The swing has been tied to all the negative and baseless ads that the Obama campaign has been putting out; but they have been effective regardless of facts no doubt. Just wait until after the GOP convention and the Romney campaign can access their general election funds…look out as it is going to get really nasty at that point which is sad for the country but at least the playing field will be somewhat balanced…

Jay cited the FoxNews poll, he didn’t say the results must be true because Fox reported it. Jay is no fool.
The president is smart to define Romney now because when Rove and company unlease their billion $$ lie campaign three weeks before the election, few will vote for Obama who “kidnapped his mother”, “robbed the Catholic charity at gun point”,
“pulled his children’s legs off and ate them”, and who knows what else they will manufacture. This is their MOS. Couple that with the wide spread voter suppression tactics around the country, anything can happen.

Well if you follow Rasmussen and Gallup, you might want to check out thier EC projections.

Neither of them have Romney leading and while close, Obama is leading in most of the swing states in their polls

Next month will be wait until October

Then it will be wait until the election

you get the picture

(not that Jay was saying Mitt *should* panic–the point of Jay’s piece, that the 2012 primary history is worth revisiting, is utterly valid.)

Anyhow, the money quote from Nate if you’re interested:

I do not bring up the dressage in an attempt to demean the person or to belittle one with the disease. In fact, I merely bring it up in the context of the tax deduction that may be claimed by one with sufficient means and try to associate it with the portion of Mitt’s tax plan whereby he wishes to give those of his stature yet another tax cut while not increasing taxes on those of lesser value and also maintaining revenue neutrality. Surely, he has discussed the prospect of losing that medical expense writeoff with his better half and been thoroughly rebuked for daring to even consider its elimination. So, what are his other options. Cut the tax writeoff for tithes? I think not…

You understand that the real reason Republican party bigs got the Gingrich/Perry “vulture capital” line of attack shut down had nothing to do with sparing the Romney candidacy of criticism don’t you? Recall that at the time Occupy was still very fresh on the minds of people and causing no small amount of fear in the ruling class, of BOTH parties – recall the directives that went out by operatives like Douglas Schoen, for ex. So it was not so much Republican leaders shutting down the “vulture capitalism” line as it was the ruling class per se acting through its GOP wing and on behalf of its Wall St. masters that could not under any circumstances allow a line of attack to get out of hand in a campaign that could risk triggering a wider movement among the population, which could have been a real danger if it had been allowed to become a defining theme WITHIN a REPUBLICAN primary, of all things. That simply could not be tolerated. That’s why you had GOP pooh-bahs behind the scene working to get that stamped out pron-TO, and on the Dem side the usual DLC hit men doing their part. It was about CLASS, not a single candidate.

Not long ago, someone posted a link to a U.S. map, with each state identified by how it’s predicted to vote. The electoral votes were 267 for Obama, 191 for Romney, with 80 still uncertain. Consider this scenario: Romney wins the nationwide popular vote (questionable, but plausible), and Obama wins California (virtually certain). Under legislation passed and signed about a year ago, California’s 55 electoral votes will go to Romney, despite the majority of Californians voting for Obama. That would change the above totals to 212 for Obama and 246 for Romney. Conventional wisdom says that Romney has to win all the swing states to win the election; I’m not so sure.

Good points. From what I’ve been able to glean from his very generalized tax proposal, that kind of deduction, or a further increase in the ceiling on medical deductions, could very well be on the chopping block.

I trust you see my point, also – that for an awful lot of people, it wasn’t about what therapy works and what wasn’t, it was more along the lines of “they’re trying to justify THAT s a tax deduction? You gotta be kidding me” when it was already a permitted deduction.

Interesting you agreed several months ago that the state of the economy would dictate the election outcome. Notice that the 1.5% GDP is positive. That means that the economy is headed in the right direction. When you see this -1.5%, that means the economy is not headed in the right direction.
I believe GDP was in negative territory the last time we had a Repub in the white house.

What this is really about is reflected in the Daily Kos article so similar to your post: “”I don’t think Americans should be subsidizing this…” But it’s not about the tax law – it’s all about the people who avail themselves of legal deductions.

There have already been posts this morning detailing how the IRA could get to that level. Legally. But again, it’s not about being legal, is it? It’s about condemning a person for following laws one doesn’t like.

Perhaps you’d like to channel some of that ire into persuading the administration to submit a comprehensive tax-reform proposal? You know, like maybe even appointing a commission to recommend changes? They might even recommend eliminating such deductions and increasing rates on the very wealthy!

Pres Obama could appoint a number of people to it. Might even get Bowles and Simpson to head it up.

Why is Rasmussen the only poll that does not oversample democrats by 10%? I think we can agree that democrats will vote for Obama, and republicans will vote for Romney. The only real question is whether the dithering middle would prefer another four years of leftism, or whether they would prefer a president with some minimal competence in economics.

To clarify, I do not care for the strategy of demonizing a person because they availed themselves of all deductions provided by law. The fault, if there is any, is with Congress and the law, not the taxpayer.

I have faulted Pres Obama for not embracing at least part of Simpson-Bowles. Would the Republican House have shut off any efforts at such reform? Of course. But it would at least have demonstrated leadership on the President’s part to forge ahead with such proposals.

Well, y’all can hold out hope for Romney if you want to, but me, I’m planning to be off of Bookman’s blog the day after the election so I won’t have to hear from No. 1 Foxy Lady. I got a wife and a boss. I don’t need a third person to tell me to go f*** myself. Like I said before, Romney couldn’t get a date if he was the only man on a island with the Women Marines.

Anyhow, I’m hauling and lugging and trying to get you ready to swap weird music tonight. Sorry I ain’t been on here alot in the past couple days. I been keeping track of this PGA tournament over in S. Carolina. Those pros sure play by weird rules. They even putt the ball if they’re only a couple feet from the cup. Heck, me and my buddy Jim Earl and my other buddy Joe Bill use the one-putt rule and we sometimes use a tee from the fairway, but don’t tell Sooth that, he’ll run and blab to the course ranger and try and get us kicked off of the course.

Both parties have more in common than not…they both take half truths to lambast opponents, they both align equally with special interests, they both sell the fact that they can control employment, wall street, lobbyist et al but they truly have little to no power over each and continue to (remember President Trillions “the days of lobbyist controlling DC agenda are over..”…he quickly turned into same old politician..no different from Bush and other predecessors) be defined by campaign funds vs what is good for the people.

Congress is the problem…they are now totally indebted to cash from special interests..they are supposed to represent us but with only 16% approval (on a good day), clearly their interests don’t lie with us….until we get balance budget amendment and limit and amendment to eliminate private campaign funds relying totally on tax dollars…not a thing will change regardless which dope occupies WH.

Fred, I am not a big fan of Huffsterical Post either, but in this case the numbers come from the individual pollsters and have links to the results.

Looking at the results it is easy to see why Rasmussen results favor Republicans, they are currently the only pollster that has Republicans with party id edge.

The trend seems to be away from both parties, more people now consider themselves to be independent.

Rasmussen also deliberately skews its numbers towards what they THINK the turnout will be on Election Day. In other words, they use a made-up multiplier. Did you know that?

“The polls will begin to reflect a more accurate condition by late September. I follow Gallup and Rasmussen the others in my opinion are no where near as accurate.”

Unless you have any statistical grounding, I fail to see why your opinion has anything to do with their *actual* accuracy.

I see you are back to giving hell to folks on both sides of the aisle. Its always fun to watch and worth the price of admission if its only a round of beer. I would disagree with you on the Huffington post or on several far right and far left sites.

There is some good info on Huffpo as well as far right or left sites. Not all the articles on those sites are BS. The thing is that whether left or right they tend to cover stories that are often true but which support their particular narrative of course. Or they just cover some stories that the dominant media doesn’t have the time and space to cover- they can’t report everything. I just think people have to sift through the BS stuff that is pure unsupported opinion and focus on reading about actual events that the dominant media may have just missed.

The GOP is going to select electors who will vote for Romney and there is nothing any voter does that will make a difference. We are as red a state as you can get.The campaign is irrelevant for the presidency in this state. Until the electoral college is abolished and the popular vote determines the presidential election, we do not have a true democracy. Picking electors was left up to the state legislatures in the Constitution back when states had more power.
The same for picking Senators – it was left to the states legislatures or governors to pick Senators . Then we got a constitutional amendment for popular voting of Senators. Maybe we should abolish that amendment – no special interests holding dollars over the Senators heads- just beholden to the state government. Can’t be any worse than what we got now

The only con I listen to on the radio from time to time is probably Limbaugh and he doesn’t come on till 1 in the afternoon. Beck I don’t think is even on the radio and he’s boring anyway. Now I will listen to Boortz on occasion as its priceless when a liberal calls in and Boortz just skewers him and makes him realize just how dumb he sounds. I get in an hour or 2 of Limbaugh a week maybe but haven’t heard any Boortz in a month or 2. But I think the real reason I don’t listen to much con radio is all the commercials. Wayyy to many relative to just regular music channels so why listen.

Equestrian therapy has been on the rise for a few years now. I briefly dated one girl years back who owned a business doing just that. They didn’t work with MS people though. They worked with kids who had a variety of behavioral and emotional problems and who came from really bad backgrounds. It sure seemed to work wonders for them from what she was telling me.

The write off for Ann Romney’s $77,000 saddle gear is fair game just due to the sheer expense of the gear. But mocking a therapy that is showing itself to be beneficial for a number of people from different backgrounds who suffer from a variety of ailments isn’t.

Yesterday Thomas Nelson pulled “The Jefferson Lies” off the market due to

It seems that Barton, an influential republican, is scheduled to speak at the republican convention later this month. If the GOP has any hope of maintaining the facade of an actual political party and not an evangelical religious party dedicated to ignorance and falsehood surely they will give Barton the boot.

Nate Silver has given pretty consistent upward trends to Obama’s chances of winning. Today, Obama has a 73.3% chance of winning the electoral vote with 50.9% of the popular vote.

On June 26, he had a 61.1% chance. The NEXT DAY he had a 65.1% chance. That trend held until this past week, when he jumped again to a new high.

Nope. We play at Tiger stadium. That’s OUR house! In one of the great streaks in college football Alabama went unbeaten in 19 games at LSU from 1969 until Nick Saban finally beat Alabama in 2004. LSU won again in 06 playing against a probation reduced Bama team under Mike Shula. Otherwise the LSU win in 2010 is pretty much the only time besides Saban that an LSU team has defeated an Alabama team at full strength in its own stadium since 1969. We own that stadium just like we own the alltime head to head series with LSU 46-25 nearly doubling up the tiggers.

There isn’t a very good “check and balance” on the left wing.

I agree, but not in the way most think.

When you have an increasingly radicalized right wing in this country, which is already fundamentally plutocratic and anti-democratic, it is only natural for the center of the opposition party to drift rightward as well.

This is something that people just don’t seem to get.

Obama’s shortcomings don’t stem from him being too nutty-lefty-loopy; his problems is that so much of his Administration is happy to work with all the executive power delegated to the Bush Administration, hence the kill lists, the surveillance, the failure to try international terrorists in regular ol’ civilian courts and, obviously, hence the willingness to negotiate the PPACA from the Blue-dog center (those weak-ass “Public Option” programs, which were quickly surrendered, rather than a robust single payer as a starting point) rather than the Bernie Saunders left.

How embarrassing this must be for President Obama, whose major speech theme so far this campaign season has been that every single American, no matter how rich, should pay their “fair share” of taxes.

Because how unfair — indeed, un-American — it is for an office worker like, say, Warren Buffet’s secretary to dutifully pay her taxes, while some well-to-do people with better educations and higher incomes end up paying a much smaller tax rate.

Or, worse, skipping their taxes altogether.

A new report just out from the Internal Revenue Service reveals that 36 of President Obama’s executive office staff owe the country $833,970 in back taxes. These people working for Mr. Fair Share apparently haven’t paid any share, let alone their fair share.

Previous reports have shown how well-paid Obama’s White House staff is, with 457 aides pulling down more than $37 million last year. That’s up seven workers and nearly $4 million from the Bush administration’s last year.

Nearly one-third of Obama’s aides make more than $100,000 with 21 being paid the top White House salary of $172,200, each.

The IRS’ 2010 delinquent tax revelations come as part of a required annual agency report on federal employees’ tax compliance. Turns out, an awful lot of folks being paid by taxpayers are not paying their own income taxes.

The report finds that thousands of federal employees owe the country more than $3.4 billion in back taxes. That’s up 3% in the past year.

That scale of delinquency could annoy voters, hard-pressed by their own costs, fears and stubbornly high unemployment despite Joe Biden’s many promises.

The tax offenders include employees of the U.S. Senate who help write the laws imposed on everyone else. They owe $2.1 million. Workers in the House of Representatives owe $8.5 million, Department of Education employees owe $4.3 million and over at Homeland Security, 4,697 workers owe about $37 million. Active duty military members owe more than $100 million.

The Treasury Department, where Obama nominee Tim Geithner had to pay up $42,000 in his own back taxes before being confirmed as secretary, has 1,181 other employees with delinquent taxes totaling $9.3 million.

As usual, the Postal Service, with more than 600,000 workers, has the most offenders (25,640), who also owe the most — almost $270 million. Veterans Affairs has 11,659 workers owing the IRS $151 million while the Energy Department that was so quick to dish out more than $500 million to the Solyndra folks has 322 employees owing $5 million.

The country’s chief law enforcement agency, the Department of Justice, has 2,069 employees who are nearly $17 million behind in taxes. Like Operation Fast and Furious, Attorney General Eric Holder has apparently missed them too.

As with ordinary people, the IRS attempts to negotiate back-tax payment plans with all delinquents, whose names cannot be released. But according to current federal law, the only federal employees who can be fired for not paying taxes are IRS workers.

It is not over and I can see where Obama doesn’t get the popular vote, but I am leaning toward him winning.

He will get thumped really bad in many red states, which will pile up the popular vote. Win big in a few blue states and close in a few others as well as close in enough swing states to win.

Of course I could be 100% wrong, but unless something changes (the debates being the key), there seems to be too many “if this happens” or “if that happens” for Romney to pull it off

Nate Silver has some calculations on not winning the popular vote, but winning the electoral vote, as well. He predicts the likelihood of Obama winning the electoral college, but not also the popular vote, is 1.1% chance. Romney has a 4.5% chance of winning the electoral college but losing the popular vote.

Yeah. Me too. I’m a piker now which means a small guy. The most I ever bet was I had bet $800 on Boise St twice and bet $500 on them once or twice also. I am forever grateful to Boise since they have been a covering machine for me. Otherwise I used to bet $200- $300 a game as a standard but now I bet much lower. In one of my offshore accounts I’ve been betting $5-$10 a game lately on baseball when I can remember to do it. Its just fun of course and really just messing around just to see how I do. Its not really worth the time but I just like to see how I do on baseball which is really just throwing a dart at a board I think.

Actually, they won’t even go that far unless you had a tax *liability* and didn’t file. If your withholding was more than the IRS calculates your tax liability to be, it’s unlikely that you’ll hear from them. That said, it’s a good idea to file anyway, even if you don’t owe anything. The IRS-calculated return isn’t very detailed and is likely to miss deductions that you’re entitled to. So file your return and get the whole refund that you’re entitled to.

Well it is a Huge Deal when a Democrat is in the White House, you see.

When a Republican is there, the conservatives can go back to claiming it’s patriotic not to pay your taxes, if they can be bothered to notice in the first place.

By the way, isn’t it interesting that this tax information is, apparently, available to be scrutinized? Maybe it’d be nice to know what kind of taxes the GOP’s Presidential aspirant might’ve paid over the past several years, as well.
