What Gingrich, Santorum, etc. got right about Romney
Back in the heat of the primary season, Republican leaders grew very uneasy when Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum and Rick Perry began to attack Mitt Romney as an out-of-touch rich guy who built his wealth through “vulture capitalism” (Rick Perry’s term) and was hiding something in his taxes. Among other concerns, GOP leaders recognized that if such attacks on Romney worked, they might end up with Gingrich, Santorum or Perry as their nominee.
That was not an outcome they were willing to risk, so they quickly ruled that line of attack out of bounds.
These days, however, they may be reaping the consequences of that decision. The latest CNN poll has Barack Obama pulling out to a seven-point lead over Romney. Ipsos/Reuters also puts the margin at seven, while Fox News puts it at nine. And as Fox notes, the internals are more worrisome still for Romney:
“Obama’s advantage comes largely from increased support among independents, who now pick him over Romney by 11 percentage points. Some 30 percent of independents are undecided. Last month, Obama had a four-point edge among independents, while Romney had the advantage from April through early June….
“The Obama campaign has spent heavily on advertising attacking Romney’s time at Bain Capital and his tax returns. And it appears to be working. Romney’s favorable rating dropped six percentage points since last month and now sits at 46 percent, down from 52 percent in mid-July. At the same time his unfavorable rating went up five points. Romney’s favorable rating has held steady among his party faithful, but it’s down eight percentage points among independents and seven points among Democrats.”
Moreover, Fox notes, Obama outpolls Romney by eight percentage points on the question of which man is more likely to help people achieve the American dream, which constitutes the foundation of the Romney strategy. And the erosion of support isn’t limited to the party’s nominees:
“While Democrats typically hold a slight edge over Republicans nationally in party identification, this attitude shifts based on events and changing sentiment. These days, voters seem to be even more likely to consider themselves Democrats than Republicans. There has been a five-percentage-point Democratic advantage, on average, in Fox News polls this year. In this poll, the Democratic edge is nine points. That may or may not be on the high side, although it is similar to other recent national polls conducted by NBC News and the Wall Street Journal, which put Democrats up 11 percentage points, and the Pew Research Center, with Democrats up by 13 percent.”
(In a humorous aside, only one major polling outfit in the last three weeks — the ever-reliable Rasmussen — has Romney leading, with the former Massachusetts governor up by four. See below.)

It’s still early, of course — the campaign holds a lot of unanticipated twists and turns ahead. But for the moment, the line of attack against Romney that Republican leaders ruled off-limits in the GOP primary seems to be working quite well when employed by Democrats. The party’s decision to protect Romney back in January and February — in effect, Gingrich et al were told not to look the dressage horse in the mouth — meant that he was never forced to develop an explanation or defense against such criticism, and it appears that he has yet to do so to this day.
With voters now forming their early impressions of the GOP nominee, that could prove to have been a major blunder.

Sort of ballerinas with hula hoops and twirly ribbons on a stick. I’d post a youtube link but watching would probably turn you gay in .005 seconds. It’s the kind of sport that makes synchronized swimming look butch.
I remember when women’s artistic gymnastics (the kind you’re familiar with) was incredibly girly, it’s nice to see actual athletic elements rewarded nowadays.

Both campaigns have not been talking about the economy lately.
Obama doesn’t want to because he wants to focus on other reasons to elect him, primarily because there are significant and legitimate claims to be made about his economic record. But if Obama keeps the focus off of that, then we get “war on religion” and “Obama hates the military” and “Obama loves welfare queens” and such. All of those are comically hyperbolic and not based in fact, and may be what is driving Independents away from Romney.
The mud slinging started way back, but now it’s intensified, as Obama has started spending more and making more ads and Romney has shifted his message away from the economy. I am actually not sure why he did. Maybe he listened to Bill Kristol’s critique?

For all of those people who are using a recent FERDI report showing Obama’s staff as a bunch of deadbeats for political fodder, let’s be “Fair and Balanced” about this.
The Bush Staff owed $664,527 in back taxes for tax year 2005.

Again, Reid is not my senator. What he has voted on doesn’t mean much to me as a Georgian. Romney wants to be MY president. He has made his business experience the centerpiece of his campaign, yet he won’t divulge how he made his millions. If he doesn’t want to talk about his finances, he doesn’t want my vote.

Actually he’s given a good majority to the Mormon church. While technically considered a charity, I am not sure that’s what most people would call it.

It started with Ben asking why Romney should be criticized for using legal tax loopholes when Obama’s own staff doesn’t pay taxes they legally owe. Then Welcome to the Occupation posted a very snarky “prove it, Ben” at which point Ben dropped a 10-ton MOAB fact bomb on the libs. Libs being libs, it spiraled out of control from there, because this being the Bookman blog and everything, they really aren’t accustomed to being confronted by facts.

Just because *you* think it’s a yes-no question doesn’t mean that *I* see it that way. If you asked me what I thought but you didn’t like the answer, I don’t really know what you want me to do for you.

How about because those are two separate issues and no one is actually criticizing Romney for USING tax loopholes, but instead criticizing people who support allowing those loopholes to exist!

Actually he’s given a good majority to the Mormon church. While technically considered a charity, I am not sure that’s what most people would call it.
doesn’t really matter, so long as that’s what the IRS calls it, and it does.
All this speculating isn’t terribly useful. The question remains is, why doesn’t Mitt seem to think he should disclose his taxes in a manner similar to Presidential candidates for the past several decades? I don’t really know, and it just seems kind of strange; I ASSUME everything tax-wise, since he started running for President five years ago, is perfectly legal.
And as some here have said, if anything seems unethical or weird, it would be a perfect opportunity for Romney to explain how he, as President, would work to make the tax code so that such sleights of hand wouldn’t be necessary, or possible, or whatever.

Well, I thought the criticism was that we don’t even know what loopholes were used.
I figure they are legal loopholes, so I haven’t criticized Romney at all for possibly using them. I’m curious to see what his tax thingy is, but not enough to change my vote either way.
