What Gingrich, Santorum, etc. got right about Romney

Back in the heat of the primary season, Republican leaders grew very uneasy when Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum and Rick Perry began to attack Mitt Romney as an out-of-touch rich guy who built his wealth through “vulture capitalism” (Rick Perry’s term) and was hiding something in his taxes. Among other concerns, GOP leaders recognized that if such attacks on Romney worked, they might end up with Gingrich, Santorum or Perry as their nominee.

That was not an outcome they were willing to risk, so they quickly ruled that line of attack out of bounds.

These days, however, they may be reaping the consequences of that decision. The latest CNN poll has Barack Obama pulling out to a seven-point lead over Romney. Ipsos/Reuters also puts the margin at seven, while Fox News puts it at nine. And as Fox notes, the internals are more worrisome still for Romney:

“Obama’s advantage comes largely from increased support among independents, who now pick him over Romney by 11 percentage points. Some 30 percent of independents are undecided. Last month, Obama had a four-point edge among independents, while Romney had the advantage from April through early June….

“The Obama campaign has spent heavily on advertising attacking Romney’s time at Bain Capital and his tax returns. And it appears to be working. Romney’s favorable rating dropped six percentage points since last month and now sits at 46 percent, down from 52 percent in mid-July. At the same time his unfavorable rating went up five points. Romney’s favorable rating has held steady among his party faithful, but it’s down eight percentage points among independents and seven points among Democrats.”

Moreover, Fox notes, Obama outpolls Romney by eight percentage points on the question of which man is more likely to help people achieve the American dream, which constitutes the foundation of the Romney strategy. And the erosion of support isn’t limited to the party’s nominees:

“While Democrats typically hold a slight edge over Republicans nationally in party identification, this attitude shifts based on events and changing sentiment. These days, voters seem to be even more likely to consider themselves Democrats than Republicans. There has been a five-percentage-point Democratic advantage, on average, in Fox News polls this year. In this poll, the Democratic edge is nine points. That may or may not be on the high side, although it is similar to other recent national polls conducted by NBC News and the Wall Street Journal, which put Democrats up 11 percentage points, and the Pew Research Center, with Democrats up by 13 percent.”

(In a humorous aside, only one major polling outfit in the last three weeks — the ever-reliable Rasmussen — has Romney leading, with the former Massachusetts governor up by four. See below.)

realclear

Source: http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2012/president/us/general_election_romney_vs_obama-1171.html

It’s still early, of course — the campaign holds a lot of unanticipated twists and turns ahead. But for the moment, the line of attack against Romney that Republican leaders ruled off-limits in the GOP primary seems to be working quite well when employed by Democrats. The party’s decision to protect Romney back in January and February — in effect, Gingrich et al were told not to look the dressage horse in the mouth — meant that he was never forced to develop an explanation or defense against such criticism, and it appears that he has yet to do so to this day.

With voters now forming their early impressions of the GOP nominee, that could prove to have been a major blunder.

Other funny thing both parties do exceptionally well to their own advantage is label most of their voting consitutuencies as “victims” of another…victims of rich folks…victims of those on the govt dole and not paying taxes….

We are only victims of ourselves…we the people have allowed our government to become impotent to looking our for our interests and desires in favor of following the money…be it defense crooks, union crooks or any other flavor of what amounts to extortion…We are victims on nobody else but ourselves…

Ben @ 2.15, I don’t especially care, but simply googling “bush administration tax cheats” nailed this cite:

http://www.disorderedliberty.com/fiscal-responsibility/tax-cheats-allowed-work-government/

where it is claimed:

During the last year of President Bush’s Administration, Executive Branch employees likewise owed approximately $800,000 in back taxes. And from 2004 through 2006, when Republicans were in power, the total amount of back taxes owed each year by congressional workers was just below $9 million.

So if that’s accurate, it would seem that the $833,970 you’re crying about is absolutely within normal limits.

In all Presidential election and the poll always pave the way to make or get people up in arms about who would be the best President for the US. Right now with the economy and jobless rate, gas prices, food, homes, the world problems….place a lot on any future President shoulders. We the people who vote to elect the person whom we feel would serve us best. To me the last four years has been very difficult for our President, Republician Party, even the Democratic Party has indeed sort to discredit, make problems, stop, did not support this President in many of the issues that confronts America. Even with President Obama ongoing issues we have not respected him for reasons I can’t even understand why! We have to go through a lot of red tape to bring things to the forefront of those of us who have to continue to be left behind and fight to get ahead; that mean all of us with no particular races. None of us know what lies ahead for this election and whom will win; but we better think hard because to return back to yesteryear will be a big mistake! Without pounding on anyone about where we are headed; the writing is already on the wall and it is ashame that it taking everything we have to live here in America. Greed hurt everyone no matter who we are; no matter how much money we have or where we live, who we know it put a big dent in human life. Have or did any of our past President every come forward and say…wait a minute, we are actually killing ourselves with these high prices and greed being placed upon America people. How do you start something, you begun slowly and meet in the middle to see how things are going and if they are going well…we move on slowly. We have been hit hard with many issues that has not been solved, foreclosures, jobs, homelessness etc., and yet, we have some who just don’t care about others. I know very little about Mr. Romney because his past is so shakey and with all of the stories about what he has done with proof of not coming forward with his income taxes make me cast doubts about his honest, creditability and willingness. Do he want to be the President to repeal everything or will he do it for the sake of his friends. Surely, he is not making a good effort to tone down things about whe he have done in the past nor have he been forthcoming! No one President has been perfect for America because we continue to face a lot of human diffuculties and we have less help in correcting them. It is not my wish or call to say anything about those running for office. What is important is, why elect them if they are not going to fight for the people who elected them to serve. Finally, those who are in congress and representatives needs to be voted out of office because they sit and do nothing for the those who elected them to serve. It is deeply ashamed that they tell the America peoplea nything to get elected only to dissappoint them! I say with a degree of sadness that they need to resign immediately because they too have lied just like Mr. Romney have over and over agan!

There needs to be a new “Common-Sense” party…….The Dems have drifted so far to the left that if you ain’t handcuffed to a tree to save it you do not qualify…..the Repubs have drifted so far to the right that if the Bible ain’t on your dashboard, then you are not a real person! The fringe parties (Green, etc.) are mostly loonies who seek attention and fun, but have no substance. Good gracious, SOMEBODY start a common sense party with some reasonable platform:
1. You can be a Christian w/o being a Southern Baptist.
2. You can be compassionate w/o being condescending AND getting caught up in every po-dunk cause someone’s mind can conceive
3. You realize that government can and should help, but is not and never will be the total solution.
4. You accept that there must be a rule of law, but make them common-sensical as well.
5. You can even like old Jay w/o agreeing with him!

So if I bet $100 that O wins I would probably only get $25-$30 if he won and lose it all if he lost. But since the odds heavily favor O then I’m guessing that the money line payout for a Romney win would be triple. So while I haven’t checked the moneyline I’m guessing that a $100 bet on Romney would pay out anywhere from $250 to $300 or more. So why would I wager with you?

You’re kidding right? Or maybe you don’t understand that not paying them is how they got to BE back taxes?

Please continue to make fun of Mrs. Romney’s MS therapy.

After all, it’s politics.

Being a jackhole is perfectly acceptable.

Perhaps you should try to follow the whole exchange before making a bigger jackhole out of yourself, That Black Guy. You’re welcome

I did read the entire exchange (I believe I included your first post on the subject in my reply).

Others also read your posts and reached the same conclusion as I.

MS…it’s the new knock knock joke in modern politics.

B. Fraud — “Has anybody considered that Romney, instead of not paying taxes, has given away the OVERWHELMING MAJORITY of his wealth to charity, and is just too modest to admit it?”

There are limits to the deductibility of charitable donations. The LDS demands a tithe of 10% of all income; I doubt Romney gave much more than that to his church.

Actually no, simple answers are superior in many cases. You can ask me if I am opposed to socialism, I say “yes.” See how easy that is? But you and Kammy-poo don’t want to be exposed for what you are, so you obfuscate.

The write off for Ann Romney’s $77,000 saddle gear is fair game just due to the sheer expense of the gear. But mocking a therapy that is showing itself to be beneficial for a number of people from different backgrounds who suffer from a variety of ailments isn’t.
_______________________________________________________________
Doomy, the $77,000 deduction was a *business* writeoff for Rafalca. Which turned out to be a $49 deduction.

A new message from your friends at People For the American Way.

Dear Mitt Romney:

Please denounce Jerry Boykin’s hateful ideology, and the scaremongering tactics that he, and others like him (like Rep. Michele Bachmann) have employed against the people of this country.

Dear Normal,

Mitt Romney is proving just how far he’ll go to kowtow to the most extreme reaches of his far right base: he’s meeting face to face with radical extremists like Jerry Boykin. Yes, that Jerry Boykin, the retired Lt. General who was rebuked by then-President Bush in 2003 for framing the War on Terrorism in religious terms, and who has made it his mission to drive Muslim Americans out of public life.

Last Thursday, Mitt Romney took time out of his trip to Denver to sit down with right-wing influentials Garry Bauer, James Dobson, and Boykin, who praised the Republican nominee for his plans to defund Planned Parenthood, among other initiatives the Religious Right holds dear.

Tell Mitt Romney that potential presidents of the United States have no business empowering extremists like Jerry Boykin!

For the record, here’s just how extreme Jerry Boykin is:

He believes that President Obama is creating a personal Brownshirt Army to enforce Marxism in America
He believes that the Muslim Brotherhood has infiltrated the top levels of U.S. government, intelligence services, media, and the military
He believes that Muslims are not protected by the First Amendment and that there should be no mosques in America
He believes that American Jews support Democrats because they misunderstand Hitler’s political philosophy
He believes that there can be no interfaith dialogue between Muslims and Christians
A day after meeting with these ideologues, Mitt Romney refused to condemn Rep. Michele Bachmann for her baseless witch-hunt against the Muslim Brotherhood, which makes sense, since it was fanatics like Jerry Boykin who provided the “evidence” that inspired Bachmann to go on that witch-hunt.

Mitt Romney is pandering to right-wing extremists in his pursuit of power. Tell him that’s not right, and that’s not the American way!

They BOTH suck

“Ann Romney incurred $77,731 of expenses related to Rob Rom in 2012. The Romneys did not deduct $77,731 of horse-related expenses. The passive loss rules don’t let them do that. They deducted $49, the proportionate amount covered by passive income.”

that black guy,

Then I stand corrected. As do a lot of libs. The $77,000 figure I had seen several libs post it several times a few weeks ago. So naturally I just assumed it to be true. I take the libs at their word and end up getting burned by their lie. Won’t do that again.
