You want to know what the election is about? Here’s what the election is about:
“The tax plan proposed by Rep. Paul Ryan (Wis.), the newly minted GOP vice presidential candidate, would have slashed Mitt Romney’s effective tax rate to about 1 percent in 2010, based on Romney’s tax return that year, according to a Roll Call analysis.
The Ryan tax cut, which would shave about 90 percent off of Romney’s tax bill, would result from the Wisconsin Republican’s “Roadmap for America’s Future” proposal to eliminate taxes on capital gains, dividends and interest. Since about 95 percent of Romney’s $21.6 million income came from those sources in 2010, he would pay no taxes on the vast majority of his earnings. It’s not certain exactly how low Romney’s tax bill would go, but his income from other sources amounts to about $1 million, and Ryan’s plan would set a new top rate of 25 percent. Romney’s total tax bill would have dropped from the $3 million that he paid to a few hundred thousand dollars if Ryan’s plan had been in effect.
Ryan also proposes eliminating the estate tax, which would benefit Romney’s heirs by tens of millions of dollars.”
If you can take Ryan’s plan, apply it to Romney’s 2010 tax return, and come up with any other conclusion, please do so. Otherwise, this stands as the perfect illustration of what Ryan, Romney and their fellow Republicans hope to accomplish in office, and what values drive their policy choices. Slash Medicaid, slash Medicare and slash Mitt Romney’s taxes to almost nothing, while raising them on the lowest-earning 30 percent of Americans.

Bottom line folks, Mitt Romney is wealthy. I would rather have a wealthy man stand for election than a poor person. Unfortunately, in this country a middle class person cannot be elected to any office higher than city council. And yes, our current President is wealthy too.

You’ve moved the goalposts again.
First it was the elements in Jay’s post were lies.
You did not say why.
Then it was Ryan did not call for elimination of capital gains. When his Roadmap was pointed out, you said he wants ‘fairness’ and would not say which capital gains rate Ryan favors. Do you even know?
Now you’re onto how many times are earnings taxes.
_____________________________________
This is the pattern: make an assertion, when asked to back it up, use generalities like ‘fairness’ and asset the other person is wrong, then introduce a new topic (move the goalposts).

Joseph: If you get right down to it, all money is taxed more than once somewhere along the line. But if we are talking about income (personal income) here is what should happen:
-Government taxes the incoming amount per year at a rate determined by brackets, like the progressive income tax does on most people.
-Any income invested should not be taxed, but any gains on that income should be, at the rate of the progressive tax system. In other words, if you invest 1 million and you get back over 250k somehow, your money gets taxed at the rates nearly all the way up the chain, first 7k or so is 10%, next is 15%, next amount 25%, and so on. This is NOT to be separated from your regular income (i.e. if you made 1 dollar in regular income and $250,000, your tax rates would be in the progressive tax system on $250,001, NOT tax the $1, then tax the $250,000 as though it is somehow separate)
What does NOT happen now is that last part. Instead, gains are taxed at a flat rate, separate of other income.

Q: Do 40 percent of Americans pay no taxes?
A: About 38 percent of households have zero or negative income tax liability, but they pay other federal taxes.
http://www.factcheck.org/2008/11/americans-paying-no-taxes/
The Congressional Budget Office found that earners in the lowest quintile, where most of those with no income tax liability fall, shouldered 4.3 percent of the payroll tax burden in 2005 and 11.1 percent of the excise taxes. Their effective tax rate (which is calculated by dividing taxes paid by total income) in those categories, according to the CBO, was in fact significantly higher than the rate of the top quintile, although that top one-fifth of the population had a much higher effective tax rate for individual and corporate income taxes.

Joseph: Obama put out a plan to extend the cuts for everyone, but allowing the tax rates on every dollar you make AFTER 250k to rise back to Clinton levels. That is his plan, and the Dem plan. The GOP plan is simply “The Bush Tax Cuts Or More Tax Cuts”
Now, Congress will obviously fight about this so much that really we go #OffTheCliff, but I think that’s good for the country because then the GOP will immediately reverse and backdate an extension of tax cuts, but ONLY on the first $250k. Ergo, everyone wins, because the GOP will not be forced to “vote to raise taxes,” and will instead just let the initial thing expire.
Then they can call the tax cuts “The Obama Tax Cuts” and blame him for bad tax cutting policy. But they probably won’t, since that would be making them look bad.

“The President’s 2013 Budget is built around the idea that our country does best when everyone gets a fair shot, does their fair share, and plays by the same rules. We must transform our economy from one focused on speculating, spending, and borrowing to one constructed on the solid foundation of educating, innovating, and building. That begins with putting the Nation on a path to living within our means – by cutting wasteful spending, asking all Americans to shoulder their fair share, and making tough choices on some things we cannot afford, while keeping the investments we need to grow the economy and create jobs. The Budget targets scarce federal resources to the areas critical to growing the economy and restoring middle-class security: education and skills for American workers, innovation and research and development, clean energy, and infrastructure.”

Should dividends be taxed at a high rate supposedly just because rich people get them? What about people on fixed income who rely on these payments?
Dividends are paid from earnings (unless the money is borrowed) by companies after those companies have paid tax on those earnings. To tax them again is double taxation, so doesn’t that argue for no, or a very low tax on dividends? What is the justification for a divident tax rate equivalent to a regular income tax rate?
From a person who has paid inheritance tax, when the threshold was much lower, it is a cruel tax. I bet that everyone who thinks otherwise would change their mind if they were faced with it. It’s easy to provide an opinion that someone else should pay, it’s quite another when it’s you.

Joseph — “You may not like his idea’s but he is putting forth something. Obama and the dems have put forth nothing!”
Really? Try this on for size.
You may not like the Affordable Care Act, but Obama and the Democrats have put forth something. Romney and the Republicans have put forth nothing except 31 votes to repeal — and no mention yet of what they’d “replace” it with.
