movies and will do the same for this work of fiction.

Maybe I will catch it on the Sci Fi channel when they run it along with ET and Star Wars

D’Souza did, however, tell a compelling story of how Obama’s ideology was formed by a biological father he barely knew.

I’ve been scratching my head at that particular phrase all day. I had an uncle that served in the Marines (I think) on Iwo Jima. I barely knew him as he died when I was 3 years old. I’ve heard numerous stories about him over the years, yet I can’t see how he would shape my ideology at all.

My male DNA donor, on the other hand, is a politician that I have a bit more familiarity with, even though I can’t say that I know enough about him to say I really know him. He has, however, shaped my ideology to the point that I don’t trust politicians any farther than I can throw them. Unlike Obama, I have had numerous run-ins with him at various stages of my life.

I can’t quite grasp how someone could be influenced by a person they rarely had contact with, but I can see how one would be somewhat influenced by a person of importance not being in your life. I also have to remember that a story can be “compelling” or maybe even “believable” without being rooted in fact. I may decide to read that book at some point in the future, but I’d much rather hear what ideas are on the table now.

I always wonder whether columnists know what they write about. Has our host read Atlas Shrugged? I have, of course. I acknowledge that I have doubts about objectivism, but I have no doubt about the quality of the Randian expose of the inherent immorality of leftism in Atlas. Nobody who has read Atlas can embrace leftism, as leftism is mobocracy, based on emotion rather than on anything intellectual.

Really? So putting an end to slave labor and forced child labor is merely an emotional exercise?

Really? Do you even read the crap you write or do you just copy paste it from the meth ho’s fan site?

Thanks, Recon, I’ll add Ryan to that lonnnng list (I think it started with BibleSpice, it’s included such Presidential luminaries as Herman Cain and Donald Freakin’ Trump) of people I’m supposedly “terrified” of.

Conservatism/Capitalism seeks to give everyone equal opportunity and to bring people to the best level of prosperity obtainable. No system in the history of the world has done better.

Liberalism/Socialism seeks to give everyone equal outcomes and to bring people down to the level of shared misery. The history of the world is full of systems that have done just that.
